Hi all. I picked up an Optimus 2X for cheap during a sale, and overall I'm quite satisfied with it. However, one problem is the lack of RAM which ironically makes multi-tasking less smooth than on older single-core phones like the HTC Desire.
The Optimus 2X has 384MB RAM available to the system, where as most high-end phones have 512MB and some even 1GB. Even the old Nexus One had 512MB. After startup with Android 2.3, only about 150MB is available, which quickly decreases to ~100MB.
I know the whole Free RAM = Wasted RAM argument, but this has real-world implications with this phone.
For example, if you open the web browser and then use some other applications for a while and switch back, the page is not longer in memory but has to be reloaded. It's the same with other apps, they quickly get kicked out of RAM when you run other apps, forcing them to reload.
How does CM7 compare in terms of RAM usage? I'm guessing the LG bundled apps and background tasks use up quite a bit of RAM?
that remaining ram id because of the tegra gpu, 128mb is allocated I think.. about ram management, I'm using miui and downloaded sd data from a game then browsed the forums via browser then switched back to the download and its still intact, returned to the browser and all tabs still ok,
i think most stock based roms behave the same as yours

Advice regarding ram availaibilty and buying new device
Guys i need your advice since it is slightly related to current topic. So , here it is
i am going to buy a phone tomorrow
I was thinking of Optimus 2x.
I am coming from Nokia S60v5 and u can imagine the Ram problems there so i am very sensitive to the issue of less ram availaible.
1) how much free ram does O2x offer on a)stock 2.3 b) CM7 ?
2) I have the Option of Buying either O2x ,Oblack or Galaxy Sl(indian version of galaxy s) as price of all 3 are similar , which one would you choose, doesn't Oblack offer more free RAM than O2x ?
3) A little research tells me that nvidia havnt released their drivers, and god knows when LG will come out with ICS ,just wanted to know are there any chances/news or assurances of CM9 supporting O2x coz if chances are bleak wudn't i be better off with Oblack?
1.b) mine is up for about 40 hours and i did lots of mt, and i got 169mb free.
i dont see a problem with the ram size, its all super smooth here. and to my knowledge most people that know nothing about ram think more=faster which is not the case...

I'm no expert but having used computers since the VIC 20, I don't think I know "nothing" about RAM. That machine had 3.5KB of RAM which was fine back then, but there's a reason modern devices have more RAM than that. More *is* better in many cases.
My HTC Desire starts of with about 260MB free out of 576MB total, where as the Optimus 2X starts with ~180MB free (reflecting the 128MB that gets allocated by the Tegra2 GPU). This means less RAM available for applications you launch and want to keep in RAM. It's *mostly* "super smooth" here too, but it's annoying when e.g. the web browser or Google Earth gets kicked out of RAM and have to reload, since this adds several seconds when switching tasks. Applications themselves are super responsive, it's only when task-switching between several large applications that this happens.

I guess I'll try some third party ROMs and see how they behave. LG do bundle a lot of useless stuff with the stock ROM that you can't stop from starting automatically by default.

The Optimus 2X is not a bad phone at all. The display and build quality are very nice, the size is just right. Battery life is also quite good (for an Android phone, which still means you have to charge it every night). It's the only dual-core phone out of the ones on your list, which puts it in the same league as the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus in many ways.
I'm sure we'll get ICS eventually but it might be a longer wait than for something like the Nexus S. You'd better be prepared to root and switch to a different ROM however. Considering how long it took LG to release their version of Android 2.3 I wouldn't count on them releasing anything in 2012, if at all.
I have 187MB of RAM free after a clean boot with stock 2.3 (Version 20L), if I go directly to Programs and look at the amount of free RAM under the Running tab.
Also another thing that's bugging me off is
-O2x, i have heard reboots itself, now the very reason why i am buying a new phone is that my Nokia phone kept rebooting even when the battery was full, whether on stock OS or custom Firmware. That pissed me off.
-Does this issue still exists in newer Handsets after updating to 2.3 , becoz if it does wouldn't i be better off buying Lg Optimus black because i am stretching my budget just to accommodate the dual core of O2x and if after spending such a large amt it still reboots , i would be heartbroken
waiting for some helpful replies as i will be buying one of Oblack or O2x yesterday itself
I just installed CM7.1 and I'm happy to report that it now has 246MB of free RAM after a clean boot. Keep in mind that this is a completely clean install, where as my stock installation had a couple of widgets and notification apps going. But there's still a significant difference.
So part of the problem is that the LG launcher and customizations are not very optimized and waste a lot of RAM. Of course, the phone is still missing 128MB RAM when compared to other similar phones, but with a less bloated ROM, it's less of a problem. Let's hope the RAM requirements of ICS won't be too much higher.
Spontaneous reboots can be caused by many things. Android will reboot if an application hangs so completely that the phone ignores all input. It could also be a hardware problem such as overheating or low voltage. My O2X has never rebooted on its own so far. My HTC Desire started doing this when using the 3G radio a lot, likely due to overheating. That's why I switched to the O2X. Keep in mind that everything is pretty much "on the edge" with these devices that pack so much power into a small package. Avoid warming the device up in your jeans pocket (use an outer pocket of your jacket if possible) or using it heavily while its charging.
i didnt refer it to you when i was writing about the ram stuff... anyways, if you need more ram there is a kernel which can free i think up to 96mb from the gpu or so. so if you dont play games or recored hd then you might give it a try. kernel is called vorks stepchild or something like that and can be found in dev section. sorry cant copy links from xda app
Sent from my Optimus 2X using XDA App
Just a quick mention for the Nexus S here, that has the exact same RAM configuration, and Google are putting out ICS for it, so it can't be a huge problem.

