I removed both cameras on the first day I got my Diamond. I've been looking through the service manual before and felt primed.
Beforehand I want to tell you I did this already to my Magician and my Hermes - easy like swinging compared to the following.
After nearly 2h everything was put together again (I spare you the dirty and sweaty details). Before I switched on again I already thought about posting here something like "don't do it... it's cumbersome". Ok, then I switched on.
Booting up just fine . Since I touched those sensitive antennae cables I tried my SIM-PIN, works. WLAN & BT, works. Navi (GPS) no signal!
During the next tremulous 4h I tried "everything". Cutting it short: there was a conducting patch grounding the GPS antenna cable . I pushed that cable 5nm (there's actually no room left within the housing - as long as the cameras are still in) below and it all worked again.
To sum it up: don't do it! I mean it: DON'T DO IT. If you're a reckless person - seek some other "joy".
Why am I posting in ROM dev.: Maybe someone has too much time and wants to save me some storage space and wants to cook me a ROM without camera stuff OR someone is in need of a tester for special software (e.g. 1st torch software for Magician needed the camera, my own software later on didn't need a camera and was much more lean and fast).
PS: If you still wonder why I actually did that -> company policy.
Dont know if i should laugh or cry... or go to bed -.-
Couldn't you just spray paint over the camera lenses or put scotch tape on them?
I don't know what to say... other than WTF!
@techdave: You'll be asked "R U carrying a camera-cellphone with U?" at the plant entrance. If the camera is "only" blinded they could get nitpicking and say there still is a camera. But I can "lordly" answer "No".

Haha only temporarily, he can put them back when he quits because he gets sick of a Diamond with no camera.
@racerx_: Don't exaggerate. It's neither that expensive nor is it maimed (luckily). There's been always little use for these cheap CMOS sensors for me.
hey, do your company guards know that you can bring your cameras in separate pocket and then reassemble it back at the facility? ;-)
Carrying the cameras would violate company policies itself - no matter whether in conjunction with a suitable device or not. Technically you'd also bring a USB-Cam, LAN-Cam and whatever cam.
I've got nothing more than a usual cell phone with added holes. Would this be violating? Almost every cell phone has got bluetooth capability. So what about bluetooth cams? Ooops. Is every (BT-)phone now violating the above policy?
What are you on man? Whatever it is its kicking in awesome.

I guess the policy is not to carry cameras, otherwise the policy would probably have been not to carry any communication device. Carrying a device with holes but with no camera's would be acceptable then. If not, you'd also have to remove the BT and the WiFi, since there are probably cameras out there that can communicate with BT or WiFi. If you are going to remove that, please take pictures (if you still can without the camera)? LOL
How did you move the GPS grounding cable a stunning distance of 5 nm? Is that cable fixed enough not to vibrate back while using the device?
I must say, I should go to sleep, did not cry, but felt a joy while reading your thread. Nice one! Thanx
Can we put a third camera on Diamond ?
Some pictures pls! Thanks!

That was my argument already! If BT and/or Wifi are allowed, then should be mine as well.

Well, 5nm were of course disproportionate. But yes, the cable is bendable. Although I wouldn't push it more than needed. Till now it didn't resume position because my device still knows where it is (although I don't know all the time).

I'll see what I can do. But I'm not gonna dismantle my baby again (unless I'm forced to).
I would be lucky if we were allowed to use phones with *removed* cameras. We have to prove, that it was a cameraless device from the beginning (like in: go to shop, buy without camera). Not sure if there's a official (i.e. AT&T) version of the diamond without camera.
(oh, and I regularly disassemble my smartphones when they get sick, nothing to worry about)
i demand pictures! ...so where do you work? BAHAHHA

