[Q] What's with these ROMs, CID unlocks, and stuff? - Touch Diamond2, Pure Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I understand what the terms mean.
ROM would be the base that stores the OS and all the derivatives.
CID unlock allows any ROM to be installed, regardless of your carrier.
Now I was looking at this and I have to install this ROM on my friend's Touch Diamond2.
How do I know if the phone is CID unlocked already? What other things are pre-requisites to installing this ROM? I'm completely a new person at this.. so instead of guiding me to other threads and guides, please tell me how everything works in this departments, and what I'd have to do to get down that ROM on the phone (if anything like registering or something of that sort).

If you click the link in my signature "TD2 Guides" I have a pretty good guide to flashing HSPL (CID Unlocking) and flashing ROMs.

simply see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715864
but basically you just need Hard-SPL. if the phone already has it, then it will show "OliNex" text in bootloader (tricolour) screen.

hey i use this one and it works

Confused about ROM install

Just after I got my 8125 I upgraded the ROM to 2.25. I didn't unlock anything. Its running fine. Now I'm interested to try a different ROM. I understand I will need to CID unlock my device. Here is where I'm confused, if it is possible or not after upgrading to 2.25? Can I follow the steps to downgrade my ROM and unlock the CID?
I have searched and been reading alot but I'm still a bit confused, so please be gentle as I ask for some guidance. I have experience modifying Motorola phones, but am new to PocketPC. Any help is appreciated.
Good if you can provide info on how you upgraded your unit (e.g. with the providers official ROM or with the software and ROMS in this forum, etc)
And how you intended to down grade your ROM? You also mentioned the 'steps' to follow, of which steps are you refering to?
And, why do you want to have your phone CID unlocked? CID lock will not bug most people unless they are going for a ROM flashing. CID lock is different from `phone lock` or `SIM lock`.
Just incase you are wonder, what is CID, ... don't ask me. I have no idea at all Seriously.
I upgraded a stock 8125 (G3) to the Cingular 2.25 official ROM. I would like to install a summiter or mr. clean custom ROM. Searching through the messages here I'm unable to determine for certain if I'm able to CID unlock from 2.25 on my own (for free), but I get the impression I cannot. I just want to know for sure before attempting anything further.
I won't need step-by-step instruction...just need to know what my options are at this point.
Last nite I tried to install the summiter ROM without the bootloader. And the install went fine and completed 100% without error. But after the reboot I found the flash didn't hold, it was basically like a hard reset.
First download and install the Cingular 1.8 Rom
If that works fine then you should be able to CID unlock.
If not then try downloading and installing the "Button 1.05" Rom.
If either of these dowgrades worked for you, searck for LokiWiz (use ver 0.2 for CID unlock) and follwo the instructions.
Next if you want to SIM Unlock find LokWiz MSL 0.3 as it does a better SIM unlock than the older LokiWiz. Again follow the instructions.
Now you should be good..
Sorry if I wasn't clear, but its the downgrading I am concerned about. I'm not certain if it is possible to downgrade (including bootloader) from 2.25 without the device being CID unlocked..?

Thanks for your help! I'll let you know how it goes.
Success! SIM/CID unlocked.

SPL 2.24

OS 2.24.10.1
Thanks kyphur, for taking a moment to point a noob down the right path.

CID Unlocking and ROM info on uk Tmobile Vario

OK I'm thinking about trying a different ROM, I have alot of programs installed that are included in some of the ROM's on here, so I guessing I would save some memory by installing a custom ROM? also removes some of the Tmobile crap? Will it be safe to install any ROM on here?
I dont understand all the different names (aku etc)
I have SIM unlocked it, but not tried to CID unlock it yet.
I have IPL/SPL 2.21 on the loader screen, is this a G3 model?
Installed with latest Tmobile ROM (This was wireless G enabled)
I have searched on here for info, and found some, but because its a delicate procedure, I would like to be sure before I risk it.
Can someone tell me how to CID unlock it and install a ROM?
Should I even bother, or stick with the Tmobile one?
Thanks

