I bought a T-Mobile G1 off ebay, but its locked
If I flash the rom will it unlock it? I have no reply from seller and tmobile wont give me unlock code unless original user contacts them (must be 90 days use)
Or anyone know how to unlock? I'm in Australia
Thanks.

When you flash the phone it will not unlock it. You can use one of the other unlocking services they offer online.
Do they work? Is there anyway I can get it done free?

Yes they work. Alot of people on here have done it. The only way you can get it done for free is thru T-Mobile. Even tho you bought the phone second hand they should still do it for you, but being your in Australia I don't know if there policy is different. You can try to find someone you trust in the US and give them you IMEI and have them call it in for you.
Good luck with tmo, I tried everything even when I was a customer and they said wait 90 days. After I cancelled with them and asked again they said you have to be a customer with G1 data plan for 90 days. Other then that there is NO NO NO free way to unlock.
I have unlocked my girls G1 and my own with www.unlock-tmobileg1.com for $24 bucks and I got the code in about 20 minutes, another member here asked me what to use and I pointed him to them, he got his code in 12 minutes. I heard you can do it on ebay for a little less but I never tried it so I can't say for sure.

I wouldn't unlock your phone either. You prolly didn't pay your bill you cheap s.o.b.
Nope, and I suckered my way out of the contract without paying a ETF, after only 26 days. Har Har Har, 2 new G1's for only 150 each and first months bill. Oh and got it online when they had the free activation sale.

haha nice. I got a second phone I'm waiting to get out of contract. Don't know why I got a second phone, guess I was tryna do it big.
I just moaned about getting no service, which was actually true. I just made it seem worse then it really was.

Yea I don't think that would work for me considering I had that line for about 3 years. And I won't get rid of my other line with the G1 so they would be like you get service on one phone but not the other.
Tell them your son is in a boarding school out in the boondocks and he gets no service there. Just use the coverage map and see what area closest to you get little to no service. They will take 3 or 4 days to check it out then you can get out with no ETF. Gotta be crafty with your lies, just cuz you had service for 3 years doesn't matter much since now your son is going to school in a area without any reception, with you being a long standing customer AND having other lines they would rather keep you happy and lose 1 lines then risk losing you completely.

I bought it, and its unlocked. I notice when the keyboard is shown, and you press the screen forward its not strong. Is that usual?
Thanks.

You talking about when the screen is out and you press on the screen?
So i bought a G1 (Again), and i had it unlocked. Bought the code ($20, dont remember where exactly?) and received it within five minutes, great! I entered and was on the way to using my second G1 with AT&T. Well good times never last long, i flashed the 'Danger' SPL and fried it. Sent it in for repairs, received it, and, of course, its locked to T-mobile, new board=new IMEI which means i need a new unlock code. I called up HTC like they said i could last week and was told id receive a call within 48 hours with a code. Problem is, its been 48 hours!! So, im sitting her with a practically new G1, which i cannot use, this really sucks. So does anyone know where i can get the cheapest code? I dont really want to go and give another $20 for a code when HTC said theyd give it free and didnt follow through...If theres anything cheaper, please oh please, let me know. i planned on using the device monday when i got it back!

