Phone just died? - T-Mobile LG G4

Okay, so this seems to be a recurring thing here. I've seen a few threads about this now. I don't understand what's going on and why there are no answers. I was literally sitting here texting my girlfriend and my phone froze then rebooted. Booted back up fine, and then 5 minutes later did the same damn thing again. This time though it just keeps boot looping. It'll get to the point where it's optimizing all my apps and get part way through, freeze, and do it all over again. I'm stock unrooted, and I'm quite pissed off at this. This should not be happening to these phones, and my phone has been perfectly fine with no problems for a while now and all the sudden it just wants to do this. Also, if I pull the battery and put it back in it won't turn back on or charge for 10 minutes, and then just keeps looping.

It's not looking good for us bro... Sorry.. Seems as if the MotherBoards are no good. I've tried a few different data recovery options nothing seems promising. Taking my phone to T-Mo today..

I ended up taking mine in yesterday, getting a warranty replacement. I'm just hoping since their already used devices that there are no problems with it. The rep told me if I get 3 bad phones though they allow me to switch to a different phone.

You were just lied to. There is no set rule to say that if you get three bad phones, that you'd get to choose a different phone.

Oh well, my new phone hasn't had any problems so far. Actually it's quite better than my old one. I'm getting 4G and LTE in places my old phone only came up with 2G.

It actually did use to be that way. It was that you had to have had the phone replaced 3 times (basically 4 same bad phone) then they offered you a different phone that was comparable to what you had.

Mine did the same thing too since two days ago. At least you got a replacement, mine wasn't warrranty covered because it had a little crack on the screen. Thinking of jumping ship to another phone now :/

Sorry to hear that, the only thing out of shape with my old phone was the leather back. The new one they sent me has been amazing though. If anything I'd jump to the v10. It sucks though because all the new flagship are right around the corner.

Will at&t know?

If I flash back to stock rom, will they be able to tell that I have flashed other roms?
I'm considering trying to get a replacement due to random shut downs. My work has me on call and sometimes I pick up my phone and I don't know how long it's been off. My employees often text me important stuff from the job. So this is important to me.
So will they be able to tell?
Nope, make sure to master clear and then get the JH7 update to be sure.

Agreed.
Though I suggest you hold out for another week or two and have them replace it for the Inspire. I'm going to do that soon, and speak to their 'Android specialists' about it.
Two things I don't like about that phone are the size (it's huge) and the lcd screen. I don't think I could go to an lcd after using samoled.
Plus, how would that work. I have a 2 year commitment with this phone, how could I trade for that one. I'm well past my trial period.
did you buy phone insurance? u coulda always just drop the phone and bust the screen.
if not, flash back to stock and the n00bs in the store wont know the difference. however, if you are well past your trial period, att is gonna send you to samsung more than likely. at least that is what they tried to do with me. my first captivate shut down every time i got a text message.
If you're insisting on switching phones, contact warranty and they'll send you another one. After they've sent you two Captivates, you are within your rights to ask for a different make and model. If they don't comply just ask for the Resolutions team, and they'll help you out.
thank you all

Random Reboots.

I have been through 2 phones already, this one here is the worst yet. Within the 1st hour of use it had rebooted 3 times. Now it seems to happen at random.. the phone can be sitting idle on the table and it will randomly reboot.
Anyone else having issues this bad?

Mine's done it about 3 or 4 times in the month I've owned it... perfectly acceptable and better than my previous Android device... or my iPhone before that as a matter of fact.
I have to wonder if it is due to some piece of software you have installed.
The new phone was received today. I had only added my gmail account to it and not restored anything on it yet. it was bone stock with the exception of the account. and it rebooted now 5 times in the last 1.5 hours. The last 2 times were done AFTER a factory reset
Mine reboots maybe once or twice a week, which while annoying, I can live with.

