Warranty refusal - help (check photos inside) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I accidentally left my i9000 home and went on holidays. It was 1 week "home alone". When I got back i charged it and started using it again.
Then after a day the battery ran out again. I needed to check a contact real quick so I managed to switch it on and boot it right until i got the contact, then battery was drained.
When I got home to charge it.. DEAD phone, not even the Jig could save it.
I sent it to warranty and they refused to cover the malfunction because they detected humidity (they sent the screenshot below)
please check h__p://img263.imageshack.us/img263/1284/i9000.jpg
When i got it again i opened it and saw that i can only get the white stuff out by scraping it and that the black spot is actually (or seems like) a chunk of burnt chip
This is what i saw h__p://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4475/i90002.jpg
I never dropped it in water, or did something wrong to it. The only humidity it may have gotten was by having it in the bathroom while i showered.. But so do my other phones!
Do you guys think it's really humidity or do I have a fighting chance?
Thanks for your input, and sorry for the pics, i can't post outside links yet, please replace h__p with http

Bump!
I appreciate any help guys >,< i want to send if back to warranty with a claim, if it really isn't humidity
Thanks

Get them to prove it is humidity, much cheaper for them to replace, consumer rights, use whats out there, threaten them, harass them dont let them win, its that simple!

That white stuff does NOT look like humidity. It looks more like :
A: thermal paste and overheated chip
B: superglue spill (but being inside the case, this theory must be dropped).
I would say you should insist to fix it on warranty.

Thanks guys, i'll try to harass them. It really doesn't seem humidity. What it seems is that they're taking advantage of me!
The phone here costs 329€ and they're asking 220€ no fix it

You should ask them to prove it to you that the white stuff is humidity. From what I know, they have to prove you're guilty, not the other way around (where you should prove you're innocent).

Btw, does the i9000 have a humidity detector sticker or some other tech?
I went on holidays and when i came back i opened the phone again and all that white stuff.. just vanished!
If it was humidity, as in limestone residues, it wouldn't vanish!
What the hell was that!?
Anyways, regarding the humidity detector, i saw in one forum one guy with a small WHITE square inside the battery cover.
In the service manual the same square is BLACK and mine is also BLACK
Is this one? And what does white and black mean?
Thanks again

I have no idea what the square is for (mines also black)
But i think you have a fighting chance of winning this, Like said before, they must prove your guilty in order to refuse you warranty.
If you contact them demanding it to be fixed as your are 100% sure the phone has never seen water. Then someone's gotta' give and its gotta be them..
just bullsh!t them saying your seeking legal advice regarding this, and say "do i look stupid enough to leave a $400 phone near water ?? "
if they say yes, you must seek revenge

HELP/Assistance needed for a rare tilt issue

I ve done a fair share of research and am getting mixed answers from these threads. I am in a situation where i have to call AT&T and get a new tilt sent to me, but i fear in my situation i will eventually get charged for the new unit. Here's my story...
got my tilt and been flashing it with some of the beautiful roms created... and i am a very happy camper... until one day... i was a bit drunk and i entered my friends backyard for the first time and immediately walked into the swimming pool(please dont ask, it was plain retarded). i fell in and popped back out immediately and took my phone out of my pockets and i believe i took the battery out after about 2 minutes. I dried it up for 2 days... with about 2-3 hours of hair drying... and finally decided to pop the batt. in the phone. WALLLAAAAA!!!! it worked and i was too happy. shortly after that... later that night i left my phone on my desk and the next day i got the RLOD.... the red light... yes... i want to call AT&T and have them send me a new one... but i m very certain they will charge me for the phone after they find out it was wet... or after they find out it was flashed with a diff rom. How accurate is this and is there a way for me to get my TILT back without spending any money that i dont have. please help?!?!
there's a moisture sensor under the battery, i think it turns pink if it has been exposed to water. if it is i guess you're SOL
white with pink dots!??!
The moisture detector is where you're "dead in the water" (ha ha)..
Even though with the RLOD you wouldn't have been able to reflash the shipping Rom you'd probably have been okay BUT they do check for water damage.
You're better off just buying a new tilt instead of paying the same price for a refurb (which is what they'll send you).
can someone send me a picture of their tilt with the battery taken out so i can compare what the moisture sticker looks like compared to mine... i m gonna figure out a way to "cheat the system" i guess... i really cant afford to buy another "regular" cell phone let alone a tilt.
here you go
Here is mine. The red outline shows my water damage sticker.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1977315&postcount=6
ok my sticker definitely has pink dots on it... but its not entirely pink... you think i can slide by changing that sticker to a normal white one... because my phone worked after it had a lil water... haha but after that i got the RLOD. i really regret taking my tilt for a swim... accidentally that is.

