i've read a good deal of threads dealing w/ upgrading the rom and the necessity of fully unlocking to do so. however, i'm a noob, so please excuse my ignorance despite reading and searching threads.
i still have a few questions...
i know i've read it, but can't find or remember how to tell if my phone is a G3 or G4...
can i use lokiwiz with my current ipl/spl 1.08, or do i need to downgrade to 1.05 or even 1.04 (sounds like less issues w/ 1.04) first?
do i need to worry about backing up my current 1.8 rom? if i ever need to downgrade again, i can find apps/utils to downgrade w/, or a rom available for download?
will unlocking void warranty?
thanks for your time and patience.
the easy way to tell if you have a G3 or G4 chipset if by looking at the numbers displayed at bootup.
G3 will look like this
ipl 1.08
spl 1.08
G4 will look like this
ipl 1.08.0001
spl 1.08.0001
if your ipl & spl are below 2.00 i.e. 1.08 then you can simply use the tool "aWizard" to CID Unlock your phone, then download and update your rom to a official latest version as this will update your ipl & spl to above 2.00 which is needed when installing a "custom" rom Hope that makes some sense! If not just ask I'll try to answer the best I can.

excellent. thank you.
i thought it was G3 but couldn't remember. yes, it's listed as 1.08, nothing after.
yes, i understand i must update to the official version first. thanks. that's why i want to know if i can/should unlock now while i have this 1.x rom before i update.
is awizard better than lokiwiz 2.b? or 3.0? i'll look at awizard again.
does unlocking generally void warranties?
Yes, Unlocking does void warranties, but Service providers don't know to look for that. If you have problems with the phone, you "Can" exchange it through your Service Provider, but I find as long as you read up and follow direction, you will get better support for your phone Here on xda-dev.

Sorry you are right its lokiwiz for CID Unlocking! I had awizard on my mind lately because Ive been playing around dumping roms and changing the pool memory So yes you need lokiwiz to cid unlock!

Yes you should unlock NOW because after updating to a 2.0 type rom its very much harder to cid unlock (in fact its impossible with going back to a 1.? version)

Use 2.b. The 3.0 version is for G4 Wizards.
thanks a lot guys. these are great answers. i hope some other noobs will check this out as i know this would help them.
one last question (i hope):
do i need to back up my current 1.8 rom? if i fully unlock now, then upgrade to t-mobile's rom, then flash a custom rom, i shouldn't need to go back to 1.8 right? even if i do, there seems to be plenty of availability for 1.x roms or apps to change the ipl/spl back, if my understanding is correct. if i need to send the phone in for repair etc, i can easily flash t-mobile's latest rom.
thanks again for your time.
side note: my phone just started experiencing an issue with the speaker/sound. after i unplugged the oem headset last time, i can't get any stock phone sounds, i.e. clicks when hitting buttons/sound when adjusting volume, including hearing the person i'm connected to. everything still works fine with the headset plugged in though. i've looked at all the settings and everything is normal or "on". the speaker still works because i can hear my programmed ring tones when someone calls, or any other sound i added for a particular operation. i'm thinking of hard resetting to see if that will fix it. i wanted to get this resolved before i start "hacking" the phone, in case i do need to take it in. any suggestions?
thanks again
i'll bump this once and then i'm going to start a new thread for help with problem i posted in the last post (bottom).
thanks guys...
This is a known issue across many HTC device types. Most likely it is a contact in your headphone jack being stuck/broken as if the headphones are still plugged in.
Options, from mild to severe:
1.) Try a Soft Reset with the headphones plugged in, then carefully remove the headphones. (This has been reported to be a solution as long as you won't be causing the problem again by using wired headphones.... )
2.) Contact cleaner (A special non-conductive cleaning product, available at any electronics store. Just ask for it.) has been suggested as a fix. Remove battery, let sit for 15 minutes to discharge stored electricity, spray just a little into headphone jack, let dry, reinstall battery, see if it works.
3.) Send phone in for repair.
Or, if more adventurous:
4.) Open phone housing and clean/repair headphone jack manually.
There may be other options, Google is your friend! (Try their advanced search, it's neat!)