That bad no, but mine had the occasional reboot as well and that was completely stock. It did it after resetting the vivid. The next logical thing was to back off the stock bloatware / spyware one at a time and of course the stock app uninstall is very limited, but I did what I could and it still did it. I blamed Carrier IQ, which may, or may not be true, but I blame it anyway. <G>

What I have come down to is returning it to amazon. After speaking to a very polite and helpful rep he had state they have been getting lots of returns for locked bootloaders as the main reason but also random reboots. So he gave me the skyrocket for free i just have to make sure that upon delivery I hand the vivid to UPS. I really Hate to leave HTC but this is something I cannot deal with as I need a phone that works since it is tied to my business.
I've had mine for a couple weeks now and it has done it once. Freaked me out though. It was just sitting on the car seat when I happened to look over, it shut off briefly and went to the splash. I thought about returning it at that momnet... and still am. If It wasn't so new, I probably wouldn't care.
Mine did this while charging and went away with new battery. I called HTC and they sent one out.
Bad batch of phones?
There is another, older thread on this same issue. I have experienced reboots three times in this first month, but not in the past week or so. Based on your experience, and some other issues in other threads, I think there must have been a bad batch of phones. It's too bad a replacement did not make things better.
I used to have random reebots, but for the past couple weeks it hasn't happened. Not worried about it anymore.
I don't really get random reboots anymore but it freezes sometimes while trying to lock/unlock the phone. Just emailed HTC to see if my device is faulty or if its a known issue.

[Q] Random Reboots

I received my Vz Dev Edition phone on Mon. Still running bone-stock with the 4.4 update. The first night, while I was talking on the phone, the phone rebooted twice. Once more in the evening, it rebooted while in its holster.
Since then, it's rebooted once or twice a day, always when I haven't been using it (I've felt it buzz, and taken it out of the holster and seen it booting).
Anyone else experience anything like this? I'm holding off on unlocking, since I'd prefer no argument if I need to send it back.
-Jim
Not normal at all. You can try a reset to default(wiping the phone) and/or reflashing it completely with rsdlite. If that doesn't fix it then I'd most certainly have it replaced. I've never had a random reboot on either of my Moto X's.
That was my suspicion. I've had occasional reboots with prior phones, but never with a stock image. The fact that no one's posted here about reboots made me pretty suspicious.

lol. I almost knew for a fact that Verizon did that when I was with them. Their "like new" was basically just someone else's defective phone.
I've come to two realizations.
1) my phone has always been in my holster when it rebooted (when it happened while I was talking, I was using Bluetooth).
2) you can reboot this phone by long-pressing the power button, even when locked.
You can guess where I'm headed with this. So for the next few days, I'm putting my phone in the holster with the buttons up instead of down. Then I'll see if I need to post an embarrassed-smiley follow-up.

My phone did it sitting on a table without it even being setup.

Retitled. How to hose your phone in 35 easy steps. :)

