So tired of this Gorilla glass bull**** - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
This isnt a specific Nexus 6 problem, more of a gorilla glass issue in general. Im picky with my phones and handle them with great care to avoid scratches and such. Still I have managed to get a big visible scratch in my 2 month old Nexus 6. Im so tired of this gorilla glass bull****. It is supposed to be so durable and scratch resistant, still the phone get scratches by only looking at it. Gorilla glass is nothing more than a gimmick. Wish the phone manufacturers could abandon this and go for something that actually is scratch resistant.
Br J

Gorilla glass isn't scratch resistant. Sure its strong against bigger items like knife blades or scissors but you cannot protect it against small grains such as sand, dust or whatever. If you thought this, then you've been mistaken.

why don't you have a screen protector on it. If you are as picky as I am about mine. I have always used one. Fine particles will scratch almost anything

I think screenprotectors and cases take away to much from the original feeling of the phone. I guess Im just disappointed in how easily it scratches. Have been so careful with this phone and still it got this 5cm scratch. Its very shallow but noticable in daylight.

Tempered glass screen protector then? Verizon sells one that I can't even tell is on my phone. Works perfect.

anyways, rule of nature, anything harder than glass can scratch glass. doesnt matter what kind of glas it is.

My question is why don't more manufacturers use sapphire glass?

I guess if the could only design a case and screen protector that feels just like the phone that would be awesome.

I would definitely be willing to pay for sapphire glass if I didn't need a screen protector

saphire screens might be harder against microscratches, but on a phone they would prove yo be more brittle http://www.cnet.com/news/sapphire-phone-screens-not-as-strong-as-you-think-says-corning/

I've got a Kyocera Brigadier in my phone stable that has a Sapphire screen, pretty cool, you can't scratch it. The Cnet article cracks me up. It's Corning bad mouthing their competition, it's like Ford saying Chevy is bad. and visa versa. Of course they are going to say a competitive product is bad.

they make Sapphire glass products as well btw, just not for mobile devices.

HTC Hero didn't even have glass. It was plastic. Cost me £12 to replace that and the digitiser

From everything I've read, sapphire glass is indeed more brittle than gorilla glass.

I have had a O2X for a month. Actually, O2X's screen looks like a Gorilla Glass but I haven't really believed. Is it true?
And this applies to all O2X phones?
Well I guess I can rip of the "screen protector" that came preinstalled on the phone now!
Actually I would like to have confimed that the P990 has it and not just the Korean version!!! We'll probably never get that though...
for all of you that need proff, head over to this youtube video to see a daring owner put it to the test

That was obviously the P990 model in the video.
Now I'm happy, I can let my O2X go totally commando in confidence.
ok that's indeed painfull to watch haha. i personally wouldnt remove the preapplied screenprotector. But it's nice to know the phone can handle some abuse.
screen protector just ripped of and gained a lot of confidence!
You do realise metal cannot scratch minerals(Glass)
Use some minerals and enjoy the scratches
Screen protectors are useless
Gorilla glass is a marketing trick
Using an old N82 now
Impervious to a razorblade
A tiny bit of sand
GG scratches
Always will be the same

Harder materials will scratch softer materials.
Basically:
Sand > Gorilla Glass > Metal > 'Standard' Glass
So if you take the 2X with you to a beach it may become scratched.

Gorilla glass.

Does the bionic really have gorilla glass?
We shouldn't need a screen protector if that's the case. What's peoples opinions?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
My opinion is this:
I don't care if it has super mega indestructable ultra mega king kong glass, my 600 dollar smartphone will have a screen protector.
My fiance's iPhone4 has Gorilla Glass and it's scratched up..
My Tbolt also has Gorilla Glass and I somehow managed to put a quarter inch scratch in the screen.
Gorilla Glass, sure, might be a little more durable than plastic/cheap glass.. But you should still protect your screen, it's not invulnerable to scratches.
If Verizon can charge you for something, they will.
I've never put a screen protector on and I'm on my fourth gorilla glass screen. Haven't had a scratch yet, but I've never dropped a smart phone either. If you're a dropper, I'd put a case and a protector on it, maybe an Otterbox Defender.
Thanks. I guess I'm not sure if this anti glare screen protector I'm using is causing the screen to look so fuzzy. My thunderbolt looked better.

Tbolts actually do have Gorilla Glass.
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/htc
However, I know from repairing many, many phones that while they may be resistant to scratches (ie throwing your phone in your pocket with your keys), they are NOT resistant to falls where your screen will receive an impact from greater than a couple of feet or more. In fact if you drop your gorilla glass phone on either the top or the bottom (ie not back or not screen), I have seen enough evidence to say that it is MORE likely to CRACK your screen than cheap plastics of old.
As always, it's a trade-off. Simple solution--take care of $600+ devices.
I've definitely already managed to obtain a very light small scratch in the center of the screen. That won't change my opinion of needing a screen protector however. Girls that constantly throw their phones in their damn purses full of keys and such, sure. But if you store your phone in an unoccupied pocket I don't really see the point.

