Google Map random rerouting - Moto X Q&A

Has anyone had Google maps reroute them mid-route without telling them?
I will try to explain what I mean as clear as possible. Sorry for the long post.
Last weekend I went on a trip from Illinois to Kentucky. I have made this trip a few times so I have somewhat of an idea where I'm going but I like to use google maps to remind me where the exits are etc...the exit I wanted, and what maps has always used to direct me to was the Leestown exit (the place I was going was just off of Leestown Rd...Anyway, it wanted me to get off at an exit like 5 miles before there, so I drove on by since I was pretty sure that wasnt the correct exit...then it wanted me to get off at the next exit...I decided to listen to maps this time and took the exit...It ended up taking me way out in the country with basicly 1 lane roads until it finally took me back to Leestown road...Where I should have been in the first place. There was some construction, but no stoppage on the road at all.
Then next time was when I was leaving. I decided I wanted to go from Lexington KY, and go up to Cincinnati, OH, then Indianapolis, then Champaign, Il to get home. That was one of the 3 routes it offered me when I put in my home address to get home. The "faster route" was through Louisville, KY vs Cincinnati, but Louisville had many areas that were under construction and they tend to have worse traffic.
No matter how many times I would tell it to take the route through Cincinnati, it would always default back to Louisville. I finally just told it to take me to Cincinnati vs home...Once I was on my way to Cincinnati, I told it to route me home via Indianapolis, then Champaign IL. using the interstate...That was the route it suggested. It took me to Indianapolis, but then decided to take me off the highway and onto 2 lane highways the rest of the way.
I could not get it to stick to the original route no matter what I tried. Avoidances were all turned off. It was incredibly annoying and ended up wasting a lot of extra time.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I am on Maps V 8.0.0
Green is what I wanted, Red is what Maps kept re-routing to, and blue is what path it ended up taking me.

I have seen some random things but not quite that bad. When I drove a lot for work a TomTom was more reliable than any phone navigation app.

My biggest gripe is that as I'm driving it DOESN'T update the route enough. I see pop-up boxes that say "6 MIN FASTER" if I take a different exit/etc. Uh, why isn't the program telling me to take that route? I find myself constantly looking down at the screen during my morning commute to get there faster. Previously, it would just randomly tell me where to go and re-route -- but with much less information. You're almost there Google... almost!

I had another instance of it happening again on Monday when I drove to St. Louis for work...I was driving from Decatur, Il; So I take I72 west to Springfield, then take I55 South toward STL, then I270 into STL (my destination was right next to the airport)...I was about 9 miles from the 270 exit when it suddenly told me to stay on I55 for another 19 miles which took me right into the heart of STL...which is way south of the airport.
UPDATED OP WITH MAP
Heres a pic of what it did...disregard my poor drawing skills.

I'm definitely having the same problem with Google Maps v 8.1.0. It rerouted on a trip from Vermont to Indiana last week and screwed me up since I wasn't watching for it. Today, on the return trip it has already rerouted to a slower route 3 times on my Note 2. Perhaps Google hired some former Apple Maps programmers on the cheap? It makes the app unreliable and sort of useless.

Kinda glad I'm not the only one. At first I thought it was trying to re-route for traffic or construction, but neither route to STL had any major construction or traffic. It actually took me back via 270...Very fustrating

Same here as well.
Randomly told me to turn round and take a different motorway which would take an hour longer. Also re routed me off the main road to get to my destination via some back roads which would take 40 mins longer :silly:

For me, the strange routing started happening more with this latest update that included the little "5 MIN FASTER" stuff. Is that the case with y'all?

Yep

I drove up and down the east coast the past couple weeks and had GM do this fairly persistently. Luckily I knew where I was going so I called BS on it when it rerouted me a way I knew to be longer. It seems like it isn't aware of all the connections between streets and routes around them. Ironically for the routes that it did route fine, the ETA values were spot on, even accounting for traffic conditions (for 10+ hour drives).

Yes! Same here. You're supposed to be able to deny Google Maps/Navigatoin from rerouting you if you don't want it to.
I don't know why the Moto X doesn't allow this option. It automatically reroutes you based on traffic and it's annoying because sometimes you want to stay on the main road or highway regardless.
Has anyone figured this out yet?

Also, this.

My solution works great http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/google-maps-version-6-14-3-runs-moto-x-t2785516

AT&T Tilt - TomTom6 cost question

I recently received TomTom6 and have used it a few times to make sure it's what I want. It works great btw.
But my question is how does AT&T calculate the service cost? Is it Media Net? Don't want to think it's free and find a $100.00 bill. Also looking to get unlimited whatever it runs on, as I plan to do alot of traveling.
I already have a map of my hometown, and just us TomTom to navigate through the city, nothing else.
Thanks!!!
There is no additional cost to use TomTom. It will only use your data connection if you have A-GPS or TomTom Plus Services enabled.