So United has a horrible Lost and found system. I called them less then 30 minutes after walking off the plane. I wanted someone to walk to my seat and physically grab it. Since i was near the rear of the plane and the last one out of my row im pretty sure no other passenger would of grabbed it. All they could do is basically tell me to report it on the website and i "might" get a call. The thing is I know and have talked to a few flight attendants and it seems like a lot of the time there co-workers hide the stuff and keep it for themself. So instead of united actually doing a physical check it is pretty much as good as gone at this point. I really have no faith i will get it back. It was a flawless N7 16gb too!. Doubt I will buy a new one to replace it even though i really loved the device, I just have too much other things going on to afford it atm. So if I dont get a call/email in the next few days, it was nice being a part of these forums and loved the vibe here.
That sucks. Hope you able to get it back. Good luck!
This reminds me when I lost my old GBA case on a plane. It had so many good games in there, and the GBA itself. I still had my SP case though, that had the SP and games as well, so I didn't lose everything.
I miss you Nightmare in Dreamland.
Anyway, sorry to hear about losing your Nexus.
omg that is so sad. i almost cried reading your post.. I would hate to loose mine right now . It will come in handy starting next week. Wed i have to have a bicep tendon surgery..
boohooo
i so hope they do the honest thing and get it back to you
Get a case or sleeve that you can tether to your bag, belt, etc. Also, Case Logic LNE07 comes in red so it's hard to visually miss it.

United Airlines is the worst. From the most cramped planes with the worst seats in the industry, to the worst customer service there is. I used to fly Continental exclusively, but since the merger, no more. Good luck.
Any chance you had Lookout or some other tracking service installed? Sucks man. My wife is a flight attendant and she has turned in several Kindle's and what-not in, so perhaps there is a chance. Best of luck!

You never know, I found someone's kindle on a Southwest flight and took it right up to the counter. They said they had already hear from the passenger and knew whose it was. Messing with other people's gadgets is bad mojo.

Can you tell if it's still at the airport? If yes, that is a very good sign that it's probably been turned in (and someone turned it on and connected to wifi...but lets hope that was in an effort to identify you for good reasons). If it pops up online anywhere outside of the airport...it's pretty much gone. Hopefully you changed all your passwords to all your accounts too...notified any credit cards you have tied to any of those accounts, etc.

If you bought it with a credit card you might have some buyer protection like, replacement for stolen or broken items. I buy everything with American express, I have a 90 day window in which they will replace if lost, stolen, broken, etc.... Plus they extend any warranty an additional year...
Visa has something like this on a few of the cards...

you need to input your passcode anyway, unless you have it stored in your tablet for someone to find out
I am really surprised that Google doesn't have an easy way to register our devices. Every Android device has numbers associated with it that can't be changed. The MAC addresses for both the WiFi and Bluetooth interfaces are unique, so every device that has either of these radios could be identified. It should be part of the OS that these tablets can't install any software if the registered owner reports it lost or stolen. If the device has cameras, a picture should be taken when it's connected to the internet. These pictures could be retrieved when a valid case number or subpoena is provided. At least a warning should appear on the tablet saying it has been reported lost or stolen. Make it a pain to use a misappropriated tablet.
Yes, I know there are programs out there that do this for you, but they are easily circumvented by doing a full factory reset of the device. Come on Google! Take a bite out of crime!

Someone on another thread said that somebody sold them a Nexus 7 that was apparently known to Google as stolen, and I guess Play access was disabled or something, I don't know the exact details though...
An app is only easily removed if it is loaded as a user app. If it is am system app a standard reset went be enough. On the other hand maybe they will be smart enough to take it further.

A very similar thing happened to me on a BA flight inbound to heathrow years ago. On that occasion i left a case containing some sennheiser noise cancelling headphones and an ipod nano in the seat pocket. I realized just a short distance from the gate and went back but they wouldn't let me back on. They never found for me either. I was eventually told that "I think someone has add it mate".

I have my devices set to take front and rear photos on evey boot and on multiple incorrect passcodes which are uploaded staight to dropbox and google plus. They also text each other with gps coordinates on every boot. Again, this is only useful if the thief doesn't factory reset or flash a new rom.
I wonder if devs could implement a passcode for cwm et al to secure the flashing process?

This was discussed before but i think they said they couldn't because it could lock you out of your device
Slate on a plane!!
Sorry, just had too
I read on Google's help pages that they can remotely lock a device so might be worth calling them. If someone can't use it they might put it back in lost property or something.
So after less than two weeks with my brand new device, the S-Pen stopped working (from one day to another). The phone recognizes it when I take it off, but soon after I hover it on the screen, starts interacting with it. It's like putting a piece of tape on the S-Pen tip and trying to write with it. Air Command doesn't work, neither the little circle that appears when you put the S-Pen close to the screen. I bought a $1000 device and now the most important/marketed feature stops working. What should I do? I've imported it so I don't have any warranty other than the one Seller gave to me (which now he's saying that the SPen is an accessory and it's not covered by their warranty).

