Saving ROM before flashing - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Yes I am a newbie and have read all the tutorials and feel confidant in flashing a new OS, but what I can't figure out is how to save the OS on my Wizard before I flash so I have it to revert back to. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

If you are using a G3 Wizard, first unlock it, then get a >=128MB MiniSD and use mtty for a complete backup.
If that is a G4, use Wizard Service Tool to backup or restore OS ROM.

Great, thanks so much for your help! Will that backup the OS and radio files?

The mtty methods backup the whole thing (IPL, SPL, Radio, OS and ExtROM, depends on what parameter you passes to r2sd command)
Actually, backing up Radio is not that vital because you can always flash any Radio ROM for Wizard.

Upgrade of K-JAM

Hi,
I only recently got a K-JAM (Sim free, but I have it working on Vodafone IRL).
The ROM versions are:
1.1.9.3 9/16/5), 1.01.10, 4.0.13.16, 1.1.9.106
Can I upgrade to the latest Qtek ROM?
Is it worth upgrading?
Whats the full procedure?
I read some of the other threads but they digress into other confusing topics....

step 3)
<b - Backup OS ROM from device>

Thanks, I tried that, got lots of errors (Can't find path') on options e and u. However, the last line to appear says DONE! so maybe it worked.
Where does the file lock_backup.bin get created?
Anyway, the RUU updater crashes shortly after starting the upgrade which requires a hard reset of the device.

How can I eventually reflash my original CID with lock_backup.bin?
(In case of warranty need)
Do I need to unlock CID first before Backing up my ROM and Extended ROM?
Then, if anything goes wrong in future with a ROM/EXTENDED_ROM update, can I just restore my original backups and everything will be fine?

Youre right!
1)Enable RAPI
2)unlock CID
3)Backup
4)Flash (the best with a shipped ROM)
Where can I find the lock_backup.bin file once its created?

Full ROM Backup

Hi All!
I'm newbie here. Please, don't beat me for my question .
I've got Qtek 9100, and now want to play with ROM. BUT! I read a lot of here, and haven't found the Full ROM Backup programm. Is it possible? Or, the only way to backup my original ROM partly, using aWizard?
Thanks for any help.
The aWizard tools do Backup all of the rom except bootloader.
BUT: The ExtROM is backuped in single files which is a problem when you want to insert the ExtROM back into the Wizard: because with the newer ROMs (1.6.x) the ExtROM can only be made visible (and stays read-only).
full rom backup
addr You can backup full ROM to SD card, and then to your PC.
Click my signature to get the tool.
Ah, great!
That's the very thing i was looking for!
Thanks Button!

Sorry, it was a bug in my command file, so CID-unlocking was failed.
Now everything works fine. Please, re-download the tool (click my signature).
I tried using your backup for my ROM, because I was going to upgrade. I'm definitely a newbie at ROM upgrading and backing up...
After running the backup utility, my Qtek won't see my mini-sd card anymore. Do you know how I can make it see my card again? Did the process reformat my card or is there another problem?
Thanks!

the data backup in your mini-sd-card is not FAT compliant. but it's OK for restoring using Qtek's rom-flash procedure.
in another way, you can use tools like WinHex to view, edit or save your mini-SD to a PC as a raw binary file.

If you have already saved your ROM image to PC (myrom.bin file), you can format SD card, and use it as always.
Um, I have a noobie question as well...
Will a full ROM backup take a backup up of everything installed after being shipped from the manufacturer, i.e. programs, reg settings etc., or will it only backup the basic ROM and extended ROM, i.e. what you're left with when you hard reset your device?
the_invisigoth Yes, only ROM, not installed apps.
Hi Button,
Does your program backup the whole ROM (ie OS + Extended) or just the OS??
Is there a way to backup the OS only so that I can backup the latest Qtek OS part only. Reload my T-mobile extended ROM then restore the Qtek OS only ROM, giving me the latest OS with my T-mobile customisation??
Cheers