Call em back. Or wait. Those are your 2 cheapest options.
As a side note, I really cannot understand the difficulty in installing the 2005 SPL. I have done it on at least 10 G1s and never had any problem whatsoever.
I really dont get it either. I checked and my radio was the right one, was i supposed to flash it again maybe? Either way it fried it, and now i have an usable G1..
Call HTC back. The same thing happened to me and the customer service person was able to give me the code over the phone.
It would be much easier if tech support would just give it to me, i guess ill just have to make time to call them back today.
I got my code on ebay for $6. Took less than an hour to receive the code.
So i called HTC earlier to ask about it, it had be 48 hours. They looked it up and the request was put in for a code yesterday and i will not be able to get it until tomorrow. Why?? I should have had the code wednesday since i called monday. Theyve been great to me in everyway except for this...
Hey guys, this is kind of a response to Nexus 4 confirmed working on prepaid AT&T tablet dataconnect plan, but it also is kind of a guide in- and of- itself. I'm not trying to steal a thread or anything, please go to that thread and read the original post, it's very helpful. The responses are helpful too. If making a whole new thread is in bad taste I apologize, if a mod wants to close/delete this thread that's ok. Credit goes to ctowne for making that thread and finding out/testing that the N4 works on the Dataconnect plan.
I decided to take the plunge and do this. I haven't completed it yet, but I'm in the process. I kind of wanted to make a step-by-step guide or walkthrough for what I personally did to get this working for anyone considering this. Basically exactly what was needed to go from AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service to using the Dataconnect tablet plan and VoIP. Well, what I did anyway. I will update when I get over obstacles and whatnot, also, when I do/don't get it fully working.
Back-story: About 2 months ago, I bought my Nexus 4. I was previously on Verizon and had to switch carriers, getting a new number. I decided to go with AT&T's GoPhone service for $50/mo for 1gb of data and like 250 minutes. Then I found that thread and was interested, but debated whether to go through the process of porting my new number to Google Voice, spending the $20, waiting for it to take effect, potentially being without a phone for a few days, etc. or to get an entirely new number and tell everyone I know that I got a new number (again!).
Two days ago, I decided to go with the porting the number to Google Voice. My situation is actually unique in this. When I was on Verizon, I was actually on a plan with my family. I am almost 24 years old and decided it's about time I start paying for my own cell-phone bill. That, coupled with the fact that I needed to switch in order to use the awesome Nexus 4. Due to a mix-up in "upgrading" devices, we found out that my line was locked in for close to two more years. Basically my younger sister took "my" upgrade, locking my line in (that's how they get you, and why I will never sign a contract with a cell-phone company). After calling Customer Service, we figured out that we can "suspend" my line, free of charge for 6 months, we just have to call in to do it again after 3 months (standard increment of time they "suspend" lines). 6 months is the magical number we needed because then a different line is cleared of a contract, and with some fiddling, we can basically drop that other line, switch the number to my old line, thereby dropping my line more-or-less.
The CSR for Verizon we talked to said they don't just suspend lines for no reason. Apparently it's mainly used for stuff like troops being deployed overseas, they will suspend their line to kind of cut them some slack. The CSR said they were willing to do that because my parents have been loyal Verizon customers since like 2004 or so. Point is, I don't think it would hurt if someone tried to call in and get a nice CSR to suspend their line for 3 months. Worst they will do is say no. Just a possible option for anyone locked in a contract.
Anyway, my old line wasn't suspended yet, so I decided to port my old number. The guides are all correct.
1. First, request the port in Google Voice. You will need your Verizon, or whatever carrier you have, account credentials, so have those handy (I have never ported a number before, I didn't know that).
2. Right after that, go to Verizon's site and request a new phone number for that line. That actually didn't work for me, so I had to call in. It was a 10 minute call with a machine to do so, but was also free. The process will take exactly 24 hours. Seriously. I don't know why it's exactly 24 hours, but it is.
Once I got the email that it was done the next day, I called my other phone and it worked. I can't vouch for SMS, I didn't think to try and I'm at work right now with just my Nexus. I can try it later today.
That's where I am right now. I plan on going to my local AT&T store without a tablet (obviously) and try to get a SIM card activated on Dataconnect, and try it in my Nexus 4. Back when I first activated my phone, I took it into the store and warned them that the IMEI on the back might not work, and they said that's ok, they have phones that they steal IMEI's off of all of the time. Sure enough, they tried to snipe one off a phone in a drawer, which I saw was full of phones, but it didn't work. After that, they tried the IMEI on my Nexus and it worked. So there's another point; the Nexus 4 IMEI works on their GoPhone prepaid plan. What I'm getting at is, I might be able to just walk in, say I have my Nexus 7 at home, and maybe the person I talk to will just grab an IMEI off of a tablet there.
I will try that today and then try it in my Nexus 4. Then I'll buy GrooveIP and try calling in/out from my N4. If all goes well, I'll post back with a cheerful confirmation. If it fails, I will still post back and try to figure out what went wrong. I sure hope it works, I would love to pay only $30/mo for service and get way more data than I have now.
*EDIT*
Went to the store today and got a different CSR. She didn't want to offer me an IMEI like I had hoped. If I would have gotten the other CSR that activated my phone, I bet I could have gotten one. Asked if I just brought the IMEI, could they activate a SIM for me and she said yes. Fair enough. If anyone has an IMEI that I could use, please PM it to me. That'll really help me out. Otherwise, I might try and generate my own.
*EDIT*
Went back the same day and got the nice CSR that set up my phone. Didn't really understand what I meant/was doing, but tried to help me nonetheless. After a half-hour of trying and calling AT&T corporate help lines and stuff, and getting transferred around, she basically said that I could just keep the SIM card, since it looked like I knew what I was doing and would figure it out. Turns out, everything worked. Calculated my own IMEI and went to the Dataconnect website and typed in the IMEI and ICCID of the SIM. Everything worked once I applied the correct APN. Initial setup of GrooveIP took a bit though. Gotta mess with the settings. Anyway: it worked! Very excited.
so i sent my phone back for an rma. they were going to send me an xcode for a replacement motomaker phone, rather than fix mine and send it back. the problem is... i have been five days waiting on my xcode. i was told by customer service that i should have the code in 24 hours. <--i called them 24 hours after they received my busted phone. since i didnt have the number yet, they forwarded my case to motomaker support. i got an email from them on saturday stating that i should have one by the end of the week. so here it is wednesday and i still have yet to received my code. i am getting extremely impatient. i missed out on the current soak because of it.
anyways.... how long did it take you to get your xcode? i know they work weekends, and i know they are working round the clock in that factory. it just seems like i should have the code by now.