Nice one, pulling the trigger without doing your research. But someone schooled you anyways.
Staying on topic, I picked up the screen protectors that VZW is offering and it doesn't add any bad side-effects you see with a lot of other brands. They are just plain clear I guess and work well.

I have Ghost Armor on my Droid 3. Can't stand to have a scratch on my screen. I paid 200 for the phone and I definitely wanna protect it. And on the Bionic, if you push on the screen, it distorts, while other GG phone don't, making me think the glass is very thin. So why risk it?
And anyone that's looking at screen protectors, I recommend ghost armor. It doesn't grip your finger like the invisible shield(it's very smooth), and it is completely clear and doesn't dirty whites.
Anyone know when Ghost Armor might have a kit for the Bionic?

Actually if I am correct the Iphone 4 doesn't have real Gorilla Glass... Either that or it just sucks on the Iphone 4. I broke the glass on my old Iphone easily while Droid,Droid x and even my bionic have suffered drops no other phone would survive... My Bionic took a long plunge on top of my metal hdd enclosure's edge... I was scared for a moment cause I saw two huge dents... They were in the screen protector screen was still like new.

Nice. Makes me second guess my decision to remove my anti-glare one that the verizon rep at the store put on for me.
My droid 2 was dropped under my car and skidded face down over rough pavement. It's been dropped on concrete. Never a scratch, crack or any functional problems. Same with my old LG Voyager. That said I'm going to get a defender for the bionic mostly for the holster but also because there's a baby on the way.

Don't know, but if you buy it now, they'll custom cut one for now and call you when they get the real ones in and put it on then. For my D3, they got the rounded corners and everything with the custom cut.

AndoridPolice on the Glass N4

From the latest review by Androidpolice.com: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/07/google-nexus-4-review-the-beautifully-crafted-premium-flagship-phone-that-android-deserves/
"Since this whole smartphone thing started, every phone has had a glass front - a glass front that is easily breakable. So unless you are clamoring for a plastic touchscreen, I don't see how you can say it's ok for the front to be glass, but not the back."
Preach on, brother :highfive:
I don't mind the glass back as long as it's not the cause of the phone overheating. I live in Arizona and hopefully I can use this phone in the summer and not have it melt in my hands.

That doesn't make a lot of sense. Having a glass back and front makes it much more likely for even the front to shatter. The reason being glass has no give. So any shock can only be absorbed by the glass. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting the phone. But a glass back is always a concern.

No. I believe it is chemically strengthened glass. To be exact, it is: alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass. But not plastic. If you take a bunch of smart people and add a bunch of money, you get cool stuff like Gorilla Glass.

I think I liked what the comment was going for. The front has been glass and has been prone to breakage so adding it to the back shouldn't be that big of a deal. And since I found out the iPhone had it, that makes me less worried. If my wife hasn't broke her iPhone yet, then it must be indestructible.
This is best review I saw. Good job and can't wait to get this phone

I can't tell if you are trying to be funny but the iPhone 4/4S are well known for the glass shattering real easy. With the metal band connecting the glass, neither side of glass has any give so it takes little to shatter it.

Wow great review by them. I'd say that theirs is the most in depth review I've read yet. I wasn't considering the phone before (as I am happy with my GNex) but now I am starting to want it.
Really like this review and just confirms my need for this bad boy N4!
i LOVE the patterned back, but i wouldn't have went with a glass back. it's fragile and adding it on the back side makes the phone even more vulnerable to shatter. it's a relieve to know that it's made out of Gorilla Glass 2. i had a phone with Gorilla Glass for 2 years without a scratch.
that said, i will be putting a bumper case onto mine.

Considering Glass is a pretty good thermal conductor, and plastic is effectively an insulator, I doubt that would have anything to do with it.
"The screen on time for both battery charts was 2 hours and 40ish minutes."
Ugh...that's horrible...
Gorrila glass is not so power as ads. still be crashed.
I've never had shattering issues on any phone... if any, I'm more concerned about scratches, which I guess makes the glass back good news.

In my opinion (which seems to differ greatly from many others on this board) I want to show off the beautiful glass back. What is the point of keeping it scratch free and uncracked if you are just going to keep it hidden in a case for nobody to see, anyway? This phone cost $350, I highly doubt there is going to be a huge resale value for it when it comes time for me to replace it with the Nexus 5 (or whatever they call it). I will use screen protectors for the front and back and call it a day. I figure I will buy a nice black TPU case after I break the back (if I ever break it, that is) to hide the cracks, but until then, leave it naked for the world to see.

After being accustomed to having my plastic Nexus S naked the whole time (and it taking a few big falls without a mark) I was so uneasy handing the N4 at first - it felt so fragile and hard to hold. Fortunately I received the bumper the next day, and this has made a world of difference. I no longer feel on edge every time I pick it up - I still think my naked Nexus S is more durable, but at least the bumper let's you still enjoy the N4's superior build.

