ota updates while rooted - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello!
I unlocked and rooted my p20 pro with magisk. I have the CLT-L04. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out where to get the updated ota files and how to flash them with fastboot. I have done some reading although it is unclear.
Also unsure if it's worth keeping my phone unlocked since Huawei won't be providing codes in four days.
Best regards

Download firmware here:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teammt.gmanrainy.huaweifirmwarefinder
And flash via hurupdater
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/tool-flash-official-firmware-recovery-t3769279
And even you relock your BL, you can use the same code unlock it again.

Great thank you that worked. I can't seem to find the code I used to unlock my bootloader, does it need to be the same? (Not planning on relocking, just curious)
Also my live wallpapers have now disappeared? I would appreciate if anyone have the theme files.
Cheers

Hi there bro! Noticed that you might be from Manila, too. I am also using a Huawei P20 Pro and on the verge of rooting. Been using Samsung mobiles for the past 4 years and have rooted all of them. Got the P20 Pro 3 months ago and somehow I cannot go on not having it rooted hehe.
Here are some notes:
1. I got the unlock code for the bootloader 2 days before Huawei stopped giving them out last month.
2. I have downloaded the TWRP (praetorian version)
3. Got Magisk v16.0
4. ADB and fastboot ready for use on mac.
A couple of questions:
1. Is it a good time to root now?
2. Why do some unlock/relock their bootloader??
Looking forward to your pieces of advice. Thanks in advance!
Cheers!

Hi,
to answer your questions:
1. Rooting is a personal preference. IF you're rooting to flash customs, there's no really available custom ROMs for this device at the moment. IF you need apps that needs root access and don't care about warranty, then root.
2. Not sure about his one. I don't see any benefit of locking BL aside from the disabling of the annoying "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted" warning when booting. Maybe claiming for warranty....

Amazing! I appreciate your input bro. I'll root later tonight. Thanks again! :good:
By the way, do I need to download newer tools for rooting or I have all the things I need?

(Question) About rooting Nokia 8 (Locked Bootloader)

So, I would like to ask some questions. Since we know that HMD Nokia hasn't given us any news about unlocking bootloader which gives me bit impatient. I was wondering if it is actually possible to achieve ROOT without unlocking bootloader.
I dont really care with Custom recovery TWRP for a while and unlocking bootloader. Seeing how many apps in Play store or to unlock full potential of the phone requires root, it is like as if your phone is restricted or limited. Backup is essential for me and I frequently use Titanium backup.
I tried using Framaroot, King root, Kingo root and none of them worked. Based on the thread in this below, someone managed to successfully root Nokia 8 but it's a prototype from what I saw. I am using Nokia 8 non-prototype one. Is it possible to do it?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-8/development/testing-flash-patched-boot-img-to-t3729396
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-8/development/question-nokia-8-partitions-t3682617
It has been 6 months since the release (CMIIW), the phone is still not unlockable which makes me sad that I regretted ever buying this phone. I was wishing that people in the community or someone out there can manage to hack + mod the phone with root like Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Been waiting for it.
So back to summary, is it possible to root with locked bootloader?
For now, it is not possible. Sadly. We just have to wait for nokia to make unlocking bootloader possible or someone to figure some way to bypass security bs and get root.
This might be a solution

Root honor 9n? A mystery yet to be solved by magisk

I bought honor 9n but can find anu root method. Pls if presnt im simple steps,
You first have to unlock your bootloader, but Huawei is no longer giving those unlock codes out
Sent from my H1611 using Tapatalk
Honor/Huawei completely locked their botloader and it is impossible to root or tweak them.
Depending on which huawei devices and which firmware, you can still be able to unlock, for now, using alternative paying service.

