Screen touch sensor dead spot - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up a N920I in Australia 2 days ago and started noticing that when typing it was very hard to type on the top row of keys. I would often get double presses (tt) or 2 different keys would be pressed (tg).
Often times when scrolling it would also seem like I clicked when my finger didn't leave the screen, which resulted in opening things I didn't intend to like ads, etc.
So I did a sensor test using *#0*# and found there is an area on the screen that is dead or senses very irratically.
Spen works fine and it only is the touch sensor.
Is this a hardware issue and should I exchange the unit, or is this a software bug.?
I'm on DVU1AOH2, updated last night.

What case are you using?

I tested both with and without a case. Doesn't make a difference.

Update: I've gone ahead and changed the unit. The new one doesnt have this issue so probably just got a bad unit.

Touchscreen issues are AWFUL

I love the n7...mostly. I want it to succeed
But the issues where the touchscreen will have dead zones / drop touch / not work properly are killing me!
Is this driving anyone else nuts? I have had two different ones, and they both have the problem.
I'm hopeful that either this will be a software fix, or that there will be a later hardware revision that I can rma for.
But man, this is a big problem!
Edit.....
Here is a post on the problem

ok, return and get a new one or demand a refund. I doubt no one here thought defects in a product were awesome, contact customer service
Are you not having these issues? I have had them on two different devices... Reports are starting to show up on the blogs.... I figured this was a device wide problem.

Im not having any issues either, but i havent played any tegra 3 specific games on it yet.
It only seems to happen sometimes... Particularly bad after playing intense games (dead trigger, e.g.).
Seems worse on the right side for me.
I in fact only took delivery of the 2nd one in the hopes that it wouldn't have the problem.

No issues here, played a few games and not a prob
Never seen any touch issues myself.
I had the issue this morning after powering up with the charger attached. The right hand side of the keyboard was very unresponsive. I was concerned the rooting I performed last night was contributing to the problem.
After powering off again it seemed to reset and has been working fine the rest of the day.
While it was unresponsive I downloaded a touch test app and it was struggling to see presses over 1/4 of the screen primarily the bottom right when in portrait orientation.
Thankfully it seems to be OK at present.

How to use the finger scanner with one hand

Give this round to Apple, tap to unlock is a better way than tap and swype as far as fingerprint unlocking goes. However with a little learning curve Samsung's method isn't that more complicated. As a matter of fact and contrary to reports, you can unlock it with just one hand.
The key is to understand that the scanner is built in the home button, and the reason you swype from the screen down is that your full fingertip goes through the home button in a straight vertical line. The key is exactly that: straight vertical line though the middle of the home button, and with practice you can set up your thumb too, in a horizontal way for one-hand unlock.
Just be patient while you figure out how Samsung likes the input, straight down from screen through the middle of the home button, once you get used to it and successfully put the 10 steps in, unlocking should work with the thumb too. Can't guarantee every time, but there is a speed and angle where it works just fine, straight, through the middle in about 1,5 seconds. More to come when I write my mainly camera focused review, thx to the XXLGSM guys for the test unit.
Register your thumb print during the configuration by using different angles of your print and it will greatly improve accuracy.
I would have preferred touching the home button like the iPhone instead of swiping. But we all know no way in hell Samsung can afford to implement the same thing as Apple now and get away.
Overall works decently, prefer to have an option like this and keep my device more secure with a strong alternate password to back the fingerprint. Even if it works 75% of the time I'm OK.
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
Mine works perfectly I registered 3 fingerprints 2 for each hand for one hand operations it works 95 % of the time
Well considering the fact that Apple bought the company that created the fingerprint sensor for the iPhone 5S, Samsung didn't have any other choice than to go with a swipe sensor. They made the best of what they could get and it works fine for the most part.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
I think the problem most people are having is that they're swiping too fast. The speed shown in the video is perfect. That's the way I've been doing it and have had just about a 100% success rate.
Slow and steady wins the race :good:
I've registered mine on the kind of edge of the thumb that I would use for one handed use and that seems to work quite well
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I figured this out yesterday and sent a video to some buddies as well...
the trick is that you have to go down vertically on the home button....so you just register it in the same angle your thumb would be with a one hand unlock...
it's all about the swiping motion vector...not the angle your finger is in
I also figured out that if you register one finger more than once, it helps w/the chances of getting it unlocked on the first try. I registered my thumb twice and that seems to have helped. If you don't mind using two of the slots for one finger I would go that route. Hopefully some devs can figure out a way to register more than three.
One handed use using either thumb to unlock works perfectly here. My initial problem was not scanning enough of it when unlocking ?
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Glad we got rid of the silly "no one handed unlock" propaganda. You can basically push home button as you pull the S5 out of your pocket and finger unlock it by the time you move it in front of your face. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked after putting in multi-angle inputs, of about 100 tries I only failed like 15 times, maybe 5 in the last 50.
Thank you for the encouraging post. I just set mine up again and I'm having more success now with one hand. Just held it in one hand while I did it and now it works. Good tips.