TomTom 7 works like absolute garbage for me on every ROM I've tried. I downloaded their free map, but within 5 seconds of starting navigation, the map stops drawing, and TomTom goes into an infinite recalculating cycle.
Of course TomTom 6 wasn't much of an option either since their POI's are all out of whack. Veteran's Stadium in Philadelphia was demolished in 2004, so It makes sense that the latest maps from 2007 would not have this stadium. But Citizen's Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field, both built in 2004 to replace Veteran's stadium, are not listed either!
I switched to iNav since I can also run it on my laptop.
Good experience here
I recently enjoyed 3 weeks in the Los Angeles area, which is very far from my home, and it's safe to say that I and my family relied heavily on my TYTN-II with tomtom6 and the North American map I bought for it. I don't know how we would have navigated without it.
It works like a charm - only one time during the 3 weeks did I need to reset the TYTN-II to get a GPS fix.
The maps are on sale from www.tomtom.com occasionally. I bought mine for like $80.
Well I didn't go TT7 because I'm new to using GPS entirely. And I only found [wasn't really looking for] the cab to TT6.
It came with a free city map, and to me TT6 is great! [On point, gives lat & longitude points and good mph reading].
I'll look into both TT7 & iNav.
Thanks guys!

I keep hearing this from a lot of people.
What ROM are you currently running? Ever since I left Death v4.1, I've tried HyperDragon IIIi and IIIr, ROMeOS 3.x and 4.x, Garmin.DK 1 and 2, and now IBI private beta. I have have various issues with GPS on all of them. In order to get iNav to refresh the screen at full speed, I have to use GPSGate and redirect my hardware GPS to a faux COM port.

Backpacking with the HTC Touch Diamond

Hey all.
When I go backpacking, I will be taking my HTC Touch Diamond with me. I will primarily use this for playing mp3s, and running the odd movie when i am bored.
Any ideas of a good application that will effectively use the GPS? it would be handy to be able to pick out my co-ordinates, as this will keep my mum happy when she wants to know where I am! Also, it could come in handy for finding places that I want to get to (i got lost plenty of times last time!).
Also, what sort of battery would you recommend me getting, I do not want the touch diamond to be any bigger (or much) or much heavier, if possible.
Also, do you have any suggestion of apps or uses for the diamond that will be helpful on my journey?
Also how long do you think playing mp3s will last on the diamond, or should i be looking at a real mp3 player? I will mostly be using this phone in aeroplane mode.
Cheers
one of the best programs i can recommend you is the OS map viewer. Downloadhere. This is the PC application, which has a option in it to install to a Pocket PC device (Diamond).
UK note: This version is NOT compatible with GB Ordnance Survey maps. To get the correct OS edition, please use the Web / Check for Updates command in Memory-Map Navigator
You need to buy or search google for the maps to go with it.
Batts are gonna be your #1 problem.
I suggest you focus on any kind of battery extension.
Maybe a stroll down the Diamond accessory section will shed some light.
Greets.

i like the look of these.
I recommend you setup TrackMe, so your mom can take a look on a website where you currently are.
it's on xda-devs and free, works really great
For the power you need, you could take this in your backpack:
http://www.wehkamp.nl/w2/Winkelen/K...C=C09&SC=I0A&KAC=IA2&ArtikelNummer=741532#t10
It's in Dutch, but you get an idea, it carries 8000mAh so you could get a few days of GPS-sing without a powersupply

LOL, too funny Davey. I'm a Diamond owner too and you hit it pretty close to the mark. I personally wouldn't trust my Diamond out backpacking unless I had an alternative method to charge it every few hours. Even on custom roms and all that i get terrible battery life whenever I decide to use the thing.
I would suggest some type of charger to bring with you like a solar panel or something.
GPS and wifi can be damn useful when backpacking.
you now have a place to store pics, you can check your mail with wifi instead of visiting an internet cafe everyday, and with gps you can find your way in a new city. so just make sure you have all the maps on your diamond
Where are you going?
when backpacking i met a few guys who had backpacks with solar panels in them for ipods and phones.
i searched for those and its not cheap but very useful.
here's the one i saw http://www.voltaicsystems.com/

Not seen those before, nice. They're not cheap are they?
Or you could go with a big sticker saying 'mug me'.
I would go with the official extended battery plus at least 3 spares. The only problem is how to keep them cool, Li-ion batteries will permanently degrade when stored, fully charged, in hot conditions.
I bought a backpack last year with a solar panel in, if you go that route make sure you get one with a proper lithium battery pack, the one i had 4 cheap AA rechargable batteries and whatever you charge using them doesn't last very long, the lithium battery ones are a lot better, my orbit phone charge lasts around 50% less when recharging from AA's via the solar panel
i use findme along with the findme facebook app works just fine