Lots of these fall through the cracks. My rma experience was similar. Lots of phone calls did the trick.

thanks. i am going to call them today at noon. that will be six days. i just wish i could make a decision on what my new colors are going to be.
I have had a HELL of an experience with my phone RMA. First they said they would replace it, then changed their minds and said they would fix it. So I sent it in. They have had my phone for 15 days and they haven't even entered it into the RMA system. I have spent hours and hours on the phone (beginning more than a week ago) and chatting online and had it "escalated" multiple times. I was hoping my experience was isolated; apparently it isn't.
I love my Moto X and I love Moto's new life, but they need to get their support together NOW or they are going to lose customers. I was about as patient and happy and trusting of a customer as they could ever expect and they have completely drained all of that good will.
tll;dr Moto needs to work on support. If you RMA a phone ride their butts and make sure it gets done.
Update: Just got a call. They are now replacing my phone with a free case. I now have to wait 24-48 hours to get my code.

yeppers... that is definitely where i see my issues heading. i am about to give them a call. i assume you had an rma number when you sent it in and they just now opened the fedex box? on a side note... i was thinking about just ordering one and having them put a hold on my card since it is taking so long. but after your story i dont think that would be the wisest thing for me to do.
I would definitely not recommend doing that lol. Just make sure that you call them and let them know exactly how late they are. Also, MotoMaker support doesn't work weekends (I think). At least the phone number only works Mon-Fri. I would call them up right now if you have the chance and get things moving now before they get any later.
All I'm saying is that I really hope my code comes on time. I've already had to wait longer than I owned the phone and I would like it back. Also, I've been forced on to a shattered iPhone 4S so yeah....I've suffered enough lol.

