Is XT1053 a developer version? - Moto X Q&A

I searched the forum but still can't figure it out. Could someone please give me a straight answer and thanks.

I assume so, that's what I got. GSM Developer Edition.

Not necessarily. I have a 1053 and it's NOT a developer device. I think all t mobile variants are 1053.

Actually, the T-Mobile variant IS considered the GSM developer edition. It is SIM-Unlocked, and Bootloader-Unlockable
There are 2 developer editions:
GSM: T-mobile Variant XT1053
CDMA: Verizon Developer edition XT1060 (interestingly, the non-Dev edition is also XT1060)
See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X

Only difference between T-Mobile and Developer edition is that the Dev edition can be bootloader unlocked and rooted without losing the warranty. Hardware-wise it's the same.

@x2h
As stated (although I don't trust the Wikipedia link as they get the supported frequencies wrong... and link to the wrong FCC docs for the wrong carriers as their references)..
The XT1053 describes two models... which are the same internally... (At least in the USA, I'm not sure about the rest of the world!)
GSM Developer Edition and the "GSM Unlocked (with T-Mobile SIM)"
The differences...
Developer Edition comes only as 32gig, black face, woven white back and silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and says Developer Edition on the back. Moto's web site gives out the bootloader unlock code, and it does NOT void the warranty.
The "GSM Unlocked" (as described on Moto Maker web site) can be fully customized via Moto Maker as 16 or 32gig and all the front, back and accent colors that are offered. While Moto's web site gives out the bootloader unlock code, requesting the code *DOES* void the warranty.
The bands, features, functions, installed software, modems, ROMs, are exactly the same on both varients of the XT1053. When requesting the Dev Edition Rom from Motorola, the file name starts with TMO_RETAIL_XT1053....

Technically that is not correct.
The T-Mobile variant is actually the "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile SIM)" as described on the Moto Maker Website. Yes, it too is an XT053, and the internal hardware/specs are the same, but unlike the Dev Edition, you can customize its front/back/accent colors, get it as 16/32gb, and requesting the unlock code for the bootloader voids the warranty.
(Dev Edition XT1053 is not customize-able, comes only as 32gig, and requesting the unlock code for the bootloader *does not" void the warranty)
And the Dev Edition says "Developer Edition" on its back, where as the Non-Dev Editions do not.

Correct.
Just as with the XT1053 Dev vs Non-Dev, the Dev and Non-Dev XT1060 models are the same internal hardware, use the same roms, radios, etc. However, requesting the Dev Ed XT1060 rom from Moto, the file name does not have VZW or Retail in it.
The differences being...
Non-Dev Edition, you can customize its front/back/accent colors, get it as 16/32gb, and Moto does NOT supply the bootloader unlock code.
Dev Edition for Verizon XT1060 is not customize-able (same black face, woven white back, silver accents), comes only as 32gig, and Moto DOES give out the bootloader unlock code for free on their web site, and requesting the unlock code for the bootloader *does not" void the warranty. Thanks for all the quick answers. It is clear to me now.

Hey, I'm in the same boat. I would like to buy a used T-Mobile variant and am struggling to tell them apart. So does this thread seem to imply that if it says "Developer Edition" on the back, then it's definitely not the T-Mobile variant? That is, if it doesn't say that on the back, and if the model number is XT1053, then it must be the T-Mobile variant? Also, if the phone is XT1053 and 16GB, then it must be the T-Mobile variant?

GSM Developer Edition is an XT1053 that comes with 32 gig storage, black face, chrome trim, and white woven back that says Developer edition.
"GSM Unlocked (with T-Mobile SIM)" is an XT1053 that can come with EITHER 16gig or 32gig storage, black or white front, and various options for back and trim.
As for bands/frequencies, software, both of these XT1053 are the same. The only differences are the storage options and color options.
Keep in mind, both the GSM Dev Edition (XT1053) and the Dev Edition for Verizon (XT1060) "look" the same (black face with white woven back that says Dev Edition on it, silver trim). The XT1060 has CDMA/EVDO/LTE support for Verizon, so its missing a few of the bands T-Mobile and ATT would use.

DEV Editions have unlockable bootloaders without voiding the warranty. An unlockable bootloader allows you to flash a recovery not signed by Motorola (like TWRP or CWM) which will allow you to flash root and other .zips.
Non-dev editions on AT&T do not have the ability to unlock the bootloader.