To be fair to HTC/Sprint I retitled this. As the phone is not representative of a normal M8 (either by hardware or corrupted/miss programming).
Long story.
If you want the short version, "This phone sucks" (and by the way so does the S5).
Here is the long version.
Bought the phone first day.
HTC Unlocked and Rooted it as soon at it was available. Applied S-OFF as soon as it was available.
I had not much time to play with it and stayed on Stock and have WIFI on full time which is used at work and home.
Couple days ago I decided to try some ROMs (being very patient for things to mature a bit). I tried Barebones, pretty good ROM. Note I had "dirty flashed it".
Then I took my first long trip since I got the phone. 100 miles into the boonies.
It popped up "Roaming Guard every 2 minutes", every call. But it was still running ok.
I had forgot to shut the roaming guard off (or it was locked out by the time I though of it).
This is a known issue and happened on M7as well. Most reliable way to deal with it, is to full wipe in order to disable it. (I tried all the tricks).
Well at this time OMJ released his "Harman" ROM and Firmware.
Well I guess it's a good time to start clean, wipe and switch to OMJ's Harmon ROM (and firmware) (whom I've been a loyal customer of)
So this stupid Roaming Guard thing keeps coming and going as I sort out which ROM I want, restoring things with TB etc.
But now, my phone is "stuck is 1X". WTF. And if it does occasionally show 3G as soon as I use it, it drops out completely or reverts to 1X.
So now I think I hosed something really bad. Can't get 3G at home or work. My wifes HTC One M7 is fine (running OMJ's BadBoys ROM)
Updated Profiles, played with PRL's.
So I put it all back to factory (except S-ON) and used the HBOOT that hides that's it's S-OFF.
And flashed the closest Stock ROM I could find (which so happened to get no Data or Voice at all). Perfect !!
Then took it to sprint store, and it was a sharp kid and he said it was rooted and nicely handed it back. He suggested I add T.E.P. and "try again".
Well I figured I'll have to S-ON it. And stopped in another store to added T.E.P. just in case. I had like 2 days left.
So I was gonna go home S-ON it and go to another Sprint "repair" Store but decided I really needed to get to some other commitments.
So I restored a backup and on the road and the phone was back to "Normal" except for the stupid Roaming Guard thing. WTF.
Then it hit me. The new ROM from OMJ was telling me what my REAL network was doing and the stock ROM was lying through it's teeth.
I'm well aware of Developer ROM's displaying "1x" when it sees 1x but after being on the stock ROM (with WIFI on), I kind of forgot about it.
And I was never clear what the "New" Spark Icons were really saying anyway (with WIFI ON or OFF).
So the truth is this thing has been running like crap since day 1. And I believe even worse since the first OTA firmware update.
I started researching options to get the Galaxy S5. Turns out the reviews are worse on the S5 than the M8.
Then I kept finding threads like this one.
https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/155517
Maybe I have a bad phone. Maybe I'll just smash the thing and try another one.
I miss my M7. Luckily my wife has it.
I had to get my first M8 replaced because it was roaming all the time. My second one is much better . Sounds like you have a bad one like my first one. I returned mine within the first 14 days to get a no-questions-asked replacement for full refund.
Uhh.. No problems here. Sounds like a defective device to me. They won't swap it where you rooted it, TEP will cost you a deductible and they'll send you a refurbished model. Shouldn't of rooted so quickly.

I don't understand if u don't want the roaming guard to sound just uncheck it on the settings. If you have trouble with your settings dial *#*#4636#*#* and select phone information scroll down and select the option cdma+evdo/lte then reboot and check if that help. Not so easy to shut Roaming Guard off. I'll bet if most people look right now, You'd find it greyed out.
I just completely wiped my phone again. Ran RUU on it. Immediately Disabled the Guard. And a half hour later it's all locked out again (but it's locked out disabled).
I don't know what causes it to lock.
But you do have to do it immediately after a wipe.
I'll check out the Options #*# option you suggested. Thanks. I remember that being mentioned before.

I tend to root as soon as it's available. In case an OTA comes out and lose the ability to ever do it. I also like to see if I can root it with in the 14 days, because if something does go wrong I can swap it. I can make it factory looking again. I just didn't want to bother in case they could fix it, because it felt like just a programming issue. I knew I was taking a chance when I brought it in like that. I've brought in MUCH more hacked phones and walked out with a brand new one, with no T.E.P.
I'm still not sure if this is a "Broken" phone. It definitely won't pull in weak 3G like my M7 did.

Fwiw, I've never seen my roaming guard settings greyed out.
As a sprint tech I can tell you 100% of the M8's that have come in to my store that I've replaced have been better the second time around. Seems like there were some lemons in the first batch. You'd better take it in to get exchanged or break it to get a replacement soon(lol) because as of today we were ordering new replacements, soon it'll be refurbs once there is stock in the warehouse.
I also noticed the serial number on my original M8 started with FA, while my current one starts with HT. Could be that ones from a specific location were bad.
There is problem in this phone. I don't think why you face this type of problem?

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I won't have to "break it". I never have, but I would if it came down to it.
I was thinking that they are not refurbished yet as well.
I'm not convinced 100% it's broken yet.
I did notice in a breakdown of the phone, that they do have little spring loaded contacts to the Antenna's, which have been a problem on past phones. And that might be all it is.
I have $18.00 glass screen installed on it as well. And it's installed PERFECTLY. Chances of that happening again are slim
I really would like to get this phone to work.
That thread I posted, folks got second phones and still had issues.
I think it has to do with this whole Spark thing.
You know I wouldn't be rooting and wanting the option of Roam only etc. if the Sprint Network wasn't so bad in the first place.
The only thing that keeps me is the SERO plan. But that is wearing thin. Everyone of my co-workers gets 10-40x faster data rates than I do.