Thanks for the usefull tip..
Many people were doing...Much ado about nothing
I think how well one handed operation works depends on the size of your fingers/thumbs. I have small hands so my thumb isn't very wide, so when I try to swipe my thumb down one handed it always tells me I haven't swiped enough of my thumb because it isn't wide enough.
after having the phone for nearly a week i have mastered unlocking it with one hand swipe straight down with a bit of presure and i would say it works 9 times out of 10
I was able to register my thumb sideways and now the finger print sensor works pretty much every single time one handed. I'm actually quite pleased with it even after owning an iPhone 5s

[FIX - NO REPLACE] Nexus 4 Power Button

FOA: Sorry for the bad english in the thread and in the video, i'm italian, so everything will sounds alot like a "mammamiapastamafia" thread. Good thing that i put the subtitles in the video! :3
Hey guys! As you should know the Nexus 4 is affected by various problems...one of the most annoying surely is the "hard to press" power button. Well no fear my friends! This tutorial will show you how to fix the problem!
------------
READ CAREFULLY
- I don't take any responsability with this. This fix require you to open your Nexus 4. Don't try it if you don't know very well where you're putting your hands.
- This fix doesn't replace any component, it just will fix the button.
------------
FIX STEP BY STEP
1) Shutdown the phone
2) Remove the backcover (use one of the guides you can find on Youtube)
3) Boot on the phone
4) Pick a plastic piece, work on it to obtain a smaller piece to put under the power button of the backcover
5) For every piece try different position if it don't work and then reinsert the backcover to test the key
6) Profit!
-------------
Questions/Answers
Q: Will it last as a fix?
A: I used the fix like a month ago, no problem until now.
Q: Can I use it on other phones?
A: Yes, I guess. If your phone uses the same system to power on the screen there shouldn't be any problem.
Q: What about using the glue to apply the fix?
A: Do it at your own risk. I prefer not to risk.
Q: Can I use another material (paper, iron...)
A: I don't know. I wouldn't use iron or other metals, cause it can conduct the voltage and cause issues to the phone. Also the paper doesn't work.
Qo it work also for the volume keys?
A:Yes, i think. Cause the volume buttons of the N4 works the same way as the power one.

So ingenios. Thank you!
I had this issue too, my power button started to fail in december, 2013... and I did something like this, but I used a small piece of paper (post-it, actually :laugh and worked like a charm until 2-3 weeks ago. I'll probably open my N4 again to replace my workaround, it's starting to fail again.
Plus: to save some pressings on power button, I've installed a Xposed Module (GravityBox) that allows me to use volume buttons to wake up the screen as well, each time I press one of the buttons

Yeah paper could work but it's easier to "ruin" or "corrode", expecially if you think that the Nexus 4 often heat a bit too much. Moreover the paper piece can't be blocked like the plastic piece by the backcover and it could fall inside the phone and ruin something!
Also here's a photo of the original plastic piece I used. Then i've colored in red the plastic piece that I effectively have under the backcover, so you can better see the dimensions..

