3G and HSPDA auto switch with specific programs - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

i just had an idea if anyone has ever heard of something like this. i was wondering since touchflo can be enables and disables upon specific program titles... i was wondering if it would be possible to have a program to auto switch the 3G and HSPDA network upon specific programs as well.
for example: if internet explore is closed the 3G and HSPDA signal would be off, and the device would run off edge to conserve battery, and if internet explore is opened then it would switch the 3G and HSPDA signal on for internet browsing.
of course this can be implemented for specifc programs not just only for internet explore.
i was wondering has anyone ever heard of this before? or could possibly develope this?

sounds like bandswitch or commmgrpro to me, look at www.commmgrpro.com

I played around with Kaisertweak today, after hardresetting my phone and disalbing the att customizations. I enabled the HSPDAoption in the tweak settings and now the connection in the start bar shows "H" whereas before I Did all that it said 3G.
My question: Which one is faster on AT&T Network? I don't have data connection turned on but will be doing so soon, I can experiment but figured someone here could answer based on experience.

thank you i will give them both a test

With HSDPA it's suppose to be a bit faster than it being disabled and just using the norm 3G connection. I live in PA and when I had my Tilt on normal 3G it would lose signal when I went to new jersey but with HSDPA turned on it stayed longer before it dropped out but that was because I went from metro coverage to middle of nowhere in jersey.

I haven't noticed any appreciable DL speed difference with HSDPA activated or turned off (via KaiserTweak). I'm almost always in the Chicago metro area with plentiful UTMS and I also tend to revert to WiFi which is available almost everywhere here, so YMMV.

Kaiser keeps switching from 3G to Edge

A friend of mine just purchased the Kaiser to be used on the at&t network. He lives in a 3G area in the USA and for some reason, his phone will not hold the 3G connection. It wants to switch to Edge. Is there a manual setting to stop this from happening or a new utility to enable/disable certain connection. Is this normal for 3G to do this. Any information I can pass on would be greatful.
Thanks
I think it's an indication that 2G is stronger than 3G in your area. My Kaiser always hold 3G connection all the time where I live. You can "manually" force 3G. Here is one the many ways to do it: on Windows Start menu, go to "Setting" then "Phone" (on the "Personal" tab), click "Band" tab, then use "WCDMA" for network type selection (default is "Auto")
Thanks for the help. I'll pass it on.
While the Kaiser is my first ppc type phone and I cannot claim to be expert I do think that this is a normal reaction of the phone to what networks are available.
I live in San Jose Ca. and must, perchance, move up and down the peninsula in the normal course of work and life.
I see my Kaiser switching from Edge to 3G to unnamed all up and down the peninsula. It is best for 3G in the cities and worse up in the hills -as one might expect. I also get the best 3G connections in the evenings and night vs. the daytime when, I assume, more 3G users are taking up bandwidth.
It is unfortunate that where I live is an Edge (during the daytime) area though I am paying for the 3G data plan.
3G issues with the TyTnII
Hello all:
I post on the AT&T HTC forumn and had this thread sent to me by another poster there.
I also have a TyTnII newly aquired from MobilePlanet on Weds. I am having the same issues with 3G. It briefly flashed the G icon on boot up then switches to Edge with all 5 bars. I've tried the manual mode fix, no luck. The wcdma gets no signal and the gsm goes back up to 5 bars same as auto.
Then theres the inability to register my serial # on HTC's EU site. Says SN is invalid... MP has had several reports of EU devices doing this.
I'm in the US, NorthEast NJ area. And in the middle of a known 3G area.
Bill
Can anyone help Bill out? How many of you CAN use 3G on the USA at&t network without a problem? He's trying to see if it's a setting issue or a phone issue. I'm not in a 3G area so I can't help him here.
Thanks

I get a 3g signal when I go into Philly (I live about 45 minutes outside the city) It holds it just fine as well. Is it possible you just have weak 3g coverage where you are? I actually shut off the 3g on my phone as I have no 3g coverage at work or at home and the 3g connection discharges the battery in a hury.
I'm on AT&T as well.
Oh - BTW - I also can't register my phone with the eClub either. I sent an Email to the HTC Webmaster but have not had any reply in 3 days. I'm not too confident in HTC's support.

