Loose D-Pad - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have searched for this but only seem to be able to find one reference to it but no replies so maybe Im the only one......
I have had my Kaiser for a bout a month - not used extensively yet but noticed only a few days ago that the D-Pad is loose in its seating - it appears to be excessively so and "wiggles" quite a lot.
either this is just me...or being new to HTC, its normal. Can anyone confirm/deny
thanks

Mine is loose too...

Mine too, and was loose from day one...

noticed mine yesterday too... could see the led on it
Might open it over the weekend to see if its a case of tightning or adding something to the keys to mak e it tighter

I also thought i was the only one, been like that since unboxing, it's looseness is kind of annoying

Noticed mine after about a week, and also two more which were literally just out of the box.
It's annoying, but I'm prepared to live with it. Form wise it's one of the better build qualities and I'm still generally over the moon with it. Just wish it ran like an iphone! bought someone an ipod touch the other day and man it's so damn pretty!! I just kept telling myself that my phone does all the iphone does and more, UI wise it's just a little more plain-jane hehe.
Ant

the tytn ii is way better than iphone; better everything - no-one should need to tell you that
iphone is a girly phone. all it does is look pretty
apart from d-pad, im very chuffed with mine. also now running pocketmusic 5 on it and that makes it as good a music player.

Mine is loose too, but i just kind of got used to it.
it does seem like some of the shiny finish is starting to chip off though. that annoys me a bit more.

I had to send my tytn II off for repair due to another issue. Calls/texts would not work while in 3g areas. Anyways I got the phone back and noticed this aswell about the d-pad, but I wasnt sure if it was like that before I send it off. But I really notice it now and it annoys me, all in all tho apart from that its a fantasic phone. Glad I not the only one with this problem.

i notied mine is lose to this week ...

Ok, this loose d-pad issue was raised before and it is not a problem. All TyTn IIs have about 1mm of play. The d-pad has a "lip" which is seated under the front bezel. It will not fall out and it is a standard part of the design - just ignore it it does not cause problems.

The "looseness" is part of the design. The D-pad is subjected to finger pressure all the time it is used, it is expected to have some free-play movement.

My d-pad has also this kind of "looseness"
But this is very strange because this looseness is only on the left side of the d-pad. It seems to me that something has been broken!
Melkor

I've got the same problem.
I solved it with a small piece of screenprotector which I placed on top of the d-pad beneath the edge.

Noticed that the first thing I took it out of the box. Not a big deal to me.

No it's not broken. What is unusual is that yours only slides about on one side - most slide around all round (slightly more on top / bottom edges. I think if you tried a little more force it would slide all round. It really is not a fault and not a problem. (the pad merely sits on top of the actual switches and is not connected to them - so the movement is of no consequence)
Mike

Yeah, that's normal, mine too... This is the new HTC quality ...
Really, this device sucks !!!!!!!!!!!
- Not good for gaming
- Not good for playing videos
- Bad quality D-pad
- Keyboard not very good (worse than the original TYTN one) from my point of view
And all of that for around 700 € ... !!!!
Anyone who want to buy a new pocket pc, please think twice before choosing the Kai-**** !
The more I use it, the more I hate it ... I have it for about two weeks now and I still prefere to use my HTC prophet !

Can you please explain where is the interest of this looseness ? I had many pocketpc before this one (and 2 x HTC's), and it is the first time I meet this looseness. And from my point of view, yes , it is annoying !
I hate the feeling I have when pressing the pad or the buttons, when you should have a high quality machine (700 € ...) it is disapointing to feel the buttons moving under your fingers.

When I recieved my first Tilt, the D-Pad was very loose. Also, the UP button had to be mashed a little hard for it to work. It would do the 'click', but wouldn't engage unless you pressed a little harder. This was happening from the minute I took it out of the box. It was very annoying so I returned it for a new one. The new phone D-Pad is not loose at all and works perfectly. I've had this second Tilt now since about 10 days after release, so it's received quite a bit of use. Not sure what's up, but there was something wrong with the first Tilt I received.