I see in your sig you've had other Notes, do you still have any of them? Try the Spen from one of your older Notes & see if it works. They are compatible, just be sure to take the Spen out of the Note 8 first, unless you have Spen Power Saver turned off, or the Spen won't work. That will tell you if you simply have a defective Spen or not. Although I've never had an Spen go bad, it is possible, hopefully it's just the Spen.
I had the same issue with my note 7, after 1 week the s pen started to behave erratic, I tried the s pen of my note 4, and it worked fine, as the note 7 was recalled and I did not want to surrender it, I bought another s pen, case solved, try with another s pen from another device, if you can not claim warranty, get another s pen, I have seen them for some 25-40 dollars

That's the first thing I've did. Even the first gen S-pen works fine. The phone works perfectly. I've also tested the 8's pen with the other devices and it also had issues. Luckly, the problem is the pen. Unfortunately, it's near impossible to get a new one in Argentina

Yup, the main problem is that I'm unable to find the original pen here in my country, only knockoffs. I need to import it from the States, which is a pain in the ass and I don't meet the requirements to do such a thing. I guess I need to ask to some friends if they would import it for me. The worst thing is that I need to bother a lot of people to get a fix for a thousand dollars phone. I just can't believe it..

Well at least it's just the Spen & not the phone. Yeah that sucks how Argentina banned online international purchases. I used to forward stuff to someone I knew in Argentina but even he got hit with duty fees even though I declare as gift. For my buddies in the EU they rarely got hit with duties.
Is it possible to purchase one through Samsung in Argentina, like is there a Samsung store there?
If worse comes to worse I can offer to purchase one & forward to you but shipping costs might not be worth it even if you can get one there for more than what it should originally cost.

Right now the seller says that he's awaiting response from his provider, I hope they'll give it to me without charge. There's a Samsung Store here, and they even promote the Note 8. But they don't even have a case for it so I doubt they would have an S-Pen, but I'll contact them if my seller doesn't have one. As you said, even as a "gift", you can't import anything without having Grade 3 tributary (or taxpaying?) identification code, named CUIT here. As I'm a student, I don't have one yet so It's impossible to me to get things outside of my country. Thankfully the situation is different than two years ago (even with that code, you wouldn't be able to import anything). I really appreciate your intention btw!

That's the second thing I did. I've tried all the 6 tips and none of them made a difference. Heck even without the tip is still malfunctioning. It's like something being stuck inside, but that's impossible since I didn't replaced the tip since the day I bought it.
why don't you try and go down to the Samsung store there and show them the problem, if you do that and are polite about it they might just organise a new pen for you

I may have to contact Samsung here, but I'm pretty sure that the pen would cost me up to $150 if I get it from Samsung Argentina.

I'm not using any case with a magnet, I'm using a silicone case.

Fun fact is that my device now won't recognize if the S Pen is inside, resulting in a heavy battery drain and a constant alarm saying that I've lost the S-Pen. Same thing happened with the Note 5 when you broke the internal switch by inserting the Pen backwards. The thing is, now I don't know if the problem is the S Pen only, or the S Pen/Note combo. So now I really need a little help here:
I want to know how does the device recognizes the pen inside: is it a mechanical switch like older Notes, or an electronic sensor?. If it's mechanical/physical switch, then I'm done. It's broke, forever. If it's a sensor, it may stopped detecting the Pen because the pencil itself is broken, so If I replace the Pen only, it should be good.
I've seen JerryRigEverything's video about how Samsung made the Note 7 waterproof. Since the N8 S-Pen is the same as the N7 one, I came to the conclusion that the S-Pen holder is the same too. As you can see in this video at 3:19 mark, there isn't any plastic switch, but there's a cable coming from the upper part that snaps on the motherboard. I'm assuming that's the sensor. If I'm right, then my device is fine as I wouldn't be able to break that sensor. I don't know. I'll have to try a new S Pen and see what happens..

Man that sucks, stupid laws that keep changing! I'd be furious if the US had laws like that!
Do you have Spen Power Saver turned on?