It's crazy, stock rom Opera wouldn't even background after 2 seconds.. With CM7 I have RAM compression on 20% or something and Opera stays open for hours, it's great. There are kernels which have 32-128MB RAM hacks too that steal back from the GPU section. IronKrnl comes to mind.
There are some implications, 32MB loses reboot (which is nothing), 64MB+ gets dodgier.

You know nothing about RAM if you believe that statement then... Tell me, what about the operating system panicing to closs apps to free RAM, and falling on it's ass doing so is faster?
Use scripts like Supercharger, or Juwe ram script modified by Vadonka (search threads in dev section). Or System Tuner where you can easily modify freemem parameters.
try installing CM 7.2.0 plus ironkrnL ramhack here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359307
I recommended the 64mb hack ver.
the newest built already stable enough for daily use.

I'm using Juwe11's Ram Manager Pro in market (paid app). There is a free version also.
Brought my O2x !
Thanks for your advice guys, bought my O2x today , will be updating to stock 2.3 today.
a) any pre update advice ?
b) i dont intend to use stock rom for long, and as i am new to android and my previous nokia only taught me about making Custom Firmwares , So plz tell me which modded 2.3 should i use ? what is this i am reading about that the kernel is from someone else ? rom from some other Mod ? and also this baseband stuff ?
a) Try not to use it. The froyo ROMs are crap and will probably give you a poor opinion of the phone and/or AIDs
b) CyanogenMod, IMO
info about cm in general
i understand Cyanogen mod is an after market firmware,so
a) is it a custom rom or does it use the vendor's phone's rom ?
b) i understand we can also change kernel's , so does CM modifies the kernel ?

a. do not update to official 2.3. rooting it is pain in the ass. rooting froyo is easy. and official 2.3 is still sakk ess.
b. CM7 is your answer.

a. custom rom. you can google it.
b. cm use its own kernel. plus there are 3rd party kernel to optimize it further.
Questions
a) How will rooting help me?
b) i suppose i cant downgrade to 2.2 from 2.3 , right?
c) i can still use cm7 after updating to froyo right?
Yeah you'll be able to switch back and forth stock ROMs via Smartflash or KDZ, and you will be able to use CM no matter what version you have installed.
^now thats quiet helpful , just to be sure i am updating to 2.3 using lg's official crap whatever that is coz thats taking years to check/buffer whatever. or do u ppl use KDZ?
Sorry of OT in other topics!
OK, why is that thread?
Because I and some other users have really big problem with free RAM after 24 hours or less after uptime.
What does it mean, problems with free RAM?
From the first day with my new SGS I9000 first on CM 7.2 and now on AOKP M5 I Notice a problem: very fast dropping of amount of free RAM during uptime. For example after reboot I usually have about 140 mb of free RAM (cached processes included). After 24 hours free RAM drops to about 70 mb. I installed 'Memory Usage' to figure a out What is going on... And I saw one strange thing: Just after reboot 'Android system/settings storage' process consumes only about 50 mb of RAM, after 24 hours - 84 mb, after 48 hours - 107 mb.
Few images follow... Please notice I always made a screenshot with same amount of services running, except first one, there 'NOVA launcher' is not a service, but a cached process. Lately I switched to 'APEX launcher' cause it has 'stay in memory' feature to decrease launcher's redraw.
Just after restart