lmao. same boat here my friend. i dropped mine on day five. sixteen inch drop. shattered my phone. it took four days of calling and IMs before they would give me an rma. i actually told them on day four that i was not getting off of the phone until they sorted it out and got me an rma number. and as of now i have been without my phone for seven days. i am back to my old gs2 that needs to be reset with a passion.
good luck. ill reply back in a bit after i have called them.
edit: they started building my phone on a saturday morning at 2am. finished on sunday morning 1:07am. i just put two and two together.
edit #2: just got off of the phone with them. he tried to tell me that i got an email stating that the phone had been sent to me and i should have it by the end of the week. which was a complete lie. so i got irritated and got a bit louder. explained to him the situation and that he did not need to escalate it to motomaker support because it was his office that gave me the rma. and that they specifically told me, when they called me back after i talked to a lady with motomaker support, to ignore anything that might come from motomaker support.
at the end... he said, "'rest assured', we have your case in the works and you will be contacted by motomaker support within the next 24 hours." i said, "so in other words there is nothing you can do and i am just screwed."
he also asked me for the tracking number. which means they have not scanned my phone back into the system. i feel powerless and i dont like it. i feel like my only recourse is to start talking negatively about motorola and the moto x on all of the tech sites i comment on. so i can warn people on what they are in for.
tl;dr - im not happy and moto support blows.
so wait you dropped the phone and broke it, and are posting on here to whine that they are taking a while to RMA a phone that you broke.
why do so many of you idiots come and post about RMAing stuff that you damaged on your own. is XDA the new, whine about how clumsy i am and entitled to feel that i should get replacements for my own stupidity place now?
physicaly damage usually isnt covered, maybe that is why they are having a hard time getting your RMA.
i bought a t-mobile XT1053 , had a small defect on it and decided to return it. talked to the guy on the chat, mailed them the phone refund cleared in about a week. no problems.
i paid for the motocare. this means they send me a device while i am sending mine back in for repair. which is what i hoped would have happened. but it didnt. my imei kept erroring out in their system. which is in no way my fault at all. so they wanted to do it this way instead. also... the email i received from motorola said they would be giving me my code as soon as they received the device. THAT WAS DAYS AGO! so get off your high horse fool!
had they told me it was going to take this long when i got my rma... i would have no room to *****. had they not sent me an email stating they would have the code to me the next day... i would have no reason to *****. had the lady on the phone not told me they should have had my code to me the next day, i would have no reason to *****. i made this post to find out what other people's times were.nothing more. nothing less. what happens after the op just happens.