"3G" Icon on AT&T Tilt

The 3G Icon has never displayed on my tilt. I live an area that supposedly has great 3G coverage.
It's quite annoying since all the screenshots I've seen of the Tilt are always displaying the icon.
I get the E, H, and very rarely the G icons but I've never seen the 3G icon.
Any ideas?
Well,
The H is for HSDPA, which is higher speed than what the 3G denotes....so I'd say that you are doing just fine.
Yeah, I do get he H quite a bit.
But I just find it strange that I've never seen the 3G Icon.
Maybe because I am not using the stock AT&T ROM. I'm using Q-Mobile 1.2
Is the 3G icon specific to the Stock AT&T Rom?
Yea, is there a cab that changes the icon to 3G?
I have the stock AT&T ROM in my Tilt. When it goes online, the 3G lights up first, then, when I am lucky, an H replaces it. The difference in speed is noticable when the H is on. You can use Kaiser Tweaks to enable HSDPA on the Tilt - stock, it only allows access to the slower 3G speeds.
Why would you want to disable the higher speed transfer?
The H icon you are seeing is actually a good thing as it means that AT&T now has full HSDPA coverage in your area. In my case, the first three months that I had my Tilt, the 3G icon showed when idle and the H icon showed when I was downloading data. One day, out of nowhere, the 3G icon disappeared and has been replaced by the H icon for good. I have now noticed two things that are different now that the H shows all the time.
1. I can now make a call without the data connection being disconnected.
2. My download speeds shot through the roof! When the 3G icon was there, I had speeds of about 550kbps. Now I get speeds of 1000kbps!
Dont worry, I too panicked and tried to fix the missing icon, but even after a hard reset didn't remedy the situation, then I knew it was something tower-based.
H is good. It's amazing. It's like cable internet in your pocket. (OK...but close...)

On a Tilt you can also go to Start / Programs / File Explorer / My Device / Windows / HSDPASwitch to enable and disable HSDPA. You can even create a shortcut to it and put it in your programs folder or start menu.
There's a lot of hidden goodies in the windows folder. Everyone should just browse through there and see if they find anything interesting. (Field Test is there too!)

No I mean just the icon, I don't want the H icon. I just want 3G. For some reason when ever I look at it it makes me feel like its a slow speed.

HSDPA is the fastest type of 3G available. Think of the H as the strongest possible connection.
In my city, I get 3G icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. While I was in Las Vegas, I get the H icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. It's strange but it's true. I've always thought the H icon is for data only but apparently H is also in phone mode too. I get the H icon in my city only when I'm usnig the AT&T's data and only while there's data session. When data is idle, it change back to 3G. But when I was in vegas, it never changed to 3G. It always displays H.

3G not working with HTC shipping ROM?

