Serious Trouble With Build Quality : HTC Future Customers, buy with cautious... - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Ok, here we are.
I bought the HTC Diamond one week ago.
The first unit i had, had some issues with the screen : the right corner of the screen was a bit high compared with the left corner.
Here is a a picture of the problem :

Since this is not the only problem i was having with it, the lcd screen also appeared to have some problems, text wasn't very clear/cut at all and was in fact pretty blurry.
The problem could be temporary solved by turning off the screen, and turning it on again.
NOT OK

http://www.hostingpics.net/pics/793204texte_net.jpg OK
Finally, i came back to the shop where i bought it, get another unit and.... i'm currently experiencing the same problems.
1/ Inaccurate position of the screen with the button and the whole unit
2/ Blurry screen
I contacted the French Customer Service one week ago, didn't had an answer from them. They don't seem to give a damn ****
SO, for those who are currently thinking of buying an HTC Diamond, be aware of these problems.
If you can wait, then do it. It may be the smarter choice to do, in waiting of HTC to solve these youthful mistakes.

Im on my third, the first wouldnt power up, the second one wifi wouldn't turn on, and the third still has issues with the actual construction just like yours, but not nearly as bad. All three however, had slight imperfections in the build. Finally, none of them have been accepted as an HTC product when registering.
If I were deciding on buying a new phone, it would still be the diamond, but never will I buy another phone until it is officially released in the UK. These grey markets are probably the first batches that still go through redesign and testing thus have the imperfections. The phone having issues isnt a retailer issue, but a manufacturing issue. Such a nice piece of tech (I have bought EVERY mid to luxury phone since the Nokia 8800, and yes I have an issue with spending $$$), but I always but them the day they drop. The same old story, pulling my hair until the official is released, and then all the fixes and mods come out for my grey market phone to work 90% properly. FED UP, really. This is the last one I buy when they come out, my main concern is I am in the US, and some phones make it to the US market and then my phone is no longer unique.
Conclusion, in my vast experience of mobile tech, never have I been this irritated with a poor release. Like I said, such an impressive phone..........in theory.
If HTC ever wants to contact me to make up for this debauchery and release this sense of being bamboozled, PM me, I'll have my people call your people.

I bought two Diamonds. Found these issues:
1. one of the LCD Screen is more yellow when compared with the others
2. power on/off button is not senstive on the right side (too low, and no click feel; its right side is ok.)
3. mic becomes mute during calls (happended twice), I had to soft reset it.
4. screen doesn't turn on sometimes (the button light is on, just not the screen). Press the power button on and off to turn on the screen.
Called HTC tech support, they told me to get a replacement from vendor. And the Vendor told me to wait for the 2nd batch to arrive in 1-2 weeks.
Overall, Diamond has very good design and form factor, but poor quality control.

I'm lucky...
No any issues about build quality.. Especially screen is the magnificent..

no issues with mine
mines from the 2nd batch my wholesaler told me that the 1st batch of every phone are not perfect

hopefully the product come with a two year warranty...

I had a build quality issue that a bit diferent than the dispaly. But it adds to the general poor build quality of the Diamond
Here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405088&highlight=reset+button

C'mon zmob123, quit whinging! If you go to the grey market you get grey (dodgy) products. If you live in the UK, WAIT until it is released in the UK officially! If you live in the US wait until it is released there! If you are desperate go for the grey market - sometimes you are in the luck, sometimes you are in the s**t. Now, if any of you are so desperate that you spend around £430 for the very first version of ANY mobile phone, you should go and see a shrink because you are in serious trouble. I am still waiting for my MDA Compact IV and even though I really, really what it ASAP I will stay put and wait. No risky grey market for me. That way I'll not have to be disapointed.

aiwama
ive always owned a grey market import, never had any issues.
maybe as i wait 2-3 weeks so all the people who want to have the 1st from the factory can have it with issues.
and i get the 2nd batch.
when the n95 came out there was similar issues, it was mostly for the 1st batch of phones, all others had no issues.
my advice, is you want a grey market phone get one. BUT wait 1-3 weeks before you buy for the dust to settle on build quality issues, or contact the supplier to see if they are selling the 2nd batch....