F.A.Q.
I think a recap is due...
Some background... For the Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers Wireless, and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web Site. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers. That is where this China Middle Man, and the Chinese web site/seller, comes in... Its a way to possibly get your bootloader unlock code if Moto can't/wont give it to you. If you are successful in getting your code from the Middle Man, it will be exactly like the code you would have received from Moto, except for the cost and the source.
If your X is NOT from Verizon, ATT, or Republic wireless, its worth checking Motorola's Web Site first, as either way voids your warranty when your phone is not a developer edition. If you can't get the bootloader unlock code from Motorola, then this China Middleman is your only other option right now (and for who knows how long).
What phones does this work with?
Based on replies and posts to this thread, it has been confirmed to work for most, but not all, Moto X, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini and G which have been assembled between January and June 2014 that have been submitted. Some others assembled out-side that range have been reported to work.
Republic Wireless X assembled in 2013 have had a fair success rate, at least enough that it is worth trying.
Since the middle man has restarted selling codes, users with Moto X from Verizon, ATT that were assembled in 2013 have rarely been able to receive a code. So you can try, but you will likely get a "no code available" response.
Update 10-21-2014: As time goes on, we are seeing an increase in post from users who have been "unsuccessful." (either they couldn't get a code, or the code they got didn't work). Its still worth a try.
This does NOT work for the 2nd Generation X or the "2014 Moto X" with the 5.2" screen.
Does it matter what ROM is on my phone?
Unlike using hacks and exploits to root, when using a Bootloader Unlock Code (from Moto or the Middle Man) your phone can be on ANY firmware version. Updates will not patch the ability to use the bootloader unlock code. And future Updates will NOT LOCK your bootloader.
On the Moto X, to find your assembled date...
Boot into FastbootAP/Bootloader mode
Option 1: power off, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously NOTE: you may need to have the USB cable disconnected first.
Option 2: If USB debugging option on your phone is turned on, and you have a properly setup ADB, AndroidSDK Platform tools, and moto drivers on your pc... Open a command prompt and type... adb reboot-bootloader The phone will restart into the bootloader/fastboot menu.
Option 3: You must already be rooted: you can use an application like Quick Boot (Reboot) which is available for free in the Google Play Store. It has options to reboot your phone normally, reboot into recovery, or reboot into bootloader.
Once on the FastbootAP/Booloader screen, Use the VOL DOWN to scroll and highlight Bar Codes, then use VOL UP to select it. There will be a date listed there. (use vol up or vol down to exit the screen).
How long will this be an option? or... How long will the China Middleman continue offering the codes?
We don't have any insight on that. When the China web site, and then middleman, originally started it was up for a while, then suddenly and without warning, stopped on April 1. When it restarted, this thread was born, and it has been going ever since. However, this time around, we've seen a lower success rate with getting codes.
How to send a request/payment..
The price is 45usd. (he will receive slightly less due to fees)
Send Paypal for goods/services to [email protected]
In the notes, include your IMEI and Email.
NOTE: be sure to use Goods/Services so you can dispute if you have any issues. Payment sent as GIFT can NOT be disputed!
How long does it take to get my code, or get a response?
Response times have varied from less than an hour, to almost a week. So be patient. If its been over a week, you can try to add the person to Skype and message.
I got a response that my code wasn't available. Now what?
Usually he refunds the money when replying your code wasn't available. If not, you'll need to file a PayPal dispute.
If your phone is only two or three weeks old, you can try waiting a month, try again and see if he gets a new batch of codes which contains yours.
Otherwise, you are out of luck.
UPDATE: You can try Sunshine which is being discussed in -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471 That thread has the information, link to the Sunshine tool, and discussion.
Sunshine only works with certain ROM versions, but when it works on your phone it DOES UNLOCK the bootloader just like using the code would.
If Sunshine doesn't work, then you are out of luck.
I got my code, now what?
Most emailed responses containing the code have included your IMEI code and unique unlock code. The unlock code is 20 digits long and is case sensitive. Please Copy/Paste when using it, rather than typing it.
Back up your phone! the Bootloader Unlock process WILL WIPE all data, apps, settings, etc!! BACK UP FIRST!!
Make sure you have a working Android SDK/PlatformTools/ADB setup
Boot your phone into FastbootAP/Bootloader mode
Connect your phone to your PC via USB cord
From a command prompt on your PC issue the following command... fastboot oem unlock UniqueCode NOTE: please replace "UniqueCode" with a copy/paste of your code from the email!
after the process is successful, your phone will reboot and you will see the Unlocked Bootloader warning logo.
For a more detailed or novice friendly set of instructions, see -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Unlocking.htm
Keep your code in a safe place. While there should be no need to relock the bootloader, if you ever need to unlock the bootloader again, you'll use that same code.
So now that I've unlocked my phone, is it now the same as a "Developer Edition"?
For all intents and purposes, Yes. From the standpoint of rooting, flashing, custom roms, hacks, etc. You can use the same instructions and do the same things. The same caveats and rules that apply to a developer edition, apply to you.
Unlike a developer edition, your warranty will be voided because you've unlocked your bootoader (if the warranty provider notices you've unlocked your bootloader).
So now that I've unlocked my phone, HOW DO I ROOT?
Download the latest TWRP Recovery from -> http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234 (under the Download-Fastboot heading) and the latest SuperSU from -> http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu or the latest CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
And use them while following the instructions in this post -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738
Thats great, but I still have questions...
When this first came about, I put together this post in the old thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51363645&postcount=394
I've added to it, clarified a few things and re-posted here -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Unlock1.htm
Those two versions contain pretty much all of the questions/answers I've seen asked.
EDITED: Aug 13, 2014 Reason: added Background, Moved "what phones does it work with.." section, added "Does it matter what rom.." section, and added rooting info
EDITED: Aug 28, 2014 Reason: moved "how long a response could take" to its own section so it stands out more

I know it's a big unknown, but what are the chances these guys will have unlock codes for the X+1? My parents are about to renew, but they will need 1 unlocked hotspot for an unlimited plan. With Aug 20th supposedly being the release date, 2weeks away, should they wait for the +1?

