So some inconsiderate person at work just picks up my phone without asking, and runs her broke-ass fingernails across the screen, BAM! instantly two fine hairline scratches right through the middle, all the way across. ARGG! Is there anyway I can buff these out, or get a new plastic screen?

It's probably a little too late, but a screen protector is always a good idea! Once you find out how to get it fixed, I highly recommend using one.
Well, it worked for mine but i still say test, do this:
- Toothpaste, it can be used to sand things with, like shiny plastics
- now, before you put half a tube on it, it would be safer to test first, take a little bit of toothpaste on your finger, little bit of water, mix between 2 fingers, then in circles rub a small corner of your screen, for a few minutes
- if it doesnt get less shiny, you can go rub circles over the scratch, once again a little toothpaste and a little drop of water to mix toothpaste with (makes it easyer to rub bscly)
The above got a nasty (unfortunatlly deep) scratch to be almost invisible when using device (cuz its deep u can still see it when the device is off) on my htc touch diamond, wich i caused the second day i got the device, by having the diamond and its headphones in the same pocket
The mentioned displex is a paste somewhere in between toothpaste and silver-cleaner-stuff, it would most likelly work better then my trick, but hey, maybe you can save yourself a few quids by getting the scratches off for 'free' (assuming you have toothpaste already) i do still advice you to even when you get displex test on a tiny part of a corner first, theres a whole lot of different plastics on phones. you can pick displex up at those phone stores that work with several contracters (orange tmobile etc)

Displex is really awesome! Some ime ago i bought it for fixing my Laptop-Screen and even there (on an ASUS Crystal Display) it worked perfectly!
The only negative thing about Displex in my opinion is, that if you are using it too often, the screen will become kinda "unshiny" just like after polishing a car too much.... i noticed that after i used it several times to fix my Samsung D900 Screen
And regarding the screen protector delivered with the devide... I think it is a really good thing! I attached it to my Diamond after one week and didn't notice any differences... it even worked better when using the fingers to tap the screen.
Good advice here....tooth paste is good for removing most of a deep scratch BUT test first....
Displex to get the fine stuff....I would still test this as well, VERY CAREFULLY of course!!

Do not use toothpaste unless you test it first. Different toothpastes use different size grit. You may end up causing more problems.
To polish plastics, I use jeweller's rouge. Just rub some on a clean cloth and work away. It's slow but there's les chance of screwing things up.
If it's only a couple of fine scratches that are difficult to see, then leave it. Polishing will change the surface texture so you will need to polish the entire surface, not only the area of the scratches. It's doubtful that you'll find anything to match the original surface.
Ok I got one of the anti-glare ones and I've got dust under it. The package says washable.....
I'm not too good with this but several websites say to use a little water in putting on one of these. Is it safe to do that with the Nook? Has anyone been able to put one on without getting dust under it?
Yes I have the anti glare on, with no dust and no water used.
The trick that I learned from applying screen covers on my Nexus, was if you get something underneath; lift it up, try not to get your fingers on the sticky side; and use a piece of scotch tape to lift off the dust from the sticky portion of the screen, then put it back down.
I had good luck installing the glossy protector. I didn't use water, I just scrubbed the screen with the felt that came in the packaging. Scrub it really well to get all the oil off (dont bare down really hard, just make multiple passes). Use clean hands while installing it. What I do is peal only the top 1/3 of the backing off, get it lined up on the screen (square to the top) and stick it down. Then slowly peal and press the remaining 2/3s. This way you never touch the sticky side, and you limit its exposure to incidental crud.

I had dust under mine too. Didn't have a problem with the smaller phone screen but a tablet screen is harder to do. I washed mine and shook as much water off as I could and applied it. As I pushed the bubbles and water out to the edges, I dried it off with a cloth to prevent it from seeping into the nook. My nook is still running for 5 mos now.
My screen has been naked from when I got it. To tell you the truth, this screen can take a hell of a beating as I've dropped my keys on it once or twice and still not a single scratch.
I put the BandN hardshield type protector on mine and its bulletproof. It's kind of stiff so it's pretty easy to get on straight and if you do as suggested with the backpeel off its pretty easy to get on without dust. I got a tiny cat hair under the corner but it's hardly noticeable and doesn't cause any glare at all. You can't tell my nook even has a cover without sticking your nose on it.
There is a thread about this in the nook accessory forums area. They say to clean your screen and apply it in a steam filled bathroom. The steam from the shower keeps the dust out of the air. It worked great for me.

