I have an issue with my touchscreen on my G2.
Just bought it from Swappa and it's apparent that a part of the screen might not work.
Could this just be a software issue? There's about half centimeter vertical width space going across the screen horizontally that will not respond to touches when I move over it.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
I've played around in dev options to see touch traces and they just disappear when I go across, and then a new trace start.

Is the dead spot in the upper-half, right over the sim card slot? If so, hardware. There are quite a few on here that have experienced that same thing and were only able to fix it by sending it in for warranty. Seeing that you got it from Swappa, I'm not sure if it has warranty still. Sorry, bro.

That's exactly where it is.
I returned it.

I have had about 7 different AT&T Tilts in my life and if my memory serves me right, I only remember 2 of them not having the issue I am about to entail.
When I slide my keyboard out, it seems that the ribbon cable or something under the metal hinge pushes against the back of the screen and you can actually see the screen colors fray and fade as if it would do it you were to push down too hard on it with your finger.
I am just wondering if anyone else has notice this. Wonder if it is a common occurrence. I would like to know what causes this.
No such thing on the 2 I've had. Never read of it on here either.
7 Tilt's? That was a typo, right?
No issues for me at all. No resistance or screen changes when activating the keyboard.
hmmm, odd. yeah 7 man haha
i have the worst of luck with phones. the one i thought was "THE ONE" i would keep till it was time to get a new phone was hit out of my hand and the hinge came loose so I had to replace that. That one did not have the problem i stated earlier. my replacement had that screen/hinge issue so i told em to send me another one by bullshitting that it will crack my screen...the one they sent me to replace that had the 7201 chip in it and 0 hours of talk time so it was brand freaking new...but it also had the screen issue...weird, huh? i wonder if it is anything to worry about?
The momentary color shifting occurs when you are applying too much pressure to the wrong area when sliding the phone open. I don't see this is normal use since I baby my Tilt, but I am able to reproduce it when I purposely try to.

yeah, i am aware. it happens regardless what i do. trying to figure out what is causing it so i can find a fix
Speaking from my job experience of ripping apart laptop LCD's, it's probably the ribbon cable; as mentioned previously...
I've just received my phone back from repair, OTA to froyo immediately
Then I realized that the right edge of the screen is not responsive to touches at all...though it displays image properly
Would it be a software issue? Or should I send the phone back?

Of course it's not a software issue, send it back. Try multitouch paint for giggles, see what happens when you try to paint over on that side.

Definitely not working...I also tried wiping cache and data and same result
I was wondering if it is a rare issue with Froyo and would like to flash another rom to see what happens...but my phone is stock everything and I don't want to void my warranty if it is the hardware :/

Personally I seriously doubt that's a software problem. As far as I know there's no "calibration" to be done on a capacitive screen.
The digitizer has to be faulty. I would send it back and get another replacement.
I have an EVO and found this thread through search. I have the SAME problem, the right edge of the screen is absolutely not responsive to touch input. When I first got the phone it worked fine. I rooted it and started throwing different roms on and thats about when I noticed it. It would happen sparingly and then go away. Using the 'Dotty' app I was able to find out what was happening, I would touch the right edge and then untouch it and it would continue to register a 'phantom' touch on the right edge that would wiggle up and down and the circle would quickly change colors (meaning its moving) but there was nothing touching the screen! This was an easily repeatable thing. Dotty would continue to register real touches elsewhere on the screen but the phantom touch input wouldn't go away. Outside of Dotty, I assume the phantom touch would be going on over on the right and all apps would focus on that as it was the 'first' touch point, and then ignore any other touches. This created the illusion of the touchscreen not working at all. This problem would come and go, seemingly random. I would have to turn the screen on/off repeatedly and it eventually went away. Fast forward to now, The 'phantom' touch seems to have disappeared but I now can no longer touch the right quarter inch of the screen. This renders, mainly, the P button useless, unless I go into landscape mode. Does this also sound like a digitizer issue? Would this be covered under the 1 year HTC warranty?
This may be a problem beyond the scope of android, but seeing as I'm running it, I thought I'd try here first.
I've noticed that the lower left hand side of my screen has a "dead spot" where touch is simply not registered. To illustrate, I went to screen calibration's test screen and drew a straight line along the edge of the screen. (See Attachment)
I've tried recalibrating the screen (manually and resetting to default calibration) as well as wiping data and reinstalling the system. Reinstalling the system worked once, but then the problem came back and subsequent reinstalls did not fix the issue.
I'm running Incubus26jc super froyo [RLS 12] on the 15-07-10 340X480 Froyo Kernel.
Anyone else seen anything like this? As far as I can tell, the problem is not getting any worse. Currently, it's only a hindrance when trying to use keys in that region, but I can work around it by switching to and from landscape. It's a bit of a hassle, so I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the situation.
I was sure it was hardware until the system reinstall fixed it, but am now baffled as I can no longer replicate the fix.
I have not tried reinstalling the kernel but will at some point in the next day or so. I'd like to avoid switching back to WM to check if the problem persists, but may have to... we'll see. Doing everything I can to make this phone last until the Incredible month of February when I'm up for an upgrade.
dont know the issue resolution... but i have the same with my touch vogue.. and in the same 'area' apparently as well.
hard for me to hit the 'a' key on my keyboard. hehe
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one... anyone else?
Bottom right corner for me... I was able to calibrate around it but it took a few tries.