Firstly, let me thank everyone who does all the SUPERB work on this site, developing software, ROMs, and tools that us normal users would otherwise never see...
Here's my problem:
I got a Kaiser with the shipping AT&T ROM on it - I'm in the US.
I wanted to get rid of the bloatware and other crap that AT&T puts on the device, and take it back to an HTC ROM.
The problem is, I can only connect to the EDGE network, and I'm only getting 40-60k transfers - I know that with my Samsung Sync (my previous phone) I was getting 1.3-1.5Mbps using the same site to test (http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed)
Is this a limitation within the HTC ROM? If so, does anyone know if newer HTC ROM's (perhaps even with WM6.1) will fix this problem, or do I HAVE to use an AT&T ROM to access the 3G (HSPDA) network in the US?
Thanks in advance for your time!!!
Do you see the icon 3G and it changes to H once you're accessing the internet? If no, you might want to check if you correctly config the connection.
I myself don't trust http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed when it runs on PIE web browser. I did the benchmark on 2 different types of connection, at&t HSDPA and Verizon FiOS* Wifi, and it comes up nearly the same speed 1.3-1.5Mbps.
*I have 15 Mbps download package.
Yes, it DOES do that (Mr President...lol)
What site do you prefer to test the speed of your 3G connection? I was hoping to use Speedtest.net, but doubt that they support mobile.
So, I guess that you're saying my connection is probably just fine, but that the site is problematic?
Thanks for the quick reply, btw!!
- Mark
I don't pay attention too much on speed. But, there are many ways to confirm that you're connected to 3G network.
If the answer is yes for any question below, then you're 3G.
a. Tethering internet via your PC on "internet sharing" mode and make a call at the same time.
b. Stream any audio broadcast with bitrate above 196Kbps.
Enjoy.
Um, where do you live? Pretty much only the major cities have 3G deployed, and even then, it's no guarantee. I live in Minneapolis where 3G was rolled out last November.

I'm in Pittsburgh - I know for certain that I'm in 3G territory, as I just got the Kaiser a few weeks ago, and before that, was using a Samsung Sync tethered to my laptop, and getting 1.3 - 1.5 MBps....
UPDATE
Must have had a lousy signal where I was trying it before - I tried it again, using the same site, and was getting 500-600k - so I guess it's hitting the 3G network, but for some reason, changing the 3G icon to an H, presumably indicating HSPDA.
All's well...can one of the mod's please lock this thread? Thanks!

Introduction and silly question about "H" vs. "3G"

Introduction
==============
Hi all: first time poster, long-time lurker here. I'm thoroughly impressed with the level of discourse and amount of knowledge and information on these forums and the associated Wiki pages. I'm still a total newb when it comes to SmartPhones in general, but I'm trying to climb the steep learning curve as quickly as I can.
Background: Have 2-week old AT&T Tilt phone with AT&T voice and data coverage. Have experimented with a few different shipped and cooked ROMs, and have settled on the BRR-HTC-2.0 Lite ROM. It's basically a barebones version of the latest HTC Shipped ROM, and I have installed the following programs:
HouMing File Explore Extension
HTC TaskManager
Microsoft .NET CF 2.0
HTC Connection Setup
Microsoft Live Search
Google Search
Opera 9.5 Beta (IE is still default browser, though)
Adlobe Reader LE 2.0
Vicsoft ClearTemp
Cyberon VoiceCommander
HTC QuickGPS
HTC Home
Jblend Java
TCPMP
Skunkworks FlashVideoBundle
Silly Question
==============
Am I connected "correctly"? With the out-of-the-box AT&T Rom, my connection "bars" had a "3G" on top of them (as long as I was in a 3G zone, of course!), and the data connectivity icon also showed a "3G". Now, both areas show an "H" where a "3G" once was, and although I'm pretty sure everything is fine, there's a naggine though that something isn't right.
I tested my download speed at CNet's Bandwidth Speed Test and got a download speed of 374.9 Kbps. Does this sound about right for the AT&T 3G network? Should I be concerned that something is wrong?
- DDB
It used to say 3G and only H when it was transfering data and shortly after. Now it says H all the time in most areas. It also used to say 3G AT&T for the network name when 3G was available but now it just says AT&T. They must have changed the network somehow.
The "H" icon stands for HSDPA. It is an upgraded standard of the 3G network. Basically, you are using 3G, but your phone is letting you know you are in a service area that supports HSDPA - this is a good thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
Thanks!
Thank you both for the quick feedback. Sounds like I have nothing to worry about.
I'm also now having issues with connecting to my mail servers, but I'll save that question for another thread.
Thanks again!

Actually, what I've heard is that H indicates HSPA.. The phone still registers 3G if the area only has HSDPA, but when it also has HSUPA, combined being HSPA, it shows H.
So do speed tests ethered via USB, let us know the results.. Make sure you test downlink and uplink of course.
Test Speeds
When people mention test speeds, how is that accomplished? I have gone to online speed test websites via my tilt, but I continually see "via usb". Is this using the internet sharing and a laptop? Thanks for the help!

