Google Phone Number Blocking - ASUS ROG Phone 3 Questions & Answers

Has anyone figured out a way to use the block number feature on the google phone app? Asus apparently wants you to use asus contacts as the default phone app to allow number blocking. I have tried debloating Asus Phone & Contact apps and making Google Phone a System Priv App. But the same message still persists. Does anyone have any ideas to get around this restriction?

Blocking Calls

i keep getting spam calls from the same number recently, and I went online to my verizon account to block the number. however, when I tried to apply it, I got an error message saying that I could not block it. interestingly, the system applied the block to my wife's iPhone.
is there an alternative way to block calls aside from a 3rd party app?
thanks!

Some ROMs have that feature built in -- like CM. That's not "3rd party app".

Other than that, I use RCB blocker, but I'm rooted and it's a 3rd party app.
Root Call Blocker Pro

if it was a landline number you could use this service:
https://nomorobo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205761775-What-Phone-Carriers-Are-Supported-
But it doesn't work with cell phones.
finally got it figured out. had to have a chat with VZW and they had to enable "blocking calls and messages" feature on my account. i couldn't do it myself online, only on their end.
What I've done is create a contact called Block, tick the box to send to voicemail, and then set ringtone to none. You can add more than one number to this contact. Naturally this only works for numbers that you can save.
I use this. Works great. Xposed.

Android Messages RCS not working

Hello,
Has anyone swapped to the Google Messages/Android Messages app over the stock Samsung messages app on the S10/S10+ and been able to get RCS working?
I came from a Pixel 3 XL and enjoy the Android Messages app over the Samsung app even with the OneUI overhaul, but I cannot get RCS/Chat working - it is not even visible in advanced settings. If I swap to the Samsung app it sends RCS messages no problem, swap back to Android messages it goes back to SMS/MMS only. I also installed Google Carrier services thinking maybe it needed that to trigger it but nothing, looks like the Carrier services app also does not get triggered to actually provision anything even with it installed.
Would love to hear if anyone has this working
Same issue here. I prefer Android messages since I get a lot of verification codes texted to me and Android messages has a quick copy code option. On TMobile. Rcs works fine on Samsung message app.

I am using T-Mobile and I have not yet had RCS support(waiting for it), but I want to ask, how did you install Google Messages app on your new Samsung phone? Did you transfer your info including apps using Samsung Switch app? If yes, some apps may not have transferred correctly, so I would uninstall them, then reinstall or just try clearing data of that app.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Google Messages a few times, still does not resolve, even installed Google Carrier Services to attempt to fix. Really odd if you cant use a different message client with the same tech.
beep boop
Right now its only supported on the stock Samsung messaging app.

"Messages" is a public app that Google has on the Play Store (just search for 'Messages' and make sure you get the one from Google LLC), and anyone with an Android phone can download it. It's a drop-in SMS/MMS replacement for OEM (or carrier) apps for SMS/MMS.... it also supports RCS, but not on every phone.

And it looks like it may stay that way for a while: For RCS to be shared between apps, the way SMS/MMS are, Google needs to build an API so that different apps could access the same data. It LOOKED like htye were going to do that, but then 9to5Google and others reported that the code was hidden and commented out in the Android Q preview, with comments suggesting that it wouldn't be available till Android R. Lord knows why it's taking Google this many hears to get down basic functionality on something as important as messaging... they've been pushing their RCS Universal Profile since 2016, so it seems ridiculous that it'll be 2020 (for Android R) before they release an API baked into Android for it.
Textra is still my favorite SMS app. I wish Messages and Samsung Messages would implement their quick reply features
It works for me sending messages to my parents who are on Sprint with me using the Google Messages app. I'm pretty sure they are using the default Samsung messages app but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
Not exactly the same but worth a mention...Verzion S10- has Real Time Text (RTT) working..you enable this from the stock phone dialer screen, three dots at the top right for Settings > Real Time Text. You can set it to always on and you'll get the additional option to send an RTT type message call whenever you click a contact.

google search widget doesn't display contacts

Used to be able to search contacts through the search bar. It also provided smart results by showing people that I actually call if I had multiple contacts with same first name. Looks like google turned off the feature with android 11 update. I was able to keep the functionality previously by uninstalling the updates on the "google" app. But it doesn't look like it works anymore. It's so annoying not be able to do it.
Does anyone know how to get the feature back?

Question RCS not working verizon S21 ultra

So I used smart switch and copied my pixel 4 over to my s21 ultra everything worked fine rcs using the Google message app. Had to get a replacement s21 (wouldn't hold a signal) after transferring from old s21 to the new s21 rcs stopped working and now when I enable chat in Google message it hangs on verifying phone number and doesn't do anything in samsung messages. Anyone have this working on verizon?
That's the same issue I ran into. What worked for me was to uninstall the app. Switch your default back to the same sing app or Verizon Messaging app. I redownloading the Google messaging app and made it my default. I activated the chat features and let it do it's own thing. For me after about 5-6 hours the servers confirmed and I was able to use RCS functionality.
Also in Settings, wifi, more connections I be set up a private dns; the same one I was using on my pixel.... dns.google

Do you have carrier services installed?
Yes I do
Mine just sticks at trying to verify phone number
Been going crazy for 3 days trying everything from here to next Sunday! I read what dude said about uninstalling and going back to Verizon messaging app as default and reinstall Google messages and then make it your default again and it worked right away without a hitch! Thanks so much was going ****ing crazy!

Pixel 5 call blocking?

Hello is it possible to block incoming calls unless in my contact list. I have tried the do not disturb function and it still shows the number who called in my call log. Is there a way to block it so it just doesn't ring or go to voicemail or show in my call log. Spam calls getting annoying now thanks in advance
@Pixel5xD Sounds much like the old Call/Message block that I recall when I was using the SG3/SG4.
May need to try a 3rd party application to achieve this on Pixel, but I can't say for sure::
call/message block - Android Apps on Google Play

I know this is a few months old, but I've been using Calls Blacklist Pro and it does exactly what you're asking. I needed something like the old CM dialer that blocked anything not in my contacts list. I've tried just about everything out there and this is the only one that really works for me.

The app hasn't been updated in 2 years and spammers have found a way around it. I've found I don't get as many with the native Google dialer block but I still get some. The good thing is I now have a brand new warranty for my car that I sold 3 years ago. In the description is says you can block any number after they call. That is pointless since you will never get a repeat caller, they just move to the next number on their list. The new government protocol is useless too, they've gotten around that as well. I do wish they would have a global block like (area code)+first 3 digits of your phone number. Nonetheless, I'm down to about one or two a day from 10 previously.

I'm still using the app and I have never gotten a spam call because I block everything that isn't on my contacts list. That was the point of the thread. He was looking for something that blocked everything but the contacts.

I get that. But look at the reviews saying it doesn't work any longer. Non contact calls still getting through. They need to update the app I believe.
edit: does the native spam blocker in the dialer not work with contacts only? I do wish there was an option that spam gets a "this is not a working number" message instead of ringing silently or screening. I also think a global block like (620) - 345* would be a good thing since many calls are spoofed from my area code + my first 3 numbers.
Lastly to the OP @Pixel5xD How do you handle calls from businesses or medical offices not on your contact list? If those get blocked and don't even screen you must miss a lot of appointments.
In the Phone app, go to Settings > Spam and Call Screen > Call Screen. Enable "automatically screen" or "Silently decline" for spam, possibly faked numbers, first time callers, and private/hidden. The only calls that should come through are your contacts or numbers that have called before. When the Assistant is screening a call, remember to use the "Block/Report Spam" option on numbers you don't want to get repeat calls from.