It backups Full ROM = OS+ExR+Radio+SPL/IPL+Splash..
Use aWizard to backup your ROM partly.
I needed Button's program before I updated to 2.8.7. I have a cingular 8125 I upgraded to 2.8.7 it overwrote my extended ROM, when I flashed everything back from awizard I relaized my extended ROM was not restored, so I flashed to 1.5.4 so I could access the extended ROM, but it downgraded my IPL and SPL to 1.?? from 2.??. So once I restored my extended ROM in 1.5.4 I upgraded just the OS to 1.8.11 from my original backup, and now when I do a hardreset it locks up during extended ROM installation. Unless I can find a way to edit the extended ROM on 2.8.7 I wont be able to restore my unit to original specs. Unless someone uses Buttons program on a Cingular 8125 and uploads it somewhere for me. I am gonna return this unit to frys and purchase it at the cingular store for a bit cheaper price. So I was hoping to restore it to orignal specs so the next helpless frys customer dosent get stuck wth a funky unit. Thanks all!
@Button,
would this method allow me to replace my 8125 to its original state including the bootloader flash screen ? i am needing to put my 8125 to its original state prior to returning.
I have a new 8125 that i could take a backup of and want to load it onto the one that i am returning. would this work ? thank you
Yes it should work.
Button,
does your program also perform restoral of ROM and all its content from the backup it's made ?
thanks for your help.

It can backup only 'clear' ROM, without programms that you have installed manually.
THANK YOU BUTTON !!!!
I was able to FULLY RESTORE my Cingular 8125 to its OEM Spec including the first boot splash screen !!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
I spoke too soon.
Here's what happens...
After 8125 has been booted up, on the screen it says, "Data Crashes. Please contact your service Provider". And if you see on the top left corner, it says SIM LOCK. It will not let me reload the image again from the SD card from the bootloader. When I press the Voice Dial, it says, No Update Allow!.
I've tried to run the aWizard and Lokitz tool to unlock again but to no avail.
Have you seen thsi before ?
First, try to flash an old rom (from bootloader mode), - run any ruu. Then, unlock SIM and CID, if it is need. And then use SD card to restore your original rom.

aWizard and 2.8.7.102 Rom

Hi,
I'm kinda stuck here and maybe someone know what I'm missing here.
I downloaded the 2.8.7.102 WWE Rom and installed it without any problems. I used aWizard to backup the OS and reverted back to the Qtek_9100_RUU_Prodigy_10107105_Qtek_WWE Rom and modified the Extended_ROM to my likings. I tried to use aWizard to restore the 2.8.7.102 OS for several times now (without problems or errors) but it always hangs at the splashscreen so I have to restore a RUU Rom again to get my device to boot again.
What am I doing wrong?
Is what I want possible?
Thanks in advance on any help
Cheers,
Cacti

I have tested what you want to do in my Wizard and success without any problem.
Please make sure you have unlock CID using 'u' and enabel RAPI using 'e' option.
Hey Cactus,
Did you get an error while flashing your device or is it when you are restarting it after flashing?
Have seen it with mine that during the first steps of the flash I got this error but when I flashed it on another computer everything went fine.
Cheers,
Drifter
Drifter dude!!! Whazup
No errors when I run the RUU Rom and no errors when I use aWizard. But it hangs at the splash screen.
I did enable RAPI and I CID unlocked it also (although I'm sure you only need to do that once) but still no go. I reverted back to the RUU_Prodigy_1060204_105_11210_TMO_UK_Ship OS.
I can't stand that it's not working so I ran the RUU with the test ROM again and used aWizard to extract the OS rom again. You never know, it may have gone wrong the first time, but still no go. I was able to restore it's Radio Rom fine but not the OS part. Bummer!
Oh well, seems I need to be patient and wait till someone figures out how to unlock the locked Extended_ROM from newer roms.
Cheers

sorry you're having problems. The silver lining is that you can revert back from the 2.8.7.102 rom. Now, I feel comfortable trying 2.8.7.102, since i can go back.
Sorry Cactus, cant help you with this one.
If you have removed CID and simlock you shouldn't have any problems updating the firmware.
Did you try the update with another computer with a clean ActiveSync?
Someone else with a suggestion about this problem?