Kaiser arrived! Stylus question! lol

OK i A D O R E this phone so far! Everything that annoyed me about the Universal, doesn't apply to this phone!
1 thing i have noticed... when i move the stylus across the screen, it feels 'scratchy' and im getting paranoid that im going to start scratch teh screen lol, has anyone else noticed this?!
Got mine today -- the first thing I did was to put on a WriteShield screen protector on it. I had one left over from my Wizard; the Kaiser screen is almost exactly the same size as the Wizard's.
Note that there should be a screen protector in the box -- use it if you're worried about scratching the screen.
My wizard did that but never scratched. The touch screen is made to withstand your stylus and other tiny abuse. Never the less, slap on a screen protector for sure.
yes, i did feel that the kaiser screen has more friction when i write especially in chinese on it with the stylus. then i put a screen protector on it and now its all smooth. the screen protector that came in the box was trash, it was not smooth and the transparent rate wasnt that high.
Damn, I am so horny about kaiser, I can hardly wait for it. However since I live in Croatia, it's probably take another month or so for T-Com to start selling them here.
Currently I own MDA Vario, and what I mostly hate about it, is the fact that stylus is sliding out of phone shell. Mine started falling out in less than two months after I bought my Vario.
Do you think that they have the same design flaw in kaiser? Why didn't they at least make the stylus hole on top of device (like HP did for IPaq PDA-s)?

People had that problem with the Universal (although i never did )
The stylus on the Kaiser seems VERY secure, i'm sure you'll have absolutely no issues with it coming out.

Both my Hermes and Kaiser started of a little "gritty" at the start. I think there is a a fine coating that wears off after a while. Certainly my Hermes did and the Kaiser after a couple of days use is beginning to smooth out. Just something that is present when it's so new.
Worth noting that I've been pushing loads of apps onto the Kaiser, including memory hungry ones and NO Lock ups at all so far and it's fast compared to the TyTn. To those that said why upgrade for the sake of a couple of new things (GPS mainly), I can only say that so far it's behaved perfectly.
One minor concern - despite the overall speed benefit, my IE scrolling seems a bit gltchy anyone else noticed this?

Main keypad loose???

Anyone else notice the main keypad under the screen (the whole thing) sits loose under the brushed aluminum front face? Just curious if mine is bad or they all are that way. Thanks.

yeah..i think its been discuss already, your not the only one with that problem, mine seems like its getting worse.
Just to inform that mine is no problem. I got Kaiser since first week of September and the keyboard still fine.
In fact, I dont use it quite often nowadays because I am getting used to the Pocket CM Keyboard !
http://www.pocketcm
I can type very fast with pocketcm keyboard and I have my own keyboard layout with all keys that I want.

Acutally, they are talking about the dpad area... the whole group of buttons there (Send/End/Start/OK/etc) is loose. I'm in the same boat.
Prolly should take a poll, since some are tight and not moving, like mine, I'd perhaps consider asking for a replacement.

I think you guys are worrying a bit over nothing. It's just a plate that has a fraction of a millimetre around it that lets it move a little. It cannot get worse as it slides under the faceplate and therefore will never fall out. It does not have the switches attached. They are perfectly firm underneath. It's just a fancy plate/cover, it's not glued or screwed in place but merely held in by the lip that runs underneath the faceplate. Not an issue really -forget about it in my view.
Mike
I was just curious...I think it is designed that way. No big deal really

Nothing wrong with being curious. You are correct it is designed that way and in that sense it's not a fault. It might bother some people, but I just wanted to re-assure anyone that thought it was a fault and might get worse. They are all like that though some may be a little more free to move than others.
Cheers
Mike
PS apologies if I sounded blunt or dismissive, did not mean it that way. I know it bothers (or makes people curious!) not just here but on other fora.
most dpad assembly moves...like the 810 pro and 838 pro..
it's design like that...

Bottom Silver keypad moves around . .

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone else has this issue? My thumb pad at the bottom of the Tilt; where the answer call, end call, e-mail, IE . . etc; move around. R your pads solid or do they move around too? If mine is the only one I'm getting my warranty on that thing!! Thanx for the help.
mine is like that too.. its a htc quality control issue. i posted a long thread about it.. my buddys does the same thing but my other buddys doesnt.
same here
same here..
at first i thought this would be a problem..but i guess it is not...
let me know
Ironically, I found out about that today as well. I don't think it is a major issue, but if it does escalate, you can use your warranty.
We've been down this road this week. There is already a thread out there and the bottom line is just like the service guy says at the BMW dealer: "Oh! Yeah! They all do that!"
Same here
Mine does that, ive been through 3 this week, and the ones in the store do it too. Its about to be the end of this damn phone for me.
Do y'all not realize that it's supposed to move like that? the silver piece of plastic with all the buttons on it also has a lip that's underneath. It is supposed to slide up and down a tad and not much from left to right. If you examine it closely, you'll also see that there really is no way this can fade or get super loose over time..
another question: can i replace this silver thing anyway? coz my windows logo broke a lil bit and now it looks like a door
my sim free kaiser keypad did that too - the keys on my vario3 are however different, and fit more snugly into the chasis - i think htc thought the keys would be more flush with the chasis, hopingthat would stop them from moving around - pretty sure this is a QA issue :S

