Poor Phone Signal - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've had my M7 for a week now and I've had really poor signal wherever I go. I upgraded to it from my HTC Desire HD however, I bought it off contract from eBay so there's no warranty on it. Is it a software issue or hardware issue? I posted on the HTC UK Facebook page and they say it could be a hardware issue.
Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

could be an hardware issue, Maybe poor network coverage, maybe you are not using the best radio for your netowrk. How much dB you get and how many bars/5?

-85 dBm and 1-3 bars. The phone is completely stock and it's using a Vodafone branded Rom however, it is unlocked and I'm on the 3 network

-85 dBm is a pretty good connection. Mine is around -93 - 95 dBm (3/5) at home and not experienced any issue making call or using mobile data. If you get below -100 dBm, you'll start having issues when making calls. But again at -85 is fine (unless you have a cell tower in your yard, this is normal....)
Also make sure your preferred network type is set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE AUTO so your radio will switch to a better freq. when needed.

I think it might be an issue with the radio, rather than a hardware issue.
My M7 is unbranded, rooted, unlocked bootloader and S-Off. My signal issues started about a month and a half ago and I've had terrible signal/download speeds ever since then.
I've contacted 3 numerous times since then and was initially told that there was an issue with the mast my phone was connected to but even after sending a team out to "fix" it a couple of times, I'm still facing the same issue.
I did then think that it could simply be an issue on 3's end but my brother is also on 3 but not having issues on his Note 3.
I haven't got around to testing out different radios yet but that's probably the best solution I can think of. If that doesn't solve it then I assume it could be a hardware problem.

Guess I could try updating the radio. A link to the latest radio and a how-to-install guide would 've great. Thanks.

Signal keeps going in and out

Device: Tilt
Carrier: AT&T
ROM: Duttys_WM6.1_Official_5.2.19209_1_58_16_27
Have been running this rom for a couple of weeks with no problem. All of the sudden yesterday I noticed signal kept coming in and out, wasn't able to make or receive calls. Since then, I've tried a couple of diff ROMs, diff radios, and for some reason it just doesn't seem to catch a consistent signal. Signal keeps jumping from 3G to EDGE to having nothing. When I try to make a call or go online, signal just goes dead.
Any suggestions onto what could this be?
Thanks
same issue here....in NYC
i'm having the same issue.
if you switch the band signal (click on the phone icon on the top..then go Bands tab) to GSM. all is well. you will no longer rotate b/w EDGE and 3G when trying to make calls/internet. but when you revert the setting back to Auto, the phone may work for a short time while it still thinks its under EDGE. then when it senses 3G network available, it will try to connect to that signal and disconnect both your voice and data. i'm in New York City, so trying to get on 3G network is not an issue.
ive had this issue for about a week now thinking my setting got all messed up somehow. i've reflashed my tilt to the original ATT ROM from the HTC ATT ROM update from one of Dutty's ROMs. still doesn't work. i'm starting to think the 3G chip is fried...
AT&T technicial support can't help either. the guy i had on the phone said there was a 3G tower literally a block away...
might have to call warranty to get it exchanged...
does anyone else have any ideas why this does this?
Change the radio and see if this helps. I keep a copy of all 6.1 radios on my phone so I can flash on the go for the best signal possible.

I've tried a couple of different radios with no luck. Thing is, it just happened out of nowhere... yesterday morning worked, yesterday night, it was acting up, no change in ROM or radio...
Thanks for your input.

If that is the case, then I would definitely call your service provider and see if they are having issues.

haha... yeah, thats kinda what i figured. so now im "3G-less". im on EDGE only like my old blackberry... at least i have wifi, gps, camera in one device unlike any current BBs out there... still kinda sucks. ill give ATT-tech a shot anyway...
So, I called AT&T yesterday... was on the phone for a couple of hours with NO RESULT! They did they all the towers are working around my area with no problem though... i think it might be what finaldock said, "3G might be fried"
Any suggestions anyone?
Oh yeah, I'm running the ROM below now... still w/the same problem.

Dropped signal on v1615 t-mobile uk

I have a strange problem with my Kaiser, the signal with t-mobile uk keeps dropping, I have changed various radios and roms but still have the problem.
Current Phone is: V1615
KAIS130
SPL-3.34.Hard
CPLD-8
Current RomDA Ultimate X-V3 (but have tried anumber of others including stock t-mobile)
Current Radio: 1.70.19.09 (but have tried a number of others)
Any help would be appreciated.
p.s. Yeah on my first post, been a lurker for far too long.
Do you use 3G networking?, if not, try to change under Band menu to GSM network, it works pretty well and most places has good signal for it.
Good Luck!
I've had a nightmare with mine on T-mobile..
3 months ago, my phone developed a problem where it'd drop its network for a few hours, then I'd get a few hours of it working, etc. etc.
It was sent to T-mobile, who just re-flashed it. Still didn't work! Had it sent back and it was away a long time, I believe they replaced the motherboard.
It's been working perfectly for the last month until today - When it hasn't had a network connection the whole day! I'm worried it's still broken..
Hopefully our problems are network based! T-mobile warranty returns are terrible.
Aha! Changing my "Network Type" to GSM from Auto fixed things.
...But now when I receive a text, it vibrates until I reset!