reset and hold the camera button, you will see a 3 color screen...connect to the PC it should say usb in the bottom of the device screen....now install the latest update from your carrier.
PS
for future reference if you device is ended CID unlocked you do not need to use shelltools...just use the update utility provided by the rom.

thank you faria, bwesty and mfrazzz. I got to the bootloader screen and reflashed it with the latest tmobile rom. I'm sorry ive been asking so many questions, but i've been getting some mixed answers.
like someone told me (ill give the link to prove it) that flashing the latest tmobile rom will cid unlock your device. Im pretty sure thats not the case. And faria i did your latest rom and it got stuck at 99%, and i figure thats because it's not cid unlocked
i did search the forums mfrazzz and it came to no avail. You're right, if i looked really hard i could have found it somewhere, deep in a thread, but what do you expect from someone who just thought he bricked his $400 phone?
there should be a section for itself titled "I just broke my phone, how do i fix it" And inside that thread there should be every way to fix every situation. And i dont mean buried, i mean in the first post. Just a thought, it would have really helped and stopped me from bothering you guys
But as for now im going to go to the sheeltool thread and see if they can help me, i still can't get that to work.

A really useful thread (besides the WIKI is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613 it, by the way, is the very first item on the WM6 forum, this forum has Dr. P's EXCELLENT thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435 plus other useful stickies) It seems that your phone is 'working' after flashing the TMo 2.26, the first thing you need to do is find out if you have a G3 or a G4, then CID unlock appropriately. Skip the shelltool stuff for now, if you don't understand what phone you have, you will be on the road to "brick city".

CID unlocking (as far as I know) won't void your warrantee--at least it hasn't voided mine (TMo US), but YMMV. That said, it isn't a bad thing to ask for help, (cross posting is generally frowned on) we like to help people who aren't lazy or stupid.
When you do post for help, generally the more info provided the better, but I sense you know that. If your phone is a G3, I am not really sure why you are seeking help in the G4 forum....anyway.
IMHO, Faria's WM6 works really well, and I haven't had serious issues with it. There are others that love different ROMs or will cook their own, great! Nottoosmart has a good looking ROM (a Mun derivative ROM) everyone will have an opinion, I know what works well for me. So "what is the best"? Hmm Faria's WM6 (for me).

While keeping your phone CID Locked does keep you from voiding your warranty in that respect, flashing a custom rom on your phone will technically void your warranty also (although unless do something nasty to it, you should be able to get it back to the official rom and with it still CID locked then you should be fine). Example: You flash the latest and greatest WM6 on your phone and then your USB connector breaks and your SD slot doesn't work. You now can't get back to WM5 so they will know if they look. Far fetched, but I'm just throwing it out that if you are really concerned about your warranty, flashing custom roms may not be a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, I'm just saying that doing pretty much anything in the upgrading and WM6 forums here is basically voiding your warranty. But I think in most cases, the carriers don't look that close.
And please ask for assistance when you have issues. There are so many posts though, its hard to tell who has really read and who hasn't sometimes. Just remember that the stickies at the top of the forums are your friends and there is really good info there to help you get unstuck (most of the time).