Even if he pays, it won't be of much use because in their latest update, they patched the kernel in a way so that we can't root their phones anymore even if the bootloader is unlocked.

yes, this is true.
i'm on Nova 2s, same thing happen on me after i flash latest upate (Patch01), magisk is not working.
although when i check, my bootloader is still unlocked, that is a small good news.
when i check and compare older and latest kernel.img and ramdisk.img, they've made a couple changes in them, maybe seniors will find out how to workaround this and we will have root again!

a free way to unlock bootloader?

hey y'all, so I have a clt-l29 from latin america (though i'm in the usa), and I have an idea of how to root for free and I haven't seen it mentioned here so I figured I'd ask if y'all think it'll work
before anything obviously back up your phome if you don't want to lose data
the first step you'll have to stay with me on: root with kingroot or another one click root service (yes, i know these can contain spyware; that will be fixed later)
^^^ I can't complete this step because the clt-l29 can only be rooted with oneclickroot, which costs money, so it defeats the whole purpose. but i know other p20 pro versions are supported on kingroot and kingoroot
the second step would be able to follow the guide at https://forum.xda-developers.com/p8lite/general/alternative-method-unlocking-bootloader-t3799294 - retrieving your unlock code with superuser adb (originally i read another guide that didn't include all of the other steps, just the commands)
then just unlock it with fastboot, and flash the stock firmware again so the spyware is gone.
my question is, would this work? i can't follow through, unless y'all maybe know of a way to use superuser adb without root or a one click root solution for the clt-l29? has this worked for y'all?

T-Mobile 6T to International Conversion (WITHOUT unlocked bootloader/SIM unlock!)

In the previous thread, we discussed a method to convert T-Mobile 6T's to the international variant, sort of, but it required an unlocked bootloader, which itself requires a SIM unlock which T-Mobile gives people a hard time about.
However, it is through @Dark Nightmare and @iaTa's efforts that we've come this far. Today, I share with everyone a new method to turn a T-Mobile 6T into an international variant. One that does NOT require an unlocked bootloader or a SIM unlock!
Before you proceed: Following the steps below WILL wipe your phone. Please backup all of your important files from the phone before proceeding.
Here are the steps:
1) Download 6T MsmDownloadTool v4.0.58 (OOS v9.0.11) provided by @iaTa
2) Download patched flasher tools here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dYuVxnf_J97KPrRt6KEBOjau1BRvtnJQ (the patches simply remove checks that allow all the images to be flashed on the phone, I've personally tested the "MsmDownloadTool V4.0_factory_patched.exe" but not the "MsmDownloadTool V4.0_factory_mcl_op1_patched.exe" variant. You can do a binary diff on the EXEs against the originals in case there's any issues with trust.
3) Shut down your T-Mobile 6T completely
4) Press and hold Volume Up and Volume down keys simultaneously
5) With those two buttons held down, plug in your USB cord to your PC
6) Ensure that the USB drivers for Qcom download mode are installed and working (available in the MSMDownloadTool thread)
7) Extract the patched tools EXEs to the same directory as where you extracted the MSMDownloadTool
8) Run "MsmDownloadTool V4.0_factory_patched.exe" (or the other one, if you're feeling adventurous)
9) Click "Start" when you're ready to start patching the phone
10) After about 5 minutes it will finish its job and reboot the phone
11) Phone will boot normally, but no more T-Mobile logo, and instead there is the OxygenOS generic logo
12) Now your T-Mobile 6T is now running identical software to the unlocked 6T sold directly by OnePlus, and running the latest software (OxygenOS 9.0.11 at the time of this writing). You can even participate in Open Betas if you'd like, and the "Local Upgrade" feature is now enabled and working.
13) ???
14) Profit
Hope this helps somebody out.
It definitely works.
If you want to unlock bootloader after it's converted, then it's just a simple fastboot oem unlock WITHOUT having to wait 7 days for OnePlus unlock bin. Just like the 6T sold by OnePlus directly. And you can even load a dual-SIM tray and both SIM slots work normally.
This is great news! Did this method override the critical partitions in your test to fully convert? Did it become a full conversion or is it just another cool method to use the international Oxygen OS? You think OTA will work as normal now as well instead of doing a local upgrade and etc? Great job and excuse the numerous questions. I'm just curious and excited about this. I've been lurking in these related threads all this time and watching them progress. Lol
@AnonymousTipster change the title from "conversation" to "conversion".
Amazing guide by the way, nice job.
My tmo variant 6T is carrier unlocked and bootloader unlocked and converted to international via the old conversion method downloading the full OTA and flashing the "flash all" bin.
By using this MSM tool, after it locks up my bootloader again, can I still use my old unlock bin? Or will I have to request a new bin key from OnePlus?
I just tested this and can happily confirm that it works!!! Thank you!!!