I hear you man, I live in the US, but not whining. I like to get it when it comes out, just like everyone else on here I love tech a gadgets, but I have to agree with you, just avoid the risk and leave the worries behind. Only problem is I get this "itch" as soon as its released. Besides, the guy who started the thread started the *****ing, just thought I'd throw in my two pennies. Please, don't get me wrong, the phone is fantastic, just needs some finishing touches. To be honest, never had major issues until the diamond, but I think to root of the evil is the TouchFlo3D. The cosmetics is just a bad job on HTC's part. Oh, and the shrink, I'll phone in the morning,

I'm not "*****ing", boy, therefore please watch your word.
I am writing here the problems i am encountering with this phone (not a black market one, an official one i get to a high price in a big brand french shop) since it is the second unit i'm getting and still having the same problems.
These problems are not software related, they can't be resolved with an update, a program, or with gold help.
Since we have no way to know if HTC is aware of these problems and going to solve them, and since i don't think i'm wrong by saying that some of their staff is walking on this forum (do you remember HTC Kaiser drivers issue?), i don't think it was a such bad idea to post this.
Everything is not black with this phone, but at this level of price you are expecting something better than these speakers, screens, and builds problems.
So, if other peoples are having the same problems, don't hesitate to give your feedback.
All in all..
Ladies and Gentleman, i'm afraid i have to leave you for some hours.....

Haha Yeah guys its just a more basic phone for her. She doesnt need some crazy pphone that does as much as the Kaiser. She just needs a phone to talk and text one. She loved her iPhone before and was just getting the hang of things when I got rid of it and got her the Kaiser haha. But she would like to go back now anyways. To each their own guys. Its all personal preference.
well I would never buy an iPhone, I don't see why it's terrible for another person to get one, especialy if they like it and don't like the competition.
I love to tinker with my "toys"; some people want an easy out-of-the-box experience. You can't have both, so you have the winMobiles and the apples. To each his own.

I completely agree with you up until 'you can't have both'. Why not? I completely believe that this is where Windows Mobile falls flat on it's face. I would expect that the vast majority of iPhones sold are due to it's looks (I know that's the only factor drawing me towards wanting one). I would therefore argue that had the Windows Mobile interface looked as nice if not nicer then they would obviously be much more appealing, to both the 'fashion' buyers, and to the kind of people that use this forum as it would encompass both functionality, the ability to be modded, and aesthetics...and the iPhone would become obsolete! So come on WM...employ some f'ing designers!! It's a no-brainer!
altho i wouldnt have one, iphone is much thinner, lighter ..
most ppl just dont do the same or expect the same from their device as we do.
i know many guys who sold their tilts for exactly the reasons above..
my tilt is bigger and heavier than my 8y/o nokia .. its an everyday heavy lug when many times i just need a simple phone and occasional web connection..
if i could, or it made any sense, i would have 2 phones.. light and industrial strength
wife has really light thin phone and a nokia n800 in her purse.
driving around, she needs web access. nokia has fast and far wifi recognition..
at least 40% of networks are open and not pw protected..
she taps in real quick, does her business and drives off..
it worx really well
Iphone not so bad
I went from an 8525 > iphone > Tilt.
Still got the iphone. After it's jailbreaked and installer is installed, you can customize it and get just about any program you want on it. It's got style, and the transitions are smooth.
I like WM better, but for its hard to down the iphone, because it's a cool and fast phone.
one major reason i bought my tilt was b/c of the GPS... TomTom is so cool..
it saved me from having to own another gadget..
The iphone with installer does have a load of programs, but what annoys me is that most of those are just eye candy rather than actually useful apps or hacks like we have under WM... Of course the interface smoothness, speed and overall comfort makes it awesome for things like web surfing, but there's so much more functionality on a Kaiser that even if I like the iphone concept, when thinking rationally I would only use it for web and to look at it.. no possible justification to have both
I too to love the Kaiser for versatility. It has managed to include all the devices I was using, last one being the GPS that was external before and that I of course never had with me when I needed it...
Does not even the new 3G iPhone do picture msgs?
Man... maybe I'm crazy but all these people are talking about the iphone's speed and reliability.. In my personal experience (a lot, I live in trendy hollywood) I hear more people saying "I HATE this piece of ****!!" more than anything else about the iphone. Just having dinner the other night this girl's iphone lagged like crazy and straight up froze for a good 20 seconds. She said "It does this all the time". Then my other buddy's tryin to show me some pictures on his iphone and he has to turn the thing in his hand like 4 times to get it to switch to landscape. So from my personal experience.. it would seem that the "reliability" of the iphone is all how it was marketed, not how it actually performs.
I'm tired of my HTC Magnum. I would consider an iPhoney in trade, just to tinker with something different.
Hey I have 1st gen iPhone in very good condition unlocked. where you located? pm me asap!
Not to mention new iPhone 3G's battery is a disaster, wont last as long as even tilt...
So you could show up at an awesome party and try to use your iBeer to impress your mates, and only to find out your beloved iPhone 3G has died on you...