Morning all
I have been offered a swap for my iPhone for a brand new boxed Orange TyTn II and Im just wondering if its worth doing?
I have had previous windows mobile phones and do like the phones so I am considering the trade, I am currently on o2.
The thing is i have read all the posts about unlocking and flashing roms etc and im a little on edge about doing it myself as im sure i will break it lol
I would basically need to sim unlock the phone and remove all the orange software as I think it looks naff!
How much work is envolved in doing what i need and how long would it take?
Sorry if im repeating a post, im not the best at forums and get lost with all this info you guys have!
Cheers
Sy
Absolutely YES!!!
There is no contest. The TyTN II wins hands down!!!
Leave well enough alone. Perhaps get a sim unlocker. Just do a search and you should find something. But don't play around with flashing roms etc. You may regret it.
Use the HTC original apps which you will find on a sticky at the beginning of this forum.
You'd be suprised how easy it is to Flash the Tytn II, the only things you have to remember is:
Flash Pof's HardSPL first,
Then Flash your ROM,
And make sur eyou have a Radio that is compatable with the ROM you've chosen (although if you have an incompatable radio, your device will still turn on and function, you just won't be able to use certain elements, calls/gps/etc)
Plus, you'll notice a MASSIVE speed increase when you've flashed to a new ROM
Hope this helps
I'm wondering if i should get a TyTn 2 now or wait for a Xperia.
Checked out the TyTn at a store a couple of days ago and i loved it, the only thing i didnt like was that it doesnt have a radio. Then i read around in this forum and came across the driver problems and the touchscreen bug and due to them i'm more inclined to wait for Xperia, but then i checked out Xperia's design and i didnt like the way the keyboard slides to, makes you operate the joystick with the right hand instead of the left and that's kind of uncomfortable.
seriously, who uses radio? I stream my Sirius satalite radio..

Yes you MUST CID unlock as well (unless it has already been done, which is doubtful if it is on Orange).
My advice...Before even getting the TYTN II, read the sticky's and Wikis in the upgrading ROM section at least 3 times over to ensure you have an idea of what you are going to need to do before even doing anything. when you think you understand it, read them again.
Then go ahead and flash any ROM you fancy and enjoy the benfits of the TYTN II voer the Iphone.
HardSPL is the replacement bootloader that allows you to install an non original ROM.
Im on T mobile and i hav heard that the ROM is not heavily branded. im just worried about bricking it. i already have the MDA viara 3.
reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679 doing hardspl, does that automaticly unlock the CID or is there another tool to do that? if so do CID unlock it first and then hardspl?
You will NEED to CID unlock AND HardSPL...Do not consider doing anything untill you are 100% certain of the steps you are performing and why, otherwise you will have a rather expensive paperweight.

