Hi everybody. My first post . Ive been reading lots of threads for a couple of weeks. I decided to make an account to get some help with topics and also help others out where I can .
Im looking to buy myself a Google Nexus One. However theres a few things which im not sure on about the screen.
1. How badly do fingerprints show up? Is it really noticeable? I currently have an iphone 3gs which shows finger prints, but its not that bad and cant see them when the phone is on.
2. How "Good/Bad" is the Nexus One screen? By this I mean from videos I have watched on youtube the nexus one screen always looks darker and other screens look so much brighter and just more inviting. How noticeable is it?
Thanks for all the help. If my questions have been answered before (recently) please post the link of that thread
1. fingerprints showup given the screen doesn't have a oleophobic coating unlike the 3gs.
2. screens nice with great color contrast BUT you can't see it in the sunlight. light literally reflects off the screen.

It's not treated with an hydrophobic treatment, so not as good as iphone but I use a screen protector and I do not care about prints.

huh? It's an OLED screen! it's gorgeous but need to be full power outside to be visible

Newer Nexus one will have SLCD, I have no idea how they compare...
Welcome to XDA! I find the N1 screen as good as or better than most others with the same size.
I have a iPhone 3G and fingerprints and brightness have always seemed the same with it and the N1. The 3GS has a coating to help with smears so it might beat the N1, but a screen protector could easily fix that.
Below is the real difference. That's the iPhone 3G on the left, which has the same display as the 3GS, and the Nexus One on the right. Photo was taken with both on 100% brightness on both, which is why the sky looks washed out.
The nexus screen is just fantastic in my opinion, the amoled colors just pop out more than any other screen I've seen. It's just beautiful
Screen looks fantastic, but the multitouch is messed up.

I got something here.
Compare the screen to an LCD TV.

it can only track 2 fingers, not 3 or more. and there is an axis crossing problem which does not effect anything unless you are a hardcore gamer where the inputs would cross axis. most games dont have input axis in the same plain anyway, so not too big an issue.
the actual display panel is great.. i prefer the color saturation and dark black over the high pixel density of the iphone4 LCD...
what sucks is the touchscreen hardware... i dont care too much about the lack of true multitouch but it is really "off" sometimes.. i get way more typos on the keyboard than when i had my iphone 1G and randomly the touch registers about a half inch off from where i touch
I see. Well maybe it was just me eyes then because you guys have all given it positive reviews pretty much. thanks for that
This is probably a really stupid question, but is it normal to be able to see the crystalline structure of the LCD screen on this phone? I just got it replaced today as my old phone was faulty, and basically if you look at this new one either at a slight angle, or when there's a reflection you can see all the small rectanglular structures making up the screen? I don't know if it's just that I never noticed on the previous one I had, or if it's a problem? First noticed it as when the screen is black it looks a bit stripey...
thanks.

Depends on the light and angle (black screen only), my one has the same. These are the capacitive screen sensors, nothing to worry about.

Do you have the JDC screen by any chance? I think it's only on the JDC screen that this occurs. My old one (before this replacement) was a sharp and didn't have this issue. I want to get it replaced but CPW say it's not really a fault as such. But this display is essentially terrible - colours aren't reproduced correctly, if I want to watch a film, everything is somewhat blue and it's essentially unusable outside because of how visible the sensors are.

Have the same issue here. Just bought the Xperia Z a week ago, and the touch sensors(if those are them) over the screen are really visible when outside and the light reflects it, basically makes no sense to have a fhd display if half transparent lines covering it. I have checked other Xperia Zs at phone shops and so far all of them had it. It's pretty annoying, and this is one of the reasons I will ask to exchange mine to an HTC one, aside of the poor battery life. Apart of that striking beautiful design.

Sharp manufactured screen here and the sensors are visible, although just barely, and only when the light hits it in the right (wrong) angle.
Same for me, on my c6602 the sensors are visible at any angle other than direct view. Its a jdc screen.
I also have a c6602 with a sharp screen and the sensors are barely visible. it actually seems like there is more space between the touch sensor and screen which hides them better than the Jdc. Although the Jdc does have better contrast.
Personally I can't stand seeing the touch sensors on the Jdc regardless of contrast and prefer the look of the sharp screen.