Doesn't make any difference. Sadly it's a hardware issue.
So before you ask me this is not my S Pen I saw this on Twitter.
Do you think the Pen just broke like this or was damaged by the user? Has anyone had any issues with their S Pen (such as breaking or the end coming off)?
Uh oh, I sure hope this isn't a common thing. I just started messing around with all the new things the S pen can do. This makes me nerveous to even pull it out.
never had a issue with a s-pen more than likely user error
Learn how to use it properly.
I have been drawing and using it for almost 2 weeks now, it works like a charm.

Not trying to bother anyone I dont believe the Pen just breaks like that and that's why I asked I wanted to know if anyone else experienced issues with a brittle S Pen

didn't want to pass as being harsh but social media as being a source of information should be taken lightly. smear campaigns are common espeatially near launch day.

point taken.
I work in a national carrier phone store, and our demo model Note 9 was installed by our inventory manager. The S-pen broke while she was installing the display, it snapped the clicker off.

How? For that to have happened the S Pen would have had to been sticking out and then obviously of it gets hit it could snap off
Just Happened to me too
Just happened to me too,I can see this happening pretty easily. The end has a very thin plastic housing for a part that gets a moderate amount of tension. Broke off for me with almost no effort. I called Samsung and they denied a replacement since it is physical damage. $50 for a new one.

Pull yourself together for goodness sake! S-pens have been around for years and are well made though like all such tech will break if abused.
Knee jerk reactions to nothing....
Ryland
Might be a very random thing. I have used the spen alot, mainly testing screen protectors and fooling around with the new features. My spen is still solid. I have dropped a few times as well.
Sent from my Samsung SM-N960U1 using XDA Labs
S-Pen is very solid. Our last display for the Note 8, someone snapped the S-pen clicker off that one too. So it's probably just spiteful thing. Customers being customers.
Same thing happened to mine yesterday while I was trying to pull it out of the phone. The rest of the pen got stuck inside the phone. I tried putting the top back on and now it won't pop out at all. Any suggestions on how to get it out? Thinking of leaving in there until I can order another one. Smh.

Update, Samsung offered a free replacement. They sent me a shipping label to return the broken one.
.....Nope
I had several Note devices and not once have I replaced a S pen, I haven't switched out the tip. Not sure how you could damage it anyway besides the obvious. It feels light enough why incredible Hulk it ??
Mine broke after 3 days...
It was a little wobbly out of the box. Didn't think much of it. I've had all Notes since the 2, never had one break on me and used them each for over a year. On day 3 of the Note 9, I was just using my ginger nail to pull it out and it just fell off. Wasn't using much pressure. I take care of my electronics. I went to you YouTube and saw that it had happened to others. One guy stated that he contacted Verizon and they sent him a new one. I called AT&T. It wasn't as easy as his, but after a few trys and calling Samsung directly, AT&T gave me a 50 dollar credit. The actual cost was 54 with taxes, but it was close enough. I'm just worried that this is going to be an ongoing thing. Samsung was great and offered to fix it immediately (they sent a box with return postage) but said the carrier should have fixed it with no issues. So. I called AT&T again and this time they took care of it. They wanted to replace the whole phone, but I didn't want to go through setting it up again and asked for a credit. They agreed and I had a new one in about 4 days or so.
Just happened to me now, device is only 24 hours in hand purchased from Samsung. Anyone else get a free replacement from samsung?
Greetings
Would you recommend buying this phone in 2020 for >200 bugs?
Also are you using the unofficial LineageOS port or a Generic System Image? If the latter, which one?
Depends what kind of currency your bugs are.
We used to trade with squirrelskins hundreds of years ago, but now with money this seems a bit old fashioned.. [emoji16]

Ok. "Bucks" is usually USD.
I love the phone, so 200 EUR for a brand new phone sold by a store seems as an OK price to me. You get 2 years of warranty if you live in an EU country.

you using any of the mentioned custom software?
Over 200 bucks? Nah. I would say the price for this phone should be around 150. Try to get it used. I got mine used for 170€. It's a very good phone and works flawlessly. It misses some features of even older phones though, such as the night mode filter or a built in firewall. Mine still has a few months of warranty left, when it's over I will root it and then it will be perfect.
Only gripes I have with it:
>no soft touch buttons (like the OnePlus3 despite the bezel being huge), I hate the on screen navbar and on a small screen like this it's even more annoying
>fingerprint reader and power key are the same and the phone doesn't have double tap to wake, this means you have to do some finger wizardry every time to just turn on the screen without also unlocking every time
I use Wave up and am complete fine with it

If it is a truly compact phone you want with good battery life and a headphone jack then you cannot go wrong here.
But don't expect wonders from the camera.
I have been using LOS 17.1 for a while and it's been running smooth, but now that Havoc OS has been updated I will be switching over to it.