After 24 hours uptime
After 48 hours uptime
Again I use AOKP m5 with xl bm Devil2 kernel (40x mbs free). As you can see after 48 hours I have ONLY 41 mb free. What that 41 mb mean, that mean I have bad multitasking, few cached processes; and after I start something big (recent angry birds or instargram) that big process will stop all cached processes and even several running processes (in my case it shuts down whatsapp, dropsync, apex launcher and so on).
Before SGS I9000 I had lg optimus one p500 with same amount of RAM available for user (around 420 mb) and I NEVER had such issues.
It could have 100500 hours uptime without any decreases of free RAM and with great multitasking. Same screenshots from that phone will be uploaded here in 48 hours to prove.
Now guys please be so kind and test that on your ROM (ICS, GB, stock, custom) and post here your results. I need just 3 figures: 1)amount of RAM 'android system' consumes after restart 2)amount of RAM 'android system' consumes after 24 hours uptime, and 3) amount of RAM 'android system' consumes after 48 hours uptime.
You don't need to restart-wait 24 h-wait 48 h. You can check your results now (any hours uptime), wait +24 hours check results, wait another +24 hours check results, than restart, check results and post them here. And if you have spare android phone in your family, PLEASE test it too and post results here. It can help us and me understand if I'm wrong or right noob with I9000, if it's Samsung's issue or CM/AOSP issue. And yeah, sorry for bad English. Thanks for participating.
Edit 3: I use very low minfree taskkiller parameters , around 24 mb, to keep as much cached processes as possible
Edit 4: If you don't have that problem, please, share your setup (ROM/kernel). Thanks. (changed title)
Edit 5: Don't say 'I don't have such a problem, you, stupid noob' if you restart you phone every day and don't have experience with uptime more than 24 hours!
Edit 6: Removed other ROMS
Edit 7: 'Android system/settings storage'
I have a solution for you..
1) reboot once a day
2) don't use antivirus apps
Problem solved

Why? Who cares? First stop using the word '****', second before you ask
people to let them report their memusage it definitely might be a better
plan to google, look and search how memory/cache works and how to keep
it in hands, before saying it or trying to say it's a problem with the OS/ROM.
Try it with swap on devils kernel. I got 1.5 gb ram memory No problem with low ram.

not solved, it will only free 15 mb, and that 15 mb will became consumpted in a day a so

Thanks, was frustrated, corrected that word. Again, don't think it's global android's memory management problem. But of course I can 99% be wrong. But why on my old phone I didn't have that!?

It's probably you, your apps or something, i've never had such a problem.
Rephrase your question and ask nicely if someone could help you fix your problem because no one else will probably join you in posting ram stats because we dont have this problem.
Sorry if that seems disapointing, but it's probably not the OS or the phone, just your OS or your phone.
Perhaps ask in the AOKP thread, they might be able to help you seeing as you're running their rom.

Thank you very much!
Can't press Thanks for now, will do.
Tested latest CM9 nightly, working fine here for 50 hours. Plenty of free RAM for cached processes (good multitasking), 'android system/' process consumes only around 55-61 mb, no 'memory leak'. So it is (was) aokp's issue.
I'm really sorry for blaming CM9!
Depends on how many apps u have installed, try delete some of them..
have u ever tried a cache cleaner?. Try "easy cache cleaner" search play store. Android piles up loads of s... from the apps u are using and that is usually why your phone seems lagging after some days of use.
Anyway, u need to reboot your phone once a day or two. Just a good advise

I'm on AOKP milestone 5 with midnight kernel and i notice that system progressively takes up more ram as well, although it plateaus around 65mb ram. So it probably isn't AOKP issue. After 4 days without rebooting (with all ROMs i've been on), things seem to slow down a bit, and free memory seems to be lost somewhere.
I experienced it on aokp, as I said. Now, on latest CM9 - I don't have any problem with growing 'android system/' process and I have enough of free RAM.

I know about it, and it doesn't depend on amount of apps installed, but on amount of running apps with services. Cache cleaners useful for cleaning some free space on internal (phones's) memory (/data partition I believe).
And I don't want and need to reboot my phone every other day, because I don't have problems with free RAM with latest CM9. But still, Thanks for advise.
When I look at the XSP device info, the ram size 766 mb even though the phone is 1 gb
compared with another 1 gb ram phone, in the device info it says 971 mb, so that results in about 200 mb free extra memory in the second phone
I searched a lot and couldn't find anything about this.
Is there a way to make the Xperia SP show 900+ mb?
before anyone says that its system reserved, how come the second phone has a much smaller reserved value?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second phone is Tengda T94 (chinese phone) the multitasking difference in the XSP cannot be compared to the T94, the T94 is so much better
its very frustrating to look around for a solution for a 1 gb ram phone! to get better multitasking!!! i feel like im looking for a solution for an entry android device. i love this phone i wish i can find a way to get better multitasking as its an important basic smartphone feature
I think its just bad ram management. My SP on CM10.2 works without problems