Water Damaged Diamond... what next?

Hello all, while drunk at the beach this weekend I accidentally went into the water with my Touch Diamond in my pocket... stupid... I know, did I mention I was drunk? Anyways, the current issue at hand is what to do with my screwed up cell phone.
I took the backing, battery and SIM card out of the phone and let it dry out as much as I could since the weekend. When I turned it on this morning, the "smart mobility" text appears for a few seconds, but the phone shuts off shortly after that. Do batteries usually break from water damage, as well?
If anyone has any advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone know of a legit place that can repair this? Is there anything I can do to try and remedy this problem? Or would you recommend I just sell/ditch this one and get a new phone? Thanks a lot.
Have you tried charging the battery? that might explain it only booting for a second, the other explanation is that it's fried the ROM chips and only the bootloader works.
It's not looking good, is it under warranty?
Disassemble your Diamond completely (manual floating around somewhere in this forum), clean all pieces using one of these isopropanol-brush-thingies, reassemble, turn it on - and pray. Any year - a new battery might be a good idea. No promises on anything of that though. The diamond is a very integrated piece of technology and you might have short-circuited something on one of the PCBs really. No guarantee that everything will work as usual even if the device comes up as well.
Warranty seems to be out of the question - I guess virtually any repair center will notice residue of loads of salt water on the first look inside...
That's true, I meant to say insurance, heh.
Strip it down Salt water is very and I mean very corrosive ! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing this . Waranty repair will be expensive.
Clean with an alchol based cleaner as advised but you must ensure you get all the salt out. To see it boot means that the screen has survived ( Amazed by this ) .
Best of luck , oh and if it does not work are you insured for accidental damage on personal items on your household insurance. This could be the next route
I have the same problem with my Tytn 2. It got wet during the "Oranje" Party in Basel, when the firemen were "cooling" down the fans...
It boots..but as soon as it has booted, you here a lot of "bling..bling..bling.." and it shuts down.. the batterie doesn't charge..
You recommend to open and clean it with alcool? Actually I'm not sure if it was washed by the firemen or by my own alcool .ehhehe..
I have a Diamond now, but if I get it back to work, I would sell it on ebay.
Regards

Luckily I was at lake Michigan in Chicago (fresh water), for whatever that's worth, so I'm not really worried about salt corroding anything away. I bought it off eBay unlocked, I did buy insurance but, naturally, I'm pretty sure that this water damage won't be covered.
Sounds like taking it apart and cleaning it might be my best bet. Do you guys think that any cell phone repair place would be able to help me out? Anyone know of a good cell phone repair shop (in the U.S.)? Thanks for the help thus far guys, I really appreciate it
Firstly remove the battery and SIM, please do not try to power up or charge again as you might have already damaged it beyond repair.
Isopropanol or IPA is what you need (100% Alcohol), you can get this from your local chemist for about £5 a bottle.
You need to strip your phone down completely and use an anti static PCB brush to clean the whole lot (Buy it from Maplin), submerge it in a plate of IPA (excluding the screen) while cleaning. As for the warranty sticker remove this by first heating with a hair drier, then uing a Stanley knife point to remove it.
Once it’s all been cleaned and dried in air, re-assemble and power up. If it fails to work take it back for a warranty replacement. As the warranty sticker is intact, and all the evidence of water damage will have been removed, they should replace it for you without a problem.

Pretty sure? I would check if I was you before doing anything else with it. If insurance doesnt cover water damage, what does it cover? Phone insurance is so expensive i thought they covered everything like theft and accidental damage, I thought the idea was a warranty wont cover you if you break the phone but insurance will.
I'm thinking it may be an idea to check before you do anything else so they dont say "Well we cover water damage, but now youve taken apart the phone we cant cover you"

All the evidence, that is, apart from the water-sensitive tab which I am assuming you didn't know about...? (behind the tab for attaching a strap)

or doese he mean "Swimming Diamond" ... Is that a new feature we overlocked? I think it's time for another entry in the tweaklist... *rofl*
My warranty does not cover accidental water damage, that is for sure.
I charged the battery up over the weekend and tried turning it back on, and, to my utter amazement, the phone completely powered on. I got to all of my menus and was able to use all of the programs that I opened, even the WiFi worked.
However, the functionality of the touch screen is quite screwed up. I don't know if its shorting out or what but there are basically "ghost taps" and other unintentional actions happening all the time. For example, if I were to just leave it at the home screen it would eventually scroll to another menu, open the start pull-down menu, automatically open the calendar and start doing random ****, etc.
Does anyone know how to fix the touch screen or have any ideas on how to replace one? I have a faint hope that this thing might not be beyond saving.. thanks a lot people

