I'm kind of shocked at how few apps are available for Tizen in Samsung Apps. Not counting clocks there are 14 and even Samsung's own ChatOn is missing. Does everyone who upgraded to Tizen show the same apps I do (listed below)? Is this all there is for the GG2 also or is some kind of restriction in place that's only displaying some Tizen apps for GG1 users? I'm hoping it's the latter and more apps show up soon.

Its almost the same apps available with android, except CNN, Line, News Republic, golf apps, run tastic and other useless apps. Still, Im keeping android unless theres a way to get back to android after testing Tizen.
I'm pretty sure there are some apps available in Samsung store (as opposed to just through gear manager)?

When you access Samsung Apps through Gear Manager it filters out all but what's available for or already installed on your Gear. In moving to Tizen I lost:
Peel Remote
Path
CNN
Glympse
TripIt
Vivino
Hopefully they or similar apps will be back. Samsung may have burned bridges with app developers by overselling Android on the GG1 only for them to develop something no one used (based on limited sales) and then became throw away with the move to Tizen.
So what I posted is what's available for everyone regardless of region? I was kind of hoping since my CSC was mismatched there may have been more apps and I just couldn't see them.

Thanks for that. I have a U.S. Gear with a UK ROM on it. So either my device being a GG1, being from the U.S. where Tizen isn't even released yet, or the UK ROM potentially being a victim of app release timing, are probably affecting what's offered in Samsung Apps. Hopefully more apps will be exposed or available soon. Moving the GG1 to Tizen adds several hundred thousand users so maybe that'll entice developer's. Time will tell.
There are tons more apps for the Gear 2 Neo. I have that. I'm in the US and also still have my Gear. As mentioned before, no update for US Gears yet. So, since I have the Gear 2 Neo with lots of apps and more each day, I'm in no rush for my Gear to get updated to Tizen.

Why are the app stores inconsistent if the OS is now the same? So frustrating sometimes.

I confirmed this with Samsung Support this morning after I asked why there were so few apps available to Gear 1 owners who converted to Tizen.

In my opinion is up to developers to add support "flag" for gear.
I think that most apps for gear 2 will work, but at the moment they are not configured to. The manifest file should be changed and inside Samsung Apps Store the Gear flag should be added.
That's all.
And can where can we ge download wgt files to install them?

As of today a bunch of more apps are available in Gear manger and Samsung app store for Tizen on Gear 1. I see that most of them is updated on June 9:th with Galaxy Gear 2 support and does work on Gear.

My Sleep Genius works.
Are you able to go into Gear Manager under My Apps and delete it from there? Click the trash can on the top right and then select Sleep Genius (provided it appears in Gear Manager)

To uninstall goto your app manager and uninstall it in there.
Then go back to Samsung Apps and install it again.

That stinks, I have the gear 2 and a note 3 in the US. I have 77 apps just in the entertainment section of the app store in gear manager. There are more added every day. Don't know why.
I came from a gear 1, I liked it, but I had 3 that started showing a green area in the middle of the pictures. I exchanged it for the Gear 2 and couldn't be happier.
I was able to gain more apps in my Samsung store my changing the build prop on my phone. I currently have an ATT Note 3 (rooted via Towelroot) and I changed the build prop from this:
ro.product.model= SAMSUNG-SM-N900A
to this:
ro.product.model=SAMSUNG-SPH-L900
I did not change anything else, and I have approx 20 apps just in the Entertainment section alone. Multiwatch is there, along with a bunch more.
**Disclaimer, I am not responsible if you jack anything up messing with your build prop info**

Everyone knows I love my Note II, quad core with dedicated GPU on a 5.5 inch 720p screen. But when the galaxy gear smart watch came out it wasn't (and still isn't officially) compatible with anything but the Note III. I decided to see if I could get it to work.
After some digging I found the .apk for the galaxy gear watch manager for the note III and low and behold it installs just fine on my Note 2:

It's not totally 100% compatible, some things I still have to work on, but it does sync contacts, take photos, show the time etc.
If you have a Samsung galaxy device and wish to get the gear, feel free to try the APK I found:

Here's some video of me tooling around in minecraft PE:
I didn't keep minecraft on the watch but I wanted to see if the watch could handle it.
Thus far I've installed a small calculator, and an uninstalling application to remove things I don't want to keep. I've also tried other launchers like Nova. Nova worked fine except you can't load widgets and there is no clock on the top right so the device is useless as a watch. I'll be sticking with the standard touchwiz launcher as it has a working app drawer.
I've taken the standard launcher and taken all the home screens out except for time, app drawer, and notifications so it's much more stream lined and I can get to all my apps with just one swipe. The question is, what apps do you think would be good additions to my wrist aside from calc, schedule, phone, and time? .apk links would be great too.
You can't use any apps the require a data connection as the device doesn't have wifi. I tried using pdanet tablet edition & foxfi between this and my phone via Bluetooth but it force closes unfortunately.
Can you get notifications, and which?
Still trying to figre that out. When I go into the gear manager on the phone and click "samsung apps" the manager freezes and I have to force close it.
What I can do right now is make calls, take photos / video, see my call log, tell the time. I can also see upcomming events.
I need to find a copy of the note III's s-voice to be more compatible. Anyone have an .apk? I'm not sure if it's the exact same as the s4's

I've done a lot of reading on the gear. It's not worth it at the moment, especially since the CEO himself said the gear is lacking a little "something extra." Also, due to this, they have already started working on the gear 2. Mainly, Samsung knows they screwed up big time and Apple and Google will most likely produce something better. Your meta watch and my pebble are still better at the moment. The problem is battery life is terrible. All notifications from apps other than stock email and messaging show nothing but a notification icon with a number. You have to open up even gmail on your phone because it will not display on the gear. The metawatch and pebble showed all this from day 1 and even improved with each update. Every big tech review site has given the same statement. It looks great but fails everywhere else. Maybe if it was $100, it would be a decent accessory to have until something better comes out. However, $300 is a complete waste for a subpar overly hyped product. I wanted this device, but glad I read all the reviews. Samsung is retarded also for making it only compatible with the note 3 on release. A very stupid and limited form of marketing that will only hinder their progress. Anyway, if anyone bought it, good for you. Trust me it's better to wait as mentioned in many reviews of this device. Then again, it's smart marketing in one way because people will buy it for the cool factor, and then they will upgrade to the gear 2 because it's better. Same concept on cars. Mercedes has this trick with the E class. They've already got a 6-10 year outline of the horsepower and design of each future car. That's why it's the most changed and most bought Mercedes. Think about it before you fall for the gear.

