Moto Z3 pill navigation - Moto G6 Questions & Answers

Is there a mod to get the new navigation introduced in the Moto Z3. I know we can use the fingerprint sensor but I like the visual help.

All these apps on the play store use accessibility services which is a big compromise because it impacts in the overall performance of the system.

Does rooting the Moto X make it lose its features?

I am getting the AT&T Moto X within the next few days, and I know that it will have some bloatware on it. Would rooting the device do anything to damage the OS, or would it just be like most rootings and allow me to remove the bloatware?
It will allow you to remove bloatware. As far as I know all my features still work fine.
It may. Some apps check for root and disable things. Motorola bootloader unlock said something about not being able to rent movies/shows via Play since it can alter DRM protected stuff.......and some security prone apps like Google Wallet I think may be affected. I haven't tested either.
I had no problems with anything after I rooted. I haven't seen anyone complain about anything not working in the PwnMyMoto thread the last time I checked it.

I haven't had an issue renting or buying movies from the play movies app. Rooting didn't break tap to pay in my gnex. Relatively few apps are broken with root. None that I use thankfully.
Sent from my Moto X.
I haven't had any issues with any app not working because I'm rooted. If there are any issues you can easily hide root from those apps with an app from SuperCurio called OTA RootKeeper. It can be found in the play store.
How do you hide an app with OTA rootkepper. I rooted and am using some xposed themes and noticed that touchless control doesnt work for me?

It doesn't hide apps, it hides root by backing root up and doing a temp unroot. You can later restore root through the backup.

If your referring to all the custom Moto Features "moto connect, moto assist, active notifications etc." you will not lose these features by rooting. If you were to root & than change to a custom rom that did not have the moto features built in you would then lose your those features. Rooting only gives you writing ability on your filesystem (beyond the manufacture's consent).

Shutting down threads is my speciality.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but these threads are organized into certain sections for a reason. If I want an app or theme - I look here. If I want to answer or ask a question - I go to Q&A.

Google movies shouldn't have a problem, it's the downloaded videos (h246 or encrypted?).
In case you ever stumble upon an app that's giving problems because you're rooted, there's a xposed mod called RootCloak. With that you can hide your root access on a per app basis.

Hi,
I've the Latin America (Brazilian) version of the Moto X XT1058, so far I found it to be the easier version to have bootloader unlocked.
I already have my Unlock code from Motorola but here goes the question.
So far I found browsing the web that after you unlock the bootloader, some services may stop like Google play movies... Well.
I've one Galaxy S4 i9505 rooted and running the CM11, the google play movies don't work on it, return some error, but the play music work fine.
I do very often consume google content so my question lay on the google features itself. Will they stop working after bootloader unlock?
I want to remain stock, but I want to unlock and run Xposed to make some tweaks, for example remove the volume warming message when using headphones.
Thanks in advance !!!
Kind regards,
Johnny
Short answer is No. You will not lose any features by rooting. However, word of advice. If you even need to ask this question I would recommend learing how to return your device back to stock first. If you learn how to return back to stock then you will have more confidence modding your device. There will be bumps in the road where you WILL need to return your device back to stock.

Hello there!
Thank you very much for your reply!
Seems that in 2-3 weeks Lolipop will reach Motox XT1058, maybe the wise decision now would be wait than risk .
Kind regards,
Johnny

Lollipop, or wait for root?

So after all the hype for Lollipop and whatnot, I've been wondering what exactly the differences are between Lollipop and KK. Other than the theme, the lockscreen notifications (which we already have with moto display), and ART. Are there any other major differences?
Furthermore, what's the general opinion on the odds of root being achieved? I know it's more likely on KK, but is it worth waiting to update for, or should I take the Lollipop update when it's rolled out? I don't miss much coming from a rooted device, other than the firewall. Xposed would be nice but I can probably live without it.
Basically I just want to weigh my options for when the time comes.
I will wait.
Also - what can now be achieved without root?
For example:
A lot of apps now support functions that required root before
Tasker
Greenify
Etc.
Being able to disable apps somewhat replaces the need for titanium
Sent from my XT1254
Is there a way to disable the updates coming from Verizon? I want my phone as "stock" as possible in case we ever get root so I'm trying to freeze the HD Calling/VoLTE update from installing but not sure if there is currently a way to do that without having root?
New to the VZ and Droid scene
I just got my Turbo and that update so far has been more than just the Volte after doing an FDR I actually noticed a little better responsiveness. I am looking into battery life now. Even without root or unlocked bootloader it is a pretty cool phone. Aside from the battery draining bloat, does anybody have big drain issues with command center after the update ( that Verizon did instore )

One of the main reasons I want root at this point is to disable the capacitive lights. They stay on a lot of times when they really shouldn't, like when watching movies or videos.

Amazing. Thanks!
Absolutely! Every day I find a new app that replaces a need for root. If anyone else has any other similar discoveries (apps that can do things we normally needed root for) please don't hesitate!
Example: My GPS was toggled by itself once (I think through tasker), so I have high hopes that there is some way to toggle GPS without root.
-I'm trying to replicate what happened and what variables I used in tasker.

I think this is a very good discussion. Is there any news on someone even possibly finding a root method for 4.4? I'll wait if there's any hope of root, but I haven't heard any new info regarding root or even if there is any word of someone even looking into it.