Hey there.
Yeah its going to be really good, I have set up Skype on it as well, although it does lag quiet a bit sometimes unfortunately. I will be going to Malaysia > Cambodia > Laos > Thailand > Myanmar > Indonesia
I am interested in downloading (paying if i have to) maps onto my phone, so if ever needed, i can see where i am. If you can help me source software for this i could be grateful!
As for GPS tracking, I need something ideally that will work well while abroad. By this I mean that I can not afford large data bills (priced at £7 per megabyte while roaming!). I was perhaps looking for something where i could press a button, it would get a fix on the satalite, and send my co-ordinates either via email or sms, most likely sms as i get 10 free a day while abroad. It does not need to be real time tracking, just once a day position update. This will be a massive bonus, as my mum will relax abit more knowing exactly where i am in the world, instead of a vague answer.
As for batteries, I think i dont want to take too much stuff of value, and obviously where i am going its going to be very humid, so i cant have loads of charged batteries. Perhaps I will opt for a usb solar charger, or equivelent.
Many thanks for your help
Gary.

That's no big deal. If some idiot wants to keep paying taxes on a new car every 6 months, that's more money for the local government than the price of the tags. Remember that the taxes on the whole vehicle are paid at the time of the vehicle's actual sale, which means right before the vehicle is driven off the lot.
Remember that California has a sales tax rate of 7.75%, so every 6 months, they get to charge $10230.00 in sales tax. When the vehicle gets flipped 6 months later, they get to nail it for sales tax a second time.
Basically, this idiot was paying more than $20000 per year just to drive without plates. The average price of a new car in the US is under $30000, also known as 18 months of driving without plates for stupidface.
Sorry, but this MORON didn't find any loophole. He found a hole to shove money into by the wheelbarrow.

It works great as long as you ignore that some of the H roads go vertical and some of the V go horizontal.
The main utilities are buried in the banks either side of the roads so traffic doesn't have to be delayed by roadworks.
The grid wasn't the first design though. Originally the plan was a 4 leaf clover layout, with a monorail around the border. How cool would that have been?
No home was to be more than a 5 minute walk from a bus stop, and 15 minutes from a monorail stop.
Way too expensive though so they dropped it.
They did, back in the 50s/60s foresee a time when homes would have more than one car which is pretty foward thinking for the time.
Although they forgot about the need for a hospital or firestation!
New home owners were given a voucher to buy and plant a tree, resulting in hundreds of trees needing to be ripped up 20-30 years later due to growing too close to roads/buildings etc.
"Note for Americans and other aliens: Milton Keynes is a new city approximately halfway between London and Birmingham. It was built to be modern, efficient, healthy, and, all in all, a pleasant place to live. Many Britons find this amusing." -Good Omens

Should there be a maximum age for driving?

Maybe require them to take an annual driver-certification test of some kind after a certain age?
See http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lan...hits-9-children-while-backing-up-his-car.html
Yes, definitely. Here (in norway) people that are 70+ years old must have a "medical certificate" from their doctor, and they have to see their doctor once a year. If their doctor says that they're not fit to drive then that'll be it. Doesn't eliminate the dangers, but it's a start.
Look up driving and accident statistics anywhere in the state of Florida and you'll have a definitive answer. There is something truly frightening about seeing a 90 year old person behind the wheel of a Suburban or Excursion. Especially when they are so hunched over from arthritis that their only line of sight is looking under the steering wheel and over the dash. We called them Q-Tip drivers, since the only thing you could see was a puff of white hair. If you've seen Ferris Bueller you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I think drivers should have to retake the entire driving test every time or two they renew their license. That way it doesn't discriminate any group of people, and will eliminate everyone who doesn't know how to drive, not just the older people.

How about a mandatory retake of drivers ed courses for people who get in more than two accidents in five years?
It sounds good in principle, but I have literally seen DMV employees guiding elderly people through the vision test. I think people here regard driving as a right, not as a privilege and responsibility.

+1. Then, there are the cases of old people driving their cars through buildings (they mistake the accelerator for the brake, in a parking lot, when they start their car). I guess when people get old, everything looks the same.

Yes I live in Florida as well. I lost my driver side mirror because some old ass guy decided he didn't like the lane he was in. To bad I was right next to him and he just starts moving over. Luckily I quick enough to act and he only took out my mirror. I see waaay to many old fools that should not be driving.