Where's the 3G!!

A week ago I got a second hand Tilt. It AT&T branded but a HTC rom was flashed to it, ROM version 3.28.405.0 WWE, Radio 1.65.17.56, Pototcol 25.83.40.02H.
My issue is I see not "3G" indicator on the screen in areas where I know there's coverage (my other phone does indicate 3G coverage). So what could this mean? Is something missing??
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!

Having already read the HTC User Manual for the TyTN II perhaps? If you get the pdf from HTCs website (or even search for it) and have a read, you'll see that in areas of 3G coverage, sometimes the device will display a 'H' which is superior to ordinary old 3G.
My issue is that I'm in an area with 3G coverage, my other cell indicates this with a "3G" icon on it's screen, but my tilt does not indicate or detects 3G coverage. There's no "3G" or "H" on my display.

Can u post screenshot of your screen? What icons do u have there(on the upper bar)?
You may want to look for something like Kaiser Tweak or something else that disables 3g.. Also you can try tapping on the signal icon at the top and make sure that all the data/3g stuff is turned on at the bottom.
Don't know how to get screenshoot. On the top of the Today screen there's, from right to left, the task manager, the battery, the signal strength (just the little antenna and the bars) and the WiFi icon.
Where in Kaiser Tweak or Advanced Configuration Tool could disable 3G?
Kaiser Tweak = under Data
Advanced config = again, under Data.
Tried it...no joy!
Went to Adv. Config. and eneble everything under data connections. Still nothing.

Did you check in Advance config to see if just the icons are turned of ? I believe you can just turn the icons off ( because some people find them annoying ) but still call and connect at 3G speed. Are you lacking speed or just the icons. ?
Let me re-state
I've had this Tilt for about a week, my other cell (Samsung A737) indicates "3G" all the time while I'm at work so yes my sim is 3G. This Tilt has never indicated "3G".
I went to Adv. Config under data connections and enabled everything.
What I'm trying to figure out, is this Tilt unable to detect "3G" or is it a missing icon thing.
IF
1. you have a 3g sim
2. Kaiser Tweak and Advanced config don't have 3g disabled
3. you don't have the "nodata.cab" installed
4. 3G data is turned on in the comm manager
5. HSDPA is turned on in /settings/connections/advanced network
6. All the proper info is set for your connection "media net"
and you still don't have 3g.
I would say at the very least do a hard reset or update your ROM.
Anything I'm missing?
Ok...more data...new questions

do some research and you will find all the answers you seak.
Say what?
I'm sorry ChumleyEX but that's not an answer...I dont have a data plan so MediaNet is, in my opinion, not an issue. Like I said before, that didn't keep my other (and less sophisticated cell) from detecting 3G coverage... anyway more data!!
I tried turnning off wifi to see if wifi icon becomes "3G", that doesn't work, the wifi icon gets an "X" over it & does not become "3G".
Yesterday I found out that if you try to make a video call the cell tells you if there's a 3G network available, so I tried this in my office & it answers no 3G network available.
Last night I started experimenting with flashing, I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro".
I flashed a couple of Hard SPLs & a couple of radios to try and it got me thinking, could the lack of "3G" be a radio or ROM issue??

It definitely could be radio rom issue, but ... I am flashoholic, that means I flash almost every rom that comes out. And on most roms that I flashed the 3G icon changes after some time to the X, but after going to the internet via gprs the 3G appears once again. I dont know why is this happining, there was a disscusion about this, but I dont know in which thread.
The funny thing is although I have the X icon, I am in 3G area and I can make video calls and use the 3G cappabilities. So I dontknow why u can not.
" I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro"
So it's possible that the media net info is incorrect. Also, your simple phone that has the 3G show up is just that, a simple phone. This tilt isn't so simple.
if this link works, download the file and run it.
