Hi...
So I rooted my Note 4 and installed custom recovery TWRP. Before I did, I postponed an update (OTA) for the phone to 1 AM PST.
After rooting...the Notifications still show
"T-mobile Update Service" with that rectangular icon... and underneath says "Update Postponed"
Now...I thought installing TWRP should BLOCK OTA automatically...is something going ot go horribly wrong at 1 AM PST and will it try to install Lollipop on my Note 4 anyways?

I am on the NJ7 and can confirm any update check comes back with the "custom software, no updates for you" message.
Does it apply to ANK4? Unlike that poster - update check works for me...and it works a little too good and provides what is in each log.
Maybe it's because you rooted in a funny way?
Are you saying that rooting via the SuperSU UPDATE .zip and recovery is "funny?" I don't understand what's so funny about it. It's another method that isn't revolved around some auto-flash option.

What does CFAuto Root do differently that "blocks" OTAs? Just wondering what logical reasoning this is based on
I flashed TWRP with Odin - then I used UPDATE SUPERSU v2.6 .zip and installed via recovery. That was it. Launched SuperSU and it worked.
It looks more like you rooted the phone.
Custom binary, etc.
Are you sure you're rooted?
You can use rooted apps, etc.?
Did you trip Knox?

Yes. I am rooted. Is the method I did archaic or something? lol. I have SuperSU. I granted several apps root access - I have TWRP installed -and I used RootChecker and granted it access and it confirmed I have root as well.
Tripped knox...more than likely..not sure how to check
I rooted AFTER I got update notifications of TWO updates...perhaps a fluke?

You could probably kill the update process with titanium.
I'm just glad I'm finally getting some answers. I've been rooting across very different types of phones for a while, but each new release has its own weird...little grouped up programs and auto stuff. I tend to avoid all auto-solutions and opt for manual as possible.
what do you think about my deal with OTA? I didn't actually check for updates...its the same updates before root that are being notified to me

I've never run stock rooted for more than a day.
But, I know people stop the update nagging thing.
I uninstalled fotaclient.apk (one of the update's names) - along with the other update (incsyncmdl or something) and lastly FWUpgrade.apk.
I backed up Incsync and FWUpgrade..but not fotaclient. Say for purposes - i actually want to update or restore that...how would I find FOTAClient.apk again?
I guess it's no biggy..just breaks the in-phone updater...but still allows me to flash like normal unrooted stock roms in the future via Odin anyways
How are you uninstalling?
With titanium you can just freeze and then unthaw later.
But, you can always pull the apks out of one of the stockish roms in the Android development section.
I don't see the .apks in the Stock ANK4 rom. just recovery.img, boot.img and some unopenable .bin files...

So, I got my Moto X on Verizon today. The OTA started downloading already. Luckily, I turned off all data before it could finish downloading (it's at 8% now). Obviously, I can't connect to data 'cause it will automatically start to download.
I want to root though. I know I'm supposed to use PwnMyMoto. However, I know that the OTA breaks root. I've read around all the posts--and I can't seem to find a conclusive way to keep root on the OTA after gaining it; each post I read says something different.
Additional piece of info: I don't care about anything regarding custom ROMs or the bootloader. I intend to keep the stock ROM, but use Xposed.
So, my three questions:
1) Is it okay to root even though the download of the OTA has started?
2) What is the conclusive way to keep root for the OTA?
3) After rooting, how would I go about returning everything back to stock? (I plan on using this phone for a next week or so, then returning it--this is because of the price drops and MotoMaker for Verizon coming out soon; at this stage, I just want to know if this phone is right for me).

Just boot into Recovery and wipe data\cache and dalvick this will reset your phone. Then resetup your phone, the OTA will come back up, tell the OTA to REMIND you about it, not download it. Then use pwnmymoto to get root, and then just freeze the OTA downloader (MotorolaOTA.apk). Continue to use your phone, customize it with xposed etc etc. When you want to return it, use RSDLite and flash the stock FXZ file to it its totally back to stock again out of the box.

No need to wipe data. You can root while the download goes then install ROM toolbox and delete the update from your cache and freeze the moto updater.apk and updater.apk to stop the notification. As for.rooting the update I think jcase said install pwnmymoto but don't run it then update. But IMO its not worth it cause if anything gets messed up you get updated and loose the opportunity to root.

If you installed the update your SOL. If its just downloaded your OK to root.
I ended up not accepting the update. I'm not going to either. If by the time I return this phone I deem it worthy of a replacement for my GNexus--then I'll worry about root and the OTA. This is awesome stuff.