The sensitivity across my screen was inconsistent some time ago. I found that years of my abuse had taken a tole on the exterior of my phone. It eventually got worse and I bought a new housing (with a new digitizer) on ebay for a reasonable price. If it is hardware then it really isn't that hard to fix if you like taking things apart.
If you're sure that win mo accepts input from that part of the screen then nevermind my post. I would play with a painting app though and investigate the hardware further.
I may be talking a little out my a$$ with this part but.. is it possible that in calibrating your screen the os may change it's settings on how hard you have to press and such also. that may be how you got it working.
In any case, my investment in a hew housing was well worth it considering how modern my old phone has become thanks to the developers here.

In my case, no - when drawing a straight line down or across the screen, the line starts 'moving' away from the stylus (like the picture in the OP).
Gah... now it's shutting itself off randomly and the dead spot has grown. Not good at all.
Yeah, mine was better for a while then 'slid' again. I ended up swapping the digitizer with my other Vogue and things are back to normal.
Sent from my Full Android on Vogue using XDA App
I have another vogue, but am weary of doing anything like that. How hard was it to get done?
All you need to do is switch the front half of the housing rather than the digitizer itself- it's not hard. There's a teardown guide somewhere in the forum, Google Vogue teardown and it should be at the top.
Sent from my Full Android on Vogue using XDA App
The only thing that worries me is that my spare vogue exists because it was dropped in a muddy puddle. I'm hoping the water damage isn't too bad. Guess we'll just have to see.
it is really annoying
I have the exact same problem and I too thought it was a hardware issue till I saw this Thread. I was ignoring it till two days ago when it started really bugging me. Now, I don't even need to press any button and it automatically gets pressed around the curve and I have a google search box there, so it keeps on searching for eee or sss randomly and started draining my battery. Is there a proper fix for this?
I thought I'd chime in too... I could never seem to calibrate the touchscreen properly in either Android or Debian. Changing the screen resolution (i.e. msmfb scaling) seems to have no effect, whether it's 240x320 or 640x480. Any area within 5mm or so of the edges of the LCD will register as the edge, making "A" and several other keys on the virtual keyboard impossible to hit. Passing calibration values to the kernel didn't seem to fix anything, but it's possible I was using them the wrong way...
i have the same kind of problem on my Kaiser... i think its realted to hardware... either the housing or the digitizer...
I am experiencing the same problem on X10 mini pro. the same screen spot exactly, i have to try very hard to get z or x or shift to work. Sometimes when I try locking the screen and unlocking it back, it works.
update
so after a very long time with this problem i decided to change the digitizer and problem is gonne. visualy the broken digitizer had nothing wrong with it. The fix was fairly easy though, there is no glued parts involved into getting a new digitizer on the u20i.
Touch Screen
I just bought a brand new Cubot One and it looks more than perfect! It has just a little problem with the touch screen ( I think its the software, need ROM change). There is a dead line on the right side of the screen that touch doesn't work at all. Any solutions? Anyone faced that before? Can I fix it myself or do I have to send it back for replacement? Is there any video or guide that shows its done?
I uploaded a video on YouTube to show the problem but i cant post it yet.. (new member)
You can write "Cubot One touch screen problem" and it's the 1st one.
Thank You!
Hi guys,
My Xperia ZR started behaving abnormally some days back, I put "screentouchtest" app and found that there were random inputs on the phone which made the phone go useless... Check the screen shot attached.
So I tried to make an app that will disable only that part on my screen and I was successful at it... Check screenshot attached. I could then at least use my phone to some extent.
But now the frequency of these random touch inputs have increased and that has made it again go unusable...
Problem is that I made this app as a floating app and whenever user touches other part of the phone , touch below the unblocked area is activated.
SO now I wanted to disable the touch completely over this area...any help will be appreciated.
Sony says it is due to water logging in the motherboard and no warranty will be given.
You are not alone!
Having the same problem here. Random touch inputs on the top right corner of device. I can assure you it's not because of water log of any sorts because i have opened ,checked, dried and even tested the touch display. Its a software related issue I guess which I am not able to pinpoint or understand. I wish someone from the forum helps with it.
water logging? did your phone get wet some time? its waterproof phone and no warranty given? screw sony in consumer court