Maybe try to re-calibrate the touch screen?
Don't give up hope, sometimes these things can take days, even weeks to fully dry and become functional. My mom had a sony ericsson somethingorother that she loved, dropped in the tub, didn't work for like a month or more... She'd check it every week or so to see, and slowly the features started coming back... Little by little, more and more buttons would respond (without activating 2 or 3 at a time). Well, long story short (too late?) works 100% now. I don't think water damage is a reparable occurrence, but DON'T sell your Diamond for parts or anything like that, keep it around and check back periodically. Best of luck.
there is a little white sticker onto the battery.
If it goes RED it shows HTC that the Phone/Battery went into the water.
This allows HTC to avoid repair "sunk" phones

Should also be one on the phone... If not, there's your solution. New battery + deny any water damage = Free replacement.

Haha you're all over it... Yeah, I had a feeling they'd have something in the phone, they'd never make it THAT easy.

Question regarding G1 "stickers"

Message cannot be displayed
AFAIK that sticker is just so they can tell you not to waste your time sending it in for coverage (as in they can ask what color it is, and if you say red, they can tell you forget it - void). However, the service technicians will probably still open up your phone and can judge for themselves if there is evidence of water damage to the electronics. So, you can replace the sticker, try to be sneaky about it, and who knows..... might work?
I believe the one inside the battery cover and the one on the battery itself are the only color changing water damage indicating stickers.
Battery and battery bay are the only 2 that Tmobile will see, but there are at least 2 more inside on the mainboard/connectors and possibly in the lcd area as well. They are a bit different than the iPhone style ones as well, I dont think bleach will help. Not that I would endorse that anyway...but still.
Great info. Thanks for the suggestions.

Warranty Advice please!

Hello Guys and Girls,
I recently sent my X1 back to SE for repair as the screen was glitching whilst in active calls (something I couldn't fix through repeated flashing from SE's update service).
I gave the call centre a ring and they advised me to send the unit to my nearest service centre, which I did. At the start of the week, I received an email from the service centre which read "Notification that unit is unrepairable" as the subject and the first thought that popped in to my head was new handset.. Lovely! Reading the email, I found the engineer had concluded that my unit was "Un-Repairable under the Warranty of the Manufacturer" and I was gob smacked, that was definitely not the response I was expecting.
So I gave the call centre a ring for an explanation of the reason and the lady pointed out that the engineer had found cracks in the resin. Now, this is not the case resin that most have complained about but the resin used to cover the main board's components. Yeah I've dropped the phone a few times but no more than most and it's usually in a sleeve when it does fall, so consumer damage seems like a poor excuse! So I asked the lady to escalate my problem because I don't believe that it was caused by me.
I received a letter from SE (sent recorded, signed for!) simply re-iterating what the lady on the phone had said to me and that "Unfortunately we are unable to comment as to how any form of damage has occurred we can only comment on the findings upon completion of the investigation". The best she could offer me was "a gesture of goodwill" by sending my unrepaired handset back free of charge (otherwise 11.75GBP).
I don't really care if they repair or replace, I just want my X1 back in a working condition. What can I do to make that happen? Any hints or tips I can take on board before I respond?
P.S: I’m having to use a Nokia 2330 until this is resolved!
Regards,
- DiLLio

first of all: I'm sorry to hear that your xperia x1 is not working properly anymore. All I can say is that its gonna be a tough fight since...

what else is there to say? Reading your post in my eyes you could have caused the damage and here it really is goodwill you have to count on. And obviously it's too expensive for them to repair under warranty...so they will do everything to blame the damage on you...In my opinion you could only ask what they want for the reparation.
Good Luck!
Uhm, dude, you dropped the phone... That's pretty much there is to it. Dropping a phone, will break it over time. Stop being clumbsy, in the year and a half, I've dropped my X1 once, and that was bc it fell out of my coat pocket - luckily it was in a leather pouch.
Your only option is really to try and convince SE that the resin cracks are stress cracks from normal wear and tear, but that's going to be pretty much impossible to do if you told them you dropped it, or if your casing is all messed up from drop marks.
Thanks for the replies. I stand by the fact that it wasnt because of its time with the floor.
After receiving my phone back from K+N, I've had an engineer open it so that I can see and snap some pictures of the main board and satisty myself that it is infact what they say.
And would you believe it, not a mark on the main board. Nothing.
Gave a SE a call again and argued my point. Apparantly I won't be able to photograph these cracks. Why? Because they aren't visible to cameras. Haha! Okay, so what are they visbile to?!
"Resin which portects the components" would be the top coating/layer and, atleast, indeed be visible to the naked eye. They used a clear resin to coat the main board which would explain why a WORKING main board would show no signs; however, a stressed clear resin would turn opaque and they claim cracks in the resin would definately be visible. We saw nothing!
I've attached the photos and I'd love some insight into what we've missed.
Well now you've definatley voided your warranty if you took it apart...
They wouldnt try and fake anything - i've sent my Xpera to K and N about 3 times now and every time they've got it back to me within a week - First time was cracks - second was keyboard and third was camera. I'm sure these people know what they are talking about - all you can do now is make do.