Got the Xperia Z yesterday and this issue drives me crazy... in 90% of the time I can see it. Inside, outside, different light environment etc.
It's a JDC display.
Thanks for this thread! JDC screen here too and mine looks exactly the same - I thought that my phone's faulty but now I can see that it's common with this screen producent.. It seems that you either get Sharp with greyish black or JDC with capacitors showing.. what a shame!
Anyone tried to contact Sony about this?
Got it too. No idea what's my screen, but is this something to worry about? I don't see any issues with the screen.

I believe that as long as it does not disturb you, it's not a problem. It won't break the phone in any way. It's mainly a matter of aesthetics, although it may also make reading the screen in direct sunlight more difficult.
Unless I'm mistaken? Anyone wishes to share their thoughts?
Good afternoon for all! I need your help! Yesterday I accidentally dropped my phone and when I looked at the screen I noticed two little problems, it works perfectly, but it has one dark scratch and a little dark spot, but I don't know if they are in the Touch Panel (Or Gorilla Glass, I don't Know) Or they are in the LCD Panel. The Scratch looks dark in front, but if you look putting the phone aside, it illuminates and looks white. The Dark spot becomes larger if you apply pressure. This two problems are almost not noticeable until I open White or Clear colors screens.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me to know from where is the problem, the Digitalizer or from the LCD. Sorry for my bad english! I Still learning!
It's the LCD, i had the same problem with my phone.
Thank's!

My XZ3 arrived today and the first thing I noticed is the "noise texture" the screen has, which is pretty noticeable on light colours with brightness under 50%.
Is my model faulty or you noticed this aswell?

It's expecially visibile with gray, atleast on my model. But it can be seen on white aswell. It's like a thin veil of dirt / dust on all the whites (not visible when brightness is at 100%)
seriously a bummer
Not sure if it's simply the dimming effect or you feel the image is grainy but I experience none of this as well. I can't even use full brightness unless I'm out in the sun.

I can clearly see a noisy pattern with lighter colours. It's clearly visibile when for example using google, as if the display was dirty from oil (altough the front glass is not).
Possibly defective unfortunately

Sadly I don't have a camera capable of highlighting the issue but everyone I showed the phone to noticed it.
A "noise texture" would be the best way to describe it. It's uniform on the display and visible when brightness is under 60-70%
My phone has this but I just assumed it was some property of the OLED screen. It doesn't really bother me at all.
I don't think it's deffective, it's just the OLED fabrication process from LG. If you come from a Samsung phone with an OLED screen, you can easily notice the graininess. I had the Pixel 2 XL before the XZ3 which also had an older gen OLED panel made by LG and it exhibited a similar effect on white/gray backgrounds.

The screen is not made by LG but by JDI. I confronted XZ3 display with other OLEDs (s6, s7, iphone xs and oneplus 6t) and the other ones got no effect of that sort.
It's not normal at all. I'd say it's a pretty serious problem regarding bad units of OLEDs since not only it hinders the light colours but it makes the image look less sharp and clear (the colours are not pure, therefore the contrast is hindered).
This worries me since at this point I'm not even sure Sony will recognize the issue.
As I tought I'm not the only one having it but people are not even considering it an issue because they consider it "normal". So much for the phone whose biggest pro was supposed to be the screen.

Unfortunately, you're wrong.
The panel is made by LGD, since JDI is still not mass-producing smartphone OLED panels (expected in 2019).

All of those, except maybe the oneplus, have samsung screens, which is light-years ahead of every other manufacturer.
You can look for the LG V30 and V40 screens. They're in a very similar spot: v30 - 2017 manufacturing process, very noticeable grain; v40 - 2018 manufacturing process, much better screen, less noticeable grain.

I think "the whole world" is a gross overstatement. Sony's mobile division just reported their worst year in sales. They've always been a niche brand, but I don't think the XZ3 sold very well.

Lots of reviewers are calling the XZ3 display as one of the absolute bests (some stating its the best they've ever seen).
Even GSMArena that does lab measurements didnt say anything.

Nevertheless, if you think it's an issue, you can try having it sent for warranty? Some people have said it's normal, some have not.

Yes, if you don't experience this, you unit is issue-free. I have also asked others to test, they have no issue at all.
This is why I think that *might* be a hardware/production issue.

Yes, that's what it would seem to suggest - and it's discouraging, I was really hoping this was a software issue. Would the 120 Hz refresh be a factor in this? That is, do you get the same result at 60 Hz?

Nothing. Either under charging or not, either 60Hz or 120Hz, no matter if Touch Sensitivity is set to low or high, it happens.
But as it doesn't happen for everyone with the same software, it tends to be a hardware issue or a production defect.