Sprint better get their act together.
Oh and the store I did go to. They just fired all their Techs 3 weeks ago. It used to be a good store to go to.

My M8's serial number starts with FA and so far, the only real issues I've had are sending/receiving texts at home. Sometimes, they come in delayed but I attribute that to the network moreso than the phone. Though, updating the profile/prl seems to fix it. Forcing the phone to re-provision while on CDMA rather than LTE seems to also keep it from happening sooner.

I'm curious now if my phone is bad or its network related. I seem to drop/miss calls quite often. I just checked my serial number and it starts with FA as well.
I'm wondering if these phones were all built in different locations. I have a gold one from best buy and this thing works like a champ. I get similar cell signal compared to my s3. Even at my in laws house which just got lte a few months back and my brother in laws house where I get no signal on my s3, it acted the same with no signal. He lives in a secluded area. I'm reading a lot of negative things about phones bought thru Sprint being problematic. Haven't read anything about the gold best buy phones acting up. What do you all think could these phones be built in totally different locations?
Sent from my 831C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Maybe not different locations, but definitely different batches. Some could have subpar antennas.
I believe the serial number indicates the distribution center from which the device was produced. I saw mention of it in the Firewater thread when people were trying to figure out why it worked on some devices and not on others.
Serial number for my phone started with FA. Ordered it after watching the unveiling, got it two days later.
Haven't had a single problem with the phone as far as software, and no hardware issues like defects.
Guess I'm just lucky.
Knock in wood taking the firmware update on H/K ROM doesn't change things down the line.

Reboot and shutdown wont come back without removing battery

I have been rooted and using custom ROMs for over a year now on my note 4 but recently started having my TekXodus ROM crash occasionally. So I updated to the factory latest DOK2 using Kies and I have an issue where when I reboot or shutdown. When i do this I have to pull the battery out for a few minutes before it can boot again. I have tried factory restoring with Kies several times and still have the same problem. Root + custom ROMs also have the issue. Any ideas?
Similar problems in another thread. I'm still having issues although I've gone back to stock as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/help/note-4-major-slowdown-bugs-boot-loops-t3311297
People are starting to pop up everywhere with this issue, ROM's, stock, rooted, it doesn't seem to matter. It seems like it's either a software update they pushed to all carriers or maybe hardware failure of some kind. The batteries do seem to go bad fairly regularly around 9-12 months. That's fixable with that Anker 2x + wall charger kit, but if it's hardware failure for this it could get ugly.
Yeah mines getting worse. Gonna try to pick up a motherboard.

My phone died completely after a week of ongoing problems. Won't boot or anything any longer and I don't think its software related.. Let me know if you have any success picking up and installing a motherboard.
My Note 4 I bought a year ago was having this issue a couple months ago. Did the usual, factory reset, blah blah blah, was getting the mmc read fail error. Called tech support told them everything I did because I knew they would want me to do it so I headed them off at the pass. They said well it seems you did all the work for us and I had a replacement the next day for $5. Worked fine for 2 months and now it's doing it again so I'll be calling for another replacement tomorrow.
Strange thing is I wasn't getting the same mmc read fail error although I saw something similar only 1 time. This time though I did get a dm-verity verification (?) error. No idea what that even means.
What sucks is they really should offer me an upgrade at this rate but I have no interest in the Note 5 or the S6 without an sd slot or removable battery. Hoped to hold on to my N4 for at least another year.
where can we even buy motherboards for this note 4?

Yep, my time w/ the note4 was good while it lasted. I purchased it for $350 back in october and was great. sold it "as is for parts" on ebay for $160 yesterday, and am done with samsung for a while. took that $160 and purchased a LG G2 that i'll have to use for another year or more. i was really getting used to the note's size and stylus features as well.