I totally agree with this! After many Dsi and Ipod touch applications in my bathrom, I set off to do my NC in there too! The dust is so much less with the hot shower running, I got a Perfect install!
Ditto on the shower, only time ever that I got a perfect install was with a lil steam in the room. Also, if you want to go the extra mile, I read a tip somewhere that said to put a little water in a bowl, add a drop or two of dish soap and then dip your fingertips in it before applying. In a perfect world you would never touch the sticky side but I live far from there and with the soapy water deal helps a lot in repositioning since anything I touch dries clear.
You can actually get the whole sticky side SLIGHTY wet and just slide the thing around as long as you let it dry a day or so after install but I always worry about a drop of moisture sneaking in the side of the screen so I stick with finger tips.
Great...gonna have to peel it off tonight and try to reapply.
Used the anti-glare ones and got some dust under one. Just lifted the side with the dust and used some masking tape to get the dust stuck on the protector.
I applied my screen protector using the water trick. I used a little deionzed water. Just wet the screen protector, place it gently (you can move it around while it's wet). Then squeeze out the water using a card. While you do that collect the water off the edge using kitchen paper.

Which protector did you use? I got one off amazon and it's just slightly off so that there's a large spot in one corner that's off.
I installed the Nook protector and decided that all I gained was another surface to collect fingerprints. It's glossy and not matte like other protectors so fingerprints show up just the same.
It did appear to make the touchscreen a little more stable. I don't seem to get as many false touches. Of course, it could just be me.
I am not sure it was worth it other than protecting the screen from any significant gouges.
I've only had my unit a day and decided to give it a quick clean to remove the finger prints using nothing more that breathing on it and a spectacle cloth. Whilst doing this I found what at first appeared to be 2 finger prints on the left edge of the screen which did not appear to be coming off. I then tried a damp cloth followed by glasses cleaner and then a dab of washing up liquid. None of which seem to have any affect. The strange thing is that you cannot feel them or hardly see them after cleaning but as soon as you run your finger over them the grease from your finger makes them visible like a finger print. Also running a damp cloth over them makes them visible until the moisture evaporates and then they are gone. I have been incredibly careful and know I could not have caused them but was wondering if anyone else has this issue or how I can remove these marks without causing damage as my unit is perfect except for a tiny bit of screen lift which doesn't really bother me.
My Nexus also has a issue like this, but it's like a big smear near the top or the screen. I am 100% sure that I never dropped anything on it

Luckily I'm getting it replaced anyway as the screen lift issue has returned, but I still would have got a replacement anyway due to this new issue.
Sounds like a problem with the anti-finger print coating that's normally used on phone/tablet screens.
I don't think you'll be able to fix it, if you obsess over it and keep trying to clean it off chances are you'll make it worse. Either get over it or exchange it.
Perhaps it's a fingerprint on the underside of the glass. I'm not sure. Hard to tell without pics.
Maybe a screen protector will cover this up. Can you feel it when you run your fingers over it?

Nah it is on top of the screen, you can sorta feel it - it is slippier than the rest of the screen. If I breath on it you can see that it is not affected whereas the rest of the screen goes grey.
I am really careful with plastic screens, but this one is glass. I squirt some Windex on a tissue and use that. Works great - but use at your own risk. Ops problem sounds like a bit of silicone on the glass. Use an appropriate solvent. Squirt nothing at the tablet - use a slightly moist tissue.

I also bought mine from Tesco Direct, phoned them up and then sent me a replacement the next day! (this was for the first replacement)
The replacement they sent me now has the screen lift and this screen issue. I phoned them and they said they are out of stock atm, but when it's in stock they will send me another replacement - they also gave me a £20 refund! :laugh:

I am a Best Buy employee so should be no issue with getting an exchange. Looks like we have one of the 64GB AT&T ones in stock. Gonna be there bright and early to get mine exchanged.
I would advise everyone to keep an eye out.. I actually didn't notice it this morning. Around 6pm I noticed a black part on the screen and thought it was a glitch, so restarted but it was still there.
The line on the right side is just my temporary screen protector film. LOL. I bought an Invisishield and will install it on my replacement device tomorrow.

Did you go with the regular or HD InvisibleShield? I'm not a big fan of their new alcohol swab method for activating the adhesive on the HD model. I ended up using left over spray from several previous InvisibleShield installs.
When I used the alcohol swab provided, it just left lint embedded in he adhesive and I ended up with a bunch between the glass and the screen protector. I saw it before I even began to squeegee, so I broke out the spray and went old school. Turned out perfect after that.
InvisibleShield really screwed up this new application method because it leaves no room for error.