@OP,
You're holding it wrong.
Like someone else said, I suggest a screen protector with a silicon backing. They are the best.
Silicon backed protectors leave no residue and the silicon will fill in scratches and make them invisible while the protector is on. Protectors that stick using static cling will not cover scratches, and other protectors that require water to apply are more trouble than they are worth, in my opinion.
I recommend these, when it comes back in stock that is:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AEU4OEE/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00
I have used their protectors on many different phones and I am always extremely pleased with the results. Unlike most non-body armor screen protectors, these come with protectors for both the front and back.
I'm not a case person. I tend to take care of my phones. I'd recommend front and back protectors, the Nexus 4 bumper, just cause it adds a little more protection and grip, without taking away from the looks of the phone, and just be as careful as you possibly can. I don't care what phone you are talking about. If you drop it right (or wrong rather) it will break.
Good luck.
Yes screen protector is a no brainer, glass can scratch even gorilla glass, not too bothered though although I have a case on order for it as my phone gets slung in a pack with a big bunch of keys and other stuff, it would look like a pile of pants in no time if I had no case.
Front and back glass looks like sex but is a little vulnerable

Its all your fault for being careless, accident is being careless. I've owned several smartphones and none gotten a scratch because first thing you do is have screen protector installed by professional or you. Second, have a dedicated pocket for your phone and nothing else go to that pocket except your phone. Third, body armor like a tpu gel case or hybrid case, I prefer hybrid for max protection. Fourth and last, be responsible and never blame a product because of your stupidity.
By the way, Gorilla Glass will get scratched. It is not 100% scratch proof.

Hold on there a second. Are we talking about the same camera lens covers? Like DSLR lens covers? You know, plastic round thingies? Those can never scratch a glass, never mind the Gorilla Glass. I mean "technically" if you find a spot of the lens cover that is sharp (I have Nikons and they don't have sharp edges for instance, cause that'd be stupid, you cover the lens of a 1000$ barrel. No sane person would made them SHARP) and push it really hard towards normal glass, I guess you can make micro scratches. But you do that to Gorilla Glass, no way. Plastic is way softer than Gorilla. What you are saying doesn't make sense. Either you had the scratches prior to the instance or you had other stuff in your pocket, like sand.

I went in a scrawny teen but made it because my dad was tougher compared to the drill instructors, this helped me a lot. Physical part is do you best and always give more than what you think you can. And listen and understand the commands, this will help you not to be singled out, Drill instructors tend to look for **** birds.
Good luck, have fun, and be prepared to an adventure of a lifetime.
I know you were asking him, but I removed the one off my phone because a grain of sand somehow got underneath the film and continuously slid around in a little circle. Miraculously didn't scratch.
Also, as a military child that has suffered through 3 deployments, thank you for your service on this fine Memorial Day!

Duh ,... obviously ! ,. lol. Those can never scratch a glass? Think again. I have the Nikon camera lens cover,.. I put in my pocket together with my phone and it did leave a scratch! I thought Gorrila glass are tough...or Maybe LG or Google is using other glass just to make this phone more affordable.! I don't make sense? It's either you'RE close minded or just full of your self! LOL,...What are you a fortune teller? telling me i have scratches prior to the situation? lol.
The screen got scratch pretty easily by the camera lens cover and btw it's not sharp. End of story. I hope they will investigate Google and LG about this. Awful build quality experience.

I thought Gorilla glass are though as they advertised! How come a simple round edge camera lens cover scratched my N4 screen pretty easily. I bet they're using other glass just to make this phone at low price range. I feel awful. :/

Define scratch like youre super ocd and put the phone up against light to see the mini scratches? All phone scratch you cant see the scratch marks until you put it against a light. If you cant see the scratch without putting it next to a light then its fine chill..

I have a good eye sight! And the thin hairline scratch irritates me. I just feel awful,.. I was really careful cuz I used to love this phone,..but accidents happen ,...cuz i used to believed that the screen is though. So withouth second thought i put the camera lens cover. And then ... :{ . Does FCC reviews for quality control too?Cuz LG should be questioned. I mean the maker of this glass.

Then Why are they advertising it's scratch resistant? So does it mean ...all of their claims are false? They should be investigated. Yah it's my fault for trusting that N4 screen is tough.,.gawd,!

The phone's not invincible now is it? Don't expect it to be and it will scratch/break if you let it.

Scratch resistant not scratch immune.
Happens to all Gorilla Glasses.
But there are always careless users that manage to scratch it.
Gorilla Glass 3 is said to be more resistant.
The Glass is by Corning, not LG.

I've been using this phone for 4 months now naked; without screen protectors or case and not a single scratch here. Front or back. Just avoid dust or sand. Putting it on a very dirty pocket may cause the scratch so better wash those before using it.

I was gonna change it because mine was getting scratched up but I fell in love with the bare glass.
I signed a 13xx contract so I am hoping I get 1371 Combat Engineer. The physical part won't be a problem for me, I'm in pretty good shape for the most part. 18 pullups, 105 crunches, and I can probably do the 3 miles in 21min if I really push myself. I'm in my last year of JROTC and it has helped me out, even got me contract PFC. Drill shouldn't be a problem but no matter what, bootcamp is gonna suck. Haha. Thanky you and thank you for your service.
If you'revtalking about the front you obviously are insane and the back isn't gorilla so no surprise if that scratches