there is nothing u could do in stock ROM unless u greenify everything + remove every bloatwares
but theres nothing wrong with the running ram, just let it filled... android is different alot than PC, in android the RAM is used to be filled, its normal... i remember some XDA members said that "unused ram is a wasted ram"

well i found the answer, this 250 mb of ram that is hidden is reserved for the gpu as i read on some article.
and there could be a way to amend that a little bit through some kernel.
im now disappointed and thinking about replacing this phone as multitasking is very poor and its a basic feature of a smart phone.
its strange to see a chinese phone that is 110 usd faster with better multitasking and even the screen quality and gaming is better! why cant a top company like sony do something to give access to the 1 gb ram which is very needed for basic use

don't think more Ram will get you faster, new chips it is ..( bigger Cpu Cache, bigger GPU, Dual channel memory )
sony need those 200mb for gpu, because it's a multimedia hd phone and gaming phone ( 320 gpu like xz :fingers-crossed: )...so you get hd movie recorder , hd games, even you can trow this to hd tv ...
i have this $200 chinnese quadcore with msm8225 , 203 gpu,1Gb ram ... and i believe xsp faster than this chinnese quadcore
and this phone don't have NFC, can't play full hd movie, lags on hd games, can't record full hd movie, no os update, and the list will go on ...
antutu about 13k on this chip, on quadcore mediatek chip about 16k, xsp about 21k ... you tell me who is the fastest ...
so, don't bother what is show on bench, user experience is...

Please no more chinese phone jokes,
unless you found one with a Snapdragon 600/800 etc, the GPU performance is in those 110 USD chinese "Super phones" is very poor.
Not even comparable to the Adreno 225 let alone 320.

Haha,my friend has a sgs4 and that has 2gb ram and 1.81 user accesible. At times his phone has 700-900 mb free...so dont complain
Phone is very good. And i honestly believe that another 100-150 MB of ram wouldnt make any difference...They would in my previous xperia X8 which had 27MB free ram all the time...But when you have 350+ free as i do now, being 500 wont change a thing.
With 250 EUR i got a phone with almost the performance of xpZ (yeah cause of 720 screen but its ok for me ) that wont slow down on everything you throw at it.So dont complain about the little missing RAM which as said is not wasted but is being used but for the GPU.:good:
Hey all

Xperia E1
Hey Guys. This section from my understanding was made for the more lower end devices at much cheaper prices with still capabilities of mid-range/high end performances. Well, what about the upcoming Xperia E1?
It should be in here because:
1) It is the follow on from the current Xperia E in this section.
2) It is affordable and mid-range, like the devices in this sections.
3)Specs are decent (Dual Core 1.2 Ghz, Android 4.3, only 512MB of RAM) and so can be improved (RAM Swapfiles/Increasers, CM11 or Android 4.4.2, Maxed CPU with Greenify).
What do you think? And to top it off - Over than the Swapper for Root making Swapfiles, does anyone know how to actually increase the RAM of the Xperia E (Virtual or Internally?). I have 409MB Max Ram and I want to add 512MB more from my Class 4/4GB Sd card. Any help? Because RAM will increase my game's performance by far.
STAY ON TOPIC - Xperia E1, Opinions on the phone, release date, leaked secrets about it, will it be on this forum???
No offense dude, but you should never mention the E1 in this section of xda... Makes us lament our decisions (and hate Sony even more)
EDIT : I will answer your question about RAM though.
An SD card is MUCH MUCH slower than RAM. AFAIK, RAM is the fastest memory of any machine.
So even if you do use the SD card, it will be extremely slow.
That slow.

HIT THE THANKS BUTTON IF I WAS OF ANY HELP
The E1.... is a crap phone in its range and should be avoided at all costs. In it's range, we've got the Xperia M, Galaxy S Duos 2, and (after some stretching of the budget) the Moto G. You seriously think anybody would want this thing? The prices introduced in Germany are (from amazon.de) EUR 144. This is roughly equal to Rs. 12k, the price of an Xperia M. An S Duos 2 comes for Rs. 11k.
Note that the price is for Germany - looking at India's economy, I think it won't be released for less than 13k.
Ohh...
Sorry I was going for Xperia m as my summer choice anyway...

