Supcase Unicorn beetle style series - Review - OnePlus 7T Accessories

Hello all,
Just got my supcase delivered today and on first look it's really of premium quality and looks great on the phone. I had been looking out for cases from the launch date and none of them were upto the mark. I had been using supcase on my previous phones and they have always been great. So i sent them an email asking if unicorn beetle style would be available for the OnePlus 7T and got a positive reply that by November it would be available. And boom, here it is in Amazon india.
About the case :
Premium
Has a good camera cutout protection
Front display protection has a good lip on top and bottom (tempered glass applied)
Not a TPU case so no yellowish case after a few months
Cons - Makes the device slightly larger to hold but will get used to in a few days( but better than most of the cases out there).
Overall I'm really satisfied
Now let the pictures do the talking.
Oh btw i wanted a case that could show off the colour of the phone plus look good. I saw many transparent cases with black border but everything had one flaw - the camera cutout protection black strip was hiding the OnePlus logo a bit and it looked cheap(A few had their pictures posted as if the logo wasn't hiding but in real it was hiding the OnePlus logo). Guess only ringke had the correct cutout other than supcase.

Hi. Thank you for this review, was just looking at it.
Do you use the official oneplus tempered glass? Does it hinge the glass protector up like many others do? I have the official one and this is a must for me.

Question regarding the clear back; does it fill up with lint and dirt? I always felt that clear cases filled with lint and pocket **** when using it for a long period of time. Basically when I take off my 1+ case it's always got dirt in it anyway so I assume this would show through the clear back..

I have used tempered glass from glazed Inc and its similar to full screen tempered glass from official OnePlus and this case does not hinge.
Case is tempered glass friendly.

I too faced this issue using original tpu from oneplus.
I am not sure if this supacse will get filled up with dirt. For now nothing's inside the case. But I remember the OnePlus case had dirt inside it even on day one and i kept cleaning it every two days or so regularly.
From past few days there's nothing inside this clear case(supcase)

Can you provide a top down image on the screen so I can see the case lip? May get a better idea with that. Thank you

Current case and screen protection

I was going through this thread to see what screen protectors and cases you all people use as a kind of recommendation for my next case and screen protector. But all you people are scattered in different posts discussing things.
So lets make things easy for everyone.
Post your current setup (the past one as well if you want) and your view about that. And the links and some photos would be loved for sure. :good:
.
.
And a thanks if this thread helps you get a case or skin or screen protector in future
Am myself using Bracevor wallet cover with the the stock screen film. No skin whatsoever. (planning to change this all soon)
Amazon India: http://www.amazon.in/Bracevor-BROPL3ELLCBR-Premium-Leather-Cover/dp/B0157OUT7C
The oem carbon fiber case paired with the oem curved screen protector is absolutely perfect. Can't even feel the seam between the glass and case. I hate cases in general, but I adore this setup.
Using the orzly multifunction wallet with the official tgsp.
Works a treat.

Sandstone case and nude screen. Can't stand screen protectors
Using the OtterBox case from OnePlus with the official curved tempered glass protector. I love the case, but I botched the TGSP installation, so I'll probably end up ordering a new one.

How's the day to day usage with bumper case? Is it worth the money? Any comparison with other cases you have used?
The main reason for getting the case was to showcase the metal back of the op3. And it does that beautifully.
The quality is great, however its a bit loose on the sides (by no means it will pop out, needs considerable effort) due to which sometimes the alert slider does not work, you have to press and move it. Is not noticeable unless you pull at the sides.
Does not add any thickness overall apart from the upper and the lower lip on the back. However the phone feels a bit broader in hand.
Overall happy, although pricey for 1700 inr ordered via their site 5$ discount covered the shipping.
I also have the sandstone and spigen tough armor.

Buy the gadgetshieldz screen protector. It is also film type one and durable too. Also it gives you the option of full phone film.
I have ordered one because my onePlus3 has many scratches one the surface, but the protector has reduced the display quality. Is there any screen protector that does not reduce the display quality? I have removed the protector, because for me it is better with scratches on the display than having reduced contrast by protector.
By the way, i never had scratches on any Phone display. The resistance to scratches seems to be very bad on this phone.

But it doesnt protect against falls does it? THE screen will crack..😣

Don't buy tempered glass protection for 1+5!!