No, you'll be able to unlock the bootloader, root and install any of the methods that give the hotspot feature.

I'm going to copy/paste what I typed here ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52359376&postcount=13 as it definitely answers your question.
KidJoe said:
im going to repeat what has been said by me and others in the countless threads asking this same question....
The two developer edition moto X's come in black face, woven white back, with silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and say Developer Edition on back. They only come as 32 gig. When it comes to unlocking the bootloader, you can get the code from moto for free, and it does not void your warranty. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install 3rd party recovery, root, or install 3rd party roms (by 3rd party, I mean non-moto)
The retail x comes as black face, woven black back, and silver accents, or white face, woven white back, and silver accents. Moto Maker can be customized. These come as 32 or 16 gig.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and MotoMaker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
When it comes to hardware, the GSM Developer Edition (XT1053) is the same as the T-Mobile or Carrier Unlocked/Unbranded (XT1053) and uses the same ROMs. The big difference is getting the unlock code from Moto for the non-dev edition voids the warranty. When it comes to the (CDMA) Developer Edition X for Verizon, they too are identical hardware, but as said, you can't get the unlock code from Moto unless you have the Dev Ed. (Note: for a brief period, there was a Chinses site selling the codes, but it was shut down and is not presently available. No one knows for sure if it ever will be again)
If they are the exact same price, get the dev edition so you can unlock the bootloader without voiding the warranty.
If you have ATT, know that their X is the XT1058, you can not get its bootloader unlock code from Moto. More importantly, by specs it supports 2 additional LTE bands (originally said to only be used outside the USA, but lately there has been talk that ATT is using one of them in the USA now), but does not support HSPA on AWS (used by t-mobile for non-LTE 4g, but t-mobile has been reframing their 1900 from 2g to HSPA in some areas). So if you have AT&T but got the gsm dev, you'd be at risk if ATT starts fully using one or both of those "other" LTE bands in the USA in the future.
As for why unlock the bootloader, what would the average Joe gain by it? See -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html

As for "hot spot"... There is hotspot software in the X ROM. Since the gsm Dev uses the T-Mobile rom, it might work as is on ATT without modifications. You'll have to look that up. But there are other options to remove any "entitlement" checks (there are threads about it) or you can use WiFi tether when the Dev Edition is rooted.
I like developer. I think developer option has better opportunity than others.

[Q] Can I change my phone firmware from XT1060 to others?

I just got my phone from a local phone store, I checked that my phone is XT1060 and it's a verizon developer version, but I went to motorola's website and prepared to unlock the phone, the website said that my phone can't be unlocked, and I found that there's no any verizon logo and logo of "Developer's version" It's clean on the back of my phone except the Moto's logo, I am wondered that if my phone was a GSM version but somebody flashed the phone to the XT1060's developers' version rom, can it happened?
Thank you for your help!!!!!
P.S. Can I root my moto x in this status?
1. How did you verify the model number was XT1060? Exactly where did you look?
2. What gave you the idea it was a Developer Edition?
3. Can you root? If you can't unlock the bootloader, and if you have android 4.4.2 on your phone, then no. If you have 4.4 or 4.2.2, then find the SlapMyMoto thread.
4. VZW ROM on GSM phone? Possible, but no reason to. the GSM XT1053 ROM is "bloat free" so it would be a better option if its a GSM phone. At the same respect, cross flashing roms and radios between models (say XT1060 Verizon X rom onto a GSM XT1053 Dev/T-Mobile phone, or flashing the GSM XT053 T-Mo Rom on a GSM XT1058 ATT phone, is a little risky.). In some cases you can't cross flash unless the bootloader is unlocked.
The Developer Edition phones (GSM or the Dev Edition for Verizon) are all black front, woven white back, silver accents (buttons/camera ring), and 32 gig. They say Developer Edition on the back. (see the pix in those links)
The Verizon models, developer edition included, have the Verizon logo on the back. Then again, I'm not sure about the Moto Maker X if they take the time to but the carrier logo on the back.
The only place I've ever seen the model number on the phone, is on the back, near the bottom edge. Depending on the color of the writing and the back's color, it can be hard to see/read. On my VZW Dev X, its gray print on the woven white back which makes it extremely difficult. My Sister-in-law's Moto Maker with black back is hard to read too. You might have to angle it, "bounce light off it", etc. to read it.
On the phone... bring up the app drawer... then go settings -> about. What is listed for Android Version, System Version, and Build Number?

