Voicemail Problems on 6.0.1 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to change my voicemail number on my Nexus 6 I go to the phone app > settings > calls > voicemail > set voicemail number
When I enter the number for Fido (Canada), I get the pop-up saying that I can't change my voicemail number (currently blank). I can get voicemail to work if I set up the voicemail number as a contact, but I can't hold "1" to get straight to my voicemail and of course I am not getting notifications of when I do receive a voicemail.

I just tried on my n6, and I changed it with no problem.

Do you think it may be a SIM error? My SIM card is 3-4 years old now. I don't know what else to try.

you can try changing it, but mines 3+ years old as well. is the number there wrong? as I believe that number comes from your provider. anyways, I'm using the visual voicemail option in marshmallow, so I don't have to call out for voicemail.

I'm not sure what's the problem. I tried entering random numbers too and I got the same message as when I enter the correct one lol...

Voicemail Number? Is it my cell phone number? or is it a weird one?

Ok in my speed dial i have a Voicemail number.. its a weird number, like a 772 area code number, When i call it goes to my voicemail.. Why? whos number is this (772)??
my Telephone number is a (305) number..
I am comming from sprint and my voicemail number was MY cell phone number in order to get to my voicemail.
Do i edit my option and change the number to call my cell phone number (305)???
OR do i keep the (772) number?? I am confused...? Either number i call it goes into my voicemail...
Ok, get this, when I go into my phone Settings > Services > Voice Mail and Text Messages... The numbers there are weird.. the voicemail is that (772) and the Text messages Service center is a weird (312) number.. Why??
that's normal for most US carriers now. If you call that number from a landline youwill see it takes you into the vmail system so you can retrieve your messages from a landline. It's going to be a different number depending upon what area you are in. Mine is 619-204-0806 and I use the phon ein 760 area code. 619 is probably San Diego and I live in the Palm Springs area which is a few hours away.
Oh Ok, I got it.. ... So should I just change the number under phone Settings to MY cell number? or keep that weird 772 number??
What do you think???
Also, I set up a password to my Voicemail, But when i call my voicemail from my Cell phone it doesnt ask for it, When I call that Weird (772) number from a land phone, it does ask for it..
Is there a way to get a password from my cell phone too??
Thank you

leave the 772 number, it's correct.
when you call in via the cell phone will never ask you for a password, it assumes that it's safe to allow the caller into vmail because they are calling from the cell number associated with vmail box. If you call from a landline, then it prompts the caller for a password.
Now, if I rememebr right (I was just playing around with this a few weeks ago), on ATT you can setup the vmail box to prompt for password from the cellphone also. Youwould need to go thru the vmail account options and see if there is an option for this. If you are on ATT I believe it's possible.
From prior experience in working for that POS company with that general vmail number you get charged minutes. But if u put in your own number as the vmail number it counts as mobile to mobile. Have fun!

Phone rings twice and sends to voicemail.

The caller on the other end says it rings all the way through (5 rings and then to voicemail).
It has done this with several ROM's, the stock HTC cupcake, to JF 1.5, JACHero, and now I am on cyanogen's 3.62 ROM. The radio is 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I.
The phone will do this even with a clean wipe. No apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Check your call forwarding settings. Sometimes, they like to play with themselves and set it as "forward all calls to voicemail". These settings won't show it, because the changes are on the T-Mobile server, not your phone. Only having 2 rings sounds like it connects to the network and then gets pushed away from it, so most likely it's not a problem with your phone.
If you happen to have an old T-Mobile phone laying around, trying switching SIM cards and see if anything changes.
Figured it out. Ran a GSM code
*61*1[vm access number]*11*n#
n= seconds before forwarding. Set it to 25 and it rings all the way through.
Thanks for the info lukekirstein

Where would you run this code at? I want to be able to set my ring time longer so that it takes longer for it to forward to voicemail.

Open up your dialer and dial it like you would a phone number.
In my case I entered *61*18056377243*11*25# and dial. Runs the code and then in a few seconds it is done. But check to see if your voicemail number is different than mine.

Cool, was able to set the Voicemail to connect in 35 seconds. Thanks!
I get the error:
Call forwarding.
Connection problem or invalid MMI code.
I've carefully entered the code three times, always get the same reply.
I checked my voicemail number, and it's correct.
Any ideas?

What are you trying to do?
Trying to get my phone to wait 20-30 seconds before going to voicemail.
I get, maybe, 2 rings before people are transferred. If my finger isn't already on the button, chances are I can't answer the phone.
These are the codes I tried (as per the instructions above):
*61*18056377243*11*20# (for 20 secs) -and-
*61*18056377243*11*25# (not to go to voicemail)
18056377243 is my voicemail number.
Neither worked.