How can I COMPLETELY backup my factory ROM?

Hi,
I want to upgrade my Wizard to WM6 but want to backup/save my original factory rom, the one that came with the phone when I bought it aka the one that Cingular installed just in case I need to revert. I looked everywhere for this issue before posting but did not find a clear answer. I saw that you can backup to mini SD but once again, the instructions were not clear. What I essentially want to do is, backup the original ROM and in case I do not like one of the WM6 roms (hard to believe), I would revert back to the original rom. Can anyone out there provide a clear answer and if so, provide instructions? I know some people have done it with something called "mtty" but I have no knowledge of this program and therefore, do not know how to use it. Thanks in advance for your time and your help!!
If you dont understand how to use MTTY to backup your rom to sd card, then simply go onto the cingular site and download the rom for your device.
Then backup all your data with active sync(XP) or Windows mobile device center(VISTA). Install Sprite backup and use it to backup all data on your phone. it will be a trial version, but it enables you to make backups and restore them, even when the trial has expired you can still restore the backups you just cant make any more new backups unless you buy it.
then make sure your device is cid unlocked and download the WM6 rom you want to try and flash it, if you dont like WM6 you can reinstall the cingular rom and restore the backup you made using sprint backup.
Major note You CANNOT restore a FULL backup that you made from your cingular rom onto the WM6 rom, if you do, the device wont boot and you will have to reflash again.
You can restore a partial backup though ,of say your messages and PIM data and any files in my documents but do not try to restore the windows files.
Hope this helps
Oh i forgot to mention, it is a Pain in the arse trying to flash cooked roms in Vista, so if you have Vista i would recommend using an XP machine to flash, flashing original roms works fine in Vista though
I see, thanks for answering man. That helps.

[Q] hardSpl and backup

hihi, some question about Hard spl
Assuming that I'm already flash Hard spl and a cook ROM installed,
1. if i wanna get back to ROM and data backup-ed data by sprint mobile backup, what are that step that i should follow? Do i need to flash original HTC ROM and radio, re-flash HTC spl, then restore using sprint mobile backup?
2. Can original HTC ROM operate on Hard spl ?( on some proprietary phone using different spl with original ROM will turn the phone into brick, just asking to confirm )
3. If for warranty reason, i reflash HTC spl, the next time i wanna install a cook rom, is there a need to flash Hard spl again ?
About windows and ROM
Which version of winMo offer better memory management? 6.5.x, x mean 1/3/5 ? The current 6.5 need to be restart every 1/2 days.
Thanks for looking through my question

-If you've backed up your data from a specific stock ROM, only restore your system data to the same ROM. PIM data can be restored to any ROM.
-Stock ROM will automaitcally reflash your radio as well.
-There is no need to flash back to SSPL unless you are returning for warranty.
-If its for a warranty return, you flash back to stock ROM, flash SSPL, then restore your data.
2. Can original HTC ROM operate on Hard spl ?( on some proprietary phone using different spl with original ROM will turn the phone into brick, just asking to confirm )
-Stock ROMs can operate on HSPL, however if it is an older ROM, you want to downgrade your HSPL from 2.51 to 1.83.
3. If for warranty reason, i reflash HTC spl, the next time i wanna install a cook rom, is there a need to flash Hard spl again ?
-If you flash SSPL, you would have flash HSPL again to flash a cooked ROM.

-Most cooked ROMs are optimized for best memory management regardless of the version. You can also get a memory management app, such as ClearTemp or Memaid.