The answer is two posts above yours. As the whole phone had been rewrote you have the international version and therefore don't need any bin key.
Besides using Magisk or another Launcher, is there a way to maintain the Google Now tab when swiping to the far right?
So, it's fully and 100% conversion? Meaning that full and incremental OTA's can get them worry free?

Won't know until the next OTA is released, to date we are unable to get OTAs, but local upgrade works fine.

Ok, so we will have to test until next one comes out? Gotcha!
Just did the conversion, so far so good. Running the OPBackup/Restore to get everything setup.
I was running 9.06 for a while then switched back to the T-mobile rom.
Yesterday I tried to convert to 9.011
The phone would reboot itself right after I got to the setup screen so I MSM back to T-Mobile rom.
Does anyone know if this method would correct that bug?
Holy s h i t
Nice work! I am elated the project has come this far!..nicely done guys! I'll guinea pig it up with the other exe later.
This is great news!! Well try it out today as well.. Sidebar here.. Will the international firmware support a double SIM tray or is the hardware the sticking point?
Thanks again
Excellent job... Can't wait to get home and switch.
Good bye... T-Mobile...No more waiting for your update!!! :silly:
This is awesome, thank you for the post! So after converting, we can unlock the bootloader and flash a custom kernel the same way? I was tempt on keeping my bootloader locked to keep HD videos for Netflix and any other app. I hear it's not safe to flash a custom kernel and then re-lock bootloader? Any advice would be nice.
Nonetheless, glad to see we can convert without having to unlock the bootloader! Cheers!

Questions about using the OPBackup/Restore as this is my first OP phone. Sorry if I sound dumb LOL, Just never used OPBackup/Restore before...Thanks for any help.
Do I need to setup an account on the OP site to backup?
When doing a restore do you skip during setup/sign in as far as all apps being downloaded from google?
And does the OPBackup/Restore restore all apps and settings putting the phone right back where it was before?

Yes you can unlock the bootloader after the conversion and flash anything you'd like at that point. However I don't recommend relocking your phone if you've flashed anything custom as that could leave your phone in a soft bricked state and you'd have to wipe your phone again with msm tool.

Question Updates about Realme 8 pro modding options

Hi all, i don't follow modding world from a while so i don't know what happened more or less into the last 3 years, so now that i need to root the device i wanted to do some questions.
I bought a realme 8 pro at the dayone and now i have the last update installed (so realme UI 4.0). I wanted to do the root but i don't know how much realme support it, if the bootloader is locked or not, ecc. ecc.
I saw in this phone thread that there is a method (the guide is written in May, 14 so it seems very recent) about unlocking bootloader (so i guess is locked?) using deeptest, i tried to read but i didn't really understand what kind of thing is that. So i wanted to ask, what is deeptest? if it is locked, if i successfuly unlock this bootloader what happens to AIO updates? (I guess there will be no updates such as other devices?). If the AIO updates stop to work, Is there a way to manually download and install updates? Can i root this device using magisk for example? I have seen there is something, but there are these things i can't understand.
Thanks in advance for replies and sorry for my bad english.
Hi, yup, the bootloader is locked.
Deeptesting is an app by realme used to request an unlock code. You can try this one https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-bootloader-help.4425415/post-86777721
Try submitting your application, if it tells you "Your model doesn't support deeptesting" you'll have to follow my guide.
Either way, after a bit of waiting, inside Deeptesting → query approve result → start Deeptesting.
Doing this allows your phone to boot into fastboot. Where you can unlock your phone using
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your data.
Hi, thanks for the reply! So there is a method to unlock the bootloader. But if i do it, i can't update anymore my device via OTA, right? How could i do that thing. In addiction, is not possible to obtain root permission without bootloader unlock? Because i need root to save whatsapp messages 'cause the application is stupid and can't do a backup by itself.
In addiction... I downloaded deeptesting and my phone does not support it. Yeah
You can get OTAs if, and only if, you didn't modify the firmware. Unlocking itself doesn't break OTAs, but rooting/custom kernels/vbmetas etc. will.
You can't get root without unlocking. As per Whatsapp, I think you can use ADB to back up data without root.
Thanks again. As i know ADB is disabled for whatsapp from a while. Ok then, thanks anyway for all informations. I guess after the bootloader unlock i can install magisk to obtain root acces.