turn off vibrate
Hi Milmirex & Jamiepyrite, thanks for the comments.
I've changed to GSM and it has been working fine for the last ten minutes, will test for the rest of the day and report back.
Does anybody else have any idea's how to fix 3G problem? I receive emails all day so could really do with this being resolved.
Does anybody else have same issue but with different network? would possibly point to hardware issue if you do.
Thanks again.
P.S. I didn't have the problem with vibrating on receiving texts
I had flashed back to the original T-Mobile ROM when it was doing the vibrate thing. Flashed it again back to the ROM I was using before and all works fine now

Even I have the similar issues from last week. Mine is MDA VARIO III. Even after changing my band to GSM, the issue stil seesm to be there. For about 10 mins i get a weak sigmnal, then it disappears.
Where did you get the original TMobile Vario III ROM. I would like to reflash and see if it fixes the problem. Can you please direct me to the right place
Thanks
Shashi
I think my problem may be similar. I'm with Virgin Mobile but I think they use T-Mobile network.
Have had my Tytn II for over a year & haven't touched software or settings for several months & all has worked well. For the last few weeks I've had no signal in places that other people on the same network (using different phones) are fine. Sometimes if I reboot it comes back. I'm also now finding low battery a lot but I think that the signal issue is draining my batter as it seems to be constantly searching. I get low/no signal with a completely full battery so I don't think that the battery is the problem.
Might this be a H/W problem? Anything I can do to sort this?
i have the same problem. I use Telkomsel operator in indonesia. My Kaiser is HTC Brand.
Any idea why is this happen? Seems like A LOT OF Kaiser went bad this way
Anyone have solution?

Problems with new phone

Hi,
Got my new TD2 on Saturday and think that it is a very good phone.
Now the probems:
Awlful radio reception (swapped over the sim and put it into my old Touch Cruise and get full signal- so i know its the phone)
Keep getting the following error messages:
"An error occurred with gwes.exe" also get "shell32.exe" errors. I report the error to Microsoft and have informed HTC, will update if i get any response.
Has anybody had any similar issues?
Have not had any of the issues. Maybe if you supply your ROM and RADIO Versions and what region you are in it may help?
Radio reception on mine is pretty good on all the stations here. I don't really use it though but have tested.
Rom version- 1.39.405.2 (47382) WWE
Rom date- 04/07/09
Radio version- 3.43.25.19
Protocol- 61.20t.25.10u
Using T-Mobile in the UK (Wiltshire)
Hope that this helps.

If you mean bad GSM/3G reception, you're certainly not alone. 3G is particularly poor, you really need to be in a strong signal area to use 3G.
You may get some improvement by changing the phone settings from "automatic" to only using your network, and the band settings to the UK bands only.
Other than that, we're all praying for an upgraded radio rom soon.

Yes, i see from other posts that signal quality is an "issue" at the moment. Got usual response from HTC (reset/hard reset/move aropund location/send back to retailer- might do this)
Tried changing bands to automatic, which was fine when had a signal, but when lost it, wouldn't find it again.
With the other issue, told to hard reset by HTC and wait and see what happens.

Any clue as to his other problems.......
Have you hard reset..... do those other problems still exist?

I have hard reset, and (touchwood) i have not had the error messages since, will keep updating as necessary.
Yeah, think i spoke too soon, it started to error again with shell32.exe, noticed that i am not the only one by using a search engine, it seems that there are a few issues with Windows Mobile.
Spoke to HTC UK again, and after another hard reset, will be sending it back to the retailer for DOA replacement.
Not the best start, but seems that is the price you pay for having brand new technology in this day and age!

[Q] T-Mobile Service Down Frequently

Has anyone noticed random times when your phone just won't connect to T-Mobile? No data/text/call.
This has been happening to me frequently when I was on CM7 and now the stock update. It just won't connect for an hour. I'm on 5.12 radio too which I believe is the most up to date.
The bars just go gray and sometimes have the x on them which means it can't even find the operator.
Where are you located? I am in Fort Worth Texas and have no issues with service except for certain areas which have never had decent reception.
No problems here and been running CM7 nightlies.
Also running radio 5.12

Gainesville, FL. It shouldn't be the location since I've never had problems here in the past year
I haven't had any problems in Huntsville, Al. Also note, the 5.08 and 5.12 radios were originally from korean N1's. While they work fine normally, I believe they are not the most update US radio. I may be wrong on that, but I think that is the way I read it. Personally, I am running 5.08 and thus far, no problems from it.

Over the past few weeks I have been having similar problems in gainesville. It was pretty bad, I had no service for almost 24 hours on friday/saturday, the 25th and 26th I think. The phone will sometimes show signal, sometimes no signal - either way I get no text/data/calls. Im running WP7 and CM7 on an HD2, but my friends with tmobile experience similar problems here. Where exactly are you located? I am near the corner of archer and 13th st. and have no signal right now. I chatted with tmobile on friday when my phone was down and they said they were working on a tower. Just got off the chat with them now and they say they see no problems, but have filed a service request.