I'm pretty sure those "reliability issues" are like always caused by 3rd-party programs. iPhone users (at least those I know) often have 4-5 pages of useless but funny/good for boasting programs installed, so it's not surprising one could be buggy and cause problems.
One of my friends once had an issue where his iphone wouldn't even hold a day on battery anymore. Turned out it was a program that was still eating the CPU even on standby. Uninstalled and it was fine. He never had speed issues but it can be just the same.
The same is valid on the Kaiser and other WM devices too... I had a program (A2DPToggle) that would do the same, phone never went into standby anymore as soon as the today plugin was active...
Not even talking of the PC... It's just the same on any platform. Incompatibilities/badly designed programs will always be around.

I'm a HUGE tilt/ kaiser fan, and still don't understand what you're talking about. The iphone doesn't have poor call quality, it has great call quality. I've used one myself, and have tons of friends that have the iphone. Horrible messaging? No... it works great actually, it just lacks MMS (which should be comings hortly in an update). Oh, and lacking mms is probably just as comparable to the tilt's lack of a good dialer, or a decent camera....lol.

Apples and oranges here. While the dialer and camera may not be up to par to most folks, the functionality is already there.
Lacking MMS is a totally different issue.
Your thread, like every other time an iPhone and a Windows phone are mentioned together, has been hijacked. It is a fact that both camps have very strong emotions and a "my phone is the only choice" attitude. This thread is not the place for that discussion. Let's get back to the purpose of the OP.
Does anyone wanna trade an iPhone for this guys Tilt?
Anyone have a new one they would trade?

Me and the Tilt hit Vegas

The adventure started Tuesday morning at 4:25am, the phones alarm was set to wake me up at 4:30am, but the excitement had me up early. Good thing, because I screwed up and put PM next to the time. Oops. A couple of hours later I make it to the airport with no problems. Before getting on the plane I set my weatherbug today plugin for Las Vegas and then turn the phone off.
Weatherbug: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=404969&highlight=weatherbug
Once on the plane and in the air we are told that it’s ok to turn electronic items back on unless they are cell phones. Well this isn’t a cell phone it’s an xda. So I turn it on and make sure it’s in airplane mode. The first thing I do is grab my head phones with the mini usb adapter and start watching some Starwars themed Robot Chicken with Coreplayer.
http://www.coreplayer.com/
While flying I watched a couple of things and read a book, nothing overly exciting. When we land we are told that it’s ok to turn on our cell phones, so I hit the com manager and turn off airplane mode. I was surprised that the time didn’t auto update like my Treo 650 had the years before. (neither did the 2 Moguel’s that my friends had) After setting everyone’s second time zone for them we were off. The lovely weatherbug informed us that the temp was a cool 102 and climbing. (yes folks it hit 108 later on that day).
So the phone had done some work to entertain me but so far it hadn’t done too much to talk about. I was able to enjoy having hsdpa service for once and loved it. Of course I used to the com manager to keep it off when it wasn’t needed by me, the phone can auto update stuff on edge for all I care. During this time another app had it’s chance to shine. Kaiser Tweak allowed me do disconnect data after 5 seconds of no use, and boy did that save battery life. Being out of town with a dead or dying phone isn’t something I want.
Kaiser Tweak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333898
While in Vegas I finally got my Skyfire download, so I opened the com manager and kicked on 3g+ and was rockn the downloads. I installed Skyfire but had to play some pool so I didn’t get a chance to use it at that point.
Skyfire Beta: http://www.skyfire.com/
I went to vegas with 6 people that all wanted to do different things, then 2 more arrived with another 4 a few days later. This sort of diversity allowed the Tilt to stand proud. Some people tried to use the phone book to find numbers or addresses, but not this guy. Google Maps FTW!
Google maps: http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps/
This sweet app (which updated while I was there) auto updated its location to vegas and helped find number and addresses within seconds. At one point I even used the GPS part of it for directions to something off the strip. TomTom would have been better because of the turn by turn instructions, but I was bull headed and didn’t install it ahead of time.
TCPMP helped out every single day. (this will be kinda silly) Being that others were just outside the restroom door as I was handling business in near silence, I decided to crank up some Tool and jam out while letting the kids go for a swim. (I didn’t want to lose the place of the movie I hadn’t finished on the flight so tcpmp got the audio duties).
TCPMP: http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/
While haggiling on the price of pool sticks and cases we used the calculator that was built in. At one point we all ate out at a very nice restaurant and we had to use several htc phones to figure out who owed what.
One of the people from the last group to show had brought a Macbook and wanted to get online to check email and you would think the casino would have free wifi. NOPE.. So me being the tech baller that I am, I install an old WMwifirouter cab that was on my phone. DOH it had expired. So I cranked up Skyfire and pain stakingly finding the site to download it from I find out that Skyfire is going to flake on my and not allow it to download on me. (Thanks Skyfire you suck) What a crappy first impression. So I fire up PIE and it works flawlessly, I install the new cab and we are cruising at hsdpa speed on the notebook. Everyone was amazed.
WMWifiRouter: http://www.wmwifirouter.com/
Again Skyfire let me down, we were waiting for our plane to show up and we knew that weather back home was bad (thanks again weatherbug) but we didn’t know how it would affect our flight. We just happened to have someone with us that worked for an airliner and had all sorts of websites that would give us info on how bad the flight would be. Well Skyfire wouldn’t allow a secure connection, but PIE would so again PIE saved the day. (I forgot to mention that one of the people that arrived later was able to do online check in over the phone, getting them a better seat on the plane, truly handy)
I never had to use the BT keyboard while I was there and the charger/usb extension was my best friend. Even charging the HTC touch a friend had while we were at Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville.
The app that saved the day was Pocket Word, because without that I wouldn’t have known where I parked my car and everyone else lost their parking info. The coolest App was GPStoday because I turned it on while in the air and everyone could see that we were going 550mph.
GPSToday: http://www.geoterrestrial.com/
The Camera was a champ, I took photos left and right, mainly to show off here. I did notice that it snaps photos super fast out in the sun and then waits forever in dim areas (we all know that). The camera was best used to catch a photo of a guy that was drunk and passed out in the casino. I took a single of him with my phone and then we posed with him and took snaps with a touch (because it’s snaps them faster) I am going to post the pics I took with the camera whenever I get home. I did a lot of panoramic pics that I hope you will like.
I really want people have a good idea of what this phone can do. It exceeded my expectations on a 4 day trip and I can’t imagine how useful it could be to a business person.
I love my Tilt
Wow the pics are freak large so I will link most of them and show the others.