Agreed...and there are many top tech websites and comments by people like us on xda that agree with you, lol.
T-Mobile already sells it at 25% discount, but I think you have to buy it with N3. Yeah, unfortunately Samsung rushed into this one. It has potential since its based on modified Android 4.2 OS (or whatever 4.x), which means it will get hacked and modified at some point. But the price point of $300 is too high to make it mainstream now. Remember what happened to original Sony SW? Nobody cared about it until they dropped the price to $99 and opened SDK. Boom! It became affordable and open for XDA community to jump in with new app development and support. But with Gear, no matter rootable or not, you still will be limited by poor battery life, proprietary charging cradle (imagine forgetting it to take with you before even a 2 day trip?), and bracelet which is not replaceable and kind of flimsy looking with that camera sticking out asking to be bumped.
About a month ago if someone would have asked me what smart watch to buy at the current moment, I would suggest Pebble only (because of it being mainstream with developers support). Today, this answer would be Sony SW2 because of all the improvements (watersplash resistant, easily accessible standard micro-usb, great touch display where watch face can stay on permanently and you still get a decent multi-day battery life). My personal fav right now is Omate. Don't care about stand-alone phone (will never use it), but the whole idea of portable android device fully waterproof with a camera, micro-sd, and 600 mAh battery, and already released SDK ahead of official availability (and XDA developers already working on it now) - that intrigues me a lot!
Yes the Omate is certainly the most interesting at the moment with full Android 4.2. My only gripe with it is how thick it is. I really don't see me wearing a watch that size at the moment. Maybe in a few years I'll be saying it's too small but right now the SW2 is the largest I'll go.
The SW2 is sleek and does what I need which is be a companion to my phone, allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket a bit more especially with where I'm living at the moment :/. If Google (or anyone else) doesn't beat it by December, the SW2 will be my next gift to myself.
I've enjoyed the watch so far, even it being in my possession for less than 12 hours I'm still having fun with it. I very rarely make expensive purchases on a whim and although I did read a ton of reviews I wanted this watch more for my own curiosity more than anything.
My friends helped kickstart the pebble and if I would have known about it I too would have been on that bandwagon. So far the picture quality has been great, I've yet to take any videos however I can tell you that you can transfer the files from the watch to the phone seamlesly. I belive it does it for you after awhile or you can push them. I took some shots of my parent's dog I was watching today and the photos looks pretty good, especially on this small screen.
I like the fact that I can use multi-touch things like pinch-zoom etc. The audio controls are nice and when 4.3 comes out for the note II there will be even more things I should be able to do with this device. Samsung did say that the marketplace for this device will be open for app devs to make things for it specifically, and it can have a dozen or so apps installed at once.
Great feedback from everyone. I agree that the Sony Smart Watch 2 seems to be the best new option currently. It delivers on battery life, is splash resistant, can open and read notifications, esp with the notification pull down, and has the ability to see multiple apps on each screen similar to android phones and the Omate interface. It's definitely an improvement for the current smartwatch genre. It's actually also thinner than the Gear despite being boxier. I do like the Omate and the Neptune Pine, but they seem way too bulky and geared towards being stand alone devices despite Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity for use with smartphones. I just hope Google does one better.
The gear is the worst deal lol. A waste of $300

I run with my pebble and sweat a lot. Pebble is totally waterproof even in the shower. That's really pathetic on Samsung's part. They clearly didn't do enough testing.
It never stops amazing me Phandroid reports the price of Galaxy Gear maybe going down and this is failure.
Prices of all devices drop after several months did the reporters at Phandroid forget this fact? It is one of the reasons being a early adopter is not always wise.
This is the first Smart Watch to have dedicated forum on this site. Is that a sign of failure?
I am sick of people saying how badly the watch is doing.

sometimes it does means failure. but we have to ask ourselves if Samsung plan was actually to make Gear a 'non failure' device or they just wanted to get it first on the market. Pebble or Sony Smartwatch 2 are far from what I would have call a "smart watch".
either way - launching gear was a failure. compatible with only Note 3 at the beginning, terrible battery life, no external notifications, lack of software etc. it was limited on purpose, but for no reason. gear is powerful enough to be working with all modern smartphones. so yes, i judge the device on the release day - why would i care what it will become in few weeks/months? stock Gear is **** and the only reason why i keep it is because i can use it the way i want it to - not some korean creeps designing my menu..

Still have not used or tried the Null Rom, it is my understanding all it does is replace the Touchwiz interface.
Gapps means nothing to me because my Note does not support bluetooth tethering.
.... but that is off my own Topic, still believe if the price drops it is mainly due to normal life cycle.
Have not bought a device yet that I could not get at least $100 cheaper in 3 months, the Gear is 3 months old.
it's completely normal for all electronic devices to go cheaper with time.
null does not replace touchwiz interface, it allows you to use any interface of your choice. you like nova launcher you can use it. you prefer google experience? the world is yours. it allows bluetooth tethering, two way sync, direct dial shortcut and way way more. if you haven't tried it yet then maybe it's just not for you (surprisingly there are people out there who are happy with stock thing ).
i use my gear - for other than notifications, time and calling/camera - for viewing agenda, to-do list, displaying some text on it, calculator and more.. and nothing of it could be achieved without null.