Hey there,
since I'm new to the community I hope I'm not doing it wrong
I will receive my new Herald within the next days and now I'm seeking for all the stuff I will need then.
1. Hard-Spl. I don't get it. What is it? Is it some kind of firmware update or whatever? The ROM's thread says that I would need SPL 4 or later to successfully finish the Update but I can't find that SPL application in version 4+ :/
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437385 - http://www.evolvers.net/Herald_Roms/Version 7.7/ => I'd like to use that ROM. But I'm not too sure whether to use Manilla2D or Omnia.
3. What if I needed to send my device back for warranty reasons. Is there some way to flash back the standard Win Mobile 5.0?
I hope I will get your attention!
Regards,
Chris
Hey there,
A friend of mine just told me about flashing ROMs literally a few days ago. I did my first successful flash just yesterday and I am very happy that I did. FYI, yes I am using a stock TMobile Wing from 2007.
Rom's are not interchangeable across different phone models as far as I know. So you need to get ROMs made for the wing a.k.a. the Herald. Any Rom for the Herald should work.
Just remember one thing that I forgot to do, make sure that you back up your data. I forgot to do this and lost all of my data. Luckily, I did not have any pictures or music that I was too sad to lose. However, I did lose my contacts. Again luckily, I had an old Sim card from last year that had my contacts on it, so I was able to get back 90% of my phonebook, except for a few people that changed numbers or new contacts. So be sure to save anything you want to keep somewhere else.
I am pretty technically savvy, but I must say that flashing the Rom did take me several hours. The process itself only takes about 10 minutes, but it took hours to figure out what type of Rom I needed and how to exactly flash it. You will see many people trying to tell you that you need to know your IPL and SPL version, and there is no way to know this until you start flashing! It wasn't until I did my first accidental flash that it showed me this information, and this ended up being my first successful flash. After trying for several hours the night before and not succeeding, I guess that's why it slipped my mind that flashing successfully would erase all my data.
The one that actually worked for me was the Canonyang Rom. In the link below please look at post number 216, and you will see a link to download the ROM that worked for me. The file is "HardSpl_WM6".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332413&page=22
I tried to flash directly to open touch, and no matter what I tried it was not successful. When I accidentally tried this Canonyang flash it worked successfully the first time, and after that now I was able to flash to any other Rom.
I am currently running open touch light version 6.5 because I read in another thread that it's supposed to be the fastest. I don't need a lot of features so I'm happy with what it has, and it is much, much faster than the stock T-Mobile Rom.
Since you are now getting it, yes, warranty is an issue for you. I am very new to all this, but from what I gather, once you flash, it does void the warranty. Perhaps someone else can answer if there is a stock TMobile rom, that you can flash back to. However, since the roms are digitally signed, I'm not sure that by even doing that, if TMobile can tell you modded it, and therefore elect not to honor your warranty. I guess that's a risk you have to decide if it's worth it or not. IMHO, I found out about rom flashing this week, and my warranty was up last month. However, if I had found out about this during my warranty period, I would have still done it. The Tmobile stock rom is sooo slow, compared to these roms. If you've never used these roms, you'd think like hey, it's got some bugs, but it's not that bad. But if you've used them, you're never going back to stock rom again.
I apologize if there are any typos, as I am using voice to text recognition software that I am testing. I thought I'd help you out by writing this as well as I test it. Good luck and let us know if you have any questions, we're all here to help.
Hey,
thanks for all the information. Was very helpful. I decided to you the ROM from that link. Should work, shouldn't it?
The only thing I don't get is how to get to SPL4+ :/ I heared of different methods of SPLing. Like Hard SPL and USPL. Can you bring light into that cave?
Cheers.
Hey there,
Your link goes to the Open Touch thread. The link I'm referring to, is this one:
http://rapidshare.de/files/38148213/HardSpl_WM6.rar.html
As I said, I was NOT able to flash directly from stock to OTP. I tried many methods, and Canonyang was the only one that worked for me. After I successfully flashed to CY, then I was able to flash to OTP without issue. But in theory yes, any Herald rom's should work fine.
In regards to IPL/SPL, my wing is from September 2007, and I had IPL/SPL both above 4. I had NO WAY to verify this before flashing. When I initiated the flash for CY, and the wing rebooted, it was THEN I saw my IPL/SPL versions. I'm sure yours will be at least v4.
Actually as I write this to you, I remember a critical step I forgot to tell you. You need to Application Unlock your device as well. This is probably what I was missing in my failed attempts. After I did that, then the CY flash worked. I got that information, from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356295
So I would suggest following the steps there first, then trying the link earlier to flash to CY, then flash to anything else. This is the procedure that worked for me. Good luck!
Hey there and thanks again for that bunch of information

What does that mean then? I do not have to HardSPL my phone? But still, would you mind telling my step by step (And I really mean step by step^^) how to HardSPL a device? I really do not want to brick my phone directly at the beginning.
Oh and what should I rather be using, SoftSPL or HardSPL?
Cheers.
Hey there,
Sorry but I just flashed my device less than a week ago as I mentioned. I don't have many of the answers you ask, because I'm asking them myself. I don't know the diff between Hard vs. Soft SPL.
The file I linked you to earlier, is a hardspl, as denoted by its filename "HardSpl_WM6". It hardspl flashes to the canonyang rom. It was then I saw the IPL/SPL versions, and then was able to flash to other roms.
FYI, I was concerned about bricking my device as well. But during the roughly 5 hours I was trying to flash it correctly, every time the flash failed, it did NOT brick. It just errored on the pc, and the Wing itself just restarted and went back to the stock TMobile rom. It never actually bricked. Make sure you do the application unlock though; I think that's a step that people may not do and could cause it to brick. Good luck.
It seems that it is possible to flash the HD2 with with out HardSpl, Is it possible to do this with the Tilt2/TouchPro2's ?
Anyone interesting taking on this project ?
I will offer up a donation to those make this a realty..
This is worth reading, it is possible to flash without Hardspl, but it is on the HD2, Here is the thread discussing it, hopefully this will be possible on the tilt2 in the near future.