the picture quality is quite okay. did u have fun there?
Vegas is oh so awesome.
Going in November.
Nice little write up of your trip.
I bought my Tilt in December, then went to Vegas the next week for my 21st birthday, it was my brother and sister's gift for me. We stayed at the Venetian, it was the best and biggest hotel I've ever stayed in in Vegas. Oh, I won $200 and made a guy with an iPhone totally jelous of my phone.

nice! i personally don't like the iphone too much, i tried it out, it was just so so.
I had a blast, it was my 4th year in a row, and to be honest having the Tilt by my side made everything better. I was in a place that I didn't know know too well and felt confident that as long as I was awake that I could get to where ever I needed or I could get someone there to me.
Thank you all for the kind words.
Awesome tribute to our fabulous device!!!
Oh, and I am jealous re Vegas!!!!
Great pics btw.
nice write up!

Thanks for all your hard work, skinning and mostly for your orginizational skills in keeping the skins thread running productively and peacefully ( such that it was ). We will miss you and look forward to your return. And you will.
My wife has an iphone that I fool with from time to time, Steve Jobs and Apple will crush the inspiration and creativity out of you in no time. Entertainment aside, unlike WM , the iphone is done Apple's way or not at all.
Good Luck, Denco
thanks for the excellent skins, etc.! Best of luck with your new toy...