It seems that all currently available on AliExpress (at least) tempered glass protection are flawed, because of:
1- Protectors that covers the body in full, and has some black areas: has actually glue only on the black non-transparent zones, but nothing on display area it self (so only display ages, upper and lower parts has glue), this makes it rubbish, because it will not stick well to the screen, one or two gaming sessions and it will end in recycle bin.
2- Fully transparent one, with full screen coverage: because 1+5 has 2.5D screen, those covers will not stick well on phone edges since tempered glass is rigid, this maybe can be used only with covers that overlap edges of the screen also.
3-Fully transparent one that don't cover all of the screen: those usually stick well, but only if they left about 5mm on each edge uncovered! I believe it is clear that such a gap ruins the protective purpose of the tempered glass, aside the ugly look due to gaps. (Again, having an edge overlapping cover could make it look better)
So it seems the only practical option for now is to use usual non glass protection unfortunately.
If I missed something or you have some suggestions please let me know..Some manufacturers claims that there protector is 4D, what means that it should solve all above issues, i didn't try those yet, anybody tested them?
I am regretting removing original 1+5 protection
As I bought and still use an Orzly tempered glass protector I concur with your analysis at this time. When I first applied the Orzly is was perfect without the issues some experienced but after 3+ weeks the sides must have lifted slightly due to my bumper case and dust particles got underneath next to the left/right buttons. Since then I've been religiously looking for an alternate that passes the case test but none so far have come to light.
I like the feel of the tempered glass so much that I've resisting going back to the film/plastic alternatives which I had always used in the past. I'm even considering going naked on the screen, relying on Gorilla Glass 5, but continue with a bumper case. Or the reverse, by using an Orzly but with no bumper case as I already have a dBrand skin applied. None of those options seem all that appealing. The one protector that seems to work with a 2.5D screen is the Galaxy 8's Whitestone Dome Glass but it's a crazy expensive $41USD and difficult to apply. I'm not sure even if a OnePlus 5 version was available I'd spend that much money.
I haven't had any luck with any tempered glass., due to point 2 which has been raised:
2- Fully transparent one, with full screen coverage: because 1+5 has 2.5D screen, those covers will not stick well on phone edges since tempered glass is rigid, this maybe can be used only with covers that overlap edges of the screen also.

After reading all of the reviews I decided just to leave the plastic one on until someone gets their act together and offers a proper tgsp for the OP5
Sent from my OnePlus5 using XDA Labs
Agreed with OP and all of above. I had and still have the Orzly TG protector on, but dust underneath. I want to go back to the usual plastic ones, but don't know which one covers as well/much as the original one that came with the phone. Any recommendations?

Im still waiting for my Nilkin glass protector to arrive (it's almost been a month, sigh)
If this one has the same issue as the ones I've tried before it (lack of adhesive around the edges), I'm going to try and go back to using plastic screen protectors.
I don't want to use my device without one, but I also hate how these glass protectors don't fully adhere to the screen around the sides (including top and bottom)

The YouTube channel you mention is also my favorite choice for screen protector info for the Oneplus 5. He always tests the protectors with various cases. His branding of the channel can get annoying but his market coverage is excellent and vast. With the plethora of tempered screen protectors its your choice for an accompanying case that often makes a big difference in your satisfaction. Here is the Big unBox - Biuzko review.
One thing I noticed is when the Big unBox applied the Official OnePlus 5 tgsp video it had lots of bubbles on the edges that he said couldn't be removed while I watched XDA's TK review and his application looked perfect with TK giving it a thumbs up. In the comment section of that review TK said all was well even after a month of usage. I was surprised as the Official tgsp has garnered horrible reviews and comments in the XDA Oneplus 5 accessories section. The most consistent criticism of the Official tgsp is that it cuts off a tiny fraction of the screen. In fact, so far my research indicates all of the "Full Adhesive", "Full coverage" tgsp cut off part of the screen. Personally I think the reason they have a black line on the edges is to hide inevitable bubbles due to the curved edge. The thicker the tempered glass the wider the side black stripes (e.g. Orzly versus Official).
Here is the criteria I'm using in selecting a replacement for my Orzly tgsp and cheap bumper case. Note that I've already installed a dBrand skin so that skews my criteria somewhat.
Tempered Glass screen protector:
- Must have full adhesive (not just top/bottom and side adhesion) and full coverage
- Would prefer, but am a tiny bit flexible on, part of the screen being cut off (limit is that not one pixel of the notification bar's clock is trimmed)
- Must have an oleophobic coating
Case:
- Needs to be as non intrusive as possible adding grip but not greatly ruining the sleekness of the phone
- Uses a minimalist design and/or clear materials so as not to obstruct viewing of the dBrand skin I've installed
- With the case on the buttons (power and volume rocker) must not be difficult to press
So far my research has me leaning towards the Official OnePlus 5 or Biuzko tgsp with a Rhinoshield Crashguard case. My one issue is that the Rhinoshield reviews always mention how difficult the volume rocker buttons are to press. Here is the video that has me leaning in that direction as is seems to best address my criteria
OnePlus 5 best case/protector setup
I'll being doing more reading and searching today hoping to find the unicorn of tgsp/case combinations. The dust under my Orzly is driving me mad but the feel and responsiveness of its surface has me rejecting a film/plastic protector alternative.
I'm using the Biuzko as well with the Tudia MERGE case no problems.
The trick is to first put OP5 in the case, THEN place the screen protector on. It fits perfectly, and you can't mess up the alignment since it falls right in. Then I just try to put pressure on the sticky parts for a few minutes.
I've had no problems for 3 weeks now.
I installed mine the same way, but I'm using the op5 carbon fiber case.