No kidding.
I paid $299 for mine the day they where released but I love the thing.
If you worried about things like TVs/cameras/stereo equipment etc. going down in price you ill never buy anything.
I don't know where all these rumors are coming from for a galaxy gear 2 already being released. That's just downright stupid... The note 3 and gear were just released a few months ago! The things still brand new and the N3 is still the best phone on the market right now.
Releases are done typically once a year... hence iphones, Samsung galaxy devices etc... its not every 3 months...
You guys are basically saying they would be making three different models per year if they are releasing the GG2 this fast... then another 4 months the Gear 3? Waayyy to fast.

i understand your logic and thoughts on this however wearables are very new and could be updated at first much faster to address things they just didnt know until they released what they thought was the right mixture of style, performance, apps, etc, etc...
i consider myself generally an early adopter and look at this:

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
although i am in the early adopter category most of the time i sometimes want to read and see what happens with something before i jump (usually depends on cost) and Gear was just really about is it really useful.
here is my opinion:
1. i saw some usefulness in it but not day 1
2. i finally had to know what it is all about myself and so i bought one actually expecting to return it since i have 30 days as a BB platinum 30 day no restocking fee customer
3. after 3 days and finding this section of XDA i knew i was keeping it
4. i can see where improvements could be made
5. i do not in any way regret my purchase even at $299/US
6. i personally would LOVE a new edition
7. the new edition would have to really prove itself as having enough to get me to upgrade
8. even if the next edition doesnt motivate me i will probably upgrade because thats just what i do
dont let new models even if its 4 months later upset you and instead appreciate what you have and decide if the newer model comes out in a date faster then what you feel is fair.
as long as Samsung continues to support this model for a decent amount of time then what difference does it make that a different model is released and if it works for you as it is then you can continue to enjoy it

The galaxy gear was released Sept 4th. Thats almost 6 months ago!! Samsung releases 2 flagship phones a year. Thats once every 6 months. The S4 came out in march. 6 months later the note 3 in late Sept. The S5 is to be unveiled Feb 24th and probably released early March. Why wouldn't Samsung release the Galaxy Gear 2 then? I bet you they do!!!!!!!! Samsung is hurting right now for pieces of the cellphone market. They've got to pull out all their tricks.

I think Samsung will continue to support the GG when GG2 is released be silly for them not to.
What will intrest me is if the GG2 Firmware & software can be ported over to the GG.
google glass is not a widely available consumer product yet, it's meant for developers (and celebrities , unlike gear which you can get in almost any electronic/phone store.

So I got my gear 2 neo from unlocked-mobiles.com . I tried to connect with my note 3 but had major probs. So through xda i updated my gear manager to the latest version then it finally synched.
However the gear manager crashes with a plugin error when I try to go into the notifications manager ( to select other apps for notification). So at the moment just got default apps working for notifications - no whatsapp, bbm, telegram .. I had the original gear and the null rom on it which made it better. I'm hoping some devs can do the same with this tizen version !
Ive read there is a firmware update for the gear2 but not sure if compatible with neo so ill wait for now.
Hopefully Sammy will sort these issues out ...

Just got mine too. I have a galaxy mega and it wouldn't pair until I loaded the s5 version of galaxy manager on xda. Same fix used for the none connectivity issue with note 3. Now it works. Really think I will like this much better than the pebble I had. I hear they are suppose to release an update to gear manager that will fix this issue on the official release date (april 11)

The only place I can find them so far (USA) is AT&T. Amazon stopped their pre-orders and Newegg and Samsung show release dates of 4/28. Anywhere else you know of to get one? For US pricing, it looks like a $100 difference for the Neo and the standard Gear 2...