Top 10 reasons iPhone is not good.
Time for my list. I’ll start backwards… well in order… at 10. Well.... 9 is good for iphone users
10. iPhone(Apple) users. Don’t get me wrong. I like people, but iPhone people and Apple people are their own breed. They always think that Macs are the best, Apple is the best company ever and the iPhone is the best thing since sliced bread. They will push the iPhone on you until you hate everything Apple. This includes you Walt Mossberg. Apparently for the price you get one iPhone and a few pounds of smug to carry around with you. When the iPhone 3G came out I had to keep checking my phone to make sure I really did have 3G for years because the way it was advertised I was certain they were releasing something so new to the market I couldn’t have had it already.
9. Applications made free for iPhones. I can go over a lot of applications that come out for iPhone that are free and good, but were out for Windows mobile for years beforehand and were not free. Shazam is out on Android and iPhone for free. They came out with a program called “TagIt” in 2006, but that has disappeared and they only have the service for iPhone and Android or for people in the UK(no offense, US gets stuff first 9 times out of 10). Pandora! Free for iPhone and its BIG NEWS, but its been out for Windows Mobile for a while, but you had to pay, which is not cool. I’m sure there are more out there, but I cant think of them right now. Those are the 2 big ones.
8. Cut and Paste. BGR is right, this is a big problem. Just because the Macs dont have mice with 2 buttons doesn’t mean you need to cripple your iPhone to not be able to copy and paste! (I know you can right click NOW but that’s kind of new).
7. 1 word, Flash. Skyfire has recently given Windows mobile users the benefit of Flash websites. I’d expect the best phone in the world to do the same. Flash mobile has been out for a while, but what sites recognize flash lite 3.1 or mobile 7? And Safari is constantly touted as the best browser. The numbers are simple - SkyFire loads WebPages much faster than Safari plus you get the real internet (yeah, with Flash, etc). Oh and congrats iPhone you finally have more choices.
6. Non-Replaceable battery. Now sure, the iPhone battery will last FOREVER, but what if it doesn’t? What if I want more than the 5 hours of 3G talk time Apple specs out? What if i want a high-capacity battery without cracking it open or putting a strange case on it? Given most phones will get thicker with a bigger battery, but you don’t have to void your warranty or use a case you don’t want to use. This really goes to the core of how Apple makes money. The original Mac cases could not be opened so you would be forced to buy a new computer and there was no ‘upgrading’. The iPods also have a non-replaceable battery. The reason is simple - when the battery dies this forces you to buy the newest version and since everyone loves Apple they shell out more money ever year for a slight upgrade. This may also explain why other items on this list are here; it gives Apple a reason to release iPhone v3. And don’t even get me started on the proprietary plug instead of mini-USB which is now becoming standard for PDA’s
5. Multitasking. There is some misconception about this and theiPhoneBlog has a good write-up about it and the deal is that Apple only allows its own apps(mail, phone, etc) to multitask. 3rd party apps cant. I’ll get into that in #4.
4. Install whatever i want without jailbreak. So with Windows Mobile, not only can i edit the registry, but I can install WHATEVER I WANT without jailbreaking my phone and potentially bricking it. I find it hard to believe that they can demand the price they do and lock your device entirely and not get heat for it. If Windows did the same thing they would get destroyed for it.
3a. The Screen. I hate hearing that the iPhone has such a beautiful screen. Guess what? I can see pixels. All of them. If I pick up my Fuze I don’t see any thanks to the glory that is VGA. I’m sure Apple will release a VGA screen and then I’ll hear all of the media hype about how it’s the sharpest screen ever even though we all know the Touch HD has the same dimensions with a higher resolution.
3b. The User Interface. The user interface of the iPhone is merely an application launcher and if you want more than that or a different look then Apple will tell you to look elsewhere or wait for their next latest and greatest release. It is literally nothing more than a page of shortcuts and people love the simplicity and entire lack of actual interface. And the intentional minimalist look for the iPhone (with a single hard button) also breeds this inefficiency. If you’re in an application and want to use the phone there’s no ‘phone’ button. You have to go home then launch the phone.
2. Customization of icons/themes/skins/BACKGROUND again without jailbreak. Just about every phone on XDA has a thread for “post your today screen”. For the iPhone, those forums need to be in the jailbreak sections. How hard would it be to make it standard to be able to have custom icons and skins? And changing the background was one of the bigger gripes I had when looking for a phone. It may not sound like much, but I want to do what I want to do. Why do I need to conform to what Apple wants? The name iPhone is a misnomer. It should be Steve’s Phone because he found some settings he likes and told you to like them too
1. MMS. Why cant i sent a MMS to my friends who have iPhones? When I ask them, they just say “email it to me”. Well I don’t want to. I can MMS pictures to my other friends, I’m not going to make an exception for my iPhone friends. You CAN get a MMS app for the iPhone, but you need to again Jailbreak it and then you’re good to go.
These reasons alone weren’t why I got the Fuze, but they did help in the long run. Hopefully you weren’t swayed by the hype and advertising like everyone else. What’s #1 on your list?
And if you are interested in what an iPhone can do when you jailbreak it, check out this link wouldn’t it be nice if it could do some of that right out of the box? Like a Windows Mobile phone?
Let the bashing begin…

Oh wait - I got that stupid smudge of doom and massive realignment problem on my Touch.
Touchphones are clearly still in their early days.
well, i have my iphone 3g for about 4 months now, while most of the glorious why iphone is not good list does not apply to me... with the exception of flash and UI, i am pretty happy with it. iphone comes with a lot of features i dont need to hunt down in WM, and a lot of interesting apps after it is jailbroke (seriously, if you can handle a WM, jailbreaking iphone should be a no-brainer process). i can safely say i probably wont get another WM device unless WM7 is significantly better than WM6.1, but i definitely wont get the next iphone... if theres a next one... back to symbian i guess...