Sorry to say unfortunately custom ROM doesn't help either. After I installed one just to see if the problem persists, To my surprise it didn't! But after a week or so the pendulum was back to square one. So I had to roll back. I really don't know how to go about this problem I think the problem is because of a bug of some sorts which causes the chip to send signals to the display addressing that its being touched or whatever. Anyway this is just my guess. You can try installing a custom ROM for your device and see if the issue ceases. In that case my problem would be just device specific. Do share your results after you install a custom ROM :good:.

May be there is a problem with the touch digitizer under the LCD panel which is misbehaving. No software can fix it. You will need to replace the touch digitizer along with LCD screen as they are sold as single unit. Check online if you can find the parts and ask any local mobile repairer to replace it. :good:
NO Luck with Custom ROM
I put Android Lollipop (CM12 Port) and there have been no change. Looks like the problem is with digitizer, last time I told local repair shop to replace the screen they said they cant separate the screen and had no clue. But I searched and found out from youtube videos that it can be done. Now all I have to do is buy Screen+Digitizer.
As you can see the random touch strip have moved little upwards from my earlier screenshots. That happened months back. If anyone wants the app I made then let me know. It helps me to some extent.

Where can I buy 1? Online? Link Please...
Since there are random touches on my phone, I made app that blocks this touch... Check the screenshots, I have "Show Touches" Option ON from Developer Settings. This makes all the touches show white marker... So I made app that floats over the screen and wont show any response when there are touches over that area. "Semi Transparent Area" in the screenshot - Touch wont work over that part. App wont completely disable the touch though, if we press other part of screen for that time app gets disabled...

I have this problem too but it only happens if the phone screen get wet
Some time it happen randomly but when i press on the screen at bottom and on led gently it disappear and back to normal
Thank you!
The Float APK solved the major issue of my faulty touch screen in my Nexus 4. There are two lines in my screen where the touch is not working anymore. One of them is having several crazy clicks making my phone somehow useless. By using this app, I can prevent that, which is great!
Two issues I've got:
- the textbox to set the distance from the top is located exactly in the first dead line! So I need to turn my phone sideways to be edit to click there and edit its value.
- when using the phone in horizontal mode, blocked zone turns as well, but the faulty zone is fixed there.
I'm wondering if you might share with us the source code or maybe you consider to make some improvements on it?
Thank you so much for sharing this app here!
thanks for this app solution.
I too have problem of ghost touches. This app definately helps with that and makes the phone somewhat usable again.
The only problem is that some ghost touches are continous (it's like someone presses their finger on the screen and keeps holding it there). This makes action by other touches unresponsive.
Maybe we can find a solution for this in the float app?
Source code for the app
Finally since many of you requested, here is the source code! - Stop Touch - Source Code
A friend's sister bought her a touchpad some time ago - not sure it's ever been used. When we run the diagnostics on it, there's a band right across it where the touch sensors aren't working. So, before I invest any more time into getting this thing going for her, is there any possibility that putting kitkat (or even some later version) on this will fix this problem or is it just flat out a hardware issue?
By a band do you me a 'dead space' is there a visible 'smear' on the screen?
It won't take much time at all to flash KK on it (famous last words).
Should go smoothly. Use Rolands Tutorials for reference.

A dead band. If you hit the screen there it doesn't register. About 2 inches wide from side to side.
Seems too defined to be software related but I thought I'd ask. If it won't help, I'm not sure I want to invest the time so I was hoping someone could tell me one way or the other.

I've repaired them where the battery was 'swelled' up from over charging, but I haven't yet seen a dead area from side to side.
Is it possible to bring it up in WebOS and see if the problem is there also?

I have two Touchpads, both set up the same. One touchpad the screen works perfectly, but on the other one there are "dead spots" not lines where you lose the capacitive touch. Which leads me to believe that it is not software related in my case.
Don't know if that helps.
Sometimes is only dirt in the way. Open the Touchpad and clean the touch sensor from inside with alcohol.
Search on youtube for cleaning touch sensor, you will get the idea.
I have fix one that one, and it works with no dead spot.
good luck!