I don't know. HSPL is superbly easy, and if your device is too broken to see what the SPL is, you don't have to worry about the repair center seeing what SPL is loaded. If it's still a usable albeit somewhat borked device, just find the stock SPL/ROM/radio and flash that mofo befo' shippin' it off. Hell, you're in USA and on AT$T, too. Phone insurance for thew win, dude. Went from kaiser to rhodium for $125, and free after customer service fu*ked with the wrong mofo.
I never see the point of anything but Hard SPL. I like that I never have to worry about bricking my device, no matter what I flash.
Flashing ROMs via SSPL is has always been reported as unstable. For that reason no-one has created SSPL's that allow ROM flashing in the past. Cotulla must have found something new, or everyone got lucky.
A more practical approach might be the USPL aka SplXploit (assuming that's not what Cotulla did). stepw has plenty of information regarding it on this forum, as does itsme on his personal site.
It's not going to be easy, and will require a lot more hacking ability and time than I have.

Bumping causing solving this will making trying new roms a whole lot easier ....
BTT it seems that is a good bit of success of flashing without Hardspl, but it is on the HD2, if it can be done on the HD2 then is should possible on the Tilt2 / touch Pro or any other HTC phone..
I will offer up a donation to those make this a realty.

HardSPL takes about 3 minutes, and you only have to do it once. So I don't see how being able to skip it would make it "a whole lot easier".

If you had taken the time to read the link i provided, you would have seen this..
This is an easy way to flash unsigned OS images to the HD2. It should not void your warranty like HSPLs do, because it does not change your SPL. I know for a fact, that repair centers are advised to check the SPL version number on the device.

and it would be "free" except for all the Voluntary donations the chef would receive from this..

I don't see how that makes things a "whole lot easier". It looks to be about as complex a procedure as installing HardSPL, except it has to be done every time you flash, whereas once you have HardSPL:
1) Flashing via USB requires fewer steps
2) Flashing from MicroSD is possible
3) You can flash radios
So tell me how it is a "whole lot easier" when the initial step is approximately the same complexity, and subsequent ROM flashes do not have the reduction in complexity that HardSPL provides?
The problem with the HardSPL is that it many people are having problems and they do not respond to support requests anymore, even with donations. That is why were looking to do it without HardSPL.
sounds like a coup is about to happen!
I wonder if anyone has even though about doing a port of this for the Rhodium... It would be great because it wouldn't void warranty (as far as I can tell) and nobody and use HardSPL for crap anyone because the tick system isn't checked and donating doesn't work.

What would be the stability of a ROM that was flashed after hardSPL was installed with softSPL?

So long as the SPL you have (Hard or Stock) matches closely with the original one HTC intended for that ROM, you will be fine.
HardsSpl DOES NOT WORK FOR me AND NOBODY WANTS TO HELP ME

Please see the HardSPL sticky thread, which is the correct place for this, and where I have tried to help you.

So you are saying that even if I donate for hardspl it won't work?
90% chance that if you're having problems installing HardSPL, this approach is as likely to (if not more likely to) fail for you.
The only issue I've seen with HardSPL is that on some phones (such as stock Tilt 2s), you can't install it without first installing enablerapinew.cab (or something like that, I forget the exact name). This is mentioned in the HOWTOs for HardSPL, and would likely affect this approach too.

Must do automatic flash while synced with pc also.
I asked about this a while ago and got the same kinda responses