Are you on a flex pay account? Also, you should only need one 1 MMS number, because that's the immediate point it re-routes to voicemail.
re Flexpay, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure. The wife set all of this up before we were married and we've just continued it. I seem to recall a mention of something like that, but I could very well be wrong.
I'm assuming that this option wouldn't be available to FP customers. Would 611 be able to make a change to fix it? The 2 ring thing is seriously causing problems on this end.
TIA

Call forwarding is not available to flex pay customers and thus, custom MMS coding will not work. If this is the case, you should contact T-Mobile (either way, probably a good idea) and talk to them to see what might be causing the problem.
What ROM are you using? Some of the slower ROMS can create dialer lag.
Asked my wife. It is Flexpay. So that solves that.
Thank you so much for your reply.
That got us going in the right connection.
I am using Cyan's rom right now. But this was the way it was ever since we got into any 'Cupcake" versions (OTA or modded). My thoughts are the radio or a tower issue, but that's an uneducated guess. I rarely get phone calls anytime except when I'm home, so it's hard to pinpoint. So I followed your suggestion and tried to call 611 a short while ago. Got through to CS who walked me through some stuff (their basic scripted thing, all of which I've already tried), and it didn't work. So they tried to send me to tech support, and I guess it was either to late or they couldn't connect for whatever reason, so I have to call back in the morning.
Thanks again for heading me in the right direction.

Google Voice with AT&T Moto X?

Hi all, I'm currently on a GS3 with Verizon and Google Voice integration works well, I. E. Receive calls from GV number as well as using GV for voicemail and transcription (instead of Verizon voicemail).
Are there any gotchas or differences to be aware of in setting up GV with Moto X on AT&T? Or with any phone on AT&T for that matter?
Thanks!

Not really but I would just disable visual voicemail which is preinstalled. Other than that it's no different
No problem for me either. Indeed, you might want to disable/remove/uncheck all AT&T preloaded apps.
Oddly, I see to be having issues with getting Voice to work on my phone. It's not picking up at all as the default voicemail. I've tried uninstalling it and going through the setup again - and the phone still shows that Voice is the voicemail - but the phone will ring forever unless I manually reject the call. Anyone else experiencing this?

Do you have it properly forwarding the call to your google voice number? That needs to be edited in the phone settings.

Yeah, in the phone settings it lists google voice as the voicemail provider.
Just wanted to update - my issue was that when I swapped to this phone, AT&T forgot to enable voicemail to it. So now it's working again.

I had the same issue. I just got off the phone with customer service and they had to put the vm soc back on my account.
Wonder how many other people have the same issue and haven't realized it yet?

Google voice works just fine on my moto x also.
But after 2 years of using google voice; Im finally getting rid of it. Im tired of the MMS headaches. Tired of waiting for google to find a solution.
This may or may not help anyone. But Google voice on all my phones and my nexus 4 worked great for years. Recently my ATT accountgot hhacked and my entire account had to be re provisioned. This defaulted to the newer voicemail service and Googlevoice no longer can register. So instead iI just set all forwarding to my Google voice number and it functions the same way.
Supposedly getting ATT to put me back on the old style voicemail is a difficult task to convincethe reps to do. Take ffor what its worth. This is my nexus 4 too and Google voice just can't register as voicemail for some reason.

Nexus 6 Voicemail Problem

The voicemail on my nexus 6 (cw, 32gb, 6.0.1 with Feb patch, completely stock) doesn't appear to be working. I hold down the 1 key in the phone to access the voicemail, and it says to dial a number to leave a message, or to access a voicemail on the device by pressing star. I press star, and enter my my ten-digit number like it asks, but it says it is invalid. So I go to my voicemail setting and hit set-up. There's an unfamiliar number, and so I assume that is the number it wants. I enter that as well, but it says this one is invalid as well. I called my carrier (consumer cellular) to reset my voicemail, and they did so. This did not solve my problem. To be clear, I've had this problem since the day I got the phone. My other nexus 6, moto g 3rd gen, and moto g 1st gen all set up voicemail smoothly without any this, and I was hoping someone could help me out with this.
which carrier do you use? i ask this because the n6 does visual voicemail, but it doesnt work on all carriers. oh, and since you are running , your voicemail options probably changed as well. yes, cm does this sort of thing very often.
btw, by visual voicemail i mean that it doesnt have to call out to get your voicemails, they automatically appear in your phone(to listen to).

My carrier is Consumer Cellular, and I switched on Visual Voicemail in the settings, but nothing changed. And my nexus is running pure stock. It's not rooted or modded in any way.
I currently have Verizon and they charge extra for visual voicemail, so I am of no help there, but I usually just dial my own phone number and it takes me to the voicemail service.