Custom Navigation Bar app works well for hiding the navigation bar
Looking for something that lasts long
My "recent history" is
SM galaxy s II, i sold a ruined by time one and the second was ruined and could not be resurrected in rice, after I was thrown over board by a pirate. I am not donkey kong, the real one is donekykong123 (already taken name), but the rest is true.
SM note 3 abandoned, just fell for the 100th time and unfortunately this time from the top of the car broke the screen yesterday.
I just found out that both have been supported from you ppl, you are ***** great.
I am not looking to take pics (ok night pics are cool but whatever!), i watch videos, i don't use social but twitter, no what app. I don't like being denied to download an app because I guess my system is not compatible (the android not being up to it usually is the cause), I dnt like at all the finger print, eye scanning and all these data extraction privacy break normalization things.
I want a 12 cm phone with cool shape.
If battery is interchangable and I have 4 RAM (as far as I informed myself) we are on top!
I am really struggling searching for something as I ve become kind of picky, but I also found that producers just make this stuff in serie all the same cost cutting trash forcing people to have phone in their hand and buying one every 1\2 year (I DEEPLY and BEASTLY hate this). Nature comes first than economy or consumerism
Now, sorry for saying this stuff, I am just trying to understand if this now abandoned Sony serie is good, (hard to find) but I saw that Serie x 1 and 5 will be supported (I dnt understand if this is a big problem really for a person that wants to buy something that will use for other 5 years AT LEAST).
I know that people are not accustomed to long posts. Sorry if it feels egocentrical, and disrespectful.
I cannot target a good model, I also saw as I like "mil-spec" stuff the ulephone but I saw that it's mostly just "america marketing" (no disprespect) they break anyway fast. I heard that motorola is something to check.
I like Sony since u know "the italians".. "the japanese"... they do it good, and i like the "motto" not for those that care for measure but for quality that this phone has, also because I am donkey kong and I dnt have measure concerns.
Now... I definitely have pockets as everybody else, I hate keeping these sterilizing tools in my pockets and knowing they look like Peace makers and feeling like I have a house in my front or back pocket (where u can also break the screen from I heard) is exactly what I want to avoid to have...
I am a EU south individual and we care a lot about style and also about practicality\pragmatism even if my post doesn't sound like this.
I posted below the OP thread because I think this is the perfect place to go deeper in this question\quest...
Thanks

I am also wondering inside my search for the perfect small phone, i don't need a tablet pushed inside my pockets, how can it be an ok buy if the software is abandoned by Sony : as notebookcheck.net/Official-Sony-Android-10-update-roadmap-confirms-that-the-Xperia-XZ1-phones-have-now-been-abandoned
Is it ok anyway?
I am the first to support also when all SELL, but look at this too: how can people tell you to buy it anyway? I understand one is buying the hardware, but also somehow the software and the mother house is important when one buys a phone: I remember when buying windows phone, I never made a worse suggestion to a person telling to buy it... it was trash.

This phone is definitely worth it considering the size and specs. I paid 60 dollars for mine used on eBay, I made an offer and it was accepted.

Recently sold my Xperia XZ because there was almost no usable custom software and I don't want to be stuck with Google spyware/ outdated stock rom.
Using my old z1 compact again and it's totally fine. - pretty much only using it as music player. I can get over the not so great camera.
XZ1c is quite expensive. Really hard to get nowadays. But it is the only quite recent phone on the market that is not complete trash. Maybe it will get cheaper with time. Then I might buy one. Right now this 6 year old phone is more than enough.

That's nice . The cheapest I could find was some 170 or something. Not acceptable for a relatively old phone in my opinion, considering how cheap they've become.