Hello,
I recommend you the plastic screen protectors from GadgetShieldz. I made a review about it on another post on xda but to summarize, it's a bit difficult to apply but then it's great. The screen looks good and it's cheap ^^ highly recommend.
FYI, I was struggling with TGSP for the OP5 and I just gave up. There is no good alternative atm.

Skinomi makes a wet application protector in both clear and matte. I posted pics of the matte version here. Since that post, I've experienced no scratches or orange peel effect. It's also great for no fingerprints.
You can always get the Nillkin H+ Pro, but only if you are using a spigen case or otterbox. Right now I am using the Spigen Rugged Armor with Nillkin H+ Pro and the gap between the glass and the case is around 1 mm (i would say 1.5 mm if I have to be more accurate). The Otterbox case is even better but I find it too bulky, tried it once for an hour and I did not enjoy it, but some of you may like it.
Few words about the Nillkin H+ Pro.
I know there are few variants of the Nillkin glass and I have tried all of them in the past. In my opinion the best glass is exactly the H+ Pro even tho it is a 1 dollar more expensive. The glass has zero rainbow effect or halo effect, it is 99 to 100% clear. It has amazing orleophobic coating. My Honor 8 has the same glass for 6 months now and it is flawless. I am going to change my nillkin glass with the official 3D tempered glass but only because I received the rhinoshield bumper. Otherwise I would not change my nillkin. You are going to get used to the small gap in a week or so.
Don't leave the phone without a glass.
I just applied mine, best screen protector I ever had, pure quality. Quote me on that
I love the official OnePlus screen protector, it's premium & looks good. Who ever made this thread is straight up wrong. The one he recommended is no Bueno, the glass part doesn't have enhesive. Look I am a OnePlus 5 conisuer, the screen protector is fantastic ?
I have siegen case. Can I buy the original screen protector from oneplus store with no problems? Or can I suggest me something with dust proof and oil proof ?

OnePlus 5T Official Tempered Glass Screen Protector Review

Hi folk,
With another OnePlus product comes another OnePlus attempt at making a tempered glass screen protector which works for it. Will it be this time that is the magic attempt?
If you dont want to or can't watch the video here are my thoughts:
Yes, they seem to have finally made a tempered glass which fits perfectly on the screen without much cut off. I say much as I think there is still a tiny cut off, but it's nowhere near as noticeable as it was on the 3/3t or 5. If you want to take a look, its on the video at around the 4:04 mark.
The quality is excellent, you can barely feel or see that it's there. There are no sharp edges as the screen tapers off at the edge. It's a full glue screen protector so there is no dot matrix or rainbox effects. You do however have to be fairly careful whilst applying it and taking it off its bed as it feels like it could snap fairly easy if you rush it.
Pros:
Good fit
Feels premium
No dot matrix
No rainbox effect
Cons:
Pricey
Could break easily whilst installing
On the pricey mark, if OP have managed to make this perfect this time, I'd expect third party manufacturers to release a similar product soon at a cheaper price. So if you want to wait and do that I wouldn't blame you.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jono
Thanks for that, good to know as I ordered one with my 5T.
Hopefully there is a decent bunch of 3rd party ones too.
A spigen tempered glass is my all time favorite screen guard.