Had a feeling oh well missed the boat again.
Got my note 3 last night, came from HTC One M7. As with everything I went straight to root and rom install, maybe too hastily. Should have read instructions better.
Phone is on 4.3. Last night I was on Baseband version N900AUCBMJ5...I had it rooted and safestrap installed with no issue. Hadn't installed a rom yet, was going to do that today.
This morning, after my alarm woke me up, my phone rebooted and said was updating Android...NOW the phone is on baseband version N900AUCUBNB4, not rooted, and completely stock.
SuperSU is still installed, but doesn't work. SafeStrap is installed but it says Stats: Not Rooted.
When I reboot it still has the padlock that says "Custom" at the bottom of the boot screen.
What did I did to my phone?! How do I fix it? Is there a way to go back to MJ5 or should I? Where do I root from here and how do I install 4.4 and a custom rom?
You got the "pre kit Kat" update. You can obtain root again by using an older version of kingo. Check out the thread on how to root nb4. Once you have root access again freeze "at&t software update" so you won't automatically update again. If you update to stock kit Kat you won't be able to gain root access at this time.

How do I freeze the AT&T software update?
So after I reroot the phone and install the SafeStrap recovery, I can boot into that recovery. Then create a new rom slot and install a new rom correct? Like PureROM CE (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716737) and I should be good to go correct?
Why does it say it's not rooted but yet the padlock is still there?
There's apps you can download to freeze like titanium backup, android tuner...etc. Some cost money, some don't. The free ones aren't the best but somewhat work. I highly recommend titanium backup.

You see the padlock symbol because the rom isn't fully stock. It's customized. The update removed your root access but not fully. Traces of superuser were left behind. You must of previously used triangle away, or an xposed module to "fake system status". Once root was removed these apps no longer work so your padlock is back.

Don't feel like an idiot. It's like you said. The at&t note 3 is a different animal. At&t has locked our bootloader and totally locked us out from modifying our device. It seems like at&t comes out with a new "you're screwed" surprise for us every update. This will be the last branded phone I buy from at&t. Boycotting is the only power we have over them.

Have my dev ed xt1060 rooted and running 4.4.2 stock rom with xposed
This morning when I turned on the phone it downloaded the OTA update which I am assuming is kk, 4.4.4
The update has not been applied yet as I don't want to lose root... I had a bad experience with Samsung and the whole Knox bs and that is why I moved over to the MOTO X dev ed.
If I do update the phone, will I lose root? Will it be hard to get root back??
Is there a way to save the update for later if I want to do that??
Just don't want to get screwed again like I did with knox.... once bitten twice shy, right?

You need to be on stock recovery and system changes undone as well. In other words Xposed needs to be uninstalled and other changes undone. All original system apps need to be there... Etc. If you've done much to the phone, it's best to flash stock 4.4.2 again, take the Ota and yes...flash custom recovery and root again.
Or.... Wait for flashable files for your model and flash in fastboot. Done.
Personally, I always wait and flash the files with fastboot.

I've got this icon on the upper left of my screen to start the system update... Is there a way to remove that without updating yet??

You can get temp root with kingroot, but it's very temp. There is no other free alternative and if you upgrade to lollipop, then you can't root unless you follow the mofo thread and don't upgrade the boot loader. I personally updated to 5.1 without rooting and have no regrets. Mofo is awesome and props to the dev, but I'm too lazy to build a system image every time I want to implement something. Though, computerfreak seems to be making some awesome images. If you gotta have root, use mofo but it will cost. I personally don't need root in this device and it run ANAZINGLY on 5.1.
So if I upgrade using computer freak image/method then I will have root and can keep it right, or have to go with mofo,a bit confused

CM ain't gonna happen man, unfortunately. You will have to buy mofo, which is a system flashing utility from my understanding. You can then use computerfreaks pre rooted (with other goodies baked in) image and have functioning root permanently. Mofo doesn't allow you to write to the system, so you essentially have to flash an image with root built in, but you can't just download and use root apps like with traditional root, they must be made into a system image. It's kinda complicated and very limited but it's all we got. It's not traditional root at all. Just my opinion, but we aren't going to ever get boot loader unlock and I believe this is as good as it's getting with this device. I'm on a Crapple IPad at the moment and it's locking up but as soon as I'm at a computer I'll post some links. If you upgrade the boot loader to 5.1. You will be stuck without root so I will link the thread with the instructions.

SO how do i update the root that was just released.

He's new to rooting. He likely means something else. Maybe update the OS.
Once you have root, there is no need to update it. As long as your root didn't get removed by an amazon OS update.
Do you know if your friend blocked "OTA" (forced amazon OS updates)? What OS version are you on?

Unless you know that an "update" actually has something you want & you're sure it won't remove your root / lock you out, then do not update.

i am not sure if the ota are off or not
edit: i found in the developer options for cyanogenmod updates, and i turned that on. i dont know what to do from there

hang on you are running cyanogenmod rather than stock rom?
That won't ota update think you'd need to get the files from the CM thread and install how they say there.