I'm on the corner of 13th and University. Yes, the same was for me on Saturday it was completely gone all morning. It came back really well on Saturday night but now its completely intermittent. I've tried reverting radios, and now I am even running Froyo to see if that was the issue. It relieves me its not my radio though if its just one of the towers here, but I'll try and talk to someone who has T-Mobile. It's terrible though

You will be fine downgrading through normal flash means. I have downgraded before after trying the 5.12 radio for a day.
I noticed a huge difference when going from cm7 nightleys w/5.12 to stock 2.3.3...no drop anything
also, if your connection is slow, check to see if you hit the data cap...f'ers got me last month with over 5gb dled... they just slow your connection speed
Maybe I did, I have been using my phone more often with Gingerbread and such coming out/end of the month. How did you check your cap?
Also keep in mind this can be due to t-mobile messing with the network whether is be upgrades or maintenance I dunno, although I haven't heard of it going down for periods of time that long before.
I just had a long chat with a T-Mobile rep.
She had me turn off my phone and did a hard reset on her side of things that seemed to have cured the problem for now. Only 2G would connect, however. I asked her why this would happen and she proposed "weather fluctuation" and that a hard reset can be achieved by letting the phone sit over night without a sim card in it......
I still believe my problem is going to persist, but hopefully this can help anyone. I am gonna jump back up to the OTA too (sitting on froyo during this).

They tired to have me do this - apparently they are just trying to get your phone to connect to another tower. It didn't work for me, I guess there are no other towers my phone could reach. I bet your only getting 2g b/c you are connecting to a tower that is working but further away so you get weaker signal.

Though that would make sense, it seems like whenever I don't have data, I also don't have voice/text. Which doesn't make sense to me. I can imagine having voice/text and no data. But it either all seems to work or all doesn't. I'm still up though
EDIT: Lost it again. What's going on T-Mobile?

M7 losing cellular connection frequently! What is going on?

Hi everyone,
This is a great site with a mass of info! I've used it before to flash my HTC Sensation a few years ago.
Since then, I've had a HTC One X and now a HTC One M7. Ok, the M7 is 'New' (from China). It's in excellent condition and it actually does appear to be new. So I don't really know what's going on there... But anyway, I'm having issues.
The phone can't seem to keep a cellular signal, but Wifi is absolutely fine.
So a bit about the history of the phone; When I got it, it was on Android 4.4.2 IIRC with super CID already done. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed LineageOS onto it - the latest one. The battery life was appalling and it wouldn't charge. The phone signal kept dropping.
I've reflashed it today with an RUU called "RUU_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_7.17.1540.51.exe" and battery life appears to have improved somewhat.
However, the cellular signal keep dropping. Now, I've contacted Virgin UK and explained the situation and they have said the Sim is faulty and it's old apparently and not 4g. They've since sent me a new 4g sim. I've put it in and activated it yesterday.
I still don't understand why my signal keep disappearing.
I've checked and verified the APN details - They seem correct - "Virgin Media Mobile Internet".
The problem appears to be something to do with "Network Mode" or "Network Operator". Sometimes I've noticed that if I go back into the settings and change the selection, sometimes it seems to see the connection again!
Right now, I've selected "2G/3G/4G auto" network mode with "Virgin 2G/3G" as the operator, but I think that soon, it will drop again!
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone here? Thanks, Antony...
Ok, I've just lost signal now, around 2hrs later... My phone has just been left in my house... I've been checking on it every so often.
If I go to "Network Operators" and choose Virgin, it magically works again!
I have full signal again, calls work and internet works. What the?!?!
It's still doing it.
Apparently, it's because I've got a 3G plan but using a 4G sim. Although, that is strange because even if I choose 2G/3G, it still drops.
Mehhhhh.

Can you post a "fastboot gervar all" output please? You have superCID, which means your phone is, or was s-off at one point in time. Maybe you need to flash a different RUU to get everything working

Hey, thanks for your reply!
Since that last post, I've flashed a UK ROM and it was still the same, in a way worse because it dumbed down some options in network settings. I've since flashed it back to the ROM mentioned above. I've now noticed that the problem is something to do with 3G/4G. If I change the network provider to 2G ONLY, the phone works perfectly with my Virgin SIM.
I desperately want to fix this. My new provider which I've switched to doesn't offer 2G, so I'll effectively be screwed.
Here is the data which you asked me to get!

You flashed US unlocked RUU, but that should work fine. You need x.xx.401.xx for WWE, but, as I said, US unlocked should work fine. I had a similar issue with an AOSP ROM, and I resolved it by manually entering my APN settings. Even though all APN settings looked fine, there were some small differences that caused issues. Not a great help, but you could try it, no harm. If thadoesn't work, it's most likely a hardware issue

Hmmm, ok, thanks. I've already messed about with APN details lots of times.
Ahh well. It seems that this phone is doomed. Maybe I'll just have to buy another.
I'll just give it one more go.
Thanks, Antony