First, thank you for your help, I looked into bootloader and enter barcode page and found that it is a XT1060, second, I googled it and people say it is Moto X Verizon Developers' version, thirdly, I am on 4.4.2. and I can't gain root or any bootloader unlock, so I am now doubting that it is a verizon Consumers' version moto X, but I can't see any logo on the lower back on my phone, and my phone is black in back and white in front, also it has silver buttons. I recently checked it and cannot find any logo on the bottom near edge.
Here's the system information:
System Version: 164.55.2.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US
Build Number: KXA20.16-1.25.2
Thank you for your help
As said above, dev edition is black front, white back. If that's not what you have, then it isn't a dev edition.
If it is....sometimes the Motorola bootloader unlock site is glitchy....just gotta keep trying it.

I had links to Moto's page offering both the GSM Developer and VZW Developer edition. There is a picture (which kj2112 has now pasted directly in this thread). You can't unlock the bootloader on the Non-Developer Edition Verizon X. At least not via the Moto web site. In other words, if it is a Moto X for Verizon that came from a Verizon Retail store, or Moto Maker, then you can't get the bootloader unlock code from Motorola.
And if your phone is an XT1060 (Verizon). If it has 4.4.2 on the phone (which your does), and you don't have the Developer Edition for Verizon (which it appears you don't) you can not root or disable write protection on it.
The only way to root/disable write protection on the Verizon X with 4.4.2 is to unlock the bootloader (either having a Developer Edition or by visiting that Chinese web site/middle man and buying a code). The exploits used to root and disable write protection were patched in 4.4.2. If you have a locked bootloader you are stuck.

Again, The Dev Edition comes only one way. So if your phone is BLACK on the back and white on the front, it is NOT the Developer Edition. I linked to the moto page so you could see the picture.
at the very bottom of the back, in TINY and Hard to See print, it lists the model.
The only other option is someone replaced the back on the phone, so no model info will show on it.

Moto will NOT unlock the X for Verizon or ATT unless its a developer edition.
Your best bet is to try the 3rd party option in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177 If you can't get a bootloader unlock code that way, there is no other option.

[Q] VZW Moto X Unlocked Bootloader?

I'm stuck on Verizon but I absolutely need a phone with an unlocked bootloader for what I'm trying to accomplish.
From what I can tell the Moto X seems like a good option. Unfortunately, what I've read seems to imply that the Verizon version's bootloader cannot be unlocked. Is that correct?
So other than getting the developer edition of the phone (which is obviously much more expensive), do the Verizon Moto Xs from the online motorola store have an unlocked bootloader or are they the same as one purchased from Verizon?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find a clear answer. Would really appreciate if someone could please clarify.
Thanks

WHen it comes to the Moto X for Verizon there are 3 ways to get it... Developer Edition (on Moto's Dev Edition web site), Moto Maker edition (Moto's web site), or Verizon store (aka Retail edition).
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon have their bootloaders LOCKED. Motorola does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code. The only way to unlock it, would be if the Chinese Middleman (see thread in general section) is still available and selling codes, but he hasn't been as reliable lately (some users have received wrong code, some have received message back saying no code available).
They use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The Moto Maker and Retail are basically the same, except available as 16 or 32 gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking is not possible via Motorola. The only possibility is IF the Chinese Middleman will sell the code.

Which Moto X variant should I get?

If I buy a Moto X XT1058, will that work on UK carriers? Do any variants have advantages over others?
I'd buy the model which has the most GSM bands matching those used by UK carriers.

XT1052 is the model you should get unless you don't care for British/EU LTE bands.