To The Experts

Hello all....thank you for this great forum........I am a new user here and I have read many posts but didn't find the solution to my problem.....I hope You guys will help.....!!
I want to know.....how can I check that my phone is CID locked.......I have a G4 MDA.........and my phone is not SIM locked.........!!
One more qusetion....Is the wm5 AKU 3.3 rom safe for me......??
THANKS IN ADVANCE..........
no rom is safe. they all make you grow feathers and cluck like a chicken.
if you want your phone CID unlocked...just go through the steps to unlock it and if it's already unlocked then trying to unlock it again will do no harm (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284292)
concerning the AKU 3.3 ROM by Faria/Molski...no cooked ROM is 100% safe but this is as close as you're gonna get to it
*edit* this would probably best be posted in the G4 subforum though
Thankyou for answering but my question is still unanswered....
I just want to know.......Is there any way to check whether my phone is CID locked or not........
Simple rule: if you didn't unlock... it's CID-locked
I know only one way (not preffered). Flash a 3.x G4 rom with only an OS in it. If you're OS version doesn't change... you CID-locked.
there is no safe way to check your CID. You can try flashing your phone. If it went
(a) unsuccessfull OR
(b) brick your phone
it means your phone is CID locked.

Am I picking the wrong ROM?

For the past couple of weeks I have tried to upgrade to WM6 using a few of the ROMS found here in the forum, but each one I tried failed with an error in the update process.
Correct me, if I am wrong, but if I can flash the button ROM, do the lokiwiz, flash to the TMOBILE 2.26 then my device is unlocked and I should be able to flash any of the WM6 ROMS in the forum.
Any advice from the mentors in this group would be greatly appreciated for a new flashing junkie.
The lokiwiz only unlocks the SIM LOCK. For you to be able to flash any ROM (without any IPL/SPL), you need to CID UNLOCK it, they are different locks.
So, you are saying that if I can't flash the other ROMS, i.e. Black Diamond, Xm64, etc, but I can flash button and the Tmobile 2.26 original then I am not CID unlocked?
Thanks for your assistance.
Will I be able to flash your new REV 5?

Yes, but you need to CID Unlock first to flash any custom ROM.
Ok, thanks, I will try again. I just saw the pics from your new rev 5.0 looks great, I can't wait to try it.
update 1
Well, I couldn't get the rev 5 to load so I just went for broke and tried the Black diamond. It worked like a charm. Apparently I missed a step in the sticky and did not do the CID unlcok at the right spot. You must do it when the IPL is 1.xx not 2.xx. (I think that was it anyway. )
Regardless, I think I am truly addicted because I am back on the forum searching and readin about the different ROMS available.
Thanks for all the assistance.

Method to Identify CID Lock Setting?

A quick search of the wiki and kaiser forums didn't find anything related to this so here goes...
I have a gray market Kaiser bought about 1 yr ago and it came with a 1.81.707 WWE ROM installed. The Network Wizard displays countries such as Australia, India, HK, Singapore, etc. so I'm guessing the phone was originally targeted for sale in that area of the world.
I recently tried to upgrade to the official 6.1 WWE ROM, but the install failed with a message about the ROM not matching the phone. I'm assuming the phone has been CID locked so it won't work with the new WWE ROM and I'd like to know what official ROM would actually work with this phone.
Is there any non-permanent method of finding out what the CID Lock is currently set to? A couple of the unlocker apps appear to provide this facility however I'm only interested in using official ROMs with this phone. Therefore I haven't run any of the SIM/CID/SPL utilities available in the other Kaiser forums.
You need to read the Wiki and make sure you HardSPl before any flashing is done, I would also recommend you get it sercurity unlocked. All this information can be found in the Wiki.

Thanks for the pointer to the wiki and on HardSPL. After watching the forums for the past couple of years and reading the wiki I'm well aware of the recommendations around flashing new unofficial ROMs.
However my question is slightly different. I'm trying to find out if it is possible to find out what the CID lock setting for the phone is without having to load HardSPL or one of the other related unlock tools.
Any ideas are appreciated.
As far as I know it can only be done with these apps. OliPro has a SIM/CID unlocker that you can use. You dont have to unlock the handset if you dont want to but it will show you the current CID code. Hope this helps