Thanks for this. I wanted to know how much it will cut of the screen but its much lesser than earlier.
But i need to disagree something with you. You (and many others) said it was issue etc. on OP3/3T/5 what last TGSP cutted off screen. Well it wasnt really issue or fault on Oneplus side. They needed to choose to have adhesives only on sides and no cut-off or adhesives on fully but had to cut-off. That was because of OP3/3T/5 front glass design where glass started ro bend (2.5D) earlier than usual. Thats why black borders was bigger as otherwise you would get ugly halo's and nobody likes that.
About price. Dont know where you leave but here in Finland 20€ price is nearly cheapest TGSP avaible here. Usually TGSP's here costs around 25-50€ depending of phone model so 20€ is more than just normal price for us. So okay maybe its little pricey compared ro your country but on many others it isnt.
This is my first OP device so I know nothing about past issues, but this is by far the best fitting, best sealing TGSP I have ever installed. Typically with screen protectors the edges do not want to seal/stick but the squeegee made quick work of getting all the bubbles out. There are a few pieces of inevitable lint but not one single bubble.
It does cut a tiny bit of the screen off which gives a weird depth to the screens appearance so for that I give it 9/10. If it was totally clear or just had the black at the top and bottom it would be 10/10 for sure.

Mine is not so perfect and the screen is slightly cover on the edge. is not a huge problem, but is noticeble if you see the phone from a side.

I just removed the protector to see how the screen looks naked. The "grainy-ness" is gone. I also noticed a potential problem with the protector. The adhesive doesn't go all the way to the top or bottom of the protector, so when I removed it I found a lot of dust stuck to the top and bottom bezel of the phone. This could cause scratches. Even though the scratches would not be on the display, I don't want scratches anywhere on the glass. If I keep this phone I'll try an IQshield.
With the bubbles settling behind, a lot of little dust has been captured.
I also notice grainy-ness. I'm likely going to ditch it and just go naked...
I just got my for 10€. And yes, it still crops a bit from both sides but not like OP3/3T/5. And yes, there is grainy-ness as stated above. You cant notice on black background but on white yes.
I bought the '5T full scratch protection' bundle with my phone. I have an unopened "3D Tempered Glass Screen Protector" and an opened (but unused) "Sandstone Protective Case". My plan was going to be to use the case until Spigen comes out with a 5T case, but I just decided to rock the case that came with my 5T instead.

To be frank I wouldn't have noticed the grainy screen till I read your comment. But now that I've read it.... The screen protector does induce the grainy effect. It's a perfect fit imho, though it definitely does give out that grainy effect. I'm guessing I'll stop noticing it in a couple of days time.
I had an extra IQshield (wet apply) protector for a Pixel 2 XL. I cut a little off the top and it fit fine. I must say, the IQshield is very clear, no grainy screen for me.
I have to put my 2 cents in on this. The official tempered glass is pretty great. I had no issue installing, it stayed in place, zero bubble at all, and feels great. using it with the official sandstone case.

OMG! Yes, I've been thinking the same thing. There were a few xda users that said the Spigen cases were overrated. I'll consider getting the screen guard. Need to see it in person.
I bought the Official Glass Protector. Installation went okay but I managed to get a few small dust specs to catch onto the bottom of the glass so have a few bubbles. Other than that it is perfect. Can't even tell a glass protector is on. Touch response remains the same too.
The original OP 5T case is outstanding, it has a very good grip and looks like carbon fiber material and not to forget the 1+ legendary logo on the back.
does it go above the case or is it pretty even with the stock case? meaning is the screen protector thick
Also got the official tempered glass protector.
Touch response and feel is fine, but both sides have been clipped by the black side bars of the protector, not much, but noticeable especially if watching a zoomed video, on the fastboot screen and unlocked bootloader warning screen (ala OP5).

Cropping is much smaller than what it was with OP3/3T/5.
Yes it's less, just thought mentioning it's still present was relevant.