I can't compare it to the previous one, but it is loud enough to have a normal phone conversation. You can't do any typing on it so no email or notification replies. I've had my gear 2 neo for 3 days now, the battery easily lasts 3 days now with the extra initial use. Overall I'm happy, it's just kind of weird to use a device that wasn't released officially and all the issues that caused. Hopefully the store will be flooding now.
I am really liking my Gear 2 Neo. Wish I could program seperate rooms for the watch on app, transfer files like pics/music over bluetooth, and have a file explorer. Besides that, I'm very happy with it. Can't wait for a developer to get to work on tizen on this watch. It could be. .... legen....(wait for it) ....dary!

You can download the Gear Manager that was released yesterday ( 2.0.14040401 )I couldn't find it in samsung apps but got it from Bendo's link. I was using the note3 fix (s5 ported) on my Mega then switched to the one released yesterday. Also did a firmware update on the watch. It provides a couple of new features and the latest gear manger connected with no problem. Here is the link provided by Bendo for the latest manager 2.0.14040401

Install the tizen sdk from here: http://developer.samsung.com/samsung-gear
I think you don't really need the samsung mobile sdk for this. In the tizen sdk install dir there's a samples folder with sample project "AnalogWatch". Import it in the sdk by selecting the AnalogWatch folder as root. It's all javascript/html5 so pretty straightforward; I put a 320x320 image in the css folder of the project, then added a background reference in the style.css:
.canvas {
position: absolute;
background: #000;
background-image:url('rammstein.jpg');
width: 320px;
height: 320px
}
The color of the needle is in js/main.js:
function renderNeedle(angle, radius) {
'use strict';
context.save();
context.rotate(angle);
context.beginPath();
context.lineWidth = 4;
context.strokeStyle = 'ff0000';
Save the project. On your gear go to preferences, scroll down to gear info and enable the usb debugger. Hook the gear up to your pc, in the Tizen IDE it should show up in the connection manager. Use the green "play" icon at the top menu to run your project, it should run straight on the watch and add the clock to the preferences also.
If the Tizen update were to come out today for the Gear 1, would you stay or switch the Tizen.
Keep in mind the Trade-offs
Android:
Pros:
Android Ecosystem (100s thousand apps)
Custom ROM
Highly Moddable
Cons:
3 day instead of 4 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
(currently) no Gear Specific Android SDK
few Gear Specific apps
Tizen
Pros:
4 day instead of 3 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
SDK Available
Possibility of more future Tizen specific apps
sports functions like hiking, cycling, etc
future upgrade path
Cons:
Few Developers with experience in Tizen
Questionable interest in Tizen ecosystem -- with announcement of Google Wear
No mods
No roms
No Android app access
I would switch, as most of the Android apps are not meant for Gear 1, so this Pro is not really valid. I believe many more Gear 2 apps will come in Tizen, and the underlying OS does not matter to me.
That pro depends on your needs.
With android you can do:
Internet tethering
File manager
Google maps
Google now
Tasker
Audio recorder
Full Facebook
Google Voice dictation
Really depends on your expectations.
The more you expect to do, the more of a plus it is.
But if you just want a stock experience then it's less of a plus.
But I really wonder if Tizen will take off with the developers knowing a universal platform, the Google Wear is right around the corner.

Only partially. I could not get the Google apps to go online, only the Google Search. Other apps requiring direct net connection did not work for me either. I have been back on Stock for some time now due to this limitation from AT&T.
Here, you need to install the Xposed Hack Connectivity service APK needed to spoof the network connectivity. This makes apps think there is a standard wifi network connection even when there is not.
Lots of people forget or miss this step and have the exact same problem you have.
Probably just get the file off here, no need to read the page contents, just download.

in some cases not even the xposed hack will work as i found out when using easy tether - it turns out google services need https connectivity so the free version of easy tether + xposed did not solve the problem. By upgrading to the pro version of easy tether i was able to start using these services. By the way love how google translate works - very convenient in a watch

App with big buttons?
App that requires the phone as a "provider" of data?
App that the manufacturer deems as "official"?
I think I would switch to tizen only if the battery life is really really better than with the current rom...
If it was 1 week that would be awesome. Lol
Well it kind of would be longer since you won't be using it as much due to lack of tizen apps, so you'd have a long stand by time. But actual usage time would be the only slightly longer.