Recent Galaxy S : good GPS or not ?

Okay, I know its a tricky subject, however I try the question.
This is because I have read dozens x dozens pages on this forum about this subject, and I cant' figure out :
If I buy now a Galaxy S (that should be recent), do I have a change to get a GPS that is fine ?
Thanks for the answers (and sorry if I start another battle : mine is working, not mine, ...).

I don't think anybody knows for sure and Samsung has recently been very quiet about GPS and GPS fixes. If GPS is a critical feature for you than I think it is fair to say you are better off buying another phone, maybe a Desire or Desire HD.
Most likely all Galaxy S will have crap GPS hardware.
No firmware can fix this.
An external GPS receiver will fix this for in-car use though.
The Desire HD has better specs regardless.
You must also remember the most vocal of those who supports the SGS GPS (DamianGTO) has some pretty crazy claims, but seems to get pretty defensive when asked to actually prove the quality of his GPS.
The GPS is merely average on this phone, but it could be far better, and even 4 year old Garmin fitness watches seem to produce more consistent results. The GPS sometimes looks accurate, and then goes skitzo suddenly. There are FAR safer phone choices available. My mum also recently got a Desire, and not sure about the GPS, but there are minor things which are more polished than the SGS's firmware
Mind boggling this GPS isn't it?
I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER, bought the phone in July, GPS is very much perfect.
I'm using Navigon.
Satellite locks in under a minute.
PS: tested about 500km in a car, highways, normal roads.
I too don't see any problems with the GPS in the Galaxy S, think this story has blown way out of hand. GPS locks in 30 seconds and is for the most part fairly accurate when I use NDrive. Brutmod or whatever its called doesn't work for me at all and was very unreliable. However, both Co-Pilot, NDrive and Trapster work flawlessly.
My phone's battery shows 21. Sept and my GPS is flawed.
In my experience, the GPS works ok in open spaces. Driving on roads, highways, and outside the city the GPS performs OK.
The problem is when you try to use it into de city. Then it seems unable to keep lock on satellites while you're moving around streets sorrounded by buildings.
It also performs better some days than others for unknown reasons.
In my opinion. If GPS is important for you, buying any other phone will be a safer choice.
I'd advise one thing, ask if you can take it out for a "spin", walk / run / drive around for a while and record the track. You'll see if you have something descent.
Apparently, some are, some aren't. Mine isn't "acurate" by itself but it is flawless with trackerbooster (can be found in app).
Between the SGS and the Desire HD, the SGS has the better display and a waayyy better GPU. DHD has a better cam (as per specs, we should see pictures from both to be sure) and a camera flash (but SGS has night mode, wich is, in my opinion, way more wrorthy than a flash)
GPS is basically average.. its not without flaws.. far from it.. but it works ok in most cases. It's just not a super great GPS. I suppose the hardware is nice and could be made to work better (it might also be interferences due to the hardware placement/RFI/etc..) but that's not perfect yet and probably wont ever be
It's brilliant(!)

Andrew stop posting lies about me in every gps tread.
OP: i would say you can't get a better phone then sgs. But you can be unlucky and get a bad phone.
Its not only gps that can be broken, but this is how products works in mass production. There will always be products that's bad that slips through the checks. But there will also be products that's is much better then it should normal be.
Im lucky to have 2 of them.
But try the phone out when you buy it.
Try the gps and make sure you 3 button combo works.
If it look god buy it.
If it looks bad, ask to try an other phone. If they don't let you, just go to an other store.
I did have an iphone 4 to, but i did sell that. Still got the iphone 3gs left.
So i can compare with them to.
The sgs is better in all area accept apps, mostly games.
But the sgs need some care to make it very good.
Mostly its a lag issue on some of them. But that easy to fix.
But a have never regret that i buy it in the first place. Also my girlfriend did buy one after she used mine.

Come on. Let's be serious about this matter.
The day you see as many people complaining about broken screens, broken batteries, broken 3G reception, or any other phone part, as you see complaining about a flawed GPS behavior, THEN you could assume that we are facing an ordinary problem, as ordinary as a faulty screen, or any other part of the hardware. But this is not the case.
I don't see loads of people claiming about every other part of the phone being broken, as I see complaining about the GPS. And more important, I don't see loads of people with other hardware problems complaining about they having exchanged the phone for a new one, or having sent it to repair, and having got back another phone with the same problem again and again. That only happens when we're talking about the GPS problem, so we can say with no doubt whatsoever that this GPS thing is way bigger than "normal mass production fault rate".
So, buying a Galaxy S with faulty GPS is not just a matter of being unlucky. Thanks to people like you who wrongly drove me to believe that the GPS problem wasn't such a big thing now I own a Galaxy S with a mostly useless GPS.