Whoever wishes to install the glass, do it in your bathroom after having a hot steamy shower. The price of the glass is totally justified iff you are able to install it properly without any single bubble. Otherwise its a waste. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't installed screen protectors by themselves because you are bound to go wrong either with the alignment or the application/cleaning. Go for a good quality plastic screen protector instead or keep your original screen protector that came with the phone
I bought the official big boss bundle.
The glass protector was great and fitted perfect without any bubbles.
I gave the headphone to my friend as I already had a good pair and the case is a bit useless it's not even raised or anything so does jot protect it at all, I went for the carbon fibre one.

Oneplus official silicone case problem

The case attracts a lot of dust whenever I put it in my pocket. I used it for a little bit before the dust problem got really annoying and i bought another tpu case on amazon. Any fixes for the dust problem? I really love the feel of the case and the cutouts are better than the TPU so I want to use it.
Me too facing the same problem, but I have lost that cover. Any idea where to find the official one? It is not available on the website.
hey guys is it true that case is responsible for some negative effect on the matte finish?the matte finish is coming off after using it for around 2-3 weeks?
I've just got the phone this week and I've ordered a ringke onyx case for the phone. I think its best to stay away from the offical case that comes with the phone just to be on the safe side as some users here experienced paint chipping after using the case provided inside the box.
I got the 5t the day it came out and used that stock Silicon case for about 2 months without any sign of paint chipping. It did collect dust like a vacuum. I got 4-5 cases on AliExpress for under $5 each and they too have dust problems. the one I use has a clear plastic back, so I can see it all of the time.
Did drop my phone today and scratched the stock film cover. Pulled it back and it didn't damage the screen, but now I get to research the best film screen, since the last time I researched it, there was no good tempered glass one that didn't have issues

In the tempered glass topic, the topace brand was recommended. But the gadgetshieldz looks good too.

I primarily use this case, and without getting a ruler out, there is about 1/16" on the top of bottom and about 1/32" on the sides with the stock film. (or as much as the coverage past the screen of the stock film)
Ironically, the first link for topace on amazon is a film, not a glass and the glass product has 1 poor review.

If you mean the official OnePlus case, no, i have not experienced any chipping of the phone after using the official case. Currently used for a month already.

The way they did the curved screen on both OP5 Models made nearly all glass screen protectors on the market not very good at fitting. Even the official ones from Oneplus themselves were whack. I tried loads. Best of a bad bunch were the orzly ones, but even those weren't perfect. The phone itself just makes it impossible.

Yes, from what I had read, the orzly and NILLKIN were the best glass, but the edges were the issue.
I used to have some various cheap glass protectors on my S4 and never had the issues people are noting on the various glass protectors for the 5t - reduced touch sensitivity, rainbow effect, hot spots, etc
Honestly, though I have gotten descent at installing screen protectors, I despise putting them on and getting everything perfect, so I am trying to do as much research before hand, so hopefully I only have to do it once.
I got the OnePlus glass when I got the phone, but read the initial reviews and had planned just to keep the stock film on, as it seemed to be doing a good job until I dropped in in the backyard and damaged the film about 1" down and 1" in from the right.
Sorry if I have hijacked this topic...

Yes, there's definitely no ideal way to do it. This is why I personally prefer the flat screened phones, as they have none of these issues.
Pity in a way that curved screen phones have become a fad this past year. Last decent looking one that I was tempted to get was the Razer Phone for gaming. (That one's completely flat screen, and generally looked like quite a decent smartphone for alot of other reasons too). It's been out for a while though now, and haven't got round to it yet, but I still might. In the meantime, I'll just struggle on with my OnePlus until it dies (or more likely, 'til my screen breaks!) haha
sorry to hear about you dropping yours though,. that must've been harsh. was it just the film that got damaged, or did any of the actual device's screen underneath get hit?

Yea, about 4ft drop when pushing my kids in the swing to the dirt and debris that settled under the leaves (that I had just moved so they could use the swing for the first time this year.
I was trying to take pictures of them and dropped it
I dug my finger under the corner and peeled back the screen protector past the damage and the screen was clear. It's almost like a rock dug up the surface of the film

Phew! That was close! (it's always a bit unsettling when you see the cracks in a screen protector). With protectors also being transparent, at first it often looks like it's gone right through to the actual screen, until the moment of truth when you remove it afterwards.. (I've had a few scares like that in my time! So I feel ya!) But is a satisfying feeling of relief when you pull the protector off and everything looks good as new underneath.
Anyways, glad you got lucky that time aswell! So far so good!
after 2 months my phone is completely ruined by this case. I should have changed the case earlier.