I did get the HD model. Yeah the swab was horrible. Mine had issues it has some lint on the bottom right corner. Screen is fully visible but slightly cloudy. Good thing I only paid $5 as an employee lol. I'll just buy another.

Actually, your InvisibleShield screen protector doesn't look anything like mine. Mine covers completely to through the curved edges. Is your protector for a different device?

Yeah, thanks for affirming that. I'm pretty sure they did the whole thing as a huge cost saving measure. It damn sure wasn't an improved method to install.
If you compare the savings between the difference in cost for the little plastic liquid spray canisters they provided and the supposed new and improved cheap alcohol swabs, Zagg just made out like a bandit.
Their packaging and marketing keeps getting better and better, but their quality and service keeps getting worse and worse.

No this pic is yesterday morning and is not an invisible shield lol I said I installed after I took the pic. Installed it last night and looks just like yours. How did u do it so perfectly? I think I messed up by not using the squeegee in one motion. I did sections and I think it dried as I was doing it. I have some cloudiness and lint on the bottom. I'll have to get a new one.

I knew as soon as I saw that piece of crap alcohol swap that the new method was flawed. ZAGG has lost their damn minds!!
The whole point behind getting these types of screen protectors on right is to get them and your fingers sprayed down really good. Once both are pretty much soaking, I pinch the protector between my finger and slide off excess fluid which in turn takes the lint/dust with it. Then I spray just a bit more on and apply it. I get it aligned and squeegee. While you are squeegeeing (is that a word?) and you come across a bubble that isn't going away, it isn't a bubble. It's lint/dust. Simply lift the protector at the edge and spray or apply some additional soapy water with your sprayer or fingers and get it out of there. Carefully fold the screen protector back so as to not allow additional lint/dust to get under there while you were dealing with the last one.
I don't try to use the squeegee to get every bubble. I just get most of the water out. Once 90% of it's gone, I work the edges with my fingers and around things like home buttons and camera lenses and sensors.
I guess my point is, even though their new instructions call for the use of the new alcohol swap, the old soapy water trick works perfectly fine. Actually, better.

Looks pretty good to me. If your trying to get it closer to the edge, all I did was continue to work mine while it was still wet. Just a little at a time while I was working the water out from the center of the screen towards the edge.
Good luck man. Like I said, I think it looks great as it is now.

Got another one and did it again. Lint is gone now but got some micro bubbles. Let's see if it goes away. Not noticeable when screen is on.
Also even with no Zagg. I noticed some screen blemishes. Like it seems cloudy in some parts. I put brightness all the way while I was wiping it down to prepare the Zagg install. It's very noticeable. I may need to get my phone replaced again smh.
That completely sucks to hear about the cloudiness issue. I haven't heard of that one yet. I've heard of the swirls, scratches, and whites appearing yellow issues, but not the cloudiness.
I would lose my mind if I had to take a phone back twice for a screen related issue. It's probably not as big of a deal for you since you can do it while you're at work so to speak, but when your spending a grand on a phone, you just don't expect to have to take it back two times to be replaced.
Switching gears back to the bubbles in the Zagg. If you turn the screen on and they are barely noticeable, but with a slight prism light effect to them, you're fine. They'll dry up and be gone in hours.
If however you turn the screen on and see a shadow, it won't be going away when it's dried.

Yeah the Zagg is good enough for me.
And yeah I can see the cloudiness when scrolling on a white page in Chrome. I really don't want to have to exchange it again but may have to if it is really annoying me over the nextra few days.
It's like gray smudges going diagonally on the glass. I can't tell if its on the actual amoled panel or glass.

Has anyone who plays a lot of games notice a smudge that just will not go away? I play injustice 2 a lot and 2 spots on screen where my thumbs are usually it looks like I have worn away a costing on the glass. I can buff with a cloth but you can still see them as you turn phone in right light. I'm not trying to be nitpicky but it's not even month old and paid slot of money. I'll try and post pics when I get home and have access to another camera

I play a lot of Real Racing 3 (1-2 hours a day sometimes less) I have not noticed any fingerprint smudges that would not wipe away. My recommendation would be to get Eye glass or lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Wipe it down and see if that helps. They have been working great so far and I use them to wipe down everything with a screen. Just remember to wash them frequently as well. I just throw mine in the laundry and then hang dry them.