Sometimes my power button does not work, so I have to press it a second time. The other strange thing is that when I press it to lock the screen (and turn it off), it locks the screen but also turn the screen on showing the lock screen. So will this fix solve my problem? It's really annoying... this nexus is really cheap D:
If you encounter a lock-relock issue maybe u have a different problem, the key press like two times. Yes, i think it could resolve it

Yeah it's really annoying and it happens on a lot of ROMS and kernels. When I take the phone to unlock it, the touchscreen does not work and I have to restart it holding down the power button (not too easy because mine, as I said, does not work well) D:
P.S: right now I'm using a Note 2... great replacement xD

If u can try this fix and you know where you're putting your hands i recommend you trying it. For a long time i've been using also s2w and s2s or double tap to wake. During the last period I also "cheated" on the TouchControl settings so that I can use a "Touch to wake" that for me was really useful but the matter with this functions is that alot of times i have switched on the phone just by keeping it in my hand and this was very annoying.

Yeah I know that feel, currently i'm waiting for a OnePlus One, my girlfriend has one and she have the exact same problem, because of the Double-tap-to-wake feature..
Great trick.
I have fixed my mushy power and volume buttons using small pieces of gaffer tape, cut with an scalpel, and pasted on the internal button.
Seems more easier to work the correct size, and thanks to the gaffer, it sticks in place, but can still be removed without leaving glue.
The response is better than when my N4 was new.
Thanks for the tip !

When the screen gets unresponsive you can easily just tap the upper left corner at it'll respond.

reboot, itll work again if it just happened to stop.
I've rebooted twice
I assume you checked that rotation is enabled via either settings menu or notification quick setting panel?
My n7 did that one time and I gave it a gentle drop flat on a table and it started working. Never had the problem again. Just enough to jar the sensor a bit and "unstick it". If that's even possible. It worked though.

You can use Ultimate Rotation Control and force auto rotation for both launcher and lockscreen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate
mine is not working eaither it was doing just fine out of the box but now its gone and I think it is affecting my proximity sensor as well when I am ending a call the screen wont come back on after I take the phone away from my ear to get the screen back on to end the call
I dropped once and stop working.
With a few knock and working again, some mechanical part may get stuck.

This thing is awesome. Just remember to select "Force Rotate" twice, once in the app's General settings and once in the app's settings under "Special Cases, Lock Screen".

Hah! Came to this thread to share my experience. Sort of dropped my Nexus 6 head down and auto rotation stopped working. Panicked for a while, flashed all system images but to no avail.
Then I thought about dropping my Nexus 6 bottom down and it works now LOL. Damn the internals are fragile.
P.S. Dropped with a case on so no biggie.
This seriously works

Mine stopped working and I was about to re-flash a new ROM to see if that was the problem but I saw this thread too!
I previously dropped my phone from about 2 feet.
I dropped the phone about 4-5 inches face down (in a case) on my desk and that fixed it for me. Great to know it's that fragile
Installed the app suggested my auto rotate we all crazy upside down and sideways so I uninstalled the app and now all is well... Weird but it worked. Why I have no idea just works.

Stopped working after a drop (in a case). This solution worked perfectly for me. Had to drop it upright on the bottom edge onto a soft flat surface with a case from about 6 inches.
This happened to me last week, seemingly out of nowhere. I actually did drop my Nexus in it's case from a chair onto carpet. After reading this post I thought I'd try smacking the back of it but to no avail. I ended up dropping it again from the couch to carpet and after that it started working again! Strange but it works. Hope it helps someone with this issue.

After drop stoped working, but corrected after some hard punch
Awesome thread, mine stopped working after a pretty scary drop on the road side. After reading this thread I dropped mine on a carpet from about 8 inches. Nothing happened so dropped it again on its side and gave it a couple of firm slaps. Works now. Thanks all.
Same here drop in a case....stopped working. Gave some hard hits on the back to fix it.

Touch screen responsiveness "issue"?

From day one with this device, when I touch the screen to say launch an app from the drawer, I can be too quick or light about it. I've not had this issue with other devices, I am often tapping an option on the screen only to have to retap it for the phone to follow instructions. This doesn't seem to positive correlate with os version or rom or kernel.....so then assuming this isn't an issue specific to my device only....where does the issue lie and is it fixable?

If you happen to run stock rom without any kind of screen protectors on top the display and you still have these touch issues, i'm afraid it is a spesific issue with your device.