Depends on what bands your carrier uses.
The XT1058, XT1060, and most other X's (except the XT1056 for Sprint and Republic Wireless in the USA) support Quad Band GSM (for GSM/GPRS/EDGE). It supports standard frequencies for UMTS/HSPA.
The Xt1058 supports the most LTE bands, so chances are better for LTE outside the USA.
Take a look at Wikipedia for the X, its pretty accurate.
You may need to sim unlock the XT1058, but codes can be purchased on line for $10 to $30 USD. I know the ATT XT1058 is SIM locked, I'm not sure about the other varients (like the XT1058 from Rogers Canada, etc).
If you want to root, and you get an XT1058, just make sure its not an ATT XT1058. The ATT XT1058 can't have its bootloader unlocked, unless it still has 4.4.2 or lower on it, and you pay for Sunshine. Rogers and other XT1058 can get their bootloader unlock code for free from Moto's web site, and you can use the code no matter what ROM is on the phone (although it does void the warranty). Unlocking the bootloader is the only way to root Android 4.4.4, and possibly future versions. And its the easiest way to root Older Android versions on the X.

Thanks for the information. This is more of a general question, but if a phone is listed as "unlocked", does that suggest it isn't an ATT XT1058, and won't need a bootloader unlock code? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
"Unlocked" means that the phone works with SIMs from any mobile operator. So it's more like "operator unlocked".
Unlocker bootloader Moto Xs (and Gs) are called "Developer Edition".

Yeah, what @spkbri said...
There are TWO types of "Unlocked" and some people do confuse them.
SIM Unlocked (aka Carrier unlocked) which just allows you to use any other carrier's sim in the phone.
Bootloader Unlocked, which allows you to flash unsigned parts (like 3rd party recoveries, roms, etc).
So if you see a phone listed only as "Unlocked" it could mean either.
Motorola did sell a few "GSM Unlocked (ships with XXX SIM)" type models on Moto Maker website (mostly for T-Mobile and Net10 in the USA). These were the XT1053 variety, shipped SIM unlocked, and could have their boot loaders unlocked by requesting then using the bootloader unlock code. Per moto's wording on the web site, requesting the bootloader unlock code voids the warranty.

I will disagree with you here.
Yes, Moto did sell Developer Editions of the X for GSM and Verizon USA (CDMA). They were bootloader unlockable. You just request the code from Moto's web site. And unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
But when it comes to the "2013 X", for some carrier editions and Moto Maker editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers and many others), Motorola also freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web Site. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
The exceptions being ATT USA, Republic Wireless USA, and Verizon USA. For those, Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock codes (likely due to agreements with those carriers). That being said, when the China Middle Man was operating, you had a chance to purchase a boot loader unlock code, and unlock those as well. And of course, doing so voided your warranty.

Yeah i've made a bit of confusion there, sorry.

XT1053 or XT1060 developer edition

Hi, i'm planning to buy a Moto X 1st gen (2013), but i'm confused about the different models and which will be better or has best LTE band support.
I see some XT1053 advertise as Developer Editions GSM unlocked and also some XT1060 advertise too as Developer Edition unlocked, but sometimes I also see that are advertise as AT&T and/or Verizon versions.
As I'm planning to buy this phone in the US but not using there, are both of them gsm and bootloader unlocked? Which one of them is better? I need at least band 4 support (1700/2100); band 28 would be great, but i think none of these moto x support it.
Thanks in advance, hope my question is clear!

If I recall the XT1060 is made for VZW (CDMA with GSM LTE) while the XT1053 is made for networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile (GSM with GSM LTE).