Thanks for the feedback. It seems not all users are having this issue. If you cannot reproduce the issue following the video instructions, then you are touch error-free. But then, it shows that it is not a general issue, but some manufacturing defect. For the red tint, I have seen your other post, I also have a barely visible greenish one, around where the camera is, and around the bottom 1/3 mark. But as it was stated, it is somewhat "normal".

Good question. I spoke with Samsung Support and they wanted me to visit the Service Center. I told them that I will not spend that much time on it, this phone is too expensive for having this kind of support. I will just return it and ask for a refund, then wait 1-2 months if the problem is solved.
I was just thinking yesterday...
This phone has Gorilla Glass 3 on the display, which is a way different structure than current GG6 (or GG4). GG3 is much thicker and more acts like a glass (breaks easier). Since GG4, newer Gorilla Glasses are more flexible, thinner, and more durable, too.
What if Samsung has just put a thick glass on top of a modern digitizer (touch panel) which was designed for a different structure and much thinner glass layer, and this causes the touch problems?

I notice it under normal circumstances like browsing, while straight looking at it, when the page background is like pale yellow/orange. It is only a bit visible, but when you read text and scroll, it is disturbing that the greenish tint remains on the screen. But honestly, this is not that bad. On a white background, I don't even notice it.
When I look from a bottom angle and moving the phone's angle, the tint bars move as well.

You mean are referring to the green tint correct? Are you saying that you have no reddish/pink tint at all on your phone?
I notice it very clearly when looking at it at angle or even normal position. And I can see it move when I move the phone to different positions.
the XDA review has the same issue actually (nothing on the touchscreen): https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s20-fe-review/
"The viewing angles, though, are disappointing because the display still features visible angular color shifting to blue as well as a rainbow out interference effect at extreme angles. Newer Samsung OLED panels have eliminated the rainbow out interference effect, and also reduced off-axis color shifting by a significant amount. The Galaxy S20+’s viewing angles, for example, are much better because the color shifting is much lower. Strangely, even the cheaper Galaxy M51 (review) doesn’t feature the interference effect issue (that is likely caused by the polarizer)."

True, I have no reddish tint, I have some greenish one When looking straight at the phone, it is around the opposite side of the camera, and about a thumb tall. But really, not that visible, I just see it because I know it is there
I read the quoted article. This can also easily happen because of Gorilla Glass 3, maybe it has different inner reflection that causes these bands.

That sounds reasonable...however, what about all the phones using GG5, 6, or above that have a tempered glass screen protector on them, which would certainly make the glass atop the digitizer much thicker, and that do NOT have any touch issues? It seems to me that the thickness of the glass...up to a reasonable measure that I do not know what it may be...is not the issue here because my S20 FE does not have the touch issues. But mine does always turn on in my pocket. So it seems as if the proximity sensor is faulty. I wonder if this "bug" is somehow related to the touch issues. Though they appear to be different problems...they are related to how the screen works. Clearly something is wrong and I am not sure that any of it can be fixed with software. SMH

You are right, I also thought of it, but not only the thickness, but also the material structure can cause problems like transferring more static electricity to the digitizer that cause ghost touches. And the glass screen protector is on top of the screen which is far enough in distance from the digitizer. I can also imagine that combining this digitizer with GG3 would require less manufacturing tolerance than they used, and that causes just too much defective units. Just guessing...
But as you also stated, problems are mostly with the screen and touch panel. Ghost touches, incorrect finger recognition causing jerks, pocket wakeup, reddish/greenish tint on the screen. And +1: not all users have this problem.
If this would be a software-related issue, all models would be affected more or less. If some units are fine, some are wrong, with the exact same software, then it should be a hardware-related problem. Question: do they used different brand of digitizers for different units, or there is just a huge ratio of defective units coming out of the factory because they had to put as many units on sale as they could because Pixel 5 and iPhone 12 has arrived and they wanted to catch a lot of customers? Just guessing, again...

If watching from bottom angle, I see the bands, but in straight view, I only see some greenish tint. It is not very disturbing for me. I mean, I have a LED TV, which has some of these typical IPS clouding effect on the screen edges. 99% of the time, it is not visible because the content is bright. But when watching a movie that has a night scene and there is no ambient light in the room, it is awful. But in general, I like the TV

Interesting, thank you for the response. I see the red tint straight on and at angles too, so maybe we have a similar issue but a different color?
I also have a LG OLED, which can look quite bad in some very dark scenes because of banding.

That might be the case! Different color, but the same tint / band.