Diamond build quality *re-visited*

I know there is already a post on this, but it applied mostly to grey market diamonds. I would like to hear from some people who have recently bought official HTC diamonds from their service providers.
My phone's screen is perfect. No yellow tints and no lines/rainbowing. However, the top and bottom panels are not flush with one another meaning that at a certain angle, the backlight bleads out a little on the left side where the panels meet. In addition, the top panel does not align with the rim of the phone properly so that there is a thin gap - this is quite annoying as the gap appears to have already accumilated dust/lint.
My phone is from Orange and I received it a few days ago. I can't say that these 'issues' bother me too much, but I would like to hear how common they are and whether they might pose problems etc. If this is a rarity and I have been unlucky I may consider swapping it for another Diamond.
Thanks,
S.
*bump*
Why the silence guys? :-(
Share your thoughts please. I lead a pretty hectic life so build is v. important for me, so your opinions/perspectives would really help.
Only thing I have noticed on mine is that the printed ring around the wheely thingy is not central.
Seriously, I think it's fine.
My Diamond is perfect. Came from my provider here in Finland, and no issues with build quality at all.
Probably not silence, more likely most have no issues!
Certainly none with mine.
I have a TMobile MDA Vario IV Compact and have no hardware build quality issues (don't get me started on the default software branding ! YUCK !)
Fair enough. The question is, do I swap this diamond which works flawlessly and has a great screen, for another which in all probability will not, for the sake of cosmetic perfection?
I'm thinking NO.
Grey market ?!
My HTC is 100% official but I bought it directly from a high street dealer rather than from my GSM provider.
I usually do that for two reasons - Firstly it's quicker when you want to get hold of new trendy phones Secondly I don't have to bother with simlocking and operator limitations
....and the rebate is often better.
Please don't think that only operator branded copies are genuine.
BTW - You should keep your handset if you're happy with it

i have the same problem .. .. well it isnt really a problem at all ... and i have a dead pixel .. but just 1 pixel in a 640x480 screen is not noticeable at all
perfect diamond here. got it from provider first day it came.
got mine today on t-mobile uk. its perfect!
Had mine since it was launched on Orange and the only problem I have is one dead pixel which is stuck on blue. It's almost impossible to see without really looking for it though so doesn't really bother me.
same here.. bought it from vodafone. not a single *build* flaw
So no-one can see any amount of white light leakage through a tiny gap where the two panels meet then? I must have an extremely rare phone! lol.
I have a slight gap with light leakage, doesn't bother me as you can't really tell with the top and bottom screen protector on and lined up peroperly.
I don't think its very rare as I've seen a few video's with the same problem. I read someone on here had the same issue and tried returning it but was apparently told it was within HTC's build tolerance.
When you say screen protector, do you mean a third-party one you have bought yourself?
Interesting re HTC build tolerance. Hmm...
I use a martin fields protector which comes with the screen protector and a protector for the bottom button bit.

I have this "gap" as well, but it is miniscual and I'm sure its on most of the devices....you just have to look real Hard.
My gf's Diamond is almost perfect. I just noticed the stylus to be slightly misplaced... But she didn't even noticed it, so it's not a big deal.
Mine looks perfect, but I have a little backlight leakage on the bottom of my screen. Means a yellow/white spot on the bottom of my screen.

Defective hardware keyboard, It is curving!

Hi!
I searched a bit around internet and this is not so uncomon issue, so i started this thread, to see how common it is.
In mine case first curving of keyboard appeared in 2 months. At first it seems innocent, just a little higher keyboard, just not perfectly flat anymoe. But than buttons rly become curved and the whole keyboard moves up a little. Now some letter at the top are comming off already! I see the light through holes in keyboard, i realy didnt expect this from a phone like this, as hardware quality is overall very good. Except for keyboard i suppose... Now it makes very much noise typing..
At some forum i found verizon replaced this curving with no issue, but i dont realy want to send it into repair, in my case it would last 1-2 months, i know it sucks..
So i was wondering abaut gluing it, but first i will probably buy replecement for ~10EUR and use superglue all over edges, expecialy bottom, but i don't seem to find any instruction on removing keyboard on the google, even youtube only has dissasembly for internals. I tried with nails a little and it seems keyboard will eventualy come off by itself lol...
Very dissapointed, anyone else has this, or is this not so common and i should make a waranty request?