I agree, that would be highly illegal and immoral, but I dont believe that every one of their engineers is adequately capable of fault finding correctly. In my case, I got one who cant tell left from right. Can you see these cracks that they claim, or anything off on the main board for that matter?
I have exactly the same problem. Only difference is mine has never been dropped. The woman in the call centre said she would escalate it. Let's wait and see.
Well they clearly hadn't even bothered to open mine up so I hope they do that for you. If your casing is showing signs of cracking, theres a lengthy thread on here complaining about the build quality of the outer case.
The original issue I was having disappeared after I had the unit independently inspected so I solved the problem without SE Nice to know that they actually check the devices before they make their decisions though(!)
If you're having the same issue, I can only assume some sort of undue pressure is being put on a connection/component and causing the distortion on the screen. Else, it really is a more costly fault!
For cases like this I have a legal insurance (lawyers, expert's testimonies...). Not that I actually had to resort to it, but in case I'd have to... heh. But newer admit you had dropped your phone, no, no, you always kept it in a secured leather box barely using it at all

This is a different issue. It's not the case thats cracked it the resin thats cracked.
Nobody got any advice?
Hi i have just had a letter back from K & N saying my Sony W995 was not repairable under manufacturers warrenty, due to the engineer finding cracks in the resin. Is this a standard excuse as i have never dropped my phone and the reason for returning it to Sony was the Number 3 on the keypad was not working.
I have spoken to a girl on the phone and she says she will escilated the problem and has gave me a reference number lets see what happens.
As I expected i got a letter back from sony saying they stand by their decision that the warrenty did not cover the repair of my phone as crack were found in the resin and as a gesture of goodwill they would return my phone unrepaired free of charge.

Droid Bionic Water Damage

My wife rang in the new year by dropping her phone in the toilet on New Year's Eve! It took the phone, cleaned it and put it in a bag with rice and got it working again with no issues.
Since it is a company phone, they replaced it for her..no charge. So, Im left with a Bionic that is working perfectly.....except....it has dark "streaks" on the screen that are irritating and very noticeable on lighter backgrounds.
I do not think it is inside the screen, I think the phone itself is damaged from the drop in the water. Both water damage indicators are of course red but, other than the screen looking like it does..phone is operating fine other than that.
I reset it back to factory once she activated the new one and am going to add it to my account if I can either fix that screen issue or live with it.
Any idea of what steps would need to be taken in order to correct this issue? I was going to take a photo of the screen but, since I reset it back to factory, it now is just going to the "please wait, this may take a few minutes" screen since there is no active service on the phone.
Dont want to activate it yet until I see what options I have to fix the screen.
First, you can bypass activation by tapping all four corners of the Android logo screen, starting with the top left and going clockwise. That should make it a bit easier to take pictures
Second, it's possible that the damage is not to the screen itself, and that dismantling the digitizer/glass layer will make the best course of action more obvious. This is obviously only something to do if you're reasonably confident in your steady hand and don't mind the possibility of something breaking (and honestly, it was a free phone, so why not, just for the experience?) If it turns out to be, say, a stain on the inside of the digitizer layer, or residual water between the two layers, you have a pretty easy problem to fix.
iFixit has some good guides:
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Motorola_Droid_Bionic
Good luck!
Water damage indicators can be cleared by using bleach.
Shows how much I know about this Bionic eh? I did not know I could bypass that wizard..thanks for that!
now then, this is the strangest thing, the screen issues are not what they were...they are still there but, not anywhere close to what they were. Now it is mainly in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and those are more like smudges than anything.
Very strange. Will try to post a pic once I get off work. Tried to get a decent one that shows what I am talking about now but, cant even get it to show up!
hmm, might try that as well once I get an idea if I am able to correct the screen issues, thanks!

It sounds like you have water marks between the screen and the digitizer. Its really not that difficult to tear apart a phone and clean that.I do screen repairs for friends and clients just buy the tools and then just take your time and go through the process.I'm sure by now someone will have a tutorial on youtube

I washed a resistve touchscreen phone a full cycle with the close. The screen had the same issue with streaks that almost looked lke clouds. They disappeared completely after about a week.