Nothing will be known until the X+1 comes out and someone tries to unlock it.
And this service could stop at any time.
My advice is something I got flamed in this thread for in the past.. but since you asked... Since you'll have to pay full price anyway (to keep unlimited data) Consider getting a Dev Edition X for Verizon while they are still on sale for $324.99. Its definately cheaper than buying a full price X+1 when they come out, and you can certainly unlock the bootloader without voiding the warranty.
Tag for outcome.
I got the email as well. We'll see what happens!

Everyone who didn't get on the first boat, I would recommend jumping on this asap (if he's really back.) Nothing like having a self made Dev edition and complete freedom with nowhere near full retail cost.
Screw it, Im in. Not waiting around and getting left behind this time.
Yep, got an email from him this morning as well (should be 40+ of us since he has no idea how to use bcc). Stopped what I was doing and sent the payment & info. Will also post any results.
Might I remind everyone who is doing this to send payment as goods/services this time - the people who sent as a gift couldn't get a refund last time.....
edit: also wanted to mention that i went from 10-20 spam emails a day to over a hundred after emailing this dude the last time..... so use a junk email address you don't care about.
The original link does not seem to work for me. Can someone confirm the URL?

He just responded to me. Apparently the 2013 models aren't in the database. He's initiated a refund for me.

bummer.. guess this means i need to initiate a refund:
"2013 production was not found in the database machine, I will refund initiated paypal dispute
Can't find 2013, the data do not know where to put, no way"
edit: second email to the bigger group:
"moto bl Notice
Can't find 2013, the data do not know where to put, no way
2014 100% ok"

So, sounds like there's still an opening for devices made this year? Seems very strange, but I guess promising for the minority of people who have newer-issued devices. I bought mine on swappa, so I have no clue whether it would be included in the 2013 or 2014 group. If I had bought it in 2013, I'd probably do my best to get an on-warranty replacement any way I could.

it's really weird. with how flaky this situation has been, it's not even worth trying that, this could be closed up again pretty quickly.. if the dude can even get 2014 codes. strange..
btw you should probably be able to find a manufacture date or something somewhere, i dunno.
so did any other 2013's file a dispute yet? i'm pretty sure that's what he meant, that we do that and he refunds - that's how it worked last time. i didn't do it yet just on the small chance he figures it out or something, who knows. i sent him an email asking for more info but haven't gotten a response.

I mean, is he refunding your money? If the dude is in good faith it sounds like there's no harm in trying because if it doesn't work you can get your money back. If not, is there any way we can find out what devices he has access to codes for? I am looking into finding info on manufacture dates but running into a lot of dead ends. Anyone have any ideas? That way people could check beforehand and save themselves the trouble.

Only place I would think to check would be the barcode sticker on the box that has IMEI etc. Otherwise you'd probably have to rip the phone apart to find it somewhere.
But yes, when this went belly up a month ago, the bunch of us who had money out to him, as long as you sent the paypal money as goods/services (and not gift) you could file a dispute with paypal and he was immediately refunding people when you did that. The others who sent money as gifts to try to help him out with paypal fees ended up getting screwed because they couldn't dispute it and he didn't respond to any emails asking for refunds - you had to go through a paypal dispute, but then he was very quick to issue it.
All that shadiness aside, if you send it for goods/services, I think you're fine trying.

Interesting. It's cool to see consumer safeguards working as they're intended--if he's not giving out any refunds for "gift" payments he's not interested in the ethics, just his standing with PayPal. Love it when these systems work the way they should.
I bought my X online through swappa; the guy sent it in the original box... just looked at the sticker, and nope, looks like august of 2013. Looks like I'm still out of luck. :/
I have a 2013-purchased Moto X and sent over the $45 (prior to seeing the messages above) as a Goods/Service at 11am EST. I will update this thread with any messages I receive. Fingers crossed! I'd love to know what is going on behind-the-scenes with where this database is coming from, why would 2014 work but not 2013, etc.

please do. i'm waiting for some feedback before i request a refund, even it if may be hopeless for us.
I, unfortunately, paid as a gift. I have a 2014 so maybe I'll get lucky. I'll post my results.