Sounds like a lot of people are wanting to switch back to Android.
I think switching to Tizen now is too much of a risk to take especially with Android Wear right around the corner. Why lose the ability to control your device and be at the mercy of Samsung by switching to Tizen and be stuck with it forever?
The only thing I like about tizen was the standalone music player. Is there a way to do that with null rom?

I have been doing a lot of reading on the Gear and the pros & cons of Android vs Tizen...and whether root is really needed to enjoy the Gear. So I am asking all of you...what do you prefer & why? I know Tizen wins with battery life & Android wins with sideloading full Android apps...
What did all of you choose to do?

I can tell you about my feelings on Tizen. The ability to root the watch and sideload apps was a nice novelty for me, but when I upgraded to Tizen, I felt like I had a new watch. It flows much better, the interface prettier, and the battery life is much improved. Tizen is dead in the water due to Android Wear and Samsung's insistence on keeping it a closed platform, but it gives new life to the Gear 1.

Thanks for your view on Tizen. To be honest I had difficulties understanding why someone would want to look at a small screen with regular android apps when you have a 5.7 inch phone in your pocket. BUT variety is also the spice of life and the ability to have all these apps on your watch IS a nice novelty. For me I think besides the stock apps I would need Evernote & My Fitness Pal on the watch. Anything else would be just for bragging to my iPhone friends what I can do with my new toy!!! LOL

mikespe,
Thanks for this thread. I was wondering the same thing myself...whether to root my Android based Gear One or upgrade to the new OS. Still don't know for sure which I will stick with. Just rooted mine and looking to see if I can find any ROM's to install and play with. Then I will make my decision on whether to move up to Tizen. Would appreciate any other thoughts from folks on the Tizen OS.
Battery life seems better on tizen
Sent from my LG-D800 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
for me, battery life on tizen/multi-watch/custom watch face lasts about 3 days whereas android/watch styler/custom watch face would last about 1 day.
the other thing is that the tizen'ed gear can receive notifications from the watch when the screen is on. On android notifications doesn't come thru until the screen turns off. So when using Waze or other full-screen apps, I can easily glance to see what notifications i just received.
I don't miss android at all since upgrading to tizen about 3 weeks ago
edit: whats the benefit of rooting tizen? besides silencing the camera and i think increasing video length...

I changed to Tizen within the first week of its release and must admit initially i found it much better in terms of battery life , sleep monitor etc
i also liked the fact that we have an SDK and i created a couple of watchfaces that suited me
BUT the haphazard way that Samsung make the Apps available is awful and i found i could have every type of app i want using Null
I have now gone back to Android as the biggest thing for me is Notifications , under Tizen the Notification system is worse than the original gear as Samsung have changed the Message Body font to a dull grey which is difficult enough to read anyway but in sunlight its virtually impossible. That coupled with the fact that not enough of the notification is displayed makes this a waste of time for me, Good to have the better battery life but if i have to open every message on the watch that soon dissapears.
So now i'm back to Null and i use SWAPPLink and the Notifications are brilliant, loads of the message info is displayed and i feel that its actually useful again.
what i have now done is made a watch face with the info that i want using UCCW and i find it much better now
Yes the battery is nowhere near as good but for me thats a small price to pay for a watch i am enjoying for a change

A quick update so far I have not used the watch for anything other than receiving notifications and after 7 hrs of use the battery is at 86% and that's with the display on full brightness for a while whilst I was out
Another update for you 14 hrs 48 mins and 41% left and I've been playing music on it through bluetooth so that's pretty good . I can live with that