Excellent post. The GPS is certainly Galaxy's Achilles foot and anybody buying a SGS should realize that there is a significant chance that GPS on their device will not work properly. How big (or small) that chance is is a matter of debate, but it is certainly much larger than being just a random production fault that is normal with any mass produced product.
Come on guys, lets not argue pointless-ly again about GPS issue.
Some have issue, some don't so, The answert has been stated: Test it before buying it.
Test for Time having a fix
Test it for accuracy (for at least 15 min.)
Then you'll see if it works fine or not.
Bought Mine in July (Vodafone Ireland 16GB). Never had problems with GPS.
Looks like the first batches was the best
Open sky in the car:
Fast fix < 10secs
Sat Fix > 8 sats (16 in view)
accuracy: very good < 10m
navigation: No issues until now > 800Kms use

Thank you for the advice. But this brings two questions :
- how can I test quickly the GPS is (well) working ?
- what is this 3 button combo you are talking about ?

The three button combo is the way to get the phone into "download" mode so that you can flash new ROMs on it. To test it, shut down the phone, and then power up the phone while holding down volume down, home and power keys. You should see a "yellow man" and a "Downloading" text - if that appears, the phone can enter the download mode.
The GPS can only properly be tested by actually driving (or running) somewhere and seeing if Google Navigation is able to keep GPS lock and track your movement correctly. Just testing in shop whether the phone can get GPS lock is not enough.
Just try to get a fix inside the shop, phones good GPSes can (like the HTC Desire), Those with bad can't. (like mine, 3 weeks old)
Got mine in october, battery is 1.9.2010 dated, and I drive with GPS without any issue using Navigon and stock JM7
I'd say: buy from a shop with a 100% satisfied or money back logo. Then test GPS, if it's bad, return the phone. I personally think newer batches should be the most trouble free. However, there are surely still many old batches around even if you buy it today, you could get one of them...
I'm happy with SGS, won't get the desire (screen too ugly compared) and the HD is too big for my taste. But I got a good batch phone

Unfortunately, it isn't really that easy, unless you know someone who owns one
It isn't something you can test accurately in store. Either way, my advice is still that it's better to be safe than sorry. Even if the issue is hardware related, there is no way of knowing if the unit you buy works, the software on the Desire was heaps better for me (and so the Desire HD is probably even better).

Screen burn in + washed out

Update on my case:
I got my replacement unit yesterday and the screen is great. However now I have a slightly bent border and the infamous clicking sound issue on the left side...
I contacted GameStop again and requested a replacement when their 2nd wave comes, which is early next week so I'll see if I can be lucky this time. GameStop cs has been great so far.
Also Asus saw this post and contacted me for details. It seems they are aware and are doing researches on these defects.

Anyone having their nexus 7 with screen burn in and washed out colors with super obvious backlight bleeding?
I got mine yesterday and everything was great but this issue all of a sudden appeared when i turned it on after i woke up today.
Gamestop will try to do a special replacement order for me.
Edit: added some shots to show how uneven the backlight is and also the burn in issues. There was no flash used to take the shots.

But it demonstrates the issues regardless.
the photos don't really show how washed out it looks. It's like having a semi transparent layer on top of the screen.

Yes its really hard to capture with a camera but its definitely there. I found kicking up the brightness helps. The issue i was referring to might be intended so its easier to read in the dark.
Go look at threads from the G2x forum about screen bleed. Ridiculous amount of bickering over the same thing. If you don't like the product you got, exchange or return it. Not trying to stick it to the OP or anything, thanks for photos, just trying to kill this at the source before the N7 gets tainted with bad publicity because people didn't want to exchange. G2x's resale value plummeted because of issues like this being blown out of proportion, so it's in your best interest to bring the issue to light, let everyone know of any possible issues, then leave it up here for consideration if others have the same issue. Not make a 300 page thread about it comparing the extent of which you have the issues. It ended up as people taking countless photos and comparing them like a contest or something. I'm very sorry for anyone with this issue and i do hope you get it sorted out. For all I know mine will have the same issues.
Not trying to sweep anything under the rug, just trying to prevent the mass hysteria caused by this on the G2x.
From the arstechnica review:
A few days after the Nexus 7 hit developers' hands, a number of outlets reported that the tablet has problems with ghosting. Bringing up an image and letting it set on the screen for a couple of minutes would leave an impression of the image on the screen for up to a few minutes after the user has navigated away. We were able to recreate the problem, and found high-contrast images were particularly susceptible to imprinting ghosts on the screen.
However, the more we tried to recreate it, the faster the effect seemed to fade after we navigated away from the ghosted image. Eventually it was fading in a matter of seconds. The problem seems to be related to whether the screen is warmed up or not—if the tablet hasn't been recently used, an idle image will remain ghosted on the display for at least a couple of minutes, even as users continually change what the screen is showing. But once it's been on for a while—even if the image is left up for up to ten minutes—the ghost fades in a couple of seconds. There definitely is a problem, but it doesn't strike us as serious. That's as long as it doesn't, for instance, get worse as the tablet gets older.