I dont think you should wait to get lollipop once its released. I feel the hold up currently is because lollipop is close to getting released thats its pointless to release a root method now. After the first lollipop update dont i wouldnt take anymore

[APP][Moto Display]Activate Moto Display by waving over proximity sensor

Hello everybody.
We all know that Moto Display is very useful and shows incoming notification. In Moto G and E devices, it activates when the phone is moved from its position, or when a flip cover over the phone is opened. However I have heard that in Moto X devices, it activates even if you wave over the proximity sensor.
So I thought of making a small app that does the same. It is on Play Store.
MotoDisplay handwave
This might be helpful to some people like me. Do hit the Thanks button if it helped you. Also rate the app a five star ??
TO BE USED ONLY ON STOCK FIRMWARE. NO CUSTOM ROMS SUPPORTED
This is a great app, I was missing a lot this feature when moving from Moto X!
Please consider using the Android ActivityRecognitionAPI to trigger the moto display only if the phone is in the "STILL" state. Otherwise the battery will be drained pretty fast when carrying the phone in the pocket, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, will obviously look into it.
Regarding battery drain, the proximity sensor is always on even if this app is not used (Moto Display activates if you keep the proximity covered for some time and then remove the cover).
Also the app has been designed so that it won't activate MD if the phone is in pocket.
Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware that the proximity sensor is always on. You are right, the Moto Display turns on when the phone is taken out of a pocket, etc. Now I just wonder why Motorola decided not to offer this as part of the stock application. To protect Moto X sales?

Not a stupid question. I did mention that the ROM needs to be stock ROM. So this confusion might arise.
This app has nothing to do with root directly. It doesn't check for safety net. It will work whether you are rooted or not.
There is however an exception. If you use any root based utility to uninstall Moto Display apk from system, this app will no longer work.
Hey! Nice work!
I can translate it to brazilian portuguese!
Loved the app.
I also can translate it to PT-BR
moto g5 plus does bring up display when moved, y do we need this app then?

Enable Google Assistant

I don't know if all of you know this stuff, but I'd like to share anyways. I didn't knew it before.
But basically you can enable that new cool Google Assistant on our device and on any android 6.0 and 7.0 device. I enjoy it quite a lot to be honest. Much better than previous version.
So, here's the guide. It's very simple. Yeah, have fun...

Bootloader unlock & rooting

So clearly this is still very early days given the phone is barely released yet but this is my first Sony Xperia device and just wanna check if the following will be possible when I receive it...
1) use this website to unlock the bootloader https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader/
2) extract the boot img
3) patch the boot img with magisk and flash
Thanks in advance
Ah just found this site too

Will be great to root and get xposed + gravitybox!
Be carefull, unlocking bootloader gave in the past lesser features for the camera.

Thanks for the heads up, that's interesting and a little concerning! Hmm I guess we'll see how it goes...
Hmm seems perhaps losing such functionality could be avoided...
The link is not posting for some reason but Google "How to Backup and Restore Sony Xperia Z+ DRM Keys and Keep DRM Functionality after Root", perhaps this method could work
I've emailed Sony via the developers website whether unlocking the bootloader will result in losing camera features. Will post back here if/when they reply.
It'd be great to know, as if I get my device next Thurs I would love to get it rooted for substratum theming, ad blocking, edxposed etc
Here is Sony's response. Seems its gonna take a brave person to try this out! I think I'll likely just enjoy the device stock for a short while to get a feel for it and then see if unlocking is gonna be an option, as I wouldn't want to lose features but also I don't want a rootless android....
Perhaps the backup TA partition option (and the DRM keys) is the answer, but I don't know enough....
Not worth it in my opinion but to each his/her own.

This is great! Has there been any detrimental effect at all? I mean obviously unlocking can pose some risks but indeed so long as nothing breaks or I won't lose any of the great capabilities I'm buying this phone for, then I'll likely just root soon after receiving it ?
Here is a thought, why not first try the phone in stock ?
I mean i was all for unlocking in the past, hell i even created custom roms.
But that was the time that we could actually add new features to the phone.

Oh definitely, that'll be what I'll do initially. I'll spend a day or 2 (patience permitting) just completely out of the box fresh and untouched, the way its intended to get that feel for the device. It'll be my first Sony so I wanna see how it runs. Curious also if the advertised motion blur reduction runs well, in comparison to the 90hz I'm used to. I wanna see how the battery life holds up to my usage and I definitely wanna get used to the pro mode camera etc.
Then, I'll enjoy rooting (which by then perhaps others are posting their experiences too) for all the benefits that brings. Plus then there's custom rom support in the works too.
Oh I just love that new device feeling!

Only detrimental effect to the camera for the Xperia 1 was letting Sony write the software for it.
You'd lose the DRM keys so you'll lose the video enhancement, sound enhancement, widevine keys for watching stuff in HD and above in certain apps like Netflix.
Unlocking isn't really worth it in my opinion when software is pretty much stock Android with the DRM stuff.

If I remember right it was the DSEE for upscaling audio to HD that was lost.
If you get the phone to focus on media then keep i'd keep it locked to be on the safe side. Let others unlock it first then see what they say.

Apologies if this is a total newbie question, but do I have to unlock the bootloader to flash official firmware too? I'm getting the phone from O2 in the UK and wanted to flash EE or generic EU firmware to unlock WiFi calling.