This is what I thought of when I saw this thread.
I dont think there should be no questions asked cut off age, not everybody ages equally. But for sure tests should be administered after a certain age, if you cant pass the test you shouldn't drive..
I think having to get a doctor's release to drive after a certain age makes the most sense. It's not about age, really, but the mental and physical competency that degrades with age.
Maybe not a max age but they def need to get better at screening with age. I mean, WTF, they are so mean there to everyone at the DMV so why are they being " nice" and letting our old folks get renewed when they shouldn't lol

Definitely should be or least re-test after a certain age
Every summer, Southern California sees a temporary influx of old retirees from Arizona. They drive at very slow speeds on the fast lane of our freeways. We just love them for that :^)

Oh god yes. Please. Senior drives are as dangerous as, if not more so than, junior drivers.
Going 50 and overtaking!!! on the bloody Autobahn, are you f*cking kidding me... Or just randomly slamming on the breaks in the middle of a corner. Or crossing the intersection without even so much as noticing all the oncoming traffic!
67. (pension-age) After that, every 5 years a re-exam. If you fail, get used to taking a cab.
I think so...
Seen this discussion on a lot of car forums.
I'm a bit neutral as far as opinion.
Some drivers are inherently incapable all thru their driving years then some are careful responsible till the end.
Now that I'm closing in on 60 I'm way more intolerant of others.
In the past I was a very angry aggressive driver...I never got anywhere faster than anybody else.
Haven't really slowed down, I just do my best to be safe and sane with constant self checks when driving.

This was the only "store unit" they received. I was rather shocked to find that their unit did not have:
photo-sphere
2 finger toggle pull down menu
Lockscreen widgets w/ camera app
I assumed it was simply not shipped with the newest firmware. I'm sure the release models will be fine.
When I mentioned "i'm getting this tomorrow", he said they are not getting them in for at least another week or two. :crying:
I helped them swap out the in-store large format advertisements that covered the walls with ones that all advertised the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2.
A short while later I met the store manager and we began our interview.:good:
All went well, and I snuck in a question about the Nexus4 being delayed.
She explained to me that Samsung and Tmobile made an agreement for Samsung to "buy time" during their upcoming promotion.
This weekend the Galaxy Phones will have a huge sale (in-store only) and during this time the Nexus4 will not be released.
Now those large format advertisements for the S3 and Note II make sense.
She (the manager) said the nexus4 will be available for sale around Nov 22 just in time for thanksgiving/black friday shopping
So now I must wait
***I only had a few seconds to play with it, but just so you all know, there isnt any real bloatware. Only 1.5 pages of apps.
***Feels great in your hands! Doesn't feel as bulky as the GS3 and feels a tad heavier
***I know many reviews said that you have to look hard to see the "crystal reflective process" on the back but in the store it was obviously noticeable. Which I like better anyway!
That is odd. I just got off the phone with customer care and they tole me it should be available everywhere tomorrow (the 14th). But I also called my local store and was told the only store to get it in would be one about an hour away from me. Different info with anybody we speak with.
Perhaps it's a regional thing. I know that all the stores near me in NY got the GS3 during the first wave release date. Maybe this is a similar occurrence.
Where in New York is this because the two T Mobile stores I talked to said they'd have the Nexus tomorrow.
Staten island, ny
They will be in select stores and very limited quantity but 100% will be available Nov 14.
I wish there was a public list of stores that will have them. I'd make the trip
Think he can get me an interview too? Lol no joke

I'd be surprised if the T Mobile in the SI Mall doesn't have it tomorrow (unless thats where you went to). The T Mobile stores I checked were in Downtown Brooklyn (Court St) and in Upper West Side in Manhattan (96 St).
Serious_Beans, sorry, but I only got the interview since they needed to fill one spot and I am being recommended by 3 employees. We all worked together at circuit city back in the day
And ImmenseGT, it is the mall one. So i am rather shocked too
If I have the time tomorrow, I am going to hit up all these T-Mo Stores in NJ since they are relatively close to where I will be running errands:
1396 Centennial Avenue
Piscataway Township, NJ 08854
100 Edison Glen Terrace #2540
Edison, NJ 08837
32 Parsonage Road
Edison, NJ 08837
250 Woodbridge Center Drive
Woodbridge Township, NJ 07095

Amazing! But I think if they were delaying the sale they would have said so in a ad or on facebook/twitter. Also tmonews would have found out and said so as well. I wonder how tmobile will set the full price on this one!! lol
It's up for order on the T-Mobile site....
it is different in every location..my friend works for tmobile and he said they will be getting it at 12pm east...in florida
None of my local stores had it. I called T-Mobile and I ordered it with next day shipping... will be here tomorrow $259... canceled my play store order
None of the NJ stores that I called had them. Only the New Brunswick store had but were sold out. All 3 Staten island store arn't getting it till the 22nd like i stated.
I just placed an order online at T-mobile and was alerted with the message that said the phone "was not available for immediate shipping" and expected delivery is targeted for Nov 22nd (same date that most stores will get it)