What's your brightness set on. Too high will make it worse sometimes. Will also kill battery and overall screen life ( just like TVs) I say this because you also mentioned "washed out" look. This tends to happen when brightness is too high. (People do this on TVs too). High brightness is to help outdoor viewing, will actually make picture worse but people think it "pops" more. IF, this is the case try turning it down some You'll get use to it after a while. Mine at like 20% and I rarely have problems seeing screen. I do home theaters so take the advice knowing I'm not just spouting BS.

The one I picked up from Gamestop today hasn't exhibited this at all and thankfully no dead pixels either, I'd be pretty pissed honestly if it looked like that

I already played around with brightness, it's all like that from the lowest to the highest brightness settings. It's super washed out with lights all bleeding from the sides and also areas in the middle. It's like the LCD panel can't block the lights out anymore.
Note that it was perfectly normal the day i got it. It only started happening today. So I know how it should look like...
Take it back. I have no light bleed at all. I think you got a lemon I would not accept light bleed in 4 corners, the center, burn in and washed out colors. I have none of your issues so take my advice and exchange it or if they have no more inventory return it and pick one up from another store

Wow, you must work for Google or something.
So what if a user gets angry at a corporation that doesn't give a [email protected]#% amount of care of a little something called quality control. It's the 21st century and there are means by which end-users should be alerted of what they may eventually buy. The Galaxy Nexus screen issues were never mentioned anywhere but here, on xda. Even Samsung denied the issue and dubbed them as being "non-existent", so they thought they'd just swap out used phones, and now you have pissed off users who made 3-4-5 swaps already and their issues are still there.
Remember the iphone 4 reception issues and apple's reaction to them? And don't even let me even mention the ridiculous amount of epic memes that derived from it.
My point is that to prevent these things from happening, end users should get mad and spread the issues as wide as one can, so that eventually it reaches the upper levels of the company, so they can start doing something about it.
A positive example is Sony with their flagship Xperia S and it's screen issues. They admitted their fault and triggered an utter logistical nightmare to exchange or replace any faulty screen, although even they tried to "limit" it to one faulty batch.
So yes, blow these tiles of things out of proportion, because this is not a minor issue!

I was using mine all day yesterday and didn't notice that the screen was a little washed out till today, seems to have went away tho (or less noticeable now). I also have minor screen bleeds but from what I've read this is common with IPS displays.
Yeah, right, I work for Google... Good detective work there.
Obviously you didn't read or understand my post.
What I'm saying is just because there are some defective units out there, doesn't mean you need to start writing hate mail to Google, Asus, and Obama. Every product has defective units, even with QA checks. I'm just hoping the N7 users will get warranty replacements instead of just whining and complaining for 6 months when they could have just called a freaking phone number and taken care of it.
And if the company is willing to replace the product, why would you blow it out of proportion? Companies can easily find excuses not to replace your product. THAT is when you need to blow issues out of proportion.

Every device has defective screens it seems like. Honestly, it might just be cheaper for them to piss off the 2% of users who actually read stuff here than change the manufacturing process. It sucks. It really does. It forces us who are actually bothered by it to exchange til we get a good one. Which can take a few tries sometimes. It's a bummer but that's what our profit-driven society has come to.
Mostly first batches have problems, not all off them are working properly. I don't see why everyone complaining, just get it exchanged, it is £200 or $200 tablet, they aren't gonna put a super expensive display on. The IPS is already good enough for its price, heck the Kindle Fire display is terrible compared to this and I hardly see they complain.
IPS Screen burn are only temporarily compared to Amoled, use 'Dead Pixel Test' in the market to get rid of it. The app flashes different colour screens and it'll eventually go away faster. Trust me, I've had this problem before but never complained. *cough*