Thanks for your response!
So despite being called gsm unlocked, the xt1060 will not work with any gsm carrier in the world? Or the xt1060 is in fact more complete and will work with all gsm's (like xt1053) plus some cdma carriers?
Thanks in advance!
I didn't realize you made a thread for this...
I'm going to post the replies I sent you via PM in case others are looking for this info too...
In the USA, the XT1053 was Sold as the GSM Developer Edition. In that configuration, you could only get it as 32gig, black face, woven white back and silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and says Developer Edition on the back. Unlocking its bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
The XT1053 was also sold in the USA on the Moto Maker site as "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile sim)" and later "GSM Unlocked (ships with NET10 sim)". These two XT1053's were available with all Moto Maker options (for front, back, and accent colors, and different memory sizes). While you could bootloader unlock via the Moto web site, since they were NOT labeled "Developer Edition, it voided the warranty.
All of the XT1053 variants were SIM Unlocked (aka Carrier Unlocked), and support the exact same frequencies.
When it comes to the XT1060 there were made for Verizon USA.
There was the Developer Edition for Verizon (XT1060). As a Developer Edition, it too was only available as 32gig, black face, woven white back and silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and says Developer Edition on the back. Unlocking its bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
The Retail and Moto Maker variants of the XT1060 for Verizon USA were available with all Moto Maker options (for front, back, and accent colors, and different memory sizes). They are NOT bootloader unlockable (moto never gave out the codes for these).
Again, All the XT1060 variants (Dev Edition or MotoMaker or Retail) were SIM unlocked, and supported the same frequencies.
Since Verizon uses CDMA/EVDO for its voice and 2G/3G data services, the XT1060 does include CDMA support, however its geared towards Verizon USA's network. You can't use the XT1060 on Sprint's CDMA network for example.
When it initially shipped, the only LTE Band the Verizon XT1060 variants supported was Band 13. Band 4 support was added to the XT1060 in the Android 4.4 update. This lead to the confusion as some web sites never got updated to reflect Band 4 being added.
As for what frequencies do the XT1053 and XT1060 support, see -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X_(1st_generation)#Variants as it is now correct.
You will see that when it comes to GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands, the XT1053 and XT1060 support the "standard 4" (850/900/1900/2100) so if your carrier uses those for 2G, 3G or non-LTE 4G, you'll be fine with either. The XT1053 also supports GSM/UMTS/HSPA on AWS (1700/2100Mhz) which is used by T-Mobile USA.
When it comes to LTE, the XT1060 supports Band 4 and 13 (with 4.4 and up). The XT1053 supports Band 2, 4 and 17.
If your carrier isn't compatible with Verizon's CDMA, and/or uses GSM/UMTS/HSPA, I would recommend you get the XT1053 for the following reasons...
The XT1053 is intended to be used with GSM out of the box, and has an easier time being used on "any carrier". To use the XT1060 on a GSM carrier, you need to force its radio to GSM and the Verizon firmware will always tell you its a "non-verizon sim" inserted in the phone.
The XT1053 will get its Over The Updates (like Lollipop) no matter what carrier its on where as the XT1060 will likely need to be manually upgraded if you are not using it on Verizon's network.
Any variant of the XT1053 can have its bootloader easily unlocked (by requesting the code from Moto's web site). To unlock the bootloader on the XT1060, you must ensure you get an authentic "Developer Edition For Verizon (XT1060)"
both support LTE Band 4, neither support LTE band 28
The XT1060's are the same. Dev Edition vs Retail/Moto Maker is really only about 1. Does moto give out the bootloader unlock code (Dev=Yes, All others=No), and can you customize it when you purchase it (MotoMaker=Yes, others = No). All XT1060's use the exact same Roms.
The XT1053's are the same. Dev Edition vs Moto Maker is really only about 1. Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty (Dev=No, All others=Yes), and can you customize it when you purchase it (MotoMaker=Yes, Dev Edition = No). All XT1053's use the exact same Roms.
Yeah, even if the price is higher, the XT1053 is likely going to perform better for you. See if you can get a non-Dev Edition XT1053 cheaper, because that will work exactly the the same as the Dev Edition XT1053. Unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty on the non-dev edition, but since you'll be out of the USA with it, the warranty probably wont matter.
I know this thread is a bit old, but I have an xt1053 (t-mobile version). Will this work on Verizon for calls and data?

Read more closely, your answer is above. Verizon uses CDMA, the 1053 does not have CDMA bands.
~Pleeeeze~ Need Reliable XT1060DEV Power/Volume Ribbon Cable
I had a stroke on the 30th and for some reason thought it was a good idea to disassemble my Moto X, 32Gb XT1060DEV. Long story short, I need the volume/power ribbon cable and can't find an appropriate replacement unit anywhere. Any and/or all help is greatly appreciated. I am at total loss as to where I can order a quality ribbon cable.

I replaced the fried rear camera in my XT1053 with a part from an eBay seller called bonfireradios. The camera was used but it works great and takes excellent pictures. I checked and they currently have a power / volume flex cable for $6 total. It's the same part for all versions of the 1st gen Moto X. Hope this helps.
On a side note, If you cracked the edges of your battery cover like I did while taking the phone apart, I know of a another eBay seller that sells brand new OEM white "crosshatch" battery covers that match the Dev Edition perfectly, with the exception of the "Developer Edition" engraving.