Problems setting up Google Voice

This is the first time I am having an issue setting up Google Voice as my default voicemail. The last few phones I've used, an unlocked S8+ and most recently an AT&T locked Note 8 I have been offered the option to use GV as my voicemail when launching the GV app the first time, during the initial set-up I get a prompt. Now I have an unlocked Note 8 (US version purchased from Samsung) and I did not get the prompt. So I went to the GV setting on my pc and tried "activating" the voicemail by running the code for AT&T which is **004*1215839XXXX#, when I hit send I get the following error code (see attached). GV was deactivated on my previous Note 8, there is no additional setting under VOICEMAIL/SERVICE PROVIDER and I cannot change the call forwarding information, I get a error message "Failed to read data, unexpected response from network." I CAN change the actual number under VOICEMAIL SETTINGS but that doesn't seem to change anything. The number that was in there was the same as the Call Forward/Busy and unreachable which again I cannot change.
Any insight would be great, I did speak at length with AT&T which was fruitless, I would prefer not to punish myself with a call to Samsung.
Thanks in advance,
Quick update- I spoke with Samsung tech support and they had me try some of the same procedures I had already tried, rebooting phone, adding a comma or plus sign at the end of the string, etc. I also tried an alternative visual voicemail, You Mail and this also failed to run the MMI code. Samsung gave me a case number and want me to take the phone to a Best Buy to speak with one of their Samsung Experts, possibly for an exchange?? Maybe there is a hardware issue with the phone, seems unlikely but since no one else here seems to be having a problem it doesn't appear to be software.
I have the same issue. Please advise if you are able to resolve it.
I have Google Voice working on my Note 8 on T-Mobile, including all the conditional forwarding. BUT I had it all setup before I swapped the SIM card from my OnePlus 5 to the Note 8.
Maybe you could try to setup the conditional forwarding by putting the SIM card in another device?

I had another long conversation with Samsung support and I'll use support loosely, the nearest Best Buy with a Samsung expert was 2 hours away, and the woman was surprised when I laughed. While I've only had the phone for a week or so they will not exchange it but I can buy a new one and then send back mine or I can send in for repair...what a f'ing joke! I am curious if ANYONE with an unlocked US version can set up GV as the voicemail or an alternative like You mail. I can set up the AT&T visual voicemail and that's it. I'm beginning to think it's in the software of the US unlocked version.

Hi. I just switched to at&t. Despite the offer of GV to operate on my Note 8, it has never functioned. I've tried everything. I've used GV since it was first offered, and if I'd known the combo was a dud, I'd have kept t-mobile.
If you've figured it out, let me know. Doesn't seem to be a locked/unlocked issue as you thought.

I just bought a Note 8 on Monday, my google voice mail worked for 1 day I have messages in my google voice one day after I turned it on. Now it isn't working and I can't get it to. How can that be?
I have used GV for my VM since it came out as well.
The Note8 is the first phone I have had to configure manually for some reason. I have the Exynos from the UK and using on AT&T in the US.
Below are the steps I took and everything is working as expected. I only use the VM part of GV as I do not have a need to dial via GV so I do not know how to fix that part if it is not working on your phone.
1. Go to phone app and select 3 dots in top right.
2. Select settings.
3. Select More Settings.
4. Select Call forwarding.
5. Select Voice call.
6. Populate your GV number in place of the carrier's number or whatever number is there in the 3 fields. Should be in format like +15631234321. Might be good idea to note what number is there in case you have to go back.
Always forward should be turned off.
7. Go back to settings again and select Voicemail settings.
8. Populate your GV number in the Voicemail number field. Should be in format like 5631234321. This is probably not needed unless you dial your own VM to get messages, I think.

Sprint settings don't have that...I think ours mess up when we do a profile update...and we have to dial our forwarding setup again...ie.,*73googlevoicenumber or carrier version anyway...tedious yes...but only takes a second to do...I put in a bug request as welll...you all should do the same...take note of how often it happens and what triggers...like the profile update as I could be mistaken...wish we had a fix like above...

Hoping this helps... I realized the Google Voice voicemail functionality stopped working on my unlocked Pixel (on AT&T) a few months ago. After reinstalling the Voice app, I also no longer saw the option to use its voicemail as default. I also received errors when dialing the "activate" codes mentioned on the GV site.
I hopped on a chat with AT&T and said there seemed to be a known issue with GV vm no longer working with AT&T. We went through the following:
- verified correct IMEI on account (I switch phones often so the IMEI did need to be updated)
- restarted phone
- again tried the "activate" codes and voila--success
I made a test call and GV voicemail picked up instead of the carrier, I got a vm notification, and could see the vm in the GV app. When I asked the agent what they did, they said they enabled voicemail (I wonder if they meant call forwarding?) and that was all. I went into the phone app, and yes, under call forwarding, my GV # was now listed. :good:
I was able to fix a similar issue on my newly-activated Samsung Galaxy A51 on Verizon. Nothing seemed to be getting the google vm to work.
I found another thread that suggested going into Google Voicemail (Legacy Google Voicemail). That section provided a tab that was PHONES. On that screen was a google vm number and my cell phone number. I had to press the ACTIVATE voicemail button next to my cell phone number. That provided a unique code to type into the phone (*71 plus 10-digit number, which interestingly was NOT the google vm number listed above).
I thought the code may be wrong because it was not the number assigned to me, so I edited the code to by google vm number. Didn't work. Entered code again with 10-digit number as initially provided.
Next I went into Verizon's details for my phone and then into a CALL FORWARDING section. There was an option to forward ALL CALLS or BUSY and UNANSWERED. I selected the latter and put in the 10-digit phone number (again, not the number that was showing as my vm number, but the one generated in the activation) in the *code mentioned above.
All back to working order!