Xperia E1 might go to the Xperia L, Xperia M sections too. Maybe its a Semi-Tamsui (if you know what I mean) like the Xperia E itself.
the xe1 is a class for it self ... i mean it comes with a completely new chipset (qct s400; 2x1,2ghz cortex a7+adreno 302) ... and dunno but it comes without front cam ?!
and btw xperia m/l comes with qct snapdragon s4 plus and this means that they have a better gpu (i think so),so when you like music more than play games or something buy e1,for performance i would definitely choose m/l cause of cortex a9 cores and andreno 305.

E1 firmwares and other stuff wont work for E ......so i dont care even a bit for E1
and the ram swaping damages memory card if used for a long time ,,,life of the card decreases
This is a very cool phone, the case is just a little thick.
Damn Cool
I love the Xperia E1: It looks awesome (really similar to the Xperia Z1 Compact), it has the Walkman button and it has Android 4.3 .
And from the first Russian hands-on it seems that the display is really bright and colorful, and it seems very fast
P.S : The price in Italy is 119 euros, so who has Miro, Tipo and E can switch to it without spending a lot of money
P.P.S: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBhjpTLsUK8 New hands on of E1
just bought e1 dual today... at rm499 + free 8gb microsd, its way better than my older tipo single. and i still cant root it, yet. now trying to update to the newest software version. other than the loud 100db speaker, i would say it win over tipo because: bigger screen resolution, a litter faster chip, and louder speaker. other than that, everything is copied over.

i didnt have those games yet. maybe tonight i try to get asphalt 8. weird, antutu seems to crash whenever it reaches the graphics test (the screen with those fishes swimming). still no way to root it, yet. testing the e1dual with raging thunder 2, it runs smoothly, way better than tipo (better graphics, maybe?)
Update:
No asphalt 8 for e1d today. no wifi, h+ on maxis? too expensive for me... Suggestions?
Can anyone get a System Dump of E1 for me
Thanks

Open the .ftf with WinRar and extract system.sin. In Flashtool go to tools>sin editor and extract system.sin. You will get a system.ext4 file(Linux archive file). Use any Linux archiver to extract the folders in the system.ext4 file.
For the ramdisk you can use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262656
You just need to extract the kernel.sin from the .ftf and follow the instructions. If you do not have Linux, Cywgin with perl installed should do.
Hope that helps

Did you change from ART to Dalvik? That *might* help... ART is still somewhat unstable, and lags and such depend alot on the kernel you're using. 2.6 is stable but a bit sluggish, 3.1 is faster but hás camera bugs and is battery hungry.
My P990 is better than your Galaxy S, IPhone or any other piece of trash you own!

Some version ago, ART was the default, but there were problems.
I remember that tonyp wrote that ART could give problems.
In last version the default is Dalvik, so it is non necessary to modify.
Thank you for helping me to understand why I have problems and you haven't.

Slimkat options
Hiya,
I was wondering if anyone had any memory options for the current Slimkat, with built in 3.1 kernel (basically out of box settings) that are suitable to keep it running somewhat smooth after a week or so.
The only thing i've been able to do is dumping of the cache, and using the Fstrim command to keep the lag at bay, but this still causes memory drops of some apps, ... like Phone calls being dropped, and keyboard crashing even when I have as much as 40mb of free memory.
I do keep Skype open in the background I need it to keep in contact with someone special. so i've greenified everything else that can be hibernated. except for Viper, and other CPU and kernel managers. ( and ofcourse Skype for above reason)
the phone app crashes alot after one week of use, i don't use other social apps like facebook or whatapp. I only use Skype, and Now browser. with normal Phone and Messaging app.
I may play music sometimes. but when finished I kill the app. allowing everything else to be alright.
anyway. if there is a preferred CPU / Gov / sched / swap / zram combination that is working well for people, I would appreciate some feedback on what works for them, with minimal cache dumping, and memory leaking.
Also. please let me know via PM, if I should post this elsewhere. I'll edit the post and correctly post in the correct thread, without cluttering up the thread.
Thank you.
Necro.
I'm hoping for this info too! Just installed Slimkat and despite it being quick for the first 30 minutes after clean install it gets slower and slower and now even pressing power on can take up to 30 seconds just to get to the lock screen. Yes, it's insane.

Yes you should buy RamExpander and expand your RAM to 1 GB.
And put CPU to 1.2 GHz.
At that settings phone is working great for weeks/months. (tested)

I was actually hoping for a app that would help me over clock my CPU, and allow Quad core access, . with Ram increase to 3gb, and turn my Tegra 2 into a tegra 5,
and just have the phone do .. .ya know, .... phone stuff.
but Ramexpander only helps the ram. so its not worth it for me.