I use a microfiber cloth and even after wiping it as still there. After cleaning just barely noticeable but comes back badly later. it's bad enough that it looks like dead screen

Maybe you somehow wear off oleophobic coating, some chemicals will do that either when somehow deposited from your fingers or when cleaning.

Either try Samsung service center to fix it, or try fix it yourself. I use screen protector, so never experience it myself and I don't see this being mentioned too often, so I wouldn't even begin to speculate why it happened to you.

i've also got one unit with "smudges" on it after having the phone for just 2 days. i had to argue yell and get mad at Samsung technician when they said it was "normal", and I wasn't covered by the 7 day replacement warranty. "smudges" aren't noticeable when screen is on, it's more visible in black screen/screen off. i had to get the screen dirty with my finger natural oil/dirt, to give emphasis on the "smudges". i also used my other phone's camera flash to make it more visible. i've also tried putting those oleophobic liquid protector but it didnt help at all. the pictures i posted were after i applied the liquid so you be the judge.
is "smudge" the right term? not sure bout calling it a stain too. coz it's more like oil... just like when you put a drop of oil on a paper towel.
I actually have that as well, mine is on the Volume button up area the size of "a index finger". While wiping with my microfiber cloth, everywhere is smooth except that part, when I wipe I don't wipe it hard at all since the day I got my hands on it. I believe it's a defect right out the box and I don't use any screen protector.
I just saw your image Pryor06 except mine is not noticeable both on and off screen but it can be felt when wiping. Any conclusion?

i actually haven't noticed any difference in the "texture"(?) of the screen. all felt smooth except with the visuals/optics of the screen when screen is off/black. i was on the bus on my way back home when I noticed the smudges under the sunlight. I had no cleaning materials that time, so for the meantime I used a little of my saliva:angel: on one part of the screen's problem. The surrounding part got clean, except the part with the issue. After I got home, I used alcohol and wiped the phone clean, thoroughly but gently, before applying the oleophobic liquid protection. "Smudges" were also around the bottom left, bottom center, bottom right of the screen but not as worse. I thought the top middle part smudge was enough evidence for me to claim warranty.
Blecap, try using white light from a phone camera to check your screen. Not sure about SG, but if you could get it replaced for warranty then go for it. Otherwise, I think all Samsung Note 8 have Concierge service, wherein our phone's screen is under warranty for free replacement of screen+labor for 6 months from date of purchase.
I had to be careful in handling the phone since day 1, because I wasn't able to get a screen protection. It's hard to prove and claim warranty here in the Philippines. All Samsung have to say is it's the fault of consumers, or normal wear and tear, and customers don't have anymore options. I've experienced it first hand, remember the screen lifting/bubble on Samsung Note 5, I was one of the victim. They blamed me for moisture getting in to the phone when I swear I haven't dropped the phone in any liquid. That's why I didn't even want to risk washing the phone in soap and water even with the IP68 of Note 8. I don't want to give Samsung an excuse to blame me again.
I actually was having double thoughts if I would surrender my phone for replacement warranty. I believe it wasn't affecting the phone's performance, so I thought I should just suck it up and live with it. But no, call me nitpicky/demanding/hard to please, but I just had the phone for barely 2 days, and with a price tag of almost $1,000, I know we should fight for our rights and demand a quality product. From my research before getting the phone, the only issue I read was the screen "bleeding" on the sides. Maybe that's why I wasn't that too observant on the smudges when I was checking the phone before they release it to me.
I usually just lurk around forums, but I decided to make my account here to warn others that such issue exist. It's a beautiful and powerful phone I have to admit it, but buyers should we aware and check carefully before spending their hard earned money.

I do not believe you can wear off the coating so easily. Heavy gamer here. Switched to the Note 8 recently but gamed hard on the S8+ as well for months before switching. This includes games that required swiping constantly. The screen on that S8+ is still pristine.

hey i have the same problem.. i cant remove the smudge. im a pubg mobile player and my screen where i put my thumb have smudges what did you do?

Returned mine
Best thing is to use a non-alcoholic wet wipe and clean the screen then use a clean microfiber cloth.
Samsung S9 Plus Fingerprint Smudge
I am using Smasung S9 Plus and I don't know what is the proper name for it but i am facing same issue.
Temp Solution : It gives you temp solution by using Touch Screen Wipes and Dry Cotton clothes .
but after one or two days it comes again so i am waiting for permanent solution.
Same problem here and I'm not a gamer.... I bought a cheap screen protector a not so good solution.. I think it's a quality control issue on some screens
